goodhair

“OOOOH girl, you’ve got that good hair. You must have Indian in your family?” We’ve all heard this dumb ish before and what makes matters worse is many of us secretly believe that hair is considered ‘good’ or ‘bad’.

This issue has been floating around since the first black woman set foot in this country. We wish it would just go away but for some reason, its always brewing beneath the surface. Tyra Banks dedicated an entire show on the topic yesterday. Flip to the b-side for more

If you’ve been wondering what happened to the forums, we’re happy to say that they’re back in action. Check out this current debate over what qualifies as good hair. Be sure to drop some knowledge about this heated topic.

    Healthy hair is GOOD hair

  • BMW

I have kinky hair hair like the second pic, and I was always told it was bad hair because it wasn’t wavey and extra curly. Good hair is how you take care of it.

Good hair is healthy hair. Has nothing to do with texture/coil.

At least rock the joints that will make people think that’s YOUR hair…

Some of y’all be looking ridiculous with some of those joints that y’all be wearing… SMH

  • Nigga Said

I agree. good hair is healthy hair. Hair that does what you want it to do on command. There is a misconception that white, spanish, mix raced people have “good Hair” when some of them have the worst hair I’ve ever seen.

  • Capo ( But to the goones in the heights its all tato)

All hair is good hair as long as it don’t stink

  • zappy

That’s easy, good hair is anything you spend good money on, whether it is good shampoo and conditioner or a good weave.

On a serious note, three weeks ago, I said to my daughter (who is almost 10 years old) if she wanted to have her hair done like the other girls at church (texturized, relaxed, etc.). You know what she said to me, ” No mom, I wanted to look like the same old Gabby.”

Two snaps. Put me in my place.

  • Simply Juicy

Good Hair is healthy hair!!..but now everyone buys good hair!!!

  • Jaye ;-)

Any hair can be good hair if you take care of it. Problem is… most Black women don’t know how to take care of their natural hair. They only know how to deal with straight hair. I wish people would let this whole “white ideal” go. It’s 2009 for Godsake! Haven’t we accepted there is more than one type of beauty yet? Damn!

  • Sim1

Its a stupid sterotype that has permeated our community. Good hair is any hair that is healthy and well cared for. Leave it at that.

  • sasha

It is all hair !! I get so tired of hearing someone say I got “good hair” Hell even when mine has crinkles (nappy) it is good hair to me cus it is clean and healthy!!

  • BMW

That’s so true, so many black women don’t understand how to deal with kinky hair. It’s your hair, get fimilar with it. I’ve been natural for 5 years and had to learn how to take care of it.

  • ROD

The only good hair bad hair statement or debate should be about if it is cleaned and taken care of not if it is straightend or if you have a weave or wig to look closer to a person from Europe. Blacks are the only ones on the planet that their God given hair is not considered good unless it is like a white persons. The Trina wigs and things of that nature make you look like a straight fool.

We all know full well what good hair is….
Good hair is hair that’s softer than super kinky, coarse, hard to manage hair. It does’nt have to silky and wavy or long down your back…it’s a matter of manageability.

  • http://comcast FoXY

Good hair is healthy hair & healthy scalp… There’s good straight hair, good thick nappy hair, good red hair, etc… I’ve seen whites with bad hair, mixed people with bad hair, blacks with bad hair, etc….

  • http://bossip wendy

@Acacia I totally agree with you. You don’t have to be “mixed” to have good hair. Healthy hair is “good hair”. A perfect example of “good hair” is Oprah Winfrey, it’s all hers, she doesn’t wear a weave because she needs to, she wears a weave for the correct reasons because she wants to enhance the look of the style of her hair that day. Her hair is long and beautiful, as long as your hair is healthy, weather you have a perm, dreadlocks, short or long, as long as your hair is healthy. If you are going to wear a weave, perm or dreadlocks just make sure it is done by a professional because all these kitchen weaves and perms ain’t cutting it for black women. My mom is a cosmetologist and I am an esthetician and most of my friends are cosmetologist so I am blessed to have them around.

Good hair is healthy hair. But I think what people mean when they say it is just that it is easier to manage.

  • http://Bossip Soul Ese

Good hair doesn’t fall out during sex!!!

  • http://bossip Whoa!

Let’s stop with this “good hair is clean hair” or “healthy hair.” Yall know damnn well good hair means hair that is not coarse/kinky/nappy, etc.

We cannot turn over generations of self hatred over in one night. Hell I know better. I hate the term myself, but it’s not going no where no time soon.

A black woman’s hair is truly her crown. Hell there’s plenty of black men/women that will not procreate with another black person depending on the grade/texture of their hair.

using a relaxer is my only flaw. And as much as the these men say they hate weaves, they’re the main reason black women wear them if you ask me. Yall damn sure don’t want us being natural. I have yet to come across a guy who isn’t anti-natural/locks.

  • barb

im sorry yall but satan got my cracking up!!

  • ww

keep it real, whites and blacks both have hair that requires help. they straighten theirs, blacks do too. theirs can be soft and silky or coarse and frizzy, and so can blacks. if anybody got natrually good hair its the handful of east indians born with it.

  • ww

and stop with the locks, that isht aint natural either. that is a style that incorporates dead hair with living hair to make artificially long looking hair.

  • http://bossip Whoa!

    @ww

I hear that. East Indians have BEAUTIFUL thick heavy hair. And it just grows and grows.

How do you come up with that assumption? when you lock your hair it doesn’t involve any chemicals.

  • Breeze

My definition of “good hair” is natural hair that grows from your scalp- that you can manage/maintain.

  • Ms Truth

BORING TOPIC!!! Tyra did the show to help her ratings. Good, Bad, Ugly… who cares. As long as you are not bald you are OKAY.

