Halle Berry discusses her opinion on race relations in Hollyweird:

“I don’t think it should matter what the color of one’s skin is. I think it’s really important to me to be part of movies that reflect the modern society. In modern times we are mixing races and having families and loving each other. I’m of a mixed race family so it’s very normal for me.”

“Before me there was no me, and now there is me and I think there’s been other people of color – Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Fox, Will Smith – that show up at those award shows every year. So I’m hopeful that things are starting to change.”

Although some say that Halle’s acting game is not really “Oscar-worthy” you have to commend her breaking the mold, and still looking fly while extremely knocked-up.

2002, Best Actor in a Leading Role: Training Day (Winner)

Denzel won an Oscar well before Halle

Will smith had a successful career before Halle! Gord she is full of herself, its Black people like Sidney Potier that set the mark, Oprah and Dr King, so can she please back up. If it werent for them, I think life would be different for many of us!

Not beinf funny, but her role and image in Monsters ball is nothing to be proud of, stupid senseless film, with degrading sex scenes

  • Fulani

Janet and Halle do not look anywhere near 40 years old more like late 20′s or early 30′s. They are absolutely stunning.

The only thing I don’t understand about Halle is her constant need to remind people her mother is white. Seriously, it’s not a big deal. How come Faith Evans, Tamia, Alicia Keys etc don’t have a need to do that. SMH

  • J

Halle Berry is not a great actress and she didn’t break the mold for black actresses. I think Whoopi Goldberg’s performance in The Color Purple was the only time a black actress broke the mold. She should have won for that instead of Ghost. Halle is of mixed heritage, so she’ll pass for black according to Hollywood. Why hire a black woman, when they can hire Halle to appease both races? Halle Berry is full of it and she only claims being black when it’s convenient.

Mr. Lol, Lee Daniels produced the movie and he is black. He is the one who pushed to get the movie made in the first place.

  • Fulani

    @Chillin @ Work

I see your point, but Halle has been doing it for a # of years. BTW – are people trying to say the only time it’s ok to date a white man is if you have a white parent. Makes no sense. Halle was married to 2 brothas, it didn’t work out, so now she moved on.

She doesn’t need to use her white mother to justify being with a person, especially if he loves and respects her.

  • ripped

Okay, well maybe it don’t make it right for Halle to do the role, but a black man was exploiting her too. Its not always the white man doing the exploiting.

  • Van Gogh

There are so many actresses before and after who

are better at their craft. One can go as far back as

Ms Dandridge, Ms McDaniels to Sanaa Lathan. In my humble her best work was in the 1980′s. Her skills lies in the ability to sell herself. Personally I do not care who she sleeps with etc.I would not pay to see her modiocre acting. Good news , she is in middle age and hopefully we will see some new faces.

  • California Pixie

@Mr. Lol – Didn’t see Monsters Ball but I heard about the scene. So basically, she had to put it all out there to win the Oscar. Rather, sad.

The before me there was no me line…huh!!! I’m assuming she means black actors/actresses in Hollywood making it or in the limelight. I’m not feeling that statement at all and it’s hard to take it out context with the names she dropped.

On the always talking about being biracial…get over it…you’re black and Hollywood sees you as Black. She appears to be the only one hung up on that. Being in a mixed race family may be very normal for her but obviously she’s conflicted on some level because she keeps speaking about it.

Halle is beautiful, looks absolutely radiant pregnant and I wish her a healthy baby and much happiness. BUT…unfortunately her acting skills are not much to write or talk about.

  • Lady Shady

    she is beautiful!

  • EDDIE AND TRACEY MAKE ONE CUTE BLACK POWER COUPLE

There were many before Halle, and I do not mind her talking about being biracial, it is who she is. It is better than seeing a confused biracial person feeling disconnected with their world and their mix..you half black, half white, admit it and deal with it, be proud of it!

As for setting the scene, yes she did, Billy Bob got plenty of that! Sure that role spilt him and jolie up…sure that role caused Bennet to go out a cheat instead of looking like the complete fool every time someone came up to congratulate his wife in monsters ball!

