ElectrikRed

Bossip recently caught up with new girl group Electrik Red to discuss their new album and why the Dream thinks that “these b*tches are crazy!”

Bossip: If any one of you were to get caught up in some crazy story (that would surely end up on Bossip), which one of you would it be?
Electrik Red: Every single one of these crazy b*tches would be one of those girls. I pray to God that everyone keeps their sh*t together. You might catch Binkie getting kicked off of an airplane. You’ll probably catch Naomi leaving the club with Nicole Richie, Jamie Foxx…a couple of the homies. You’ll probably catch Lesley in Jamaica tanning topless on public beach, and you’ll probably catch me (Sarah) eating a burger with my mouth open.
Binkie: I don’t really care what people do as long as you’re on time for the show. Just everybody show up to the goddamn show and play your position.

Bossip: The name of your album is How to Be a Lady Volume 1, but what’s the real meaning?
Electrik Red: It’s basically tongue in cheek. It’s our 2009 version of what we feel the modern day woman should be like. We’re all very strong individuals and we don’t take crap from anybody. We’re quite the opposite (of a traditional lady) because we definitely have potty mouths, and we definitely don’t shy away from getting our point across in whatever manner. We’re more aggressive than the traditional definition of a lady which is quiet and dainty. But of course, we do have table manners and we know how to conduct ourselves in any given situation. We just have an edge to us and we’re not afraid to show it.

Electrik Red: We won’t have our cheeks out in Dubai, though!

Bossip: This edgy persona that you display…is it who you girls really are, or was it made up for the group?
Electrik Red: It’s definitely us. That inspired The Dream when he wrote the album. It was kind of like a weight lifted off his shoulders. He works with all kinds of artists like Mariah Carey and he might want to say certain things but she wouldn’t necessarily curse or be open to certain things. When he met us was like, ‘Wow, these b*tches are crazy!’ He felt like he could say whatever he wanted and so we did just that on the album.

Bossip: You girls are not the typical waifs that we see in girl groups. You’re thick and muscular and look like you might enjoy a cheeseburger every once and a while.
Electrik Red: We are brown women and we do appreciate a good turkey burger with cheese on it. However, we are going for high school skinny, but let me clarify that. I don’t mean no @ss, no tits, no nothing. That’s not it. We understand that we are four brown women and we embrace our bodies, but we want it all toned and intact.

Bossip: What’s your goal with Electrik Red?
Binkie: We’re trying to accomplish world domination. The most amazing thing about Electrik Red is that we’re actually friends. We like each other’s company. We’ve all had really amazing careers. We’re all trained in different aspects of the arts. There’s a common blood amongst us. I’m going to go on the record and say that little to nothing will break us off of this path. We applaud each other for our different journeys and things that we all want to do in our lives, but right now the main goal is to knock n*ggas in the head with this Electrik Red sh*t.

Bossip: You guys have done a pretty good job of fusing together different genres of music. What’s your sound?

Lesley: I would say we’re a mixture of the sexiness of Vanity 6 with the urban touch of Total, and a dash of Gwen Stefani Hollaback Girl. We’re all about girl power, but without the corniness of a Spice Girl.
Sarah: But, definitely Spice Girl money!

Bossip: A lot of your songs are racy and sexual. Are these songs coming from personal experience by chance?

(pause…then laughter erupts)
Binkie: Everything in the music is relative. I will say that “WFY” (We F*ck You) is dear to my heart. I’m a big supporter of “Kill Bill” although I can’t say that it’s a personal experience. If it goes down, you’ll hear about it.

Bossip: Who did you work with on the album?

Electrik Red: Dream executive produced the album with Uncle Tricky (Tricky Stewart). They are geniuses. They really honed in and figured it out for us. It was amazing.

Bossip: Which one of you guys were the back-up dancers for Usher?
Electrik Red: Lesley, Sarah and Binkie. Because we worked for such amazing artists like Usher and Ciara, they gave us little jewels of wisdom because their professionalism is top notch. We saw how they handled their careers and we were able to take note.

Bossip: Electrik Red is a crazy name. Who came up with that?
Binkie: I was chillin’with Lesley one day and we were riding around in our hometown, the old stomping grounds, and we kind of just blurted the name out. We wanted something that was really, really amazing, and would match the magnitude of the music that we were making. We built the idea of Electrik Red, and then we named it.

  • Nigga Said

Its not often that an all girl group comes out in which I can say I would smash all of the members, but i would give it to every single member of Electrik Red. One by one, and then a group effort. 4 versus 1.

  • rome a.k.a. (Fu#k! Da Diaz Bruddaz)

when your being all gimicky(edgy) trying to sell yourself i suppose.

I kinda like they style but they lyrics sound immature and non thought provoking…im getting ahhhh, gimick.

  • Jamaican Princess

I like the look of this group – pretty funky. I haven’t heard enough yet to know if I like their work or not. I say if you can find your niche in the market, make that money
    @ Me mo Likey
I agree with you. I never get why women refer to themselves like that. It is sad.

    Hey Glok and MIJDC

  • brnhornet

Man I don’t care what their music sounds like. Their nothing more unattractive then a woman who curse all the time. Their is a fine line between being a strong woman and being ghetto. Brsides I can’t even play the CD in my car with my daughter in it. AND THEIR SUPPOSED TO REPRESENT WOMEN OF FO TODAY???

  • LoveStruck

I heard there song…. it aggravated me…!!!- ALOT
They are straight copying Kelis… I kno she kinda fell off, but get your own style..The raspy voice.. the lyrics.. ugh…

  • Aww Man…

Good luck to them. Maybe they will be different. I haven’t heard their stuff yet, but I don’t really do pop music.
But it’s nice to see a black girl group out.