  • Joy

Well to me good hair is MY hair. It is healthy, natural, and apart of me. It is what God gave me and wanted me to have. Good hair is being able to LIVE without running from water (water is LIFE). Good hair is hair that is well taken care of no matter what your texture is. Trust me you can tell who takes care of their hair. Jill scott’s hair is natural and taken care of. Christina Milian’s hair is not taken care of. People fear what they dont know and sense most black girls get perms slapped on their heads they know nothing about the beauty of HAVING your own hair. They think natural hair is just an afro – when it’s not. It’s versatile. I date men of all races and every single one has loved my hair – except the black ones seemed to be more “accepting” because of the texture. I’d rather natural, strong, soft hair than a broken off mess of track glue, perms, braids, wigs, etc. It’s sexier. I can shower with my man without ducking from the shower lol and he can play and pull to his heart’s content. It sets me apart from the typical black female.

  • Uh huh…

I am so tired of people bashing weaves. Okay, I understand that some sistahs rock the 18″ Indian Remy weaves, or the weaves in colors that aren’t found in nature. But some of us wear weaves because we have to. I went to a hairdresser about 3 years ago who completely destroyed my hair. By the time I discovered that she didn’t know what she was doing, my hair had either thinned or fallen out in various places. It has never grown back. I wear a weave in order to hide the damage that has been done to my hair, not because I want “good” hair, or because I think I’m white, or because I’m ashamed of my natural hair.
I love who I am as a Black woman and I also love the fact that I have the FREEDOM to wear my hair as I choose without having to defend myself.

  • http://bossip Whoa!

    @Niasia

Well I have very thick and coarse hair. I’m thankful that it’s very strong and even tho it’s been relaxed since I was a little girl, it hasn’t thinned or damaged. And the front is honey blond (don’t judge, I get major compliments because it compliments my complexion). However, I sooooo wanna stop relaxing my hair. But I am scared because it’s BLACK people who judge you the most. I was natural for 3 years while I was in college. NEVER HEARD THE END OF IT!

  • Joy

    @ Whoa!

Why do you care about what people think? What leverage do their thoughts have over you? If it’s something you really wanna do then research it. You wouldnt have to cut all your hair off at once. There is a thing called transitioning where you gradually let new growth grow out and clip the permed ends. You can flat iron the new hair to make it blend.

  • http://bossip Whoa!

    @Joy

I know I know. I shouldn’t care what ANYONE thinks. But after a while it DID get to me. Even my own grandmother was constantly riding me about it. My mom has locs (she’s never been a hair person anyway, always loved to cut her hair off) and my grandmother hated it when she decided to grow them. I’m like HELLO, YOU’RE BLACK!!!

Here in NYC there are plenty of natural hair care salons. It can be time consuming tho, but you have a point. I hope one day I can gather the courage to go natural. I hate that I’m poisoning myself every 4 wks for the sake of straight hair.

  • elle

The asians and indians are getting rich off of all you chics out there rocking fake hair and nails while y’all go broke using your rent to do your hair and nails smh good hair is healthy hair as has been said time and time again, i’m so glad to see there are people with sense that comment on this site

nappy hair is beautiful you can do just about anything with it. The kinkyness of it is what adds originality to the race itself not to mention the flava. They say its not good because it can’t be combed that’s fine because curly hair can’t be combed whether it be tightly coiled or loosely curled. Everyone is different and not meant to have straight limpy hair that gets hella greasy after it hasn’t been washed making the person wearing it look like a cave dwellers. Be proud of who you are nappy hair and all it’s beautiful, original, and can be styled however you like

  • SuperHuman

@trexfrombollywood true!!!lol!! all races got good and bad hair but most black folks have nappy snapp! the afro comb unhappy hair!!

Good hair is how well you take care of it. I’ve seen some white ppl with dry frizzy hair, mixed ppl with dry, spilt ended hair, and blk ppl with some dry, tough hair…..and asians with some stringy dry hair, indians with greasy looking hair…..
To Sum it up, good hair=healthy hair

  • GoodKarma4Me

Tyra is a jack ass, and her topics are always empty, and thoughtless…

  • Joy

  • http://bossip Whoa!

    @Niasia

Yes hon I know all about the Dominicans. I’m in NYC and I alternate between them and my black hair salon. I don’t get blowouts tho. I just get a wash n roller set and brush it out into a style. I see so many black girls in their in there faithfully every week getting their hair blown out because they want that “whip appeal.”

After a while, you see their hair start thinning out, the hair doesn’t “whip” anymore, and it’s breaking tremendously. I want to tell them, honey, you CAN NOT get blowouts all tyhe time. You’re smoking out your hair shaft. But some of them will never learn.

Like I said, I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. Especially if I want to have kids one day since they’ve said it’s not good for pregnancy cause the chemicals from perms enter your bloodstream.

    *sigh*

  • Jamaican+Puerto Rican+Dominican=Me

I’ve been natural since Nov 2006. I would never put a relaxer in my hair again. My hair is so verstialle. Right now I have it in an afro. I can wear my hair in braids, weave, and I’m going to get it blown dried straight by the Dominicans sometime during the fall. My hair is so much more healthier. One day my hair is going to be waistlenght and natural.

Funny thing though, once I went natural, I noticed that Black men stopped giving me attention. In fact, I get so many negative comments from Black people mostly Black men. Black men are some of the biggest hypocrites when it comes to hair/skin color. They are always claiming that they want a girl with natural hair or dark skin and always get mad when Black women wanna put weaves in their hair. But they would never give a woman with natural hair a chance. I haven’t been with a Black guy since I was natural. My current boyfriend is White and he loves my hair natural. He could careless. I just wanna know, why do Black men always try to tell Black women to go natural and yet they are disgusted by natural hair?

