Iman: “Michelle Obama’s No Great Beauty, But She is Bright”

Iman made a rather peculiar comment about the First Lady to Parade the other day:
“Mrs. Obama is not a great beauty,” Iman tells Parade.com. “But she is so interesting looking and so bright. That will always take you farther.” Iman, who could easily pass for 40 with her glowing skin and gorgeous smile, thinks looks can be totally overrated. “When you’re a great beauty, it’s always downhill for you,” she explains. “If you’re someone like Mrs. Obama, you just get better with age.”
So, in Dr. Suess terms – “If you start off fine, you’re sure to decline.” All you ugg-a-muggs out there should be happy that you were born ugly. You can only go up from beneath the bridge you live under….says Iman.
Oh, and the First Lady is a great beauty…she’s great and she’s beautiful. Nuff said.

I’m surprised by this — Iman is one of my favorite models, but her comments are off the mark. “Interesting looking?” Did Linda Evangelista or Kristy Turlington remark on Hillary’s looks when she was FLOTUS?
And Michelle is beautiful — in every way. She has already built an image that spans national borders (refer back to the response she received in Europe a few months ago), and she emanates cl*****, intelligence, and grace. She is indeed a great beauty.

Michelle is not great beauty and to be honest she’s not attractive at all, the only reasons people even know she’s in the world first because of her husband, and second because she is a educated black woman who has her stuff together, if she didn’t have those qualities then people wouldn’t even pay her any attention, so I agree with Iman, Michelle is not Great Beauty.

I actually agree with Iman. Michelle Obama is not very attractive at all. In fact, she reminds me of Condeleeza Rice. She just said what most people are thinking but will not admit!! Iman has previously made an offhand comment before about black beauty. It was on the show Real Life Divas on BETJ and she mentioned how relieved she was that her daughter was born beautiful. Her first daughter was by a Black man…………..

First and foremost lets face it people, and don’t be all emotional about it but, Michelle is beautiful but is she MODEL MATERIAL no 9but then in the world of the Alek Weks… who knows). I personally don’t think the first lady is “dropped jaw,make you look twice” beautiful but she is elegant, charming AND intelligent all these things make her attractive in a way that goes BEYOND looks and I think that’s exactly what Iman was saying.
Iman has NO REASON at all to hate on Michelle, for obvious reasons, and most importantly because she maybe gorgeous to people in the west but in Somalia there are girls with those same distinctive features that most Somali women have and are a lot more good looking than she is.
She is beautiful yes but like she points out in what she said with people like her it DOES NOT go beyond beauty whereas Michelle who might not be strikingly beautiful but is beautiful non the less has a lot more going for her.

What is wrong with what Iman said? she is completly right! Michelle Obama is not a great beauty. if she was not the first lady would any of you call her a great beauty? She is smart cl*****y and very accomplished….. but that does not make her physically beautiful in the strict sense of the word. You know what’s sad? Despite the really rough start that Michelle received last year in the mainstream press, I’ve seen more and more public accolades for from outside the black community. Heck, Jack Cafferty of CNN — whom I never would have expected this from — wrote a whole column about Michelle and proclaimed he was “smitten” with her. Here, on a black site, the FLOTUS is torn down day after day. I don’t get it.
I’ve never seen anywhere where Michelle set out to be some gorgeous jet-setter who was going to set the world on fire. She just is. She has her goals and ambitions and a plan for what issues she wants to focus upon as FLOTUS, and, through it all, I’ve seen nothing from her but a deeply gracious humility. A few months ago, while in Europe, she visited a school for underprivileged girls — mostly black and other non-white races — and shared her personal struggle and her continued amazement at the position that she now fills. I saw the girls react with tears and jubilation to meet a woman they admired. Yes, to me, that’s true beauty. This woman has the power to inspire so many, to show little girls everywhere what they are capable of accomplishing, no matter their skin tone.
Bottom line, Iman should stick to critiquing other models before she puts her stiletto in her mouth again.
I love both Iman and Michelle and Iman is right, looks alone only go so far, but it is better to be intelligent, cl*****y, educated and poised because those last things last longer than looks.

