Woman Leaves Granddaughter In Freezing Car To Go To Casino

A 56-year-old grandmother was arrested Saturday after she reportedly left her 5-year-old granddaughter in a car in below-freezing temperatures while she gambled at a New York casino.

Renee Osby allegedly tried to bring her granddaughter, Jordan, into Resorts World Casino New York City in Queens earlier that day, but was denied when security told her that children were not allowed inside, the New York Daily News reports.

Security guards became suspicious when Osby returned without the child, so they began searching the parking lot and found the woman’s car with the child inside. The car was not heated and temperatures were below freezing, according to the Daily News.

The guards contacted the police, who arrested the grandmother on charges that she acted “in a manner injurious to a child” under 17 years old. Osby told police that she had just gone inside the casino to cash a check, but sources told the police that the grandmother was inside the casino for over an hour and was seen playing the slots. Jordan was returned to her mother, both of whom live with Osby, according to the newspaper.

“Earlier today, Resorts World security observed a 5-year-old child in an unattended vehicle in the parking lot,” Resorts World Casino said in a statement released Saturday to CBS New York. “They were able to safely remove the child from the vehicle and immediately called 911. The safety and security of everyone on Resorts World property is our No. 1 priority.”

Osby was released Sunday without bail after a judge noted that she has strong community ties and that the child was not injured. Several family members in attendance began crying when the judge added that although Osby would be released, she would not be able to see her granddaughter. Since the child and her mother live with Osby, Osby will move in with her brother in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, N.Y., according to the Daily News.