    ———-

As long as you’re happy I wouldn’t worry about who is disgusted with it. Some people are molded by society and can’t think for themselves. They feed off of what everyone else is doing/thinking. Different strokes for different folks. I think some of the most beautiful women are natural. Bre, Nik, yaya, eva, jade and fatima from antm and countless other models in hollywood are natural. It’s all about how you take care of it and your own self confidence.

GOOD HAIR IS WHAT WE BLACK PPL CLASSIFY AS “STR8 HAIR – LIKE WHITE PPL HAIR” – ITS A SAD INJUSTICE TO BLACK PPL THAT SOCIETY PROMOTES STR8 HAIR AS “GOOD HAIR” AND KINKY OR NAPPY HAIR AS BAD HAIR WHEN THEIR BOTH NATURAL.

YOU ONLY NEED TO LOOK AT THE AMOUNT OF BLACK WOMEN THAT USE CHEMICALS TO GET THEIR HAIR STR8 – ITS VERY SAD!

  • Mixed Cutie

I’m mixed race (latin, black AND white) and this ish has always interested me. I agree with what most on here are saying: good hair= healthy/loved hair.

My hair is naturally VERY curly and that is the only way I’ve EVER worn it. I straightened it for the first time in 27 years 2 months ago and I have to say I was shocked at what I heard from friends and co-workers. Apparently…straight hair made me more “approachable and nice-looking” LOL, really? WTF is wrong with society and this idiotic belief that if hair isn’t sleek and straight it isn’t “good”?
I say love your sh*t ’cause you will be very disappointed if you look for others to love it for you.

Although my hair keep growing, I still take care of it like I should, in between visits to the shop. and ladies you DO NOT have to chop all of your hair off to go natural, because I didnt and my hair is beautiful and healthy. i guess we still gotta alot of work to do on our self-image as a people.

i love my hair and it aint the old school definition of “good”. i used to feel ashamed of my hair. then several years ago, i lost a big big chunk of it. then i got my mind right and realized the beauty of my hair. i straighten my hair because my hair skills are terrible, but i don’t color it. feel sorry for my daughter, y’all, since she’s stuck with me doing her hair. she has gorgeous, nappy, fluffy, fine, shiny brown hair. but of course we live around a bunch of pink toes so she wants “down” hair. i’m always complimenting her on her hair.

No need to have indians blood to have curly or wavy hair. If only you know more about the diversity of Black people (skin tone or hair texture), you would know that in Africa (be Central, West, East, South) you have people with coarse, wavy, curly hair.. with no mix heritage. Ignorance about your own community make people make the worst assumptions. Hey, there are also people with brown, grey and blue eyes syndrome in Africa. Therefore whatever you guys in the US are now is just a reflection of what has always existed in Motherland… don’t just stuck to the stereotype (broad noses, thick hair, dark sienne complexion) and thinking that curly hair or light skin in your family is only due to mixing. DNA evolves for sure but the point is, you can find the same type of people (features, hair…) with all diversity you have in US in Africa. That says alot about so called mixing and close the discussion on good/bad hair… which is just a way to once again draw the line between Black that are said to be more African and those who are more close to the Caucasian models. For your information, in Motherland, you will find whatever you have there in the US or Caribbean. Check the Tuaregs, Fulanis, Khoisan, Ethiopians, Somali, Sudanese… and so on (Most of them have curly/coarse hair, thin noses, small lips, dark or light complexions, green, blue, black, brown eyes… And for information, they have no history or mixing except within the ancient and different tribes. Poverty and eurocentrist propaganda deepen ignorance. Do not fall for that. Whatever Black Americans or Caribeens are today has nothing different from what was, is and will be in Motherland. Caucasian or other human groups DNA has never impacted that much otherwise, there will be no Black people today. Just how we evolve with our much diverse set of feature, hue, hair texture…

Sometimes we think we know something to be true in fact it is not!!!
just like you think I am a dude,”I am a woman” you are wrong about me and maybe you are wrong about thinkng nappy hair is cool… Look at africa closely a lot of them have beautiful hair and are indeed hebrews! now look at the africans that we know are not hebrews nappy very unhappy hair .. lol..

  • Huh? (new on here but not 2 b confused with the other 1)

Good hair is whatever makes you feel good. If it is straight, kinky or curly and you like it for yourself and not what others think then it is good. I’m natural myself (never had a perm because I didn’t want one and because I don’t care what others think). As long as I like it everyone else should love it, lol.

    _________________________________________________________
No centuries of self hatred will not go away over night but it will happen if people like you would stop spreading it. Many people’s views are changing and many people’s concept of this term is changing and instead of basking in that you would rather be the crab in the barrel. You are contributing to the problem. You obviously are one of those people you speak about b/c I have met many black men who LOVE natural hair. So stop blaming men for what women chose to do with their hair. Granted it may play a part but you can’t put it all on them. As far as you using a relaxer being your only flaw, well that lets me see and better understand why you are so screwed up. You think you’re perfect.

I agree with many other posters. Good hair is hair that is healthy. I know plenty of biracial people who while their hair is very curly, wavy, etc it is no easier to comb or style than anyone else w/o the use of some styling tools and products. It really is time we got over this. WE are the ones that are keeping it going.

    SuperHuman,
Well seems to me like you have something against overly nappy hair. Sounds like a personal problem to me. *shrug*
I just know nappy hair wasn’t EVER considered ugly until recently in Earths history. Some of the most beautiful and gravity defying styles can only be obtained by having extremely nappy hair. You claim to know so much about Hebrews. I suppose you can trace your heritage to Yahuda because you have all the documentation, right? That somehow your documentation survived the Middle passage. How do you know who is Hamite and who is Hebrew? Hamites were brought here too. It is folly to try to disentangle yourself from something just because you find it undesirable. If it makes you feel better to say that Hebrews can’t have extremely nappy hair, then that’s on you. I prefer to go by The Word and The Word says nothing about Hamite hair verses Hebrew hair. I don’t even know if I MYSELF am truly a Hebrew. For all I know, I could be a Hamite. That’s why we are called the LOST house people of Israel. I know that Hebrews were black…anything beyond that is semantics. And I am intelligent enough to know that I do not know everything. Hebrews could have had straight hair or loosely waved? Why not tightly curled? No offense, but you sound like you’ve internalized European ideals. Is nappy hair really that repulsive to you? Really? It’s like that?

