Movie News: Will Smith to Star in Katrina Film

Another Katrina story will soon be brought to life via the biggest movie star in the friggin world:
Will Smith’s production company has partnered with Sony Pictures Entertainment to bring to life the story of one of the many heroes of the Hurricane Katrina aftermath, the two companies announced Wednesday.
Overbrook Entertainment and Sony have earned the film rights to the story of former Marine John Keller, who rescued nearly 244 of his neighbors in New Orleans in the days that followed one of the largest natural disaster on American soil to date.
Keller, who was nicknamed “The Can Man” by the media, orchestrated the rescue of his elderly neighbors from their apartment building, the American Can Company in New Orleans’ Mid City neighborhood.
Following the levee breach that flooded the city and added to the damage already caused by Hurricane winds, American Can sat in over 11 feet of water.
Keller single-handedly kept his neighbors calm and controlled while helping them exit the building.
While the announcement from Overbrook and Sony did not specify a production start date or casting, The Times-Picayune reports that Overbrook executive Jeff Sommerville has confirmed that Smith is likely to portray the 6′7″ Keller himself.
“When I came back after Katrina and talked to the old people I had saved, they all said God was going to bless me, I’m going to receive my blessing” Keller told the Times-Picayune. “Well, I guess this is it. “I wasn’t in it for the money,” he added. “But I was able to affect so many people. It wasn’t just the people I got out of the building but everybody who valued those people too.”
The film will be written and directed by John Lee Hancock, the writer behind the 1997 blockbuster Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

They cancelled “the game” because they didnt portray black people as ignorant enough for the dumb m*****es of black people who actually watch the most television (the deep south), plus it was written by liberal jews who didnt feel right throwing in more streotypical chittlin’ and watermelon storylines.

Those Emmitt tyler Perry coonfest’s are still on because the south can relate to n*ggas dancing, crackin’ unfunny jokes and coonin’ up a screen for dollars, you were right not to watch either of those shows, afterward you woulda felt stupid and probably went out and committed a crime and not know the reason why…….I cringe whenever those commercials for that Emmitt tyler Perrry sh*t comes on during the playoffs.

I’m from a “deep south” town called Griffin Georgia and it saddens me when I read some of the things that have unfortunately become preconceived notions about our perception of ourselves and mainstream America. Truth be told, there are some pretty lame (and some pretty rough) characters down this way but at the same time, believe it or not, there is a thriving intellectual base as well. Dont get me wrong, I’m not here to condone or condemn. I just dont like when I hear blanket terms like “*****s from the deep south”. Remember, many of us and our children attended some of the most reknowned African American colleges that this racist and sometimes very reprobate country of ours has to offer. Dont be so quick to point the finger and judge those whom you dont know. Remember, we’re all still *****s to a lot of white s, regardless of how well spoken we are or what channels we watch in our free time. Its ok to sound off as long as you are truly honorable and show humility in the face of others. Your reputation is not your perception of yourself, but rather what they say about you when you are absent from your circle of friends.

To have lived and witnessed the Katrina Hurricane would be my only way of knowing the story of the aftermath. I lived in the hardest hit area, which were the ninth ward, I witnessed my home taken by nearly 22 ft. of water, not to mention the continuous flow of bodies, both young and old floating in the oiled filled murky waters. Rescue were the last thing the people of Katrina expected, because we were the city that were forgotten. Drinking water were obsolete to the survivors. We never witnessed Red Cross or anyone dropping water down in baskets, it were get it how you live it. I can only say that this movie will only add to the mental stress that the Hurricane has caused so many people. You can not portray something you haven’t lived. It will only bring pain to those who lost their loved ones during that time.

1. I am from New Orleans and I think this movie is a good look. So many people don’t really “get it” so I can only hope that it is done in the proper and honest manner. Hopefully, New Orleans and the rest of the country and learn from and move past Hurricane Katrina and rebuild. That being said….

Mrs. Deedy (if what you say is true that they plan on giving money back to New Orleans for childrens playground/recreation), I am quite sure those kids don’t mind where the money is coming from, usually kids just like to have fun and play. I think that Will Smith was a great choice, he has a large crossover appeal and hopefully this movie will help more ppl understand the true depth of cir*****stances ppl were placed in. Maybe it will lead more ppl & businessess to get involved in the still ongoing rebuilding.
@nevrquit It was very condescending for you to say “You can not portray something you haven’t lived.” You’re absolutely right to a point. Many others including I didn’t experience it, in fact I’m sure many watched the tragedy from the security and safety of our own residences. BUT, I think we are intelligent enough to know that the sh*t was effed up!! And how frightening and devastating, the situation/cir*****stance was for those who were in the midst of it. Knowing that no human, further more, no American citizen should have ever been treated in such manner, but we can only try to understand, but you’re right, no, we will never know its full impact on you then nor today.

I don’t think anyone will ever “get it”. To wake up the way we did that morning….Thats something you have to experience to get…BUT…considering he’s a great actor, he’ll be able to at least act like he gets it. Im sure once he finishes the study of the role he will have a real good understanding. And then he’ll be able to bring forth a great character and story.
