Chelle: The reason this was NOT our (by "our" I mean "Black Folks") Shallow Hal was because there was no point to Norbit. Eddie Murphy portrayed the big girl as horrible as possible. She was ugly, mean, a cheater, ignorant, evil, and she was also dark skinned. While Kate was beautiful, kind, faithful, intelligent and compassionate...and she happened to be light skinned. I think Eddie was making a point. This is a reflection of how he sees black women. I also watched Shallow Hal...and in my opinion that was a good flick because there was a message...a lesson about beauty being only skin deep. The character Rosemary in Shallow Hal was beautiful primarily because of her spirit, her intelligence, her love for her people, and children...and in the end, irrespective of her weight, Hal realized she was beautiful on the outside too. Name one good message from Norbit? Blacks were portrayed as pimps, hustlers, crooks, con men, etc. Rasputia was portrayed in the worst possible light...and unfortunately because of the Kate character (Thandie Newton), there's a clear parallel drawn between light-skinned black women and dark skinned black women. Unfortunately, it's the same stereotype that has been perpetuated since slavery times. And it doesn't help that Eddie dates primarily light skinned black women (Nicole Murphy, Scary Spice, Tracey Edmonds, etc.). In my opinion Eddie has a clear disdain for darker skinned, overweight black women. It's unfortunate but true. I hope Eddie uses his talent and fame to send more positve messages to young people...black and white. The fact is that the media is responsible for a great deal of the negative stereotypes about blacks and young white children can grow up with the wrong ideas about blacks which can shape their perceptions of Blacks throughout their lives. And even more importantly the media helps shape young black children's perceptions about themselves. Which is why we need to be more responsible with the messages we are sending to our youth. Norbit was a BIG NO-NO.

he deserved the oscar for dreamgirls, and even nutty professor like some others have said, but for NORBIT hell no! it wasn't even a good movie, and the female character he played was so damn evil that it wasn't funny. just because he looked the part doesn't mean that it was a great performance. and i'm usually a fan of his work (i was pissed when he didn't win last year!!)

On the real, some times we need to realax. The movie is stereotypical, but what movie isn't... When was the last time Jackie Chan did a movie without karate? When was the last time a Pamala Anderson type was used as the smart ugly girl? It was a comedy & the shyt was hilarity! Is it stereotypical for her to be having a fling with Busta Move Jenkins (Power Tap)? No most folks think big blocks get no love... & Rasputia was beating Norbit's ass... Have a beer, watch the movie, and have a laugh or two... This is our Shallow Hal (fat girl movie for white folks). "Ma'am do you have on bottoms" OMGosh, ROTMFF Bree... That was my favorite part. If I rocked a kini, I would have to lift my belly to see the bottoms too... He need to win for that scene alone... It was so realistic.