To all you brothers and sisters with VERY nappy hair, I just want to say this to you. You have a right to the inheritance that Yeshua left you. If another Black person tells you that you are not Hebrew because your hair is “too” nappy (whatever the hell that means) then they are teaching you false doctrine. They are no better than the pink people who tell you that they are better than you because the dead crap that grows out of your skull is “different” from the dead crap that grows out of theirs.

When it comes down to it. It is all an argument over something that is dead. LOL..and no one can see the irony in it.

GOOD HAIR OR IS THAT YOUR HAIR? IS SOMETHING THAT THE BLACK COMMUNITY HAS TO STOP! I DONT GIVE 2 SH*T IF YOU ROCK A WEAVE, A RELAXER, A TEXTURIZER OR WHATEVER, CAUSE YOU KNOW WHAT…ITS YOURS. IF YOU WANT TO SET IT ON FIRE AND RUN AROUND THE MALL PARKING LOT, GO RIGHT AHEAD, DONT BOTHER ME.

ONE THING THAT I DONT UNDERSTAND IS WHY SO MANY BLACK WOMAN PUT CHEMICALS IN THEIR HAIR. MANY BLACKS WONDER WHY THEY ROCK THE WEAVE CAUSE THEIR HAIR DONT GROW CAUSE TEXTURIZERS AND RELAXERS BREAKS THEIR HAIR OFF. NOW I AINT A NATURAL NAZI, CAUSE LIKE PREVIOUSLY STATED I DONT CARE WHAT YOU DO, BUT WHY SPEND ALL THIS MONEY TO ROCK ALL THIS FRIED, DYED AND LAYED TO THE SIDE HAIR. DAMN NEAR LIKE 80% OF AFRICAN AMERICANS HAVE CHEMICALS IN THEIR HAIR. IS IT CAUSE WE LIKE IT OR CAUSE WE ARE FOLLOWERS AND CONFORMING TO A EUROPEAN STANDARD OF BEAUTY?

Black people are the most unique people on the face of this earth. Everything about us is diffrent from our hair to our different skin tones but instead of lovin and embracing the fact that God choose to make us so diffrent we try to tear each other down and believe all these stupid sterotypes that are about black people. I love being black and i wish other black people would too.

Anybody can have good hair if they take care of it. Go type up keepitsimplesista or hairlista and you’ll see thousands of women with “good hair”. Good hair can be achieved with co-washing, coconut oils, and other natural oils. Reduced heat styling and stretch relaxers.

I happen to love my thick azz hair! It’s coarse and it is good. We are the only race who have versatility with our hair. Our hair actually provides us with more protection from the sun as does the melanin in our skin. It’s sad that some of us can’t see our true beauty.

  • http://www.bossip.com Toucheaway

As a locked black woman (9 years and counting) I can tell you that I have no shortage of men who wanna rock this thang, okay?

My locks are 18 inches long and the brothas are FASCINATED at their length and the care I give to them.

Some females are jealous and self-hating when they see them and after nine years of growing my locks, I still don’t get it. It’s like they resent me for showing them how beautiful natural hair is.

When I first started twisting my hair, everyone screamed, it was like I was joining some cult or something! But now that I’ve had them for so long, people around me accept that I’m going to wear my hair this way.

How deep is self-hatred and self-loathing in our community? When I first started locking my hair I thought I would have to get a CCW for the negative Black people who wanted to beat me up! No one could understand my journey into my own blackness and questioned my decision to look like God made me.

After all, who likes naps? They’re ugly, right? I heard “You need a perm”, “You got nice hair, why are you messing it up?” “Are you going to keep it like that?” “Can you take those out?”, etc. I once had a woman with the most HIDEOUS weave in America tell me that her “hair” was “better” than mine. I asked her what her natural hair looked like and she explained to me that it looked like mine but she felt that weave hair was an improvement. An improvement over the way God made you? I asked. She said that God had made a mistake, she was supposed to have Indian hair instead of the hair she had.

In the year 2000 I decided that for the second thousand years of my soul that I would live the way my Creator created me: beautiful, strong, Black and nappy!

After losing my hair to lupus and having it grow back six months earlier than the doctors told me it would through prayer and faith, I could never, ever go back to chemical straighteners. This discussion got me thinking about the day I decided to go natural and threw all my hair care products away. For one head I had a cardboard box full of shit: 2, 3 conditioners, heat styling shit, hair sprays of all kinds, gels and lotions, shampoo up the wazoo, all kinds of chemicals to maintain a chemical look.

Now I just used shampoo, conditioner, olive oil and tea tree when my scalp gets itchy and it’s all good.

YOU CANNOT PAY ME TO EVER AGAIN WEAR A CHEMICAL PERM OR A WEAVE. IT’S UNNATURAL, AND DAMAGING.

I love being nappy and wouldn’t change it for the world.

  • me (the original)® Okay, what Bossip reading Celeb is stalking Usher’s ex? LOL

Well, actually white women need to invest in a flat iron too because that mess on their heads ain’t all that good. It’s those Asians who have the pretty hair. White women have stringy, dingy, lifeless…well, I’m just sayin…lol

    ———————————–

LOL. True, I should have taken that out cause I even said in the same post I know white chicks who iron their hair.) But you know what? I am not lying, I have had Asian chicks tell me they wish they had my curls. Their hair is BONE straight and no matter what they do, no curl is going to take.