  • mane

  • Nic

    I hate*

  • So Good

So Good is a nice song. The music reminds me of a prince song.

  • mzsweetface

I say give them a chance to prove themselves. They may actually be decent. Besides we need something new.

  • Yeah I Said It

Ghetto. They are the modern day Mary Jane Girls. LMAO! They will be over after this cd.

    so myself!

  • told you so

they all need to just… tell me where they are. they can get.

  • Thicker than a Snicker**

You can listen to their debut album on imeem. It was ok, it was just off putting to hear all the cursing. To me it seemed to be a lack of vocabulary more than anything else. My favorite song is drank in my cup, I personally think they should have released that one first it would have created a bigger buzz.

  • ysr

If the dream is producing and writing for these chicks then they prob be good, but other than that they look like another Danity Kane BS group.

  • Shimmieya

Sooo, because others do it, it can’t be wack?

Please. You and them please saddown.

  • Eva

What do they mean with this line?

”Electrik Red: We won’t have our cheeks out in Dubai, though!”

  • the sane one

    why is everyone hatin?

  • *MiSsUnderSto0d*

i like their remix 2 “So good” with Lil Wayne..i havent heard anything else from them, so we’ll c..

  • so obvious

man whatever, i listened to like 3 of their songs just now, and two were unbearable, one was only slightly annoying. Their voices are high, and squeaky as hell. Dont we have enough dancin chicks who cant really sing already?

  • Me No Likey "when it is not payday"

Ok- I took a listen and immediately decided I will stick with the talented females such as:

    Sade
    Teedra Moses
    Leila James
    Liz Wright
    Stephanie Mills
    Chante Savage
    Algebra
    En Vogue
    Chaka Khan
    Natalie Cole
    Shanice Wilson
    Tracey
    Melba Moore
    Res

yada yada, Cause this mess right here is on the same level as Cassie, Paula Abdul and all the other Pop acts that are WIGGEDY WHACK!

  • BabyDoll2u

@Me No Likey “when it is not payday”…GIRL!

I was in DC and went to this hole in the wall, artsy fartsy Spoken Word joint and they announced a special performance, GUESS WHO????

Teedra Moses and Eric Roberson- I jumped right up out my seat :) - Good Times, Good Times :)

  • Slide Like A Fresh Pair of Gators

Even though they’re on a Major Label = major marketing dollars is supposed to be spent on them… I haven’t really heard of them and I guess it’s because they’re music is not that good or interesting…

One of the main things that you need to have a LONG & successful career in the music industry is TALENT!!! Being average doesn’t cut it… SMH

I’m sorry, I checked out their music and it’s nothing special…

Whichever Label had “Black Buddafly” messed up and should of done something major with them, ’cause they’re beautiful and talented…

  • smartarse

I bought this album looking for something different in the music scene. I hated it. I want my money back…..hell I’LL PAY YOU to take it back……Every song sounds like the dream doing fake voices….This is not how to act like a lady or get my money in the future…next

  • BKLYNZ OWN

ELECTRIK RED SOUNDS LIKE FIRE!! THERE NEW SINGLE AINT ALL THAT.BUT LETS WAIT AND SEE WHATS IN STORE.

  • BKbabe

These girls remind me of Vanity 6 back in the day, the song “So Good” is different. it has to grow on me. The girls are beautiful of course, in this industry appearance/looks are very important.

  • Miss Bee

@ True B….Chirl, don’t hold back next time. Say whatcha REALLLY feel. LMAO!

And, if their album sounds anything like their interview, I WILL PASS. Reading this gave me a headache…don’t need to hear funny voices IN my head too…la la la la

  • Huh? (new here but not 2 b confused with the other one)

I didn’t read the interview until just now. I agree with some of the others they are cursing too much. Too much cursing especially for no reason is weird.

  • B.I.N.F.L

I LIKE THEM I WISH THEM LUCK I DOUBT THEY’LL DO IT LIKE THE 90′S LATE EARLY,00 GROUP.

  • Wanjiru

…they’re cute but who the hell are they?…

    .

  • grapejoose

    En Vogue?

  • Hottestchickinthegame

Whichever Label had “Black Buddafly” messed up and should of done something major with them, ’cause they’re beautiful and talented…
    _________________

What’s funny is Black Buddafly was signed to Russell Simmons Music Group/Island Def Jam and Elecktrik Red are signed to Def Jam

I LOVE that song by Black Buddafly “Rock-A-Bye”…. The main guitar riff is SO SICK!!!!

I was hoping they would do well, but America wasn’t ready for that sound for an R&B group and I don’t think Russell had established the label enough before he released them. People were still checkin’for Destiny’s Child type shit…safe and super radio friendly R&B-Pop better known as BOOORING LOL!!!

  • Kitten

I’m digging these pretty girl I like the song “So Good” and they are equally pretty and nice looking. I like their style!

  • anonymous

These are nothing but KELIS KNOCK-OFFS.
The only reason I was liking that song even a little bit is because it sounds like Kelis.
I am a major Kelis fans. I have every album that is why I can say with certainty that they are nothing but KELIS KNOCK-OFFS/ WACK COPY CATS!!!!!

  • Jassy

lol..I wish some of you fools would shut up..if you don’t like it who cares…some of ya’ll comment as if they gonna actually read this crap

I like the group, but can’t stand the cursing. They seem to have the potential to be successful. But something is not right. Maybe it is the fact that they named the album how to be a lady and they don’t sound like ladies. They shouldn’t have let the dream do ALL of their songs either.