  • http://eatingourwaythrula.blogspot.com/ AlwaysHungry

Wow, I doubt she’ll make it to March.

I don’t think the Monster Ball scene had much if anything to do with the Billy Bob/Jolie split

  • James

she recieved an oscar after screwing a ghetto white guy, yeah! great actress! what a joke! people! where are their morals?

  • anonymous

The only people that say that Halle’s acting isn’t up to par are black people. Coincedence? I think not. The woman has just about every acting award an actor can recieve…that is NOT by accident. So get over it. The only reason why some black folks have a problem with that sex scene is because it was with a white man. I have seen some black actors in more graphic sex scenes and no one has anything to say. Denzel had a sex scene with a white woman where he was hitting it from behind. Does anybody care? No. Kerry Washington has been in far more comprimising sex scenes then Halle, even lesbien scenes…does anybody care? No. Which only goes to show me that the reason why ignorant people are so up in arms about a sex scene that was done 7 yrs ago is because its “Halle Berry” and folks will hate regardless. People have sex scenes and nude scenes all the time, but as soon as that woman does ONE, she gets rediculed. How unfortounate. She didn’t get that Oscar for having a “sex scene”, she recieved that Oscar for potraying a down trodden black woman from the South, for playing a character that was so far from herself. Thats what acting is. Duh. I can’t help but to laugh at some black folks, you sit around and complain about how black actors don’t get good roles, but when they do play a meaty role…you’re still complaining. It makes absolutely no sense.

And when she said that before her there was noone, she was telling the truth…there was no black woman that actually won the Oscar for Best Actress before her. No other black woman has ever got paid as much as she does per film, she is probably one of the most decorated and celebrated actresses ever. So, while there are many greats that have paived the way (she always pays respect to the people that have come before her), like them, there is and will never be another her. Someone on here said she is always talking about her mother being white…well her mother is white, is she supposed to disown her mother simply because it will make some people feel better about themselves? Halle always says that she is a black woman and thats how people see her. Maybe she won’t forget about being mixed because some of you people won’t let her. All I here from some black people on these blogs is “Halle isn’t black…she’s mixed”. GTFOH!! I understand this is a blogsite, and therefor ignorance is and will always be, but some of you people need to focuse some of your negative energy towards the people that really are’nt doing a damn thing in that business and quit picking on the people that are at least trying to represent blacks in a positive light. That woman don’t give people any reason not to like her, some of you just hate just to be hating because you are mad about your position in life. What that woman does in her personal life is noones business, and if you are worried that much about that then you really need to get a life, because she’s living hers wether you like it or not.

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ Anonymous

That’s not true. Go to Ain’t-it-cool news. They hate on Halle with a vengeance that’ll make most of you blush. Movie geeks are by far the most creative when it comes to hating.

  • la trollope

    WHERE’S GABRIEL??

  • FyreStarrter

@Anonymous, I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said. I loved Halle’s acting in Monsters Ball & all the accolades she received where indeed well deserved. She acted her a$$ off in that movie & I really think if Billy Bob had’ve been a brotha there wouldn’t be 75% of the anger for choosing to do that role that Halle has received from the Black Community. Also I just think that most people in the Black Community did not understand the premise or purpose behind Monster’s Ball & therefore that makes it a bad film for Halle to have done. Try to think a little bit people, STOP letting the world of Hip Hop dictate when, how & WHAT you think!!! Halle is a Hollyweird Phenom that is respected in ALL circles (EXCEPT THE BLACK COMMUNITY ironically enough) & beloved around the world for her talent, her spirit, & her humanity. Something sadly enough most black people cannot get with or even try to understand.

As far as Halle & Gabriel are concerned they are VERY MUCH still together but right now they live in different cities & I am thinking that works well for them. They seem to be managing just fine without all the Hollyweird hype & drama!!!

lol ok who made the statement about Halle having plenty of time to have a baby…HELLO SHE IS IN HER 40′s there’s NOT alot of time after that. She met & feel in love with Gabriel & you really cannot help whom you fall in love with & that fact that she was married to cheating & abusing David Justice & then cheating sex addicted (sorry he is not he ONLY brotha who is sex addicted check the brothas in your own communities!!) & decided NOT to have a child with either one of them says ALOT about the convictions, resolve, & pride of Halle. I love her for that & will ALWAYS support her.