Now I won’t lie, I’d trade my curls in a heartbeat for bone straight hair because that’s just my preference, but it goes back to what I said before..women with straight hair want waves or curls. Women with curls and/or waves want straight hair. No woman is happy with her natural hair. If they could trade it in for something else, they would.

All thick hair is not coarse. My daughter’s hair is thick, but it is very soft and curly. I doubt that you will walk around with thick, coarse hair and no relaxer. I mean, some people do, but it’s a matter of personal taste. I don’t think this has to do with not loving one’s self. I have really fine, curly hair. People consider my hair as a good grade of hair, but I think it’s often unmanageable. I wear it naturally curly, or I press it it and wear a body wrap. However, I must say that if my hair was thick and coarse, I would definitely get a relaxer. There’s nothing wrong with thick, coars hair so don’t get me wrong, but it’s a problem when the hair is thick, coarse and nappy. That’s when the problem occurs…

  • Nico

The good hair bad hair thing is just another tool white people used to degrade black people. It looks like we fell for it cause now we degrade ourselfs.

  • Chinadoll08

I agree with the previous comments that healthy hair is good hair. Also people should not be condemned for their hair choices. For some people wearing extensions allows them to be creative without destroying their own hair. There is nothing wrong with relaxers, weaves, or being natural as long as it is a personal choice and it is not done out of self hate. I also agree with Marc B Honey that most people are not going to walk around with their coarse hair…Also guys who claim that they hate weaves will often walk straight pass the natural girl for the girl with the big booty and long flowing weave…..so be real ..

  • InnocentCorruption203

A healthy scalp produces healthy hair. It all starts with the scalp!!!!!!!!!!!! As far as good and bad thats just sum b*llsh*t. My hair is way past the middle of my back, I get a relaxer every 4 months. Since I get a perm is my hair bad, or because its long is it good? Neither just keep your scalp healthy, stop using so much product and lastly WRAP IT UP AT NIGHT!!!!

  • Kinky Baby

Good Hair is Kinky Hair; Hair that be in styled in any hairstyle imaginable. Let’s face it only those people with Kinky Hair can get a real hairstyle. Without Kinky Hair we would have to settle for a Cut and Color like everyone else. LOL.

  • http://bossip mamma

My bi-racial daughter has what some would consider kinky hair. It was adorable in a little afro but totally unmanageable. I was hell bent on going 100% natural, no chemicals until the hairdresser said that the pull and tug, constant putting in ponytails was doing more damage then treating it. I used a texture “softener” , not a texturizer or relaxer– teh softener is low in chemicals. It kept her curl but I can at least COMB her hair without her being in tears or the hair breaking off. U only have to use it about every 4 mos. Her hair is healthier now than when it was natural and more manageable

  • Aint 2 Proud 2 Beg

Everybody baldheaded nowadays. You look at black people and their hair 100 years ago and it was think, long, yet kinky natural hair. The chemicals that we have in our hair and in our food is the reason why even white ppl barely have hair anymore. White girls be rocking weaves now too.

On one hand, I’m hoping some of these posters that are explaining the old adage of good hair/bad hair is truly older because to think that the younger generation feels this way saddens me. I honestly thought that we as a people have progressed.

On the other hand, if they are truly the older folks, why is it that you can’t see outside of your box and explain the realness of “good hair?”

Yeah, WE KNOW what THEY mean when THEY refer to “good hair” but do we need to hang onto “their interpretation like a chain around our neck???

Is this something that another race threw upon us and we’re too ignorant to proudly decline??

  • Rozza♥ – Do You Like Fish Sticks?

    Hey Diva! How you doin’?

I have been wearing my own natural hair for a couple of years now, tried weave once many moons ago, and rocked braids off and on for a while. I have learned that good hair is hair that isn’t falling out in patches, breaking off, and shedding all over the place. It can be curly, kinky, nappy, silky, wavy, etc. We need to stop being so obsessed with our hair texture, and concentrate on what is inside.

I wear a fro now, and it does not affect how I am treated in the workplace. I get treated based on how I carry myself, and I get much respect. Men who are attracted to me want the real me, and I don’t have to keep up a front to keep him. Besides, men are always complaining about fake women, and how the woman they have now wasn’t the same one they met. Kinda like getting mad at a McRib sandwich because it was shaped like ribs but ain’t real ribs.

I defintely do not envy the wearing of hot-assed wigs and weaves, especially in the summer. Makes my scalp itch just thinking about it.

Natural hair gives you the freedom to enjoy the elements, enjoy “extracurricular activies”, and have a “wash-n-go” type life. After getting rid of chemical processes in my hair, in six months any dandruff I had cleared up, and my hair was softer and manageable. Of course I conditioned like crazy through those times but it has paid off tremendously.

Are you talking about the texture??? because they are softer. Well my hair are kinky but really soft like wool! so to me, your hair are not better than mine. they might be longer but im not sure they are not necessary healthier than mine. that’s all…

  • christie’s secrets

well most people from west /central african countries have kinky hair. if you go to east africa in some part like ethiopia, their hair are curlier and finer but they are mixed with arabian already, their skin is even different. If you go to north africa (arabaian and black i guess), women tend to have more curly hair than straigth. I know lots of arabian women who use relaxers, some others like the kabyle have fine european silky hair. So basically if you are black, african, your hair are more likely to be kinky coarse! Maybe not 100% but i can bet its more than 80%

All I’m trying to get you to understand is–

YES–the term “good hair” WAS INDEED used in ways to “rank” our people so to speak. However–haven’t we progressed enough as a people to widen the term to good hair equating to healthy hair?

The way rationalionize your “good hair” sets us back many years.

In one of my earlier posts, I used the terms of how we changed what we’re referred to as an example.

Question–If someone approached you and verbally referred to you as a “black gal” or negra woman”, would you accept that without the slightest of an attitude or should they deem you acceptable because of the “grade” of your hair?

