Selfies Cause Plane Crash

Investigators of a 2014 Colorado plane crash are now saying that selfies a pilot took mid-flight may be to blame for the fatalities.

The New York Daily News reports:

Mid-flight selfies may have caused a fatal plane crash in Colorado last year, officials said.

Pilot Amritpal Singh and his sole passenger died when their small plane crashed in May in a field in Watkins, a town about 20 miles east of Denver. The two took photos of themselves during the late-night flight, leading investigators to conclude that Singh was likely distracted while flying, the National Transportation Safety Board determined in a new report.

Investigators found a GoPro camera in the plane’s wreckage. On it was recorded video of the 29-year-old pilot and his unidentified passenger snapping selfies on their cell phones, CBS Denver reported.

The two had enabled the flash function on their phones, which likely distracted Singh, the report said.

“It is likely that cell phone use during the accident flight distracted the pilot and contributed to the development of spatial disorientation and subsequent loss of control,” the NTSB ruled.

The Cessna 150 took off from Watkins’ Front Range Airport in Colorado around 12:30 a.m. on May 31. The wrecked aircraft, which belonged to the pilot, was discovered the next morning, two miles from the airport.

So sad…