  • FyreStarrter

OH & I MUST have those shoe boots & that jacket, they are on point for REAL!!!! lol

  • nahnah

    dc

wonder if Halle subconsiciously wanted a near white baby she had years to have a baby and has one with a white man, iam just sayin…

    ____________________

There’s a possibility this could be true, since she admitted to wanting to be white when she was young. I guess half white ain’t enough for her…

  • nahnah

    And…

Monster’s ball was extremely disturbing, and her acting was sub par. She basically played herself: the weak and helpless chick who finds comfort in men.

The Oscars used to be about superb acting and admirable roles, and there’s nothing admirable ’bout a weak black woman who sought comfort, by way of sex, from a racist hick responsible for killing your husband.

The whole movie was dirty, nasty, sickening, and utterly strange. UGH.

  • FyreStarrter

Ironically enough the movies that the Oscars most recognise are generally “dirty, nasty, sickening, and utterly strange.” to the masses so I would say mission accomplished.

Real films are not all about happy endings at the end of the day. & they also contain in your face subject matter to make you THINK. You saw dirty, nasty, sickening (I’m curious to know what about sex do you find sickening or was is something about THIS scene in particular?_ I saw humanism, love, & ultimate forgiveness. The characters that Halle & Billy Bob ultimately who prior to the events that brought them together might have been enemies, instead that very same chain of events (the similarities are indeed UNCANNY she lose her son & so did Billy Bob-hmm how humanising of the screenwriter) BROUGHT them together & united them in a way that only sheer tragedy utter devastation could.

Again I ask (or maybe you should ask YOURSELVES), REALLY what was “dirty, nasty, sickening, and utterly strange” about that? Or are most of us so racist (don’t forget yourself, I may be of mixed heritage but I most certainly am black & proud to my VERY SOUL), so close minded, & so angry at what we perceive that the white man has done to us (instead of looking at what we have done to ourselves in recent history) that we cannot see the humanism at the height of this story?

As much as I love Angela Bassett, I truly do not believe she is capable of pulling such a role off. She simply CANNOT identify with the CORE SYMBOLISM of this story. Indeed I feel that Halle who is of mixed heritage (at the ULTIMATE cusp of forgiveness) was BORN to play such a role.

OH & there’s a very simplistic reason why she currently appears primarily opposite White Male Actors these days. Just LOOK at the venom that is spewed from the Black Community in her direction after her OSCAR WINNING performance in Monster’s Ball? Would YOU want to work with people who hate you for being the person you are at YOUR very core?

  • Don’t mind me

I have to say america is very racist. Even hatred spreads within shades of the same race. It’s madness and unnecessary considering everyone is sharing the same space. I was raised to not see colour but to see mentalities. She looks gorgeous love her jacket.

  • John

Shes going to pop any day now!!!

  • FyreStarrter

@Don’t mind me, I agree with you, the hate is MUCh more prevalent in shades of the same race than ANYTHING else. The amount of venom we spew towards each other sickens me (now THAT is sickening)!! If we took HALF as much energy that we use to HATE each other & turned that towards the betterment of our people & mankind in general we’d be 100 times better off. SMDH

  • C.C.

Oh, Halle. Honey, Blacks and Whites have been sleeping together since it was a world. That didn’t bring equality. Hell, after the American Civil War, it was estimated that 65% of former slaves had direct (usually on the paternal side) White ancestry. That didn’t bring equality eithier. My point is that race mixing is not “modern”. The only modern aspect of it is that in todays society the Black parent may be the father, where historically the White parent was usually the father. Trust me honey, I am a eighth generation southerner on both sides and I know (first hand) what I am talking about. And make no mistake, I think Black people have a looooooong way to go in terms of self love, but Blacks in Hollywood experience racism, for the same reason all Blacks do. Being Black, be it whole or mixed. Ask yourself if Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Jessica Lange, or Charlize Theron had to degrade themselves by exposing themselves and feeding into one of the worst, and pervasive stereotypes about the women of their race, to win an Oscar. No they did not, but you did. Losing Isiah is the best movie you have ever made, yet you got an Oscar for essentially playing a confused, hypersexed, poverty stricken, idiot (yes because any sister who would fool with a broke a** racist is an idiot) in Monster’s ball. Oh, Halle.