To some white people–no matter how “light” we are or how long our hair flows, at the end of the day–we’re still ni&&ers!

@Black Lady: Maybe you get along with them becuase you may subconsciously have a chip on your shoulder with some African American women. Reminds me of the “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful” commercials. If you didn’t bring attention to your looks, and made that all about who you are, then you wouldn’t get what you perceive as hate. I don’t hate on women because of their looks, because I think I’m pretty fly ;-) but I will avoid conceited insecure ones who can’t get past their own appearances.

Besides, it’s just hair. If you woke up tomorrow and it was ALL on your pillow, could you get up, rub some oil on your bald head, tie on a fly scarf, and keep it moving? I can…

I do agree that SOME sistahs do give us the side eye and “hate” but honey let me let you in on a little secret–

    BREAK ‘EM DOWN!!!!!!

When I see that I get “those looks?” I actually take the time to find something positive in them and compliment them on it.

For instance–”Girl, I really like your bracelet” or “Girl–you rockin’ the hell outta that pocketbook!”

You’d be surprised at how you can turn a negative situation into a positive one.

At the end of the day–if someone’s going to hate then, let them waste that energy in doing so. You don’t have to fall into anyone’s trap because you don’t fit a set of standards their bound by!

    @ black lady–

I’m reading your posts and I’m beginning to understand some of your rationale.

You don’t have to fall into anyone’s trap because you don’t fit a set of standards their bound by!

about time some one can see what im saying black women come on blogs acting like light skin dont have good hair all dont have it cause there some light with nappy hair but this is where it comes from.

  • Z (Queen of Bossip Society and Happy to be Back Up Top)

So this is where some people are at!

  • Z (Queen of Bossip Society and Happy to be Back Up Top)

I wish someone would walk up to me with the nerve to say “you got that good hair.”

  • http://bossip Wendy

@Black lady, I don’t know what the hell you are talking about. I have 3 sister-in laws that are all bi-racial (mexican and black) and one of them are bald headed. That’s like saying all light-skin women are beautiful, I could think of a few that are not attractive at all. I have a carmel complexion and my hair is middle length and my hair is very, very , very soft. I don’t wear a perm and I can wear my hair curly or straight without any chemicals or without it getting all puffy when you press it. I bet when you press your hair it won’t stay straight, you would have to get a perm to make it stay straight or get a “hard press” because your hair won’t stay straight, I can gaurantee your hair doesn’t stay straight for more than a day. You have to remember I have 3 sister-in laws who are mixed and there hair doesn’t stay straight and they always tell me ” I would die for your hair”. They love my hair, my hair is fine, soft and I am not mixed with anything, even though I get ask if I am mixed all the time because my hair becomes so straight with just a little heat. I love my hair, they only thing I don’t love about my hair is that it is fine, so sometimes I wear pieces for thickness. If I don’t put a few pieces in my hair it won’t hold a curl but other than that, I am not bald headed, I am not mixed but to other people they put me in the same boat as yourself, they think that I am mixed, so you can’t say good hair comes from light-skined women sweetie. Both of my parents are dark. So explain that. I bet if you saw me you would be asking what are you mixed with too.

  • 1TruDiva w/the PlatinumVocals!!!™. The Jennifer Hudson concert was off the MEATRACK!!!!

    @ black lady–

It’s not that bloggers don’t understand you, sweetheart. What some of the bloggers can’t or refuse to reduce themselves to is the terminology of “good hair”–at least the old folks version of what good hair is.

Sweetheart- I have a diversity of people that report directly to me meaning, they come from all over the world: all shades, textures and degrees of hair!!

When I look at hair–I don’t equate good hair with a specific texture or grade. If it’s healthy, and not falling out in patches or you’re not standing over my desk flaking dandruff and, you actually take the time and energy to make your hair healthy and manageable, then that’s good hair!!

Long hair going down your back does not necessarily mean you have good hair.

I think that’s what some (including myself) are trying to get you to understand.

    Brb…

  • http://bossip Wendy

@black lady oh yeah a perfect example of light-skin doesn’t mean you have “good hair” is Beyonce. Her hair is nappy as hell and so is her sister and her mother’s. You remember how they hair looked when Destiny child first came out. THEY WERE BUSTED!!!! I am glad her mother is not doing her hair anymore. LOL.

  • black lady

1TruDiva w/the PlatinumVocals!!!™. The Jennifer Hudson concert was off the MEATRACK!!!!

good hair is not heathly hair thats not the term of that. thats not what good hair means. nappy hair when black women take care of they hair in its nautral state and treating it right then they hair type change cause nautral is where you should be to get a better understanding of what your hair can do and how it grows and what hair styles to try or whatever. heathly hair is naural hair that what heathly hair is not good hair.

@black lady I am talking about Beyonce’s hair, stay on the topic. I can care less about her successful as a matter of fact I am happy for her. If you haven’t read any of my post before. I will let you know I am married with no children, I am 33 years old and I live in a beautiful home in a great neighbor hood. So I am not hating on her success. I don’t have children and people ask me all the time, when are you gonna have some kid? Why don’t you have any children? So I know what she is going through. I don’t want any kids now, even though my clock is ticking, LOL but I tell people not now. Anyways we were talking about her hair. She has some nappy hair and so does her entire family. I just know I love my hair and a lot of light-skin women tell me that they would die for my hair.

you bought up beyonce imma bring up what all she is and done. nobody really knows how beyonce hair type is just cause your momther hair and sister hair is dones not means yous is. i dont know tina she wear weaves to much and for solange her hair was very short and she aint had that much hair. as for beyonce i onlysee her hair when she was a lil child and i aint even think to look at it for her hair type i dont go to her child pics that much anyways. most light skinned black women have good hair more then dark skinned and thats a fact. and there are some dark skinned that have good hair but u got it from the light skin side. i wonder how good is your hair i bet it cant beat my hair type lol

shocking your black but put a dog on your pic? dont you think that a lil white acting? y our acting white. before you come in here talking about good hair geting mad stop acting like the crackas then you can talk yo shit. untill you put up a dark skin black woman with an afro proud and black then you can talk to me. till then please stop it

