Being a good father is more than money, it’s about investing your time, energy, love, values and resources into your child. A close childhood friend of mine is the son of an NBA player. Not to be mean, but his mother was basically a jump off who got pregnant and cashed in on child support. My friend never saw or heard from his father,never even got a birthday card and it affected him greatly. Even in his twenties it still hurts him that his father never showed any interest in his life. Women need to think about how their choices will affect these children, and stop dreaming about all the Gucci and Louis they plan on buying with child support money.

Some women tend to “overestimate” the value of money in a relationship, just like some men do with having a relationship with a “beautifuly young” woman.

Sometimes, I think that we stereotype ourselves. However, I’m just making a personal observation from my own life. I don’t think that SOME black women even knows what a father and husband does and how he fits into the family. I know that I didn’t and even now sometimes don’t. My husband has had to “train” me. He grew up with both of his parents

When I grew up, I didn’t have a father…only a mother and grandmother. Grandmother had a sorta “father role” in our family. I didn’t really meet my biological father until I was an adult. So, if SOME black women don’t appreciate a stable black man is because they probably don’t know many and what they do.

I know that some will get angry at me, but it’s just an personal observation.

I asked my daughter how many students in her class lived at home with both of their biological parents. Not stepparents, no single parents and no live-in boyfriends or girlfriends. Out of 28 kids, there are only two (2)who lived with their birth parents.

So true. I understand young and silly girls wanting to be with the cool guy or the cute guy or the guy who’s most popular, but when it comes to bringing children into this world and finding a quality mate, all those superficial things should go out the window. I know exactly what you mean-my husband worked at a gas station while in college when I met him and people I knew at the time thought I was crazy to even consider being with somebody like that but I knew early in life what I wanted my life to be.Growing up with grandfathers,uncles, my father and other positive men around showed me what a man is and how he should treat a lady.My husband had all those characteristics and I also knew he was ambitious and we would make it.We got married,we both finished college and we worked together for everything we have now.He used to tell me the same thing you said about women who wouldn’t even answer back when he tried to speak to them since he was a gas station attendant.Huh-believe me,its their loss.All the girls I knew at the time that told me I was dumb for wanting him are still out there lonely and bitter because the men they picked for money made them earn it!!!

But, what I’m saying is that I can remember guys I went to college with that may have come off nerdy or lame and I see them now and they are doing the d@mn thang. And those ‘nerdy’ guys are actually very much attractive now to the mature and grounded woman’s eye. My husband was the same way. That’s real talk and I’m woman enough to admit that I had that mentality as well. It’s all about a certain maturity level though. Once you realize that all that glitters is definitely not gold and everything that looks good to you isn’t good for you the better off we all are. I had always dated the fine, s3xy popular guys, athletes or frat boys when I was in college. Even after college I dated what you would stereotype as a high roller or smooth brotha, but then I realized that all that attention and stats meant absolutely nothing when it came down to the beauty of the actual person. Not saying that men with those traits or attributes aren’t good people but I was more focused on what looked good on paper with them. My husband is a very attractive man who satisfies not only my physical but more importantly my mental beyond words. He treats me like a lady and is very family oriented. But, back in the day he wasn’t one of those flashy brothas with all that money and status. Some women are truly drawn to things that are more for show and things that look good to others as opposed to what will keep them happy and secure for years to come.

A lot of women like myself realize with age and experience that they had the wrong approach after being miserable and had a string of failed relationships. I realized that a man with morals, financial security, a value system, and a good heart is far more attractive than a man is who is gorgeous, penniless and promiscuous. A good man wants commitment. He does not run away from his responsibilities and go from female to female looking for someone to take care of him with his day to day living. It is a hard lesson and a valuable one.

Gotta hit you back on the attactive issue….prior to sitting down and talking to a sista at the correctional facility where I was housed I was that hood brotha that kept the finest sistas on his arm, playa playa and all that. Because of time spent in camp hittin the weights I think I only wore only wife beaters for a couple of years. In my last trip to Juvi before turning 18 I was counseled by a gorgeous sista and was like “yea its on” she checked me on the size of my head and ego and we went from there. I have done this sometimes. It is because after they say good morning, they want to know your name and then they go from there.