  • Chris

Funny thing is, no matter what race mixes with the black race, that child is and will always be BLACK.

In one post, Halle is a beautiful woman, in other posts she is a confused mixed nut. You either like the woman or you don’t. I would agree with tmas that she did say those things; I also agree that people change. I also believe that Halle, along with many other blacks, has no real idea of her culture and who she is. If she did, she would not have fueled the stereotypes she portrayed in Monster’s Ball. Hopefully, she will try to understand her ancestrial past for the sake of her child.

Martin Luther King and all that loving each other would have been great but it did not happen, can not happen, until blacks as a whole begin to truly heal from the negative effects of the past…

  • Reformed GammaRay

Awww! she does have a glow about her..but why do I feel sad for her?

  • Duane Hannah

This is truly hilarious. Black guys have been knocking-up, white women and refusing to step up, and do their part to raise the children for years. “brothas got to get that s**t, right?” Now, the most beautiful, and talented black actress in Hollywood has been tattooed for life by the BWC, and he’s manning-up, and doing the right thing by her,and ya’ll all up in arms! Calling him K-Fraud..please. He’s a successful model. Before you say a word about that not being a legitimate profession, I have to warn you, that I’ll be forced to bring up names such as Naomi Campbell, and Tyra Banks, etc..”Boo-Hoo…Halle should have had a baby with a black man” LMFAO!!! I knew Halle Berry having a white mans baby was going to put a bad taste in your mouth, but I had no idea it was going to break your itty-bitty-widdle hearts…Oh HELL, this is too funny…lol..

  • absolutsugar

Lots of comments on Halle winning her Oscar for Monster’s Ball and what that representation was for African-Americans/Blacks. Nothing on Denzel and Training Day. He should have won for Hurricane. Perhaps they won for realistically portraying a character clearing far from their true selves. It is called acting after all. Having stated that, I don’t know what in the name of all that is black history she means when she says “before me there was no me”.

  • FyreStarrter

@Duane Hannah, yeah I seriously had to laugh when I read some of the venom spewed at her because she is having a child with Gabriel instead of a Black man. OMG the hate, the anger, the venom could sink an aircraft carrier!!!

@Absolutsufar, that is a good point that perhaps they one for playing characters that are quite far from their true selves. That would especially be the case of Denzel. Halle, eh, not so sure (don’t think she’s s sexual animal as some people have tried to portray her here today) but I am more so referring to the race mixing in the movie.

    @ FyreStarrter:

    I have a few questions for you…

    1. Why did Hank (I think that was his name) hate his son?

    2. Why was Leticia’s husband (Puffy) executed?

    3. What was Sonny (Heath Ledger) so depressed?

    4. How did Leticia get such bad luck in such a short amount of time? (Her husband was executed, her son died, she lost her job, she got evicted…)

    5. Why did Hank (wasn’t that his name) name his business after her so fast?

    6. What was it that made Hank change his degrading, racist views?

    7. Was her son even buried?

    8. Where was her other family members?

    9. Why weren’t her family members mentioned?

  • FyreStarrter (Live & in FULL Living Colour!!!)

@trying to sensor me..(oh as if THiS IS A STRETCH) but anyway, nothing desperate about what I said. Its obvious your hatred of Halle knows no bounds & after you last post I get the feeling that no matter what she did she would be an object of your venom so don’t sweat that. She is who she is & you are who you are etc…

I figured these questions were rather easy so I have no problem answering them.

