Bill Cosby is coming out with a Hip Hop album called State of Emergency. The album will cover issues such as teen pregnancy, crime, drug abuse in parenting. Here is an excerpt on parenting from one of Bill’s books that was published last year:

“All black parents can do right by their children, and all black children can succeed. There is no reason why not.”

“Use standard English when you have your kids together, not Black English. They’ll hear enough of that in the streets…Watch the movie My Fair Lady. All cultures discriminate against people who have not mastered the standard language, and when race is involved, it is all that much harder for a nonstandard speaker to feel competent or even at home in the culture.”

We’re interested to hear what Bill has to say on this album, and even more who he has producing these tracks. Click here and here for more quotes from MC Cosby.

Why are we so offended when he addresses how we communicate or a lack thereof? We as a minority DO act in a way that is very degrading to OURSELVES!!! He is trying to open our eyes to how WE set our ownselfs out of the race. No life if not a competitition but, there is a distinct line drawn in the sand when WE are in the line of anglosaxons, middleeasterns etc. Let’s talk sterotypes; answer them for yourself…What are the asians known for? What are the indians known for? What are the hispanics known for? What are the anglosaxons known for? Now, is there a limit on what what the anglosaxons are known for? Come on people — as “Dap” said/yelled at the end of Spike Lee’s School Daze in 1988….”WAKE UP”!!!!!

    Luv

he’s not rapping. he has a group that is going to rap. he’s the executive producer.

  • WeNeedToHelpOurselves

I don’t know about the My Fair Lady part, but speaking correct English, which means you can communicate with other people & it will show a sign of intelligence regardless of how much education you have. We as Black people need to help ourselves, Bush can’t do it, the Government can’t do it. Hurricane Katrina should have been a wake up call for all Blacks that are doing self destructed & foolish stuff. But, unfortunately, New Orleans black on black murder rate has sky rocketed. Something is wrong somewhere. Black uneducated, unmarried girls should NOT have children. This is the deterioation of the black family & unless we stop this the murder, uneducated, criminal mentality will continue & we will be a doom race in society. You need to have a life before you make a life. I am Black, not Bill Cosby, but I understand his frustration with our people. We as a people have too much hate & disrespect for each other….and we complain about the treatment we get from other races. PLEASE

  • Nwachukwu

I HAVE to listen to this album. Please, somebody leak this album…

  • Black Beauty

I can’t believe you all are dissing Bill for wanting to feed the community with something positive. Shame on him for wanting more for, and from the kids, and people in general, today.

  • Cheron

Bill just needs to reiterate what he means when he says that black people need to speak proper english. He is directing it to the ignorant, non-educated black people. Many of you have confirmed that he does have a point through this blog alone. Only people that are not well educated or well traveled will label one race as the same. I am an educated black woman that is saddened by “hoodrats” and “thugs”….It’s 2008, are you going to remain a stereo-type for the rest of your lives?

  • Dick Chestnut

Word on the streets is that Mortimer, the self writing pen from Picture pages, ghost wrote the whole album and Cosby didnt pay him one cent. He has a dis video on youtube explaining the whole thing. He even alleges that he was used by Cosby in a manner that pens should not be used, Chris Stokes style.

  • da darkness

    deez cats pitiful

  • So What

There are too many of us reinforcing old and tired stereotypes. What’s wrong with being able to speak standard English in the right situation (interviews, etc)and “Black english” when it’s the right thing?

If it’s going to help some people, go ahead Mr. Cosby.

  • nahnah

Look, I’m all for constructive criticism, but pretending as if the ‘plight of black people’ is self-inflicted is what I won’t stand for.

Sure, we have to fix our own communities, but that also includes fighting to make the system work in our favor as well.

Bill Cosby and his white brothers and sisters will do anything and everything in their power to convince black people that racism is a figment of the negro imagination.

So, are blacks to blame for the racist justic system too?

How ’bout the fact that black people are prosecuted under the so-called drug laws a hundred times worst than whites?

Are blacks to blame for the death of his son as well?

  • Golden Shoes

Bill Cosby has some valid points. It is a shame when the dominant black culture choses to value being cool and ignorant over higher standards and higher education.

How many of you all know someone under the age of 30 with at least 3 kids, 3 baby daddies or 3 baby mamas with no college degree! Bet those 3 kids can sing every song that comes on BET and do every dance but can not read, add, divide or multiple! How many of you all have seen the little girls with perms or weaved in hair and the little boys with earrings in their ears and jordans on their feet? But the kid can’t spell their own first names or know their telephone numbers!

  • Golden Shoes

    @Nah Nah

Bill is saying the black Community needs to stop expecting the white community for help and address our issues within our own community.

So all the blacks who know the justice system is crooked can stop being persecuted by:

staying legal and becoming lawyers, then judges to work within that sytem to change things!!!!!!!

Black people know welfare is designed as a trap but so many young people go out and have babies they can not afford!

Black people know that rappers get rich and move out the hood but they still keep buying the cd’s of folks who call them B’s and N’s!

Black people know that obesity is a killer but they are still eating at Popeyes and claiming Thick Missus are the best!

  • NY2CaliLvn

everyone all ready knows Bill Cosby’s stance on the issue I take a quote from Kanye Bill Cosby “does not like Black People”

  • NY2CaliLvn

    he likes astute African American’s

  • NY2CaliLvn

Is that a cataract in his right eye

  • Cheron

“JUST LISTEN TO ALL OF YOU DUMB BLACK PEOPLE! STILL DON’T GET THE POINT! YOU WON’T EVER LEARN BECAUSE YOU ARE TO IGNORANT TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HE IS EVEN TALKING ABOUT! BLACK PEOPLE FACE IT OBAMA IS NOT WINNING NONE OF YOU EVER WILL! DUMB CUNTS!”

