Jay Z

Jay Z was a featured guest blogger on rapradar this week and discussed his weird yet refreshing musical line up at his latest concert:

A word from Hov

Last night I performed at the University of Arizona, I had a ball!! Through all the excitement and joking around (as well as the technical difficulties) I missed out on the opportunity to say something important..

On the show as well were Third Eye Blind and Kelly Clarkson.. I thought that to be the oddest pairing EVER but, soon realized, it’s what I’ve always professed..There is NO such thing as BLACK music or WHITE music only GOOD or BAD music..It’s stupid cool to like things that are not like you, and that goes for outside of music.. If you’re an African American you can have a jewish friend. Wait, does Lyor having some Israeli mixed with his jewish count? (Sure they are paranoid but, so are black people after they’ve smoked weed, haaaaa, and plus the JEW fro and the BLUEprint fro are the SAME thing.)

I think concerts like this should happen more often. ( Outside of the one or 2 festivals a year or “Zootopia”) I’m putting that into the universe..next up Taylor Swift and Uncle Murda!!

Sorry I don’t “Tweet” (do I?) so this will have to do..

Love.

Yeah that line up is weird as hell. Would you all be open to going to see a concert with Carrie Underwood and Plies? Sh*t naw, you wouldn’t.

He actually looks nice on this pic

  • JB has a reality show coming out – Cougar Unleashed, You better watch your young!!

    I like Jay.

  • JB has a reality show coming out – Cougar Unleashed, You better watch your young!!

    I like Third Eye Blind.

    But I would go see

Jay Z and No Doubt in concert together

  • Phoenix7

GOOD music by true artists is UNIVERSAL, no color ever in that..transcends race age nationality culture etc etc etc

  • http://joiia.blogspot.com Juicy J

Can’t stand Plies but I’m a black chick who has Carrie Underwood’s album. That chick can SANG! I didn’t know 3rd Eye Blind had something new. Haven’t listened to them since high school…hmmm, thanks for the tip

  • Lady Architect (Old Pimps I tell Ya…TGIF!)

Hey momma JB…any word on the test?

  • Back on My Swag

It’s not white or black music, but it’s genre’s. I don’t like country so I won’t go to country music concerts. But I love some Robin Thicke and Christina Aguillera.

So to answer your question, NO, I won’t be seeing Plies OR Carrie. Maybe Maxwell and Carrie opening up for him is about all I could imagine. Or maybe Taylor Swift opening up for NAS.

  • http://bossip tiababy09

    STILL CAN’T STAND HIM.

  • SexxyILove

OFF Subject: The Game comes on tonight at 8:30!!!

What Hov said made sense. I listen to a variety of music. Look at that song with Nelly ft Tim McGraw Over and Over again. That was an odd mix but the song was a banger. Sometimes it pays to mix it that way you dont get stuck with garbage like: Stanky Leg, Chicken Noodle Soup, etc.

  • Sookie

I love me some Jay, and this is why!!!!
    I like his attitude… he’s right.
He’s a firm believer that music is a uniting force, and i believe it too…

And yea, I’d go to a concert like that… why not? I never thought i’da listen’d to Linkn Park until Jay did an album with them….

    Good Morning Lady A

No not yet. I think Tuesday. But we got the questions on the final. There are 8 questions and he gave us 7 but then he said he was going to change 1. But I am going to finish all the homework this weekend and. But tonite I am going to finish up the Computer and on tomorrow I will finish up the history, so I can work on the homework Sat night, Sunday and Monday.

  • http://www.k.com noelle

Jay you forgot to capitalize Jewish right here: If you’re an African American you can have a jewish friend. Wait, does Lyor having some Israeli mixed with his jewish count?

  • Sawyer

“Taylor Swift and Uncle Murda!!” LMFAO!!!

Taylor Swift would stay far far away from Murda…lol! Jay Z is a fool (lol), but his progression is fully complete! Only a person with an open mind to all cultures of things can understand what he means. There is nothing wrong with the line up at his concert. People are capable of liking rap, rock and jazz music. You just have to see that the world doesnt exist from one street corner to the next!

  • http://www.myspace.com/gazfynest *Living lovely* BULLs IN 7

its funny how u guys vomit at plies..admit it the man makes good songs…

  • NIKKI UNDERWOOD

Loved Linkin Park and Jay’s Mash Up…

I politely rolled my window up…

  • Smoovee Sayz

I see Plies was mentioned here lol…um after seeing that “not very tall” stripper on the pole…something about Plies next goonette or whatever…lol I find it very hard to take him seriously now…I used to be all for him…right now not so much
    anyhoo
Jay is the man. Hands down. Luvs him.
    @ Me
I would like to see Cold Play/MJB/Eminem (from your list)

  • http://undressingher.com undressingHER

there is no such thing as good music or bad music either since everyone has different taste in music. thankfully.

