Black Barber Gives Free Haircuts To Kids Who Do Read To Him

An Iowa barber is giving back to the community in a big way.

Via Vibe Mag:

Courtney Holmes gave out free haircuts to local kids if they read to him as part of the community’s Back-to-School Bash in Comiskey Park, the Desmoines Register reports.

Children sat in the chair and read as Holmes clipped away and got them fresh for the new year, a form of currency the barber was in full support of.

Tayshawn Kirby, 9, read from Carol Parenzan Smalley’s book “Fats, Oils and Sweets,” and informed Holmes the average person eats about 150 pounds of sugar each year, and when children had a hard time pronouncing certain words, Holmes pitched in and helped them sound the words out.

“I just want to support kids reading,” Holmes said.

St. Mark Youth Enrichment, a 25-year-old organization dedicated to homework help, literacy, and creativity, donated some of the books during the event.

Great way of getting young men ready for back to school time!