  • Jaye ;-)

Honestly. How much do you wanna bet mama is still in high school? I can’t imagine any self-respecting woman would continue to embarrass herself in this way. What real woman proclaims she does not give a damn about spelling? I mean… I’m not saying you’ve gotta win Spelling Bee’s but SPELL CHECK can be a wonderful asset! The priorities here are ALL off kilter. Mama is talking about light skin and curly hair all the while sounding more ignorant than the “nappy headed black baby mama’s” she’s repeatedly condemning. Every last post she has contributed has been both a** backward in rationale and grammar.

Little tip for Black Lady… a TRULY beautiful woman knows beauty will only get her so far. Please take an English 1A course at the local community college.

Now if you’ll excuse me I have work to do. So I’ll just take my three college degree holding, two careering having, curly Afro sporting, Chocolate BLACK A** off to cupcake. My man awaits. And he LOVES this curly s**t! LOL

By the way. I’m sure light skin and curly hair will look GREAT on your next job application. If Palin can get as far as she did… Black Lady MAY have a chance!

Thanks for tha laughs yall. This s**t was TOO much! LOL

    Tootles!

  • Rozza♥ – Do You Like Fish Sticks?

@Black Lady: You must be new. Had that pic up. Been there, done that. And what does having a pet’s picture up have to do with “acting white”? Can you explain that? And acting like a cracka? Wow…if anyone has a jacked-up mentality, well – look at your previous posts, and if you can, try to read them. Then come back and try again. Until you can, please try to get help. You sound as if you need therapy and Jesus, and not necessarily in that order.

Or in lingo you can understand – You go rid sum of u back posits and find darker skin reedin posts and git som edumucation on the raddy tang.

@Black lady, That’s funny, that comment, “you can’t beat my hair type”. I will leave it right there, I guess “good hair” comes in all shades of women light and dark skin. Your funny but it was fun chatting with you Black Lady. At least you have remained a lady throughout all the attacks everyone has thrown at you today. May I ask how old you are, because that last comment was just a little immature but I love you anyways.LOL, Always remain a lady don’t let them drive you crazy on this site girl, I haven’t really seen any cursing or belitting in your statements so you go girl. You know I don’t curse, drink, smoke, fight or go to parties, I am pretty boring but people call me a good girl and I always remain a lady, So you don’t let them get to you and just for the record I probably don’t want you hair texture because I love how versatile my hair is but I don’t doubt you have a nice head of hair, you know us pretty girls do. LOL, I am not against you I am with you, I have “good hair” too remember, I am just trying to educate you and open your narrow mind, think outside your light-skin and you will see a lot of beautiful people around you of all shades in our community.

Good hair is healthy, neatly styled, clean hair. If your hair is growing and not breaking off or coming out in clumps your hair and health is good. It doesn’t matter how tightly coiled, wavy or straight. We have got to stop being so concerned about what “type” of hair we have ON our heads (other than to style it properly) and be more concerned about what is IN our heads.

Good hair is healthy hair, no matter what.
I have thin hair due to genetics and it can’t curl worth a damn thing, so i’ll get it straighten via pressing comb or relaxer. But some people just get relaxers or presses and don’t take care of it so their hair falls out, I moisture and style my hair whenever it’s permed or natural.

Also I receive touch ups & trims and my hair is still in tact. as I always say “I’d rather have short healthy hair, than long damaged hair.”
Whether it’s perm or no perm you need to learn how to take care of your hair and manage it

So what is this discussion still going on for? Someone said it so perfect…why are blacks still living in the 50′s and 60′s with these terms?

I’m all for taking care of the hair, but its a new day, a new year. We gotta stop wasting time talking about this.

And stop fighting the white girl, she’s a regular and regularily says comments that are off the chain, just let it burn.

    My people.

  • TKThomas

    Oopsssss…CORRECTIONS

    NOT WORSE!

NOW THATS SOME REAL TALK FOR YA A$$ !!!!

  • TKThomas

and another thing…SOME OF US BLACK CHICS DO NOT LOOK GOOD WITH OUR NATURAL HAIR. YEAH I SAID IT! SOME OF US ARE CUTE NO MATTER THE STYLE. BUT SOME OF US LIKE ANY OTHER WHITE OR ASIAN CHIC, NEEDS SOME HELP AND NAPPY HAIR MAKES SOME OF US LOOK WORST!

IF YOU HAVE A HARD OR UGLY FACE DON’T PIC A HAIR STYLE THAT HELPS THAT LOOK! JUST LIKE IF A WHITE CHIC HAS AN UGLY FACE SHE DOESN’T NEED TO ROCK A PUNK ROCK STYLE WITH PINK AND YELLOW STRIPES IN IT! SAME HERE IF YOU AIN’T CUTE AND YOU HAVE HARD NAPPY HAIR leave that style alone AND FIND A STYLE THAT WILL MAKE YOU LOOK BETTER!

    NOT WORST!

NOT THATS SOME REAL TALK FOR YA A$$ !!!!

Good hair is any hair in which a comb doesn’t break in it.

  • Lila from paris

In south africa , in europe , in brazil,in congo , in ethiopa , in usa,in colimbia ,in france…

the black female relaxe their hair , they think that to have natural hair is no god, not beautifyl !
they use lace front , dark and lovely , wigs,..

The principal question is WHY ????

I’m in paris , and that the same think !