    1. Why did Hank (I think that was his name) hate his son?

He hated his Son because he felt his Son had failed to live up to the expectations that he had for him, in other words he felt like his son was a LOSER, this was however a DIRECT connection to his not only racist Father but also his verbally abusive Father as well. The man spewed his venom at EVERYONE no matter whom or what colour they were.

    2. Why was Leticia’s husband (Puffy) executed?

I believe he was executed for murder (why is this even up for debate, the man atoned for his sins & even asked for forgiveness from Leticia for what he had put her & his Son through)

    3. What was Sonny (Heath Ledger) so depressed?

he was depressed because he felt that his Father did not love him & that he had failed to live up to his Fathers expectations. His Father learned the abuse cycle from Sonny’s abusive Grandfather & because he was raised in that environment he didn’t know how to BREAK that cycle until the right events transpired & the right individuals crossed his path.

    4. How did Leticia get such bad luck in such a short amount of time? (Her husband was executed, her son died, she lost her job, she got evicted…)

Luv that’s easy when it f*cking rains it f*cking pours-this happens in real life as well or don’t you know anything about that?

    5. Why did Hank (wasn’t that his name) name his business after her so fast?

I am guessing the reason you asked this question is because you know nothing about love or adoration or sacrifice or honour or respect or forgiveness so moving on….

    6. What was it that made Hank change his degrading, racist views?

Hank was only racist because of the environment that he grew up in & the negativity that he heard coming from his Father (who in turned had learned his from his Father or environment). Children are not BORN racist luv, we make them that way.

    7. Was her son even buried?

Seeing as how Letiicia was indigent the state would have paid for her Son’s cremation it happens ALL the time, it’s called a Pauper’s Homegoing where I used to live at in the South.

    8. Where was her other family members?

Hmmm now as far as we know this woman had been abandoned by her family & those around her. When she was being evicted people were actually standing out on the street corner watching instead of trying to help the woman salvage what little was left of her lift & trying to find her a place for to go. This happens everyday in the black community so WHY is this news again?

    9. Why weren’t her family members mentioned?

Because they had abandoned her as we tend to do in the black community. It used to be we banded together to help each other out in our time of need you know things like rent parties etc….But we don’t those things now because we are SELFISH & we are even raising our children to be SELFISH.

Oh I’m sorry, what about the statements I made was degrading to black women again?

  • nahnah

  • can i sister post…

  • can i sistah post…damn!

Anyway…Are you able to express your opinions without claiming I harbor “hatred” for Halle Berry? Seriously, I don’t know the woman personally, and can only express my opinions based on what she presents to the world as an “artist”, and that’s what I’m doing. NEWSFLASH: It is quite alright to dislike the work and pesona of a person, even Ms. Halle Berry. And that’s something you’re just going to have to accept. Moreover, she’s as human as everybody else, despite the fact that Hollywood rams her down our throats…

I am fans of many famous people, but I’m not going to get all defensive and out of control at those who don’t like who I like.

Oh, and the he black community tend to ‘abandon’ family? Ok, it’s true that single parenthood is mighty common in the black community, but complete abandonment? C’mon! I think you might be suffering from some personal issues…I suggest you deal with them.

  • soy latte…

  • nahnah

my response to you was deleted AGAIN…

    I effin’ give up.

  • Please

Fulani – maybe she is always reminding you that her mother is white because you keep reminding everyone she is black. She is proud of both her heritages, whereas you only stick to one subject. She honors both her black african america roots as well as her white roots. I am mixed as well, and love it! I am proud of both, and speak of it. Why put her down because of it. It’s not all about black people darlin’, it’s about what and who you are without any color lines.

  • Good grief

nahnah – get over yourself and quit living in the past – it’s a free country – I love that people, unlike yourself, can live in a country where they can make choices where to live, whom to marry, and not get stuck in a box as yourself, and see no color lines, are strong enough to see whom they want, make babies with whom they want, marry whom they want to. Being narrow minded and living the past keeps you stuck in your present, and do not allow oneself to experience the true joys of life, but only allow themselves to experience the trajedies of life in the past and now.

