oprah & the students

Oprah admits that despite the monumental scandals that have rocked her South African girls school, she is proud it’s still standing:

In a newspaper interview published Saturday, Oprah Winfrey acknowledged making several mistakes at her girls school in South Africa, but said she remains proud of its success. As previously reported, four students were expelled and three others were suspended in a second sexual misconduct scandal to hit the Leadership Academy for Girls. There were stories in local papers lat week that the girls were kept in isolation during their disciplinary hearing. Winfrey says the reports are misleading.

“I have made several mistakes and one of them was being overprotective of the girls, which has led to an impression that the school is isolating them from society,” Winfrey was quoted as saying in the Weekend Argus. Without giving details of the most recent infraction, she told the newspaper that it was “insulting” that the family of one of the expelled girls had complained to the press even though she had been warned before about her behavior.

“Those girls in their own testimony during the (disciplinary) hearing said they knew they were breaking the rules and that they deliberately broke the rules,” the talk show host was quoted as saying. Winfrey’s $40 million, 28-building campus is the fulfillment of a promise she made to former South African President Nelson Mandela and aims to give poor girls a quality education and prepare them for leadership positions in a country where state schools are struggling to overcome the legacy of white-minority rule.

“The majority of girls are thriving, really fulfilling the dream and vision I had,” Winfrey told the newspaper. “They really have exceeded any expectations I had for them. In spite of everything that’s happened, what keeps me inspired and hopeful is the heart of every girl, because they are wonderful, they are magnificent.”

Hat’s off to ‘O’ for maintaining the vision and keeping hope alive, but we all know it’s only a matter of time before them heffahs stir up more ass clownery for the talk show queen to sweep under the rug. SMH.

    @Chris Brown

    Why is this all you’re doing with your computer? Have you nothing else to do in life?

  • Angee

    Sorry Re and Pimpin, I couldn’t help it. :-)

    I actually support Oprah in this mission. She could have put a school in Mississippi, but for her own reasons, she decided to go with South Africa.

    Girls over the globe need excellent schools. In Africa in particular, the number of females in the education system drops off sharply after the elementary school level (and no I am not from Africa). Just in case someone thinks I am biased.

    @Angee

    Lol, but hey, it’s true.

    So many things that she could do I am glad and proud of her for wanting to help and actually doing something about it. On the other hand we must understand that instead of or along with running overseas to adopt children or start schools we must be sure to take care of home as well. I appauld her efforts and I am proud of her for keeping her head up in all of this, but let us not forget about the struggles and disparities at home.

    When you do big things problems are inevitable. There is no getting around it. Oprah is savvy enough to learn and get past it.

    Gd Morning BE! :)

  • mzmichelle

    She know damm well Detroit needs that school too! But I agree Oprah be on some other shit.

  • YSR

    Oprah is all PR, she don’t care like most think she does. The big O is not what she seems

  • Ara

    How did Oprah f*ck up? She gave these girls a golden opportunity for a quality education and a chance to make something out of their lives and maybe help their country which is under such dire circumstances, and some of THEM f*cked up. There are some who do not appreciate or recognize a good thing even if it bites them in the a**.

  • Ara

    Oprah has donated millions of dollars to many American educational institutions, if she is mixed up, then a whole lot of us need to be mixed up like her and whether she is wasting her time or not, it’s her time and her money.

  • Black Pearl

    I agree with the statement that the Big O is not what she seems. Sure there is a huge need in Africa for education. But, she put down Black kids here in America. That wasn’t right. Sure we have some of our kids that don’t want to do anything with their lives including getting an education. But, we have so many that do. How you going to put down kids in your own country to help kids in another country? Most Africans don’t even identify with African Americans. They identify more with whites than they do us. That’s why things are happening the way they are with that school, because she didn’t do it right.

    Oprah can hand pick kids here in this country, they way she did with the kids in Africa. Believe me there are plenty of kids here that do want an education, but can’t afford it. Detroit school system is really suffering. They don’t even have toilet paper in the schools. She can build a school here. God don’t like ugly. This is only the beginning of the problems with her school in Africa. It’s not what she did; it’s how she did it. She put down kids in her own country to raise up kids in another country, most of whom probably don’t even appreciate the gift that she has given them.

  • Ara

    Someone mentioned New Orleans, Oprah built a whole community of houses fully furnished with furniture and housewhole items after the hurricane Katrina catastrophe. Dang, Oprah can’t save the world by herself.

  • why knot

    Oprah is very rich screwed up money wasting backwards person. Don’t listen to her, she’ll lead you into hell if you’re not careful. It don’t matter how much money or time she spend, she is W*R*O*N*G

  • lady_jay

    Oprah shouldn’t have to fess up to anything. All she is trying to do is help these girls get an education. Of course she can’t stay at the school 24/7 to monitor what goes on, but what those girls are doing to each other have nothing to do with Oprah herself and she shouldn’t have to say sorry for anything. True enough it is a bad situation, but it is not her fault.