  • always knew

I listen to ALL kinds of music.

    Jazz
    Classical
    Country
    Rock
    R n B
    Rap
    Gospel

    I HEART ALL MUSIC!

    @ me– you forgot R.E.M, Annie Lenox….. :(

  • JB has a reality show coming out – Cougar Unleashed, You better watch your young!!

Take away Eminem and Coldplay and I’d think about attending if it was an all day outdoor affair
I think the concert should be free
    ***************************************************
How could you forget No Doubt and Licoln Park?

  • Nigga Said

Barry Manilo, Jim Jones, Yanni and Rascal Flats. Now thats a concert for your ass.

  • SexxyILove

that lincoln park/ jay z album was hot. I used to bump it too and people would be like WTF? It pays to have be open minded

  • rubyredz

Yes I would. It would save me alot of money on running to see Beyonce at the Verizon Center and then Pink at the Patriot Center..SMH Because I just love music, good observation Jay

  • Whatever

I understand where he’s coming from. I like all kinds of *good sounding* music.

However, I disagree with his assertion that music has no racial boundaries. Each culture naturally gravitates towards those sounds & rhythms which appeal to them. For instance, for the most part, black people don’t listen to rock music. Most Americans don’t listen to Arabic music, and so on and so forth.

I agree that good music is good music. However, “good” is subjective.

  • me (the original)®

    @ Everyone

Feel free to add to the list, I know I forgot a lot of people/groups I’d like to see. Definitely REM. Annie Lennox, she’s alright. Broken Glass turned me off of her, for some reason.

Imagine if they did some sort of Woodstock thing?

    @Mock Rock Star

No Coldplay? Not even just for them to do “The Scientist” ? Everyone likes that song!!!!

    Nobody said it was easy……
It’s such a shame for us to paaarrrttt
    Nobody said it was easy……
No one ever said it would be this haaarrrdd
Oh take me back to the start…..

    <3333

  • Holla

Jay is smarter tnan the average bear (rapper). I love him. Damn Beyonce…

  • PURPPLE, just call me TADOW

umm, shut the hell up Gay Z daym. What the hech is so weird about third eye blind and kelly clarkson performing at the show with you? musical generes have been mixing since forever….and pop and hip hop arent that many degrees apart anyway…

  • Divine

    JayZ is old. LOL!

  • http://www.myspace.com/ocky_j Octavia

The one difference with “white music” is that their fans roll with them to the death! Third eye blind hasn’t had a hit since I was in high school, but they can still do shows. Black folks don’t hold on like that. If you disappear for a few months too long (e.g. Lauryn Hill and now Usher) we act like we don’t know you anymore.

  • facefacts

of course jay would say that cuz black or white your money is GREEN and that is most important!!!

  • http://signoftimes@msn.org mild sauce head of my own tradition ™

No coldplay for me or Em either… Jay z and Kanyeezy and Common and nas all the way!!!

  • http://signoftimes@msn.org mild sauce head of my own tradition ™

    i agree with jay z!!!

  • daillest

Jay is the shit. He should put that together and then he would become a damn gazillionare LMFAO

  • BEYONCENJAYZHATA

SO I GUESS THIS WILL STOP ALL THE RACISM IN THE WORLD, CAUSE LIKE THE COOCHIE POPPER SAID ON THE LARRY SHOW SOONER OR LATER WE WILL BE ALL MIXED UP SO THERE WON’T BE ANYMORE RACISM, YEAH BEY WAY TO GO YOU GAVE A GOOD ANSWER, AND THANKS JIGGA NOW THAT YOU HAVE ALL YOUR MILLS YOU ARE GOING TO BE THE ONE TO CHANGE THE WORLD,HOVA HOVA HOVA THEY LOVE YOU JIGGA!!!

  • chloe

Jewish is not a race, a jewish person can be black , white or asian. A black person and a jewish person being friends was not a good example.

  • And…..(with 5 dots)

    @ Back on My Swag
I agree with you. I think it’s more about genre than color. If a concert was free and there were a mix of country, rap, rock, etc… I would attend. But there’s no way in hell I would pay money to listen to certain genres I’m not interested in.

  • Smurfette

    SOooo acccurate …

  • Tessa

Ok, so i certainly didn’t expect him to type well for some reason. but I’m pleasantly surprised, and I agree with him.

  • Wanjiru

…phew! Almost had a heart attack thinking he was talking about Arizona State University…

…the sh*thole that is ASU totally disrespected President Obama!!!…and look at the OUTRAGE from the rest of the world…

…no one should EVER go there, not even just for a visit…

    .

  • HEY NOW!!!!

I like concert line ups like that! There’s nothing wrong with liking all types of music. Fall Out Boy and 50 just did a show and it ROCKED!! Like Jay i agree GOOD MUSIC IS GOOD MUSIC!

