Yung Joc is talking to people about his money being jacked by some fake @ss Suge Knight in Atlanta. He’s also gettin’ into how Diddy and Bad Boy turned their backs on him when he needed them most. Flip the switch for more
Joc: I tried to work it out with Puff, I tried to work it out with Harve, I tried to work it out with Block. But they keep insisting that I sign this deal with Block. Then they tried to give me this deal, talkin’ bout, “Okay, we’ll account directly to you. We’ll give you half of your budget so you can go do what you need to do on your album.” That’s cool, but I’m not gonna sign to Block. So I said since y’all don’t want this to look f**ked up, I’ll let him keep his logo placement rights and I’ll allow y’all to continue to pay him his percentage, but I’m not signing to him. But they keep trying to coerce me to sign to him and I’m not f***in’ doing it. Some shiesty business is going on. I ain’t been paid no royalties. This is the first time in two years I’ve had label support, and it’s on a Day 26 record. That’s because they realized, “Damn, all these people making money with Joc. And he our artist, and we ain’t even seeing any of it.” When they flew me from wherever I was to Miami to shoot that video, that was the first time the label had spent any money on me in two years. Bad Boy, that is. Everything I’ve been doing, I been spending my own money. So I just recently set up my own office for my label, Swagg Team Entertainment. My own groups are being nominated now. This is the second group I’ve signed that’s been nominated for a BET Award. Hot Stylez was nominated for Laugh Out Loud Award, and became recipients. GS Boys, we did the video, smash single, millions of ringtones. Here it is, they’re nominated for Best Group. I’m not saying they gonna win, but God is so good, they been nominated. That lets you I’m working. So how is it that an artist came off of a flop second album – it sold over 300,000 units, but since it didn’t go Gold or Platinum, n***as consider that a flop – hasn’t really been off the charts since.

Joc: I been knew. I knew before Hustlenomics came out. That’s why with that whole project I wasn’t really even there, as far as doing everything I needed. My mind wasn’t there, man. Just so much bulls**t going on. My first album, I didn’t get but a $25,000 advance. My second album, I didn’t get no advance. My third album, he tried to give me another $25,000 advance. I couldn’t get Bad Boy to step up and make him do more. I ain’t f**ked with Block since December of ’07, so why would Bad Boy give him my full budget if they know I wasn’t recording with him. That’s money I gotta pay back, right.

Joc: How can it backfire? They owe me millions. They ain’t paid me royalties, man. How’s it gonna backfire? What, they gonna prolonged my album some more? I been waiting this long, I don’t give a fuck. That’s why Imma establish myself. Matter of fact, I’m in New York right now negotiating between three labels for a label deal for Swagg Team Entertainment. I’ll make money on the executive end. I’ve been quiet for a year and a half now. I ain’t said nothing! Trust me, every time I do an interview or go up to radio, people ask me what’s up with Block Entertainment. I been quiet about this s**t, I been trying to be politically correct. I’m not doing it no more.

Some people are so happy to get a record deal that they cant see the writing on the wall. That’s why its so imperative that you have a good lawyer to look over those contracts before u sign anything
Guaranteed all that stuff is IN his contract, but worded so deliberately deceptively, he could never figure it out even though it’s under his own nose. Puff does nothing unless it’s airtight and his ***** is covered. Did you see that complaint that other Bad Boy artists had where he was charging them for “featured artist appearances” in their video and it was HIM appearing in the videos himself? That was more than just Diddy wanting to be all in the video and all over the record…that was more than just ego; that was BUSINESS and that WAS IN the contract. Sadly these young artists who come up seem to always fall into this trap…when will they wake up and see that people go into Bad Boy and never come back out??

