Let’s start a new list, shall we? We already have a list of the 935 lies that the Bush administration used to sell the Iraq War to the American people. Let’s look at the lies that the Bush administration is using to manipulate Congress into voting for another ill-conceived and shameful policy.

That domestic spying was limited to “people with known links to al Qaeda and related terrorist organizations.” Then we learned the truth: that the net cast was much wider, covering millions of American phone calls. Then there was the lie that the FISA wasn’t flexible enough. The truth, of course, was that spying could take place without a warrant for 72 hours. And then there was the lie that, gosh, darn, there was just too much paperwork to fill out with each FISA application. Even though the truth was that Bush administration was able to fill out over 113 of those applications since 9/11 (the total applications in the FISA court’s 23 year history? 46.) Then there was the lie that the government could have prevented the 9/11 attacks had it not had to ask the FISA court for a wiretap. But the truth was that the failure to tap Moussaoui was a result of a clumsy FBI, and not a paralyzed DOJ. Then there was the lie that this domestic spying program was necessary in the wake of 9/11, but the truth is that the Bush administration approached the telecoms as early as February 21, 2001.

The most repulsive lie, however, is that telecoms who aided the administration in turning this nation’s massive spying apparatus on its own citizens were just “doing their patriotic duty.” When asked to let the government into their buildings and into their networks and into the privacy of Americans without a warrant or court order, the telecoms jumped into action. They bravely opened their doors, valiantly opened their networks, and, gee, the only thing that was missing was attaching an American flag to each telephone pole and placing a fresh-baked apple pie at the foot of each tower.

Republicans would have their Democratic colleagues buy into this lie, just as they have bought into so many others. But does this sound like a company whose heart is bursting with “patriotism”?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A telephone company cut off an FBI international wiretap after the agency failed to pay its bill on time, according to a U.S. government audit released on Thursday. [...]

[The DOJ Inspector General] cited the case in which a wiretap under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which governs electronic spying in terrorism and intelligence cases, was disrupted due to an overdue bill.

“Late payments have resulted in telecommunications carriers actually disconnecting phone lines established to deliver surveillance results to the FBI, resulting in lost evidence, including an instance where delivery of intercept information required by a … FISA order was halted due to untimely payment,” the audit said.

Ah, can you smell the sweet, sweet smell of patriotism, unadulterated by selfish corporate concerns! If the telecoms break the law, they shouldn’t face the consequences. But if the government breaks its contract with the telecoms, well, hey, that FISA wiretap wasn’t that important anyway. And what’s a little lost evidence between uber-patriotic friends?

There isn’t a flag pin big enough to cover the truth here. The same “patriotism” that was used to ram the PATRIOT ACT though a quivering Congress, the same “patriotism” that was used to silence criticism of a reckless president deadset on taking this nation to war, the same “patriotism” that was used and is used to bully our elected officials into continuing to fund the Iraq Debacle, that same “patriotism” is now being used to sweep an illegal, massive domestic spying program under the carpet.

As Senator Dodd and others have repeatedly emphasized, the telecoms already have a “good faith” defense which can protect them from pending and future domestic spying lawsuits. Slathering on a layer of telecom amnesty over that serves no purpose but to suffocate the rule of law, excuse illegal conduct, and shield this administration’s actions from judicial scrutiny.

And for members of Congress who embrace this endeavor? For those who contend that rewarding those “selfless” telecoms who have acted in a most selfish manner is the proper way to proceed? For them, for those in Congress who appear to be suspended a state of perpetual gullibility, for those who bought 935 lies and stand ready to buy hundreds more at the expense of the American people — for them, there is no flag pin large enough to hide their shame. There is no flag waving high enough to overshadow their misjudgment, and there is, above all else, no red, white, and blue excuse for blacking out the truth about how this government has treated its people.

I so love this latest saga in hip hop mayor’s life. Who needs the Young and the Restless when you have Kwame?

They were always involved with politics, and when he started getting into government, she was the whip behind his campaigns. I think maybe they had a relationship then, but it was off and on, and life got in the way where Kwame met other women, namely his current wife, and Christine met other men. You can think you love someone, and you can, but it’s different when it makes it so anything you do together seems RIGHT when it is wrong. This is how people think all the time. They will justify affairs and let it go on as long as it can. I almost had an affair on my ex boyfriend, but when I realized I could honeslty justify it, I knew it was over, and I ended it.

This is now coming up because last August the mayor and Christine were accused of firing a few police department staffers and it went to trial. The police say they were fired because they were investigating some wrongdoing by the mayor professionally and personally. Kwame and Christine both lied on the witness stand saying they had no personal or sexual relationship in 2002 and 2003 or ever. So, now they’re in deep trouble for perjury.

