Hip Hop and/or rappers did not create or embed the word, epithet or diatribe into the American heart and psyche. The word ***** as used by NWA (who I would give credit for propagating its use in Hip Hop on a mainstream level), was used to express the prevailing attitude of black people in this country for centuries before NWA or even Hip Hop were conceived. That attitude being that regardless of what a black man in America does, achieve, accomplish or fails to do, he is, in the eyes of the white-power-structure, still a *****! I don’t really like it but hey, ***** Gregory has an autobiography out called *****. Although it was released in 1964, I think.

Here’s an excerpt from the book:

@Blue Eyed Devil. It is VERy fittinf that you bring up that book. It indeed fight in VERY well with this discussion. The first time I got called a ***** I was 16 years of age & had just moved to the South from Parts elsewhere. My Father had of course explained to me what the word meant but to be honest because I had never heard it before (at least aimed directly at me) it had NO effect on me whatsoever. In fact the person that used that word was most offended because I DIDN’T respond to his ***** poor attempt at a racial slur. There’s 2 schools of thought here (ok maybe more than 2) & I am anxious to see WHICH school NAS has enrolled in.

I’m right there with you. I read the book during a History of Black Cinema course I was taking and it was pretty eye-opening. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about race and history in America, but the way he broke it down was pretty crazy.

For all that are judging this piece without a clear understanding of how Nas is trying to present it to you, I just challenge you to be a little more open minded and see what drove him to call the album *****. And to those of us who are in support of hearing the message and the content of this album we need to ask ourselves “If a white person brought this same album out, would I be this open-minded?” For most of us the answer would be a definative and collective HELL NO! Very thought provoking and controversial! Good debate material.

I love Nas. I’m not happy about this title. he could have called it anything else and the material would still speak for itself and heads who like him would still purchase it. But noooooooooo, as if we haven’t had enough of the N word…lord have mercy..

I have always been a NAS fan, BUT THAT IS JUST PLAIN IRRESPONSIBLE AS A BLACK PERSON (FORGET ARTISTIC LICENSE). Were does he get off. BUT I WAS BORN IN 1974 and growing up I only heard BLACK people using the word. And *****ody seemed to be offended then.

Nas has always been one of the more positive rappers. I’ll wait to hear the album before I p***** judgement.

People are crying ‘he’s opening a door that will never be shut’ and ‘this is gonna cause a lot of people pain’. Bull*****! None of the other books that have had similar titles (mentioned throughout this blog) have caused pain. Get over yourselves people.

i think this album cover is quite good. its part of nas’s message, hes putting a word which has negative *****ociations with a picture of a what looks like a well educated person with a positive image. he is trying to bring to our attention how much upset this word can still bring aboout.

Here’s what I wanna know:

Will he freely USE the word “*****” on this album when NOT making an intellectual point(“so that ***** said” or “my ***** Fooquan”)? If so, that would completely negate his supposed purpose.

Nas only cares about sales… thats it… @Tiffany, Even Talib doesn’t have enough credit to do something like this. He has not devoted his career to politcal hip-hop, niether has ***** NAS. Public Enemy— YES, KRS-1—YES, They are the only two that I can’t think off the top of my head right now that have the respect anf the clot to deal with this “*****” Title… As far as it being ignorant I have to disagree… this is the same guy “***** NAS” who did “OOCHIE WALLA” Yes, the is “ONE MIC” AND “IF I WORLD THE WORLD” (IS BIGGEST HIT SO FAR IN HIS CAREER). So, I just think that ***** Nas is in it for the money now, and there is nothing wrong with that… BUT SAY IT, DON’T NAME YOUR ALBUM THIS AND TELL US THAT IT WILL BE AN COMPLETE POLITCAL ALBUM WHEN WE ALL KNOW IT WON’T BE.