  • Nikki

I didn’t know how to take care of my hair until I got with a stylist who was natural. Hair is nothing but dead cells. The more you put fruits, veggies, and proteins filled with vitamins to increase cell turnover rate, the more “good” your hair will be. And REAL organic shampoos and conditioners works wonders. Stop spending half of your paychecks on hair products that DO NOT WORK!….And if anyone can find me a good BLACK OWNED beauty supply store, specializing in BLACK haircare, I’d appreciate it.

    @A_List

THANK YOU! I get so tired of folks, especially BLACK PEOPLE perpetuating that East Africans are mixed nonsense. A FEW tribes in Somalia have significant admixture and are recognized as mixed by other Somalians, but most Somalis aren’t mixed with Arab or anything else. There are tribes in Ethiopia that have the darkness, kinky hair and features commonly associated with West Africa. Not ALL Somalians look like the models Iman or Waris Dirie or have long silky Polynesian hair flowing down their backs, that is a common misconception. But I’m sure it’s not to hard to guess why white media loves to highlight the East Africans that have this look. I’ve seen many Somalians that would be virtually indistinguishable from other black people. The dichotomy of east African,”good” hair, narrow noses/West African “nappy” hair, wide noses is a false one. Things are far more complicated.

I am hispanic (Dominican to be exact) and I perm my hair and roller set it on a weekly basis. I do not consider myself to have good or bad hair. I take care of my hair. There is a misconception that only women with stick straight hair have the so called good hair and that’s simply not true.

Ladies, make sure you take care of your mane with weekly or bi-weekly deep conditioning treatments, trim and don’t overprocess and all will be fine. Whether your hair is straight, curly or kinky, the most important factor is that your hair is healthy!

  • http://cnn.com santana caress

    keep it natural!

  • Marc B’s Honey (…so much sweeter than sugar)

Just as a rebuttal on my last statement…I feel what black lady is saying as far as it not necessarily coming from mixed people. Good hair isn’t prejudice. We have learned to judge people according to certain things, but at the end of the day, if you take care of yourself, you’re just as good as anyone else.

I knew the real ignorant sh*t would start on this blog. It’s simple guys—–when folks say good hair they mean that their hair has some thin, straight and curly components to it. What it also says is that somewhere along the blood line—-great great grandma or great great grandpa had some dealings with someone who were not 100% african–more than likey white, east Idian or what they referred to as malato (light skinned/mixed blacks) or other words house nigros and a child was born. But the folks with good sense knows that good hair is strong healthy hair no matter the texture. But ignorant black folks calls good hair any texture of hair that resembles 100% African. It’s ashame but that’s how folks were institutionalized and brainwashed to think….you know—–it’s the house nigro field nigro mentality. Plain and simple. I hope I was able to clear things up for the ignorant and confused.

To Jaye ;-) —-honey, please don’t write anything else on this blog. You should be embarrassed! TOTALLY!

im bringing “nappy” back! nappy is the new black

  • K-mia

i agree that “good hair” is healthy or like I say “happy hair.” Hair that is happy is manageable because it has been well taken care of. As far as black womnen go, I think a lot of us are told to perm our hair starting when we are so young, that we never really get a chance to see what our natural hair looks like. U just might like the way it looks naturally. I went natural a couple years back on accident really, and I realized that I love my natural hair. If i want to wear it straight, then I just flat iron it and it looks even better than a perm.

  • Don’t mind me

Good hair is NOT someone elses hair

  • Souljagir

Good hair damn sure isn’t Tyra’s lace front that’s horse hair and that’s all she should of been focusing on during her show and how secure would she feel if she didn’t have it?

  • tasha

do white people wear weaves? *just wonderin* or its really a black thing??????

  • Carla

There’s another reason why I relax my hair, due to the fact that I swim a lot in the pool and at the beach it wouldn’t make sense to press and curl. But I will get one of those cool ionic flat iron that sounds like a good idea. In the event that I have a job interview or some other special gala party to attend.

It’s simple, some light skinned chicks have good hair, some don’t, some Brown and Black skinned chicks have nappy hair, some have good hair, lol…

  • http://stewartsynopsis.com/Site%20Index.htm We “Blacks” Are The REAL Hebrew Israelites

LOL@White people have been weaving their hair a lot longer than Black people.
You need to check out the hair pieces in the Cairo museum. :D Chicks had all kinds of falls, and braided wigs.

We did it first. As usual.

  • melissa

I wish it weren’t still neccessary for us to have these conversations.

  • melissa

My hair has been natural for the past few years. And what I find the most interesting is that most of the black women that tell me they love my hair have relaxers or weaves.

  • Jaye ;-)

    @ Mahogany

Not that your opinion of me really matters, this is after all cyberspace. However I would like to know exactly what you are you referring to.

    ?

  • Diadem Kiss

Black women are beautiful FULLSTOP!! Re: hair (whatever makes you happy I say)whatever the texture, style etc, etc. if you really love yourself it will show in the way you carry yourself.

  • like whoa

    @ Uh Uh…

If you say your not ashamed of your hair, so why dont you wear it like that, simply withouth the weave, with afro for example. Its much better. Burn your weave down girl!!
We have to be proud of what we are.

I have curly hair, and i dont relax it for about 7 years. Im proud of my afro. Be proud too!

  • Carla

Stephanie, okay I don’t just let my hair just dry, lol. After swimming in chlorine I wash and condition the tresses with this product called Ultra Swim. This shampoo is specifically tailored for extracting chlorine from the hair.

  • Carla

Is it my imagination haven’t you noticed that a lot Black guys have more hair (I’m not talking about hair types but guys with lion mane amounts of hair, lol) then some of these Black chicks ? Why is that ? Well, the next time I see a Brother with a lovely mass of hair I’m going to find out some information, lol… I have a lion’s mane my self, so no I don’t wear a weave, lol… Although some peopole ask me if where I bought my hair from, lol….