I am a proud resident of the City of Detroit. A city that is left to deal with the numerous and tradgic poor choices Kwame has made as mayor. I think it is important that as citizens we continue to support our city, but this is my last time excepting his, “poor me” defense when it comes to his lack of INTEGRITY! He needs to grow up. As a PUBLIC OFFICIAL who has control over public money, this goes far beyond his “personal life”. This man was FUNDING his affair using Detroit taxpayers money. Money that could have gone towards solving those 1500 homicides, fixing up the raggedy ass school districts, and neighborhoods. He brought the entire city of Detroit into this mess when he used city equipment to text his mistress, flying her ass across the country and screwing her in hotels and that RESIDENTS OF DETROIT paid for. I don’t know about you, but I can think of better ways to spend their money. Just some food for thought.

I found out about my husbands affair like this. He had a “secret” email account, that his ignorant ass failed to log out of as he was running out the door late for work. I just happened upon it, and what I read was hurtful and sickening. These two wrote to each other about all their sexcapades. I was sick! I feel for the spouses here, because to find out like that, reading details of an adulturous affair hurts like hell.

Where were you during Ken Starr’s extensive probe and Clinton’s impeahment hearings. And, since Hilary is now a presidential candidate, talk of her husband’s affairs have resurfaced. So yes, Clinton’s infidelities are “still be dwelled upon”…In the case of DUMB KWAME, he is not of the same persuasion (shall we say) of Clinton, so his political career is pretty much toast. I suggest that he switch gears and work in the hotel industry after his stint in federal prison and he seemed to patronize them so much with his mistress during his time in office….

For those that asked, thanks for the concern. We split for a while, 7 months. We have 2 children, and he has always been a great father. Our kids were devestated. He and I have since reconciled, but I still hold a grudge, and it has been hard for me to forgive and forget. However, I am not perfect, and have done things too that were for revenge, I only brought pain to someone else in the process. The web gets more tangled… we are a work in process. He says he loves me, and has apologized repeatedly, but the trust factor is missing now. It was just last year that this happened you know, so the wound is still trying to heal. For our kids we are gonna try to make it work. Thanks for all the concern. I still love him, and that makes things more complicated.

That’s what I’ve been calling my so called “Hip Hop” and “Thuggish” Detroit city mayor. I’m so out done with his madness that I want to start a campaign to oust his dumb azz. Let’s face it when he ran at 31 years of age, I didn’t vote for this unscrupulous, immature yet highly connected man. I knew he wasn’t ready and as I waited in traffic on the Lodge Freeway listening at how he won the election, all I could do was shake my head. Now I understand what I was feeling that day…he wasn’t ready. Obviously, he still isn’t.

What pisses me off the most is that my city spent 9 million dollars of taxpayers money to “settle” this Whistleblower case where he claimed those men were liars and frauds and that the truth would come out. Well, guess what BIG DUMMY, the truth DID come out, but it wasn’t quite what you expected was it? I own a home in Detroit and pay $3200 in property taxes per year. My car insurance is $1700 per year. My homeowners insurance is $1600 per year. They just raised the water rates…again. Now multiply that by 800,000 residents and now you see where the 9 million came from, right?

But can I get a new garbage can because the possums have eaten a whole in it, nope. They’re on backorder. Can I get the 4 out of 6 bulbs in the street lights on my block changed? Nope. Can I call any city department and get someone to answer the phone without a 30-90 minute wait?

This is the only thing my city is talking about. My child and the mayor’s youngest child attend the same school. As I went to pickup my child, I noticed the whole cafeteria was buzzing about this BIG DUMMY. Many were standing around saying, we should just leave him alone and let him run the city. Well, in my eyes, he’s finished the race and ran Detroit further into the ground. I am appalled at his lack of integrity, his lack of decency and his belief that the people of Detroit could be bamboozled, swindled and hoodwinked—and never notice what a bum and LIAR—he truly is.

Yes, I’ve seen his wife at school functions and she’s always smiling and grinning. She knew. She had to know. He don’t f&&^k that many women and she NOT know. I pray for his sons. He’s got 3 boys who are watching and absorbing all of this and I pray for them. My child asked me what’s going on with the mayor Mommy? Even though some say it was five years ago it’s coming to light now because all the lies are coming back to haunt his ass. Not only did the city pay out 8 million to two officers they will pay more to the young man for his mother’s death. He just giving the lawyers more fuel. Kwame won the last election with 53% of the votes and 47% went to his opponent, Hendrix. It was so close that he called for a recount. So judging Detroit as a whole and calling us fools for putting him in office again is just like holding everyone in the United States responsible for electing Bush a second time.