  • nah nah

Actually, she and Hollywood classified her as black. :-)

She also said she wanted to be white when she was younger, because she felt all of her problems would ‘go away’. So there’s a possibly that Halle might be ‘confused’ as is a lot of people who are products of inter-ethnic breeding.

  • nah nah

    @ Good grief:

    You silly rabbit…

Are you a schizo or something? LOL, who here is talking about marriage and babies? We’re discussing a movie….Stop smoking that crack and snap back into reality.

poor nah-nah – that’s what she does when she is having a hard day – picks up the pipe to smoke a little crack. it’s okay baby, it’ll be alright.

I’ll put it to ya’ll straight. All through college I had a relationship with a White man. Oh everyone said, “well she’s different”, “well she’s pretty”, like that made me acceptable. Well, after graduation I hit that cold, cruel world and found out that i was just a another yellow n***er. White heritage, white boyfriend, it didn’t stop a thing. I’ve been horibly discriminated against, and even lost a couple of jobs for dating white men, because once my bosses who were all white women saw me having lunch or being picked up by these guys, they fired me. And I graduated at the top of my class, was never late, and pursuing a PhD. What Black folks have got to learn is that in America, it doesn’t matter what your bloodline is mixed with, what college you graduate from, who you sleep with, what neighborhood you live in, or what political party you support, or what you do for a living, Black is Black and for most White people that is a problem. Now Halle’s last movie (Things We Lost in the Fire) flopped, and she’s going to keep having flops until she and dude break up. Then, (now remember somebody told ya’ll this) when dude get a little more famous, starts making a little more money, he is going to eithier (a)do something to disgrace himself and their relationship, (b)use her (I suspect this is happening already) (c)leave her after he’s pimped her for all he can get. Being with Black people is hard for White people, and they only do it when they have i.e. want to date a person more physically attractive than what they get in their own race, need help, want to feel “better” than somebody because their own treats them like sh**t, etc..And to those who say, well, what about love. I can’t say that love between the races can’t happen, but I can tell from years of experience, that that love will be invaded by racism, and the moment the Black person asserts themselves, it going to be some sh**t.

C.C. – interesting point of view and your experiences in life. I disagree to a point. I have close friendly members who have inter-racial marriages that have lasted (and continue so)for close to forty years. Perhaps it depended on the strength of who they are and not the color of their skin. Too much emphasis is being placed on the race of the person, and in my opinion the ones who do the most squawking about race are the “black people” and “white people”. We are people who should be governed by how we feel, what we think and not by what color my skin is. It’s a shame that this is what it has come down too. Being hired, having friends, getting married, being successful, and the like should be according to what I have intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, and the like and not because I am black or Hispanic, etc. It is society who has made distinctions, we are all responsible for this and not just one group, although as I stated above, there is more of a responsibility of whom squawks the loudest, with no real success. Most people turn a deaf ear to this.

Halle- She’s a woman, daughter, (previous wife), and partner, a career woman, and soon to be more…We applaud her for her work…

Let us not forget…Oscar was first called Academy Award…Also there is a STAMP for Ms. Hattie

    FACT-…

First Oscar: Hattie McDaniel, 1940, supporting actress, Gone with the Wind.

Oscar, Best Actor/Actress: Sidney Poitier, 1963, Lilies of the Field; Halle Berry, 2001, Monster’s Ball.

Oscar, Best Actress Nominee: Dorothy Dandridge, 1954, Carmen Jones.

All of her other film roles aside however, it was Hattie’s Oscar-winning performance as Mammy in David O. Selznick’s legendary Civil War epic GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) that made her career and guaranteed her place in movie history. Her ability to project moral authority over her white charges with endearing comedic sass, as well as near-maternal concern and heartbreak, earned her an Academy Award as the year’s Best Supporting Actress, and at the 12th Annual Academy Awards ceremony at the Coconut Grove on January 29, 1940, Hattie became not only the first black performer to win an Academy Award, but also the first to attend an Academy Awards banquet. Her success in GONE WITH THE WIND immediately established Hattie as Hollywood’s foremost black actress, a position in which she enjoyed enormous critical plaudits as well as intense scrutiny and criticism from members of the black press.
