You should be proud of how you are raising your son, and I never said a single parent couldn’t have a great child. And we actually AGREE on this, because it sounds as if you recognize that you didn’t have the best judgement in having children out-of-wedlock. No, I’m saying your son was a “mistake”. But am I wrong in thinking that you will teach him NOT to follow in your footsteps when it comes to the timing of having children? To me, a REAL woman or man can see where mistakes were made in their lives, and try to make the best of them and learn from them. Not defend and hold on to those mistakes. And even though you raised him well, other people see you, especially kids, and children live what they see. So you may have an effect on the community you live in because of your example (good AND bad), even though you don’t realize it.

I never meant to make you upset with my views. But I am a living witness that not all unwed births drag our community in the gutter. I am a woman who will admit when I’m wrong and have made a mistake but my children doesn’t fall into that category. The act that I did to conceive them, yes, was destructive behavior but only to me…not the community because I am taking responsibility for my actions.

My son asked me who I thought should be his role model to look up to in his sport endeavors (He plays it all). I explained to him what the difference is in a role model as an athlete and a role model as an individual. We have to teach our kids the difference so that when things happen, they won’t be so crushed and disappointed in the person they see as their role model because we are all human.

We as parents can’t allow the Halle Berry’s, the Omar Epps,etc. (or whoever) to be role models to our children to the point that they live and breath them. That’s are job…not actors, not athletes…it’s ours.

My son also asked me who was the best athlete in baseball because that’s who he wanted to be like. I told him the best player in any sport is the one who’s having the most fun because they have a love for the game itself and not a love to only win.

So you see, just because unwed mothers are unwed, doesn’t mean we don’t know how to raise responsible adults to make a difference in this world. Some of the best men and women are raised by single parents. When things in your life turn sour…add sugar. There’s always good in everything if you look for it.
