The ever creative Kanye West gave a glow-in-the-dark performance tonight, and had a “Kanye” moment when accepting his award for Best Rap Album:

“It feels good to be home. A lot of people said hip hop is dead, but that was just Nas. And Common, you can’t drop an album the same year as me. Come on – you gonna play music on me? I appreciate all the support and all the prayers. It would be good taste to stop the music there. I appreciate everything and I know you are really proud of me right now and I know you wouldn’t want me to stop and you’d want me to be the number one artist in the world. And Mamma, all I’m gonna do is keep making you proud. We won this.”

His performance was one of the best ones all night…he had the whole audience getting teary-eyed with his tribute to his mother.

R.I.P. Dr. Donda West

    DADDY TOO

  • Strong Black Man

@beezy…lol i doubt white folks are scarred of Kanye, the polo pop collar don..He is one of the few so called “concious rappers”(lol oxy-moron), but none of what he says scares white people ala Booker T. Washington or Malcom X…lol that scares white people…Kanye tends to be the butt of jokes and his ego makes it easy to have little sympathy for him..

  • Strong Black Man

    scared*

  • VicKaLiCiouS

He was good, but not great. I didn’t expect him to be. I wouldn’t have even been able to perform that song. I give him props. He is a strong man. He picked the right songs to perform.

LONG LIVE KANYE….yeah he had a kanye moment but i was actually amused and not embarrassed.

  • http://FreshFromTheStreetz.blogspot.com FreshFromTheStreetz.blogspot.com

Yea Kanye had a GREAT performance. The Grammys were so boring this year. Kanye’s was the only memorable performance to me.

  • Glen

My name is Matthew and I am a white guy and damn Kanye scares the hell out of me……I go hide now…

  • Jake

    Kanye is the KING!

  • Tiff

Kanye makes it cool to like rap and gives it a great reach!!! Rap doesn’t just need to be seen as street and gutter music or ghetto music. It needs to be viewed as a genera that reaches all no matter where you are from. Not everyone identifies with the ghetto or streets or hard times etc etc. Black or white.

  • dayg715

kanye sucks. he’s a bootleg diddy.

  • Monique

I love Kanye, but I thought it was EXTRA f*cked up how he told Common to never release an album the same year as him…damn, i thought they were supposed to be like BBFs. SMH

  • ari

that was probably an inside joke monique

  • dani

Love ya kanye you took a grammy home for the chi and momma west RIP

  • anon

QUESTION: If Kanye suddenly became a crackhead, would he still win awards and be invited to perform at the Grammy’s a la Amy Winehouse?

  • Built2Bully

Kanye West proves he is a very classless person… and he showed it on the biggest stage for music… When a country singer puts him on blast and his peers are laughing at him… he should know that he is becoming a horrible joke who’s music is bought by white america, we will see how much damage he did OR didnt do to those who support him… honestly I believe he won because of the tragedy that he has delt with… jmo….

  • Built2Bully

Just to clarify, his music is supported by all races but bought mostly by white people and to have put on a good performance in the begining and end it with a great one… and then to ruin it by the continuing unnecessary ego, he will turn his “core” audience off…

  • mr mr

    @Strong Black Man…

No you did not say white folks were scared of Booker T. Washington…? Give me a break…they loved his peanut dealing azz

  • *W*

THE BESt Performace of all time!

    HE IS A KING!!!!

  • Mo’Ree

*Sigh* I thought his performance was the best of the night by far….then he opened his mouf…his ego kills all the good vibes i have towards him.

He is still ahead of his time musically love the glow

  • mirena

I HAVE TO SAY I WAS PISSED THAT THEY TURNED THE MUSIC ON WHEN HE WAS TALKING ABOUT HIS MOTHER, SHAME ON THE BASTARDS.

  • gap & gucci

    leave ye alone

  • Free

i’m w/you amina. i would have turned the music up on his *ss. it obviously was more important to put people down or make fun of them first and THEN remember to squeeze mom in at the end. i’m sure she’s proud.