  • Loch Ness Monster

He lost me at the part about an African American friend being friends with a jewish person. The rest of what he said after that sounded retarded.

  • 2dimplzs

I would absolutely go see Third Eye Blind and Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood and Plies! I am a MUSIC LOVER. I was raised to love or at least appreciate all music. I’m raising my kids the same way. We play EVERYTHING in our house: Country, rock, alternative, reggae, R&B (old and new school), rap (old and new school), classical….I want to have well rounded, cultured kids.

I hope more concerts like this are on the horizon for those of us who whose taste in music goes beyond rap and R&B!!!

  • Back on My Swag

    @And(with 5 dots)

Yeah, a concert like what Me(the original) described including U2 and Anita Baker. Now that would be FIRE!!!

  • Back on My Swag

He lost me at the part about an African American friend being friends with a jewish person. The rest of what he said after that sounded retarded.

Agreed. Especially the Israeli mixed with jewish comment…i was blown too……..

  • chaka1

  • Tanya

I love when opposites or things that are different comes together. I think Plies sounds the same all the time and some other artistes are guilty of that like Flo Rida, 50 Cent, The Dream. Man change it up that is why I rate Kanye. He does diff. things and change it up.

I certainly would go to that concert. I’m versatile when it comes to music and i’m very comfortable in what I love!!

  • BE

I would go see Carrie Underwood and although i like R and B music I most I enjoy other types of music.

I agree with Jay…we have to evolve

  • Keek77

Plies and Carrie Underwood.. HELL YEAH! Those are two of my favorite artists.. my playlist on myspace is real crazy.. hip hop and country mix!

  • LovelyLisa

Problem is, his music isn’t good.

The “hustla’” movement that he ushered in killed whatever little integrity that hip-hop had left. It went from being an “artistic” (arguable) expression to a means to a financial end. PERIOD. In the process, our culture has been reduced to minstrelsy, All for the sake of the quick and easy , Almighty Amerikkan dollar. whatever it takes, right? Right. Good job, Jay-Z!

Now you are left with the likes of Gucci Man and Souja boy.

The word ART rarely, if ever, comes out of their mouths. If it does, it shouldn’t

  • oneluv

people need to open their minds to different kinds of music, its no different than “black” music if u dont like the beat most of the time your not goin to like the song, and sometimes u just have to listen to the words. And its no differen with other genres

  • Me

“its funny how u guys vomit at plies..admit it the man makes good songs…”

You know why they are good songs? They are all old school hits by original artists.

HAD A BLAST!!!!!!!! WAS JUST THE PERFECT LINE UP!

  • http://bossip You AInt Bad, You aint Nothin

oh and thank you for coming and performing for us Jay-Z that was way cool and nice of you!

  • Bloodshot 3rd Eye

No this is not revolutionary but considering how many black people won’t dare listen to anything that isn’t R&B or hip hop it’s not like it would be a completely irrelevant statement.

And man I still wonder how some of you even stomach being in a room with white walls as paranoid as you are.

  • JonnyisKing

I think we are all fully aware that music is one of the great equalizers, that being said there was a time in music, most notably the seventies when there were t.v shows and concerts that mixed up. Our country even with a Black president has started segregating itself, even beyond color lines. Our boxes or labels have come to define not just who but what and how we are. Damn, I just know there is a medium of being “Black and Proud” holding strong to your heritages music especially when Black culture in America created “American Music” and being musically eclectic. I hope Hov is not using this as some ploy that he is down with the “white folk” so lets be racially ambiguous( many emcees think now day’s because they know who Radiohead is and they listen to coldplay and maybe ad Justin timberlake to a joint that they are musically superior and not some lowly rapper who only has a *shudder* Black audience). If he is truly about bridging music that he go’s about it in thoughtfully and with good intentions and hopefully not at the expense of a culture(that by the way, is not relegated to only performing crap r&b and shit-hop), that would indeed be selling out!

  • JonnyisKing

it 2:00 am please excuse typos and grammer, right now I’m good to know wut a computer is!!!

  • smoovebuttah

He’s so HOLLYWOOD right now it’s ridiculous, it’s easy to say what’s not BLACK or WHITE when you have millions of dollars and the people who help you manage it are Jewish and are yes men. He probably asks them about what would look good, and they tell him (in a very nasal and corny voice) “Yes Hov a concert like that would be fantastic oh and you should give out a couple of Roca Wear T-shirts too!”

  • leave-it-be

================== THEY ONLY THING I WANA HEAR HIM SAY IS HIS WIFEY IS PREGNANT!!!!! :) AT LEAST WE WONT HAVE TO SEE HER OVER=EXPOSED BEHIND FOR SEVEN OR EIGHT MONTHS!!!!