Once when asked in an interview what she would have different in her life, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt said “I wish I had been born beautiful”. This from a lady who helped re-shape American domestic policy after WWI. Just about every domestic program in the US that we have now from housing to education was championed and/or established by her. And she felt she should have been pretty. That’s the importance we place on looks in this society, form over substance.
Michelle Obama has both form and substance, and so does Iman.

Part of what makes Michelle Obama beautiful is her comfort in her own skin and the ease with which she is able to connect to people, in general. I’m a little surprised about Iman’s comments but not disappointed, as I never had high expectations of her in the first place. Models, for the most part, are products of their environment that teaches them to value their looks first and all else (intelligence, character, etc.) last, which is unfortunate. My grandmother always told me, “pretty is as pretty does.”

There is nothing wrong with what Iman said, she was pretty honest in saying that Mrs.Obama is not cl*****icly beautiful or fits into the mainstream ideal of beauty but through her grace, inner beauty and brilliance she is truly BEAUTIFUL. I know women like that, who get looked over by society because they don’t fit the mold….btw an ideal type of beauty from white culture, that blacks are adopting way too much…see lil Kim lately? Iman wasnt born in a shanty. She was the privileged child of diplomats but the stuff about how she was sensationalised is true, as one of the very few black models at the time, it must have been a lonely cat walk. Which is why we all admired the path she took, starting up her own cosmetics line at the top of her game, the way she carved out a decent family life with a husband whose past did not exactly recommend him. She seemed sensible and cl*****y all things considered. The problem is her remarks about Michelle O were so not necessary, it is irrelevant what the FLOTUS actually looks like. It was obvious where the interviewer was going with the questions and Iman shd have known not to fall into any divide and rule the black man traps:the truth is if most people saw Michelle in the street, they would turn and look, she is very pretty and almost nonchalant about that beauty, she wears her height and size with grace, uses only enough makeup to enhance her looks (maybe a few Iman products too!)has lovely hair and a general air of health to her and who could blame her for appearing so carefree about the things that must consume someone like Iman (things she must wish she didnt have to bother about seeing that other tall, dark[er] skinned woman whom she must envy so much!) surrounded as she is by the love of a good (and handsome to boot!)man and the sweetest little girls, and you just know that Malia and Sasha are not growing up to only value their outer beauty. Michelle Obama may not be “conventionally” beautiful but she is beautiful in my eyes with her cl*****, grace, intellegence and truth. I personally also believe that Mrs. Obama is physically attractive as well. She’s tall, slender, healthy and weave free (something that many black women should aspire for) and I’m tired of the entertainment world feeding me images of what they think real beauty is.
Gisele Bundchen, Cameron Diaz and the extremely overrated Angelina Jolie are examples of “beautiful” people who I just don’t find that great looking. But because they’re white, they get elevated to perfection status (despite the fact that to me Gisele looks like a man/horse, Cameron isn’t really that pretty and Angelina looks like a cartoon).
I kind of understand what Iman was trying to say, but it came out as an head scratching, disrespectful, backhanded compliment. I believe that as a black woman, Iman should have tried to uplift Michelle instead of tear her down as many blacks like to do our own. I doubt that if Michelle was a light skinned, weave wearing black woman that Iman would have said the things she did.
Iman is lucky she is skinny and tall because if she wasn’t she would be still in Africa blocking traffic with her bucky forehead….you wanna see ugly look at your husband and his nasty teeth!

I understand what Iman was saying and I think she was being sincere about it. Just poor choice of words. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We all have our different ideas about beauty and just because the first lady is black doesn’t mean that all black people think she’s beautiful. I think Michelle Obama is gorgeous but my husband doesn’t think she is. That’s his opinion though.

Iman is entitled to her opinion. We don’t even know the whole context of the interview (they could have asked her specifically what she thought about Michelle’s looks). And when you look past the “no great beauty” part you can see that Iman gave Michelle a very big compliment.
I don’t find anything wrong with what Iman said. Michele is not a physically beautiful woman. She does, however, seem to be a beautiful human being on the inside and to top it off, is super intelligent. Not a lot of physically beautiful people can say that about themselves, or have that said about them.