  • I’m Just Me

I LOVE KANYE WEST!!! I THOUGHT THIS PERFORMANCE WAS AWESOME AND I LOVED THE GLO IN THE DARK. THAT IS MY THING, WELL THAT AND GLITTER. I THINK THE TRIBUTE TO HIS MOM WAS VERY HEARTFELT AND IT HAD ME IN TEARS. GO KANYE…YOU NEVER CEASE TO AMAZE ME!!

  • BaBiEDoLL

I Think His Performance Was Good I Like Ye… I Think His Cd Is Da Ish If U Like Real Ish U Cant Do Nothing But Respect It And Give It Props Damn. Whoever Said You Aint Allowed To Arrogant? Let That Man Do Him! If U Dont Like Him Dont buy His Cd Who Cares?

Yall The Same Mofo’s Who Be In The Club Rocking When “The Goodlife” Comes On! ENVY Is A Bish And She Bites!

I Was Teary Eyed When He Did The Mama Song, If U Wasnt Your A$$ Is Heartless And Must Have Never Felt That Pain But Its Real And I Know He Loved That Woman!

  • sello

as 4 them hatters who think Mr West sucks, must go to hell! Ye is a highly creative artist, who making it rain on them hoes.and danm the man can dress!!!

  • Karen

Kanye gave a great performance, but i was a little disappointed with a few things…

#1 the show only last for so long, yes it seems rude to cut the music on while they are talking, but they obviously give you a warning to wrap it up (rihanna read it off the telepromter while accepting her award). So if they are saying wrap it up, then you should wrap it up…

#2- The comment made to/about common was not called for…Say thank you without having to call other names, unless you are saluting them.

#3- It is neccessary to always act like a little cry baby on all occassions. I don’t know why, but it seems like Kanye is always crying about something…Man UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hey girl

I lve the album but i can not stand the artist

  • honeychild

Eh….I watched the Grammys and his performance was about like everyone else’s – average. But I did think him milking his mom’s death so he could talk over the time limit was very TACKY. SMH And that’s why the other artists got up and clowned his azz the rest of the night. Shame on you Ye.

  • MJB’s #1 Fan

Kanye isn’t going to shut up until it is too late and he gets black-balled by the industry.

You can never know what to expect will come out of his mouth and they (white people) are going to get scared to have him on a live show.

I wish he would shut the *uck up and just perform his songs. He’s be such a better entertainer.

If you notice, most people aren’t talking about his performance. Everything is focused on the negativity that he always brings to things.

It wasn’t impressive that he said what he did about the music playing. That doesn’t make him a strong person. It makes him annoying and tacky as hell.

  • Kigali

    Aminah,

I didnt see the performance but you gave a good wrap up. Maybe its just me but I couldnt nor wouldnt sensationalise my mothrs death at the Grammys. I mean if my mother were an artist than it would be appropriate. Did it really seem as if he was dissing Common and Nas? Lyrically both of those brothers cant be touced. In fact I consider Common to be the Poet Laureate of hip hop.

    Strong Black Man,

What is so oxy moronic about a concious rapper? Was KRS-One an oxy moron for the past 20+ years of his career?

  • Frog-a-licious

Yes he had the crowd crying Saw Ne-Yo’s mom cry. Shoot even I was crying.

  • gap & gucci

    nothin bad

  • Mhm

idiots who played the music, he didnt even get a chance to say a sentence and yet they let rihanna tell her life story

  • gap & gucci

they let a.keys talk forever too

they just didnt wanna give ‘ye a lot of time because he’s unpredictable

  • babygirl

Ye is being Ye. . . why is everyone so suprised?

I thought the ish was comical.

  • babygirl

The interesting part about it is that alot of guys are like that on the southside of Chicago. Many of them possess a confident swagger. No joke. . .

  • Great Unstoppable

    (also @Aminah)

    Yooo,

he didn’t disrespect Nas=they work together on songs (f.e. “Still Dreamin”)

Kanye told he was honoured to work with one of the greatest of all time…He’s a fan of Nas, so watchu saying?