LOL….IT’S TOO IGNORANT!…..LEARN HOW TO SPELL…YOU HAVE JUST BEEN CORRECTED BY A BLACK WOMAN!

  • nahnah

    Golden Shoes:

Are you saying that black people should just not fight the racist criminal system, and just solve the issue by not committing crimes?

Anyway, I have listened to Bill Cosby, and he is indeed dismissing the power of racism – which is a direct cause of the “black plight”…

Now, my thing we have a lot of problems in our communities, so we need to do something about it. True, we can’t expect others to fix our problems, because we have the power to fix them ourselves…

But how do we work on the better if we refuse to acknowledge our enemies?

The fact is, no matter where you go in the world, regardless who the occupants are, every poverty stricken environment will be plagued with people who suffer from from a lack of education, broken familial structure, self-hatred, crime, and a bunch of other social ills. So, that’s the nature of the best…

Yes, some of our issues are self-inflicted, but hose have their root causes as well…In other words, until we will continue to suffer until we dare tackle the root cause of it all…

  • nahnah

    * So, that’s the nature of the beast

Ahh, a bunch of mispeleld wors and typos…

Have to go back to work!

  • Jessica-keeping it real

I just finished reading his latest book and it just blew me away. I think that he discusses a lot of things that we as a people are just not ready to hear but need to hear. The reason he is coming down hard on us is that he wants to see us do better because he knows we can. I think he realizes that hip-hop is a big part of our community and a lot of kids today are being raised on hip-hop. He is not a stupid man. He’s doing this so that the young people will listen. I think instead of criticizing and jumping to conclusions we need to take a minute and hear what he has to say. I have never been offended by anything he has said because it doesn’t pertain to me. Everyone should ask himself or herself why am I getting upset?

  • Cheron

what is the name of his latest book?

  • TJ

I think a lot of criticism is misguided. What does language have to do with discrimination. Discrimination is wrong period. He somewhat justifies racism in most of his critique of white America.

However he is correct in putting up a mirror to black America I’m afraid he may be too removed from the culture to produce a reflection that doesn’t have a strong glare.

  • ThatTouchOfPink

Looks like like Glaucoma to me :(

  • MiaChan

At least someone is doing something positive…

  • da darkness

ain’t nothing positive about a brotha that’s lost a son and nobodies been prosecuted especially with all the bread he gives. he’s got a def ear from my city neva seen a cosby sho that brought the hood into the brooklyn brown stone, he lost his way

much love for mr.cosby and for everything he is doing and trying to do for our people. we need more brothers like him. he has real love for us. unlike many of our people who only degrade our there on kind. he has a video he made back in the day called “lost, stolen or strayed”.

  • dahveed

how is bill cosby a koon? what has he done negative for his people. i bet your one of those brothers boasting that bill “master” clinton is the first black president. I bet you also listen to hip hop artist that sounds like they were produced by the klan. your lost bro!

  • http://text-support.com Scooby Dubious

Who gets to rule on what’s authentically black, anyway? Jesse Jackson? Bill Cosby? Skip Gates? Sean Combs? Middle-class professionals or pugnacious street punks? We’ve been fretting about deracination for a very long time. It’s a curious thing that being a black American obliges you to show your racial bona fides with every step forward. Why? Why does a Barack Obama have to respond to our anxieties about authentic negritude? What exactly is our claim on him? He has no bloodline to black America, neither on his mother’s nor his father’s side. How did he get to be “ours” to fret with our nervous itch about blackness? I’m starting to think only the anxiety is authentic. Everything else about negritude is a social fiction thrown together in a hurry, meant to forgive character failings that would embarrass us if blackness itself hadn’t been made embarrassing.

  • tana

sit down I am so tired of this man. RETIRE for real and be quiet! I am so sick of him and why he thinks Black Folks are awful!

  • Blaqk…boycott the Bejing Olympics

I am not going to let the Chinese get away with this sh*t after we have been supporting the various Take-outs in every Hood

    ******Boycott the Bejing Olympics********

They can’t get away with supplying the Sudans with money to continue the genocide in Dafaur

As for the Topic…he is right hate to say it cause he is always dissing us in MIXED COMPANY. Do you hear some of our youth speak these days…O my what a tragedy…Ladies we judge our men by the things they say its the same thing, everybody does it. And not being able to communicate properly means that more than likely whatever you needed or were reffering to will be dismissed.

  • Little Wing

Anyone criticizing Bill is a moron who seeks and embraces negativity.

  • yes

whats wrong with his eye? eww

  • Nita

If this was entitled ‘Ho Sit Down’, would this thread have garned over 1000 posts?

I have no opinion on Bill Cosby. He’s right about many things. He’s wrong to lay it primarily at the feet of black women alone. He’s absolutely right on the current state of the black church.

  • BKChick

Dayummm…this also should be under the “HO SIT UR AZZ DOWN, WERE ARE TIRED OF YOUR TIRED AZZ, SIT DOWN FOR ONCE AND FOR ALL” Subtitles….I am so tired of his ol’ crust brown Jello Do-do azz! STFU BILL!

Bill Cosby is right. Change starts at home. He may be an imperfect role model, but he is absolutley right.

He’s not doing this for ratings. He’s become less popular but has said he will keep keeping on anyway.

At least he will leave behind some food for thought and change. Which is more than I can say for most elders these days.