P.S. His opponent was also black so people didn’t vote for Kwame just because he was a black man

I don’t believe Kwame can run again for a 3rd term. Right? Lol…notice how no one is referring to him as MR. MAYOR or MAYOR KWAME KILPATRICK. For the record the issue is so much bigger than him cheating on his wife. What goes on between a man & a woman within a marriage is their business! Women wake up and be real about what you would do in the same situation. Because men cheating…MARRIED OR UNMARRIED is NOT A NEW STORY.

For people who continue to say “oh it was only 8 million dollars for the Whistleblower lawsuit or these text messages were from 2003″….HELLOOO the point is DETROIT doesn’t even have a pot to piss in & window to throw it out right about now folks!!!! WE SHOULD ALL BE OUTRAGED. 14,000 text messages are years of collected messages and the city doesn’t even have money to save our schools right now while people are saying its only 8 million. This is one of the reason how Hurricane Katrina was so devastating. God will give you so many signs to warn you before the storm hits. Open your eyes and be prepared. You can’t learn an entire life lesson from BET folks.

We as Detroiters put these damn people like Bates, Sharon McPhail, Monica Conyers and Martha muthadamn Reeves in office. Stop making excuses when we see the writing on the wall black people. No one is perfect, but kids & families are suffering while the mayor is not handling the city business properly. I don’t care if he partys like its 1999, but make sure your city is growing adaquately too and dont contribute to the years of deep seeded turmoil. Just admit DETROIT we put the wrong man in office and really look at THE CITY ISSUES next time around when selecting a new candidate and not put a man/woman in office based off of his family being politically tied, being a Cass Tech graduate, or being our f*cking hip hop mayor. We need to get beyond all that glimmer is gold bull. You can put a pimp in a robe and call him a preacher too.

She had the most rude attitude and was on the defensive side. Oh well that was 2003 so…. but, it still doesn’t go away. I feel sorry for the spouses. I’m from Detroit. I never voted for Mayor Kwame either time that he was elected. It was the previous bloggers that are misinformed, uneducated, that voted for him and will probably vote for him again if he ran for office. This Mayor has had one scandal after another. The taxpayer of this city had to pay the police officers $9million dollars because they knew about his affair and all of his dirty dealings. When they tried to do an investigation he fired them. What about the stripper, Strawberry and the party at the Manoogian Mansion? He bought his wife a red SUV with city money. He is a joke! The street lights don’t work in most parts of the city. Now he is trying to sell the city parks for 8.5 million dollars. All the idiots that voted for him get exactly what they deserve. A mayor that think he is above the law. He and Christine both perjured themselves on the witness stand. 90% of the residents think they should resign but I bet he won’t go down without a fight. Whenever the recall petition get circulated I am definetly signing my name as a registered voter.

Kilpatrick’s reported tryst saddens N.C. King event organizers

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Reports that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick had a woman other than his wife with him at the Grove Park Inn before speaking at the Martin Luther King Prayer Breakfast left event organizers disappointed Friday.

Detroit television station WXYZ aired a report Friday that the mayor had been with a woman who called herself Carmen Slowsky and that the two had enjoyed champagne and a whirlpool bath together at a cost of more than $500.

A copy of the hotel invoice shows a stay arranged for two.

A prosecutor in Michigan launched an investigation Friday into allegations that Kilpatrick lied under oath about an affair with his top aide.

Kilpatrick is married, and news of an extramarital affair with his chief of staff had surfaced in Detroit recently. Kilpatrick has said the affair was over.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County sponsors the annual prayer breakfast and pays travel, hotel and meal expenses for its keynote speaker each year, said Oralene Graves-Simmons, chairwoman of the association.

The association also pays speakers up to $5,000, but Kilpatrick charged no fee for his speech, Graves-Simmons said.

“I haven’t seen the invoice yet,” she said, “so I don’t know what’s on it. But if there’s anything that we did not agree to pay for on it, we will ask him to pay for that himself.”

Graves-Simmons said she did not see Kilpatrick with a woman while he was here.

“If this is true, it is a shock,” she said. “When we select our speakers, we try to know something about them, and of course, none of this came up.”

Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy said she picked Kilpatrick up at the airport, saw him at the breakfast and again at dinner, and he was alone each time.

“I think it’s very disappointing to have this happen,” she said. “His speech was a chance to energize the community around mentoring and tutoring our youth. The event was meant to focus on Dr. King’s legacy and now the focus is on this.”

The association holds the breakfast and a youth awards ceremony each January. Money from the breakfast pays for the association’s events and for scholarships to send youths on the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights Tour.

“We don’t make a whole lot of money once all our bills are paid,” she said. “We won’t pay for anything inappropriate.”