Plus, he & Common been working together for years, that was an inside joke (about dropping an album the same year), he produced his last two albums

Besides, they both won a grammy for

Rap Performance by a Duo or Group: “Southside,” Common, featuring Kanye West.

    Voila

  • Just Sit And Be Pretty

I love him, he is hilarious. Most folks would have tried to talk over the music, but I’m glad he shut them down. Can’t recall ever seeing that done at an award show before, they put the music on and that’s that.

  • Just_Wanna_Know

Kanye’s an azz. I was actually starting to have sympathy for him after his mom passed but I see nothings changed. He’s still arogant.

  • PRTTYBRWNGIRL

whats wrong with paying tribute to his mother whom he once considered a living legend? thats at the folks who remarked about kanye capitalizing on his mothers death… because kanye generates enough talk about himself all by his damn self with his outrageous comments

  • trina

i think kanye had every right to talk about his mom, he was givin the time to he just opted to talk about other artists in his allotted time instead of what mattered. i think his inflated ego should and will be his downfall.

  • Celebrity CSI

Love Kanye! His performance was great! Glad to see him thriving in light of recent events.

  • High_Times

This guy sucks, the only people that listen to this guy are white.

  • SoChi

    FIRST OFF

let me speak on it since i am from the Chi myslf and am fully versed on this topic. Kanye’s speech was crazy. i thought i was watchen a damn commercial or somethin. he was gettin at them producers necks tho talkin about keepin’ dat damn music off during his speech LOL. but real talk.. i hope he wasnt tryna roast common.. cuz i getz down wit both of them and erthang.. but i loved finding forever way more than i liked graduation.. and dats REAL.

  • kigali

    PRTTYBRWNGIRL,

The tribue to his mother wasnt the issue. Thats why you have wakes, funerals and other cultural, religious events after someone passes. His mother wasnt an entertainer. His grief should be kept private, if not for himself, but for other members of his family.

As wealthy and popular as he is, he could have had a start studded event for his mother any other time. The Grammy’s are for awards and performances not for private euologies.

    Its self promotion.

  • ama

He is the only conceited, attention seeking individual that I can actually tolerate. This is probably because his is actually bringing legit music to the table. Sure he fails to think before doing, a majority of the time, but w/out his antics half of you would be bored as hell.

  • Kendra

Well done Kanye..I think the performance was the best all night! He did an excellent job and I’m soooo glad that he made them turn that music off to give props to his mother and didn’t just leave the stage like they wanted him to do. He has his moments, but you can’t deny the fact that he’s a good artist.

  • L

The way that he keeps exploiting the death of his mother is disgusting and tacky. I lost my father as a teenager so I completely understand that he is hurting but using his mother’s death as a form of self-promotion is just wrong. Didn’t Lil Mama just loose her mother to cancer? You don’t see her publicly grieving, insulting others, and throwing tantrums.

  • Sasha

He copied that from The Strokes innovative my ass. Look up theri video 12:51. That was out in like 2003.

  • famou$ dude

    yeah, the shades hot

  • http://www.lovingmeans@aol.com 1TruDiva has tickets for Jaheim’s sh*t! Working on MJB and Jay-Z’s now!

I thought him paying homage to his mother was admirable. I think he was sincere in giving her the shout-outs. If it wasn’t for her, he wouldn’t be the man that he is today. Arrogant or not, the brother is beginning to grow on me. Aside from the fact that he makes great music, I appreciate the way he handled the situation with his comment! At least he didn’t get up there and was down right degrading!

  • look at me

yeah when he said, oh yall gone turn on the music while Im talking”. That was hilarious, Kanye went hard on em. No Homo LOL

  • Candy

i usually Think hes an A-hole ,but i really liked his performance and his acceptance speech.

  • DM

Kanye is the biggest idiot in the game and is fugly as hell.

  • James

great performance, however, Kanye was not original, that whole glow in the dark concept came from Michael jackson, when he performed thriller live, and he had the whole glow in the dark thriller jacket and eyes, i guess you guys are too young to remember that, but it is on youtube.

  • Whas Really Good

    K-Mia

    THANK-YOU!