regardless of bad boy’s track record, what i just read above is about block.
if block has a contract with joc than bad boy has to abide by that, meaning not only can they not poach block’s artists they also must give the advance checks to block, who in turn will either give it to the managers and/or producers or their own in-house person, not the artist.
it would be block responsibility to pay mechanical rights to joc, provided he’s apart of a mech right society (used to be harry fox but they no longer deal with that).
as far as publishing rights, if joc signed away a certain amount of his pub rights than that’s his mistake, but that money goes directly to him if he signed a halfway decent contract.
the math in simple terms (split to avoid a wall of text)
an artist who writes gets 50% + 1/2 of the remaining 50% if in a typical pub contract (with a pub company) if there are 2, like producer and writer, they split 50/50, then the above kicks in that 50 = 100% they get 50% and 1/2 of the remaining. it’s not always 50% of 50% (25%) that the publisher takes. if no publisher or their own pub company than they obviously don’t have to split with a pub.
the next would be how much a manager gets and whether they get a bit of pub or simply a % of earnings.
the label may have the artist sign away some of their pub. the publishing company may get a larger percentage.
so the artist (the writer) may get 100% of their share (50%) and 50% of the shared publishing (of the remaining 50% of their share) they may have to also give up more of that shared leaving less of the pie (none of which would be taken from the producers 50% share).
this money is paid out via organizations such as ascap, bmi, sesac, socan, etc for a fee and sent to the parties specified in the registration (if one is ascap while the other is bmi, the respective p.r.o.’s will only pay the amount owed to the member of whichever p.r.o.).
in the u.s., only writers (the beatmaker, the songwriter) get performance rights which is why artists ask for part of the publishing and/or writing credit, same with traditional producers (the ones that oversee the project not make the music). in other countries, artist, and the musicians playing, get a reduced pay out for performance i.e. radio play, concert, public airing, etc. a bill is currently close to being signed that would also bring something similar for u.s. artists.
anylongwindedways, this all boils down to the contract signed by joc, block, and bad boy. if joc signed an effed up contract, like a 360 deal, and still hasn’t fulfilled his set time, and given up part of his publishing and hasn’t got his mechanical rights properly set than…well you know the rest.
if block and bad boy have a contract that everything goes through block, which is highly likely and typical in these types of deals usually to protect the smaller company from getting poached and dismissed despite all their efforts, than even if diddy wasn’t diddy, he couldn’t do ***** to help joc. it’s not their right or responsibility and possibly grounds for block to sue bad boy for any interference and/or breach of contract.
we should have known Diddy was *****ed up when he hit that exec with a liquor bottle or how he was in every artist’s video. He learned this ***** from other white and black powers in the music game and that is truly day.

YUNG JOC- You won’t like this, BUT:
Diddy will not be punished, because his paper is longer than Young Joc’s and not only that, before you form a joint venture with anyone, if you are a smart business person, you make that person/ entity sign off on a series of do*****ents that are designed to protect you, if you ever wind up in this situation. They are non-compete / non-disclosure- the other party can’t even TALK negatively about you. It’s in the contract…Then you have the arbitration clause, which means that they cannot sue you and if they do, it will be dismissed by a judge, because it’s in the contract, you had them sign BEFORE releasing any funds, performing any gigs, or advances…
The indemnity clauses are written that way for precisely that reason. If you are actually doing a joint- venture with someone, you need to express all your issues/ financial and otherwise, upfront.
I never understand people who wait until the deal is done, all papers signed, then you start getting large checks, then they want to re-do the contracts.
I can tell you how that usually goes over..It doesn’t..Then that’s when it turns into a negative PUBLIC squabble…
Diddy will come out of this unscathed, Yung Joc not so much..(Yung Joc should be careful, because you can go out of business trying to go after someone…Diddy has a team of lawyers, Yung Joc might have one. It depends on who signed who’s contract. I can guarantee, Yung Joc signed a contract with Diddy. Not the other way around…
With all that said, you don’t sign contracts where you are not the clear beneficiary…Then hope after you get on, you might be able to change things. That almost NEVER works, except in the movies…..

as far as signing with bad boy…
if you are a signed artist with a label and they sign a distribution contract or something else with another label, i.e. bad boy, and you don’t have a clause in the contract that can renegotiate the terms or give the option to leave or buy out the remaining term, than you’re officially a part of both labels, like it or not.
most will never get the upperhand in a contract, but with a good entertainment lawyer, they can minimize the damage, set for the future (’nuff artists got *****ed when new tech like cd’s came out, they got reduced rates and worse), add transparency and clarification, and include amendments and option clauses. the artist will still get molested but they won’t get butt raped like they would without a good entertainment lawyer.
with ***** like american idol, and the same old stories of artists jumping at ‘chances’ to get signed, it’s clear that people still haven’t learned to protect themselves and are asking the industry to bend them over.
it’s not rape if you consent, and not having an entertainment lawyer or an advocate like wendy day, means you’re asking for it.
Haven’t these *****s ever heard of this book called THE PLATINUM RAINBOW?

A friend of mine worked at a major record label and said that when the young black singers would come in, the record company executives would encourage them to sign contracts without reading them and that their parents would encourage the same out of greed. When you are a production company/music label such as Block Entertainment (“Young Joc, Boyz-n-Da Hood, Gorilla Zoe”) and you do a deal with an even bigger company such as Bad Boy it is the Production company (Block Entertainment) and its owner “Big Block” who work out the details of the deal with Puffy not “Young Joc”. So if “Young Joc” is mad at anyone he should be mad at “Block Ent.” If I run a multi-million dollar company and I do a deal with your boss then it is up to your boss to make sure you are straight because I have already given his ***** the money to make sure you are-and believe me Block got that money off of Young Joc and whoever else he has signed. However, the bottom line is if “I” the Production Company (“Block Ent”) have to pay for your Production, (beats and studio time, i.e. engineers, producers etc), Marketing and your Styling and a list of other promotional tools how much money do you think is left in the damn budget? You lucky that your ***** got $25,000 stacks on the advance. If you know the game you know the key to success is to build a name and make money for shows and appearances until you can recoup on the album sales and in this Bootleg ***** society we live in that is hard as hell nowadays!!!!!!!
