Oil companies are corrupt. I boycotted Shell a long time ago for supporting Apartheid.

So would the settlement check be considered gas money?

finally important news on this stupid azz site that doesn’t involve a husband cheating or a gold chain.

Sounds like they are still getting screwed to me. That’a a lot – but for a whole village, 13 years worth of fighting, etc and everything else they’ve probably had to endure. Shell got off easy.

It’s tough to practice “conscious consumerism”…Because all major corporations have some kinda skeleton(s) in their closets.That being said-I have not knowingly purchased Shell branded gasoline since this incident.I also have not knowingly purchased Citgo branded gasoline…or gasoline sold by the 7-11 store chain.I can’t see putting money in the pockets of Hugo Chavez as a good thing.

BTW-15.5 million for 9 lives is peanuts.The lawyers probably got most of that.

$15.5 mil ain’t nothing… they should have to do WAY better than that.

My law prof was on the legal team that won the settlement and I am so excited, even though to lay persons it seems like a small settlement, it is actually quite impressive for an Alien Tort Statute claim.

And for the record the lawyer’s that handled this case, work for a not for profit, so none of the settlement is going to them. There are certain litigation costs that will have to be taken care of, but for the most of the money will be going to the people.

Royal Dutch Shell 2008 profits: $26.277 Billion.

They probably consider the $15.5 Million the cost of doing business.

I haven’t bought shell gas for many years. They seem to be the worst oil company when it comes to ethics.

@ Dr. Funk – I do understand your frustrations though b/c $15.5 mil is pennies to Shell. And, I remember my prof saying that Shell had about 30 lawyers on this case and they only had about 9 representing the plaintiffs, so just that the fact that they didn’t fight it out was a huge deal. But it is nonetheless frustrating when you consider the massive amts of money shell obtained from their oil drilling in that village.

I know the Legal team did not want a DRAWNOUT case because it could have gone on for years

While the Complainants should have received a more significant COMPENSATION this out of court settlement has shown an ADMITTANCE of guilt

Shell clearly played apart in the DEATH of these Men by PROVIDING information to the SS

The money will not bring the POET Ken Saro-wira and the others back but their families can rest knowing that they found some kind of JUSTICE

@bb – I definitely will…You are exactly right. They didn’t want to drag it out, and even though the Plaintiffs wanted to get to tell their story in a court of law, they knew they probably would have gotten less after a trial.

That settlement should have been 50 times that amount

here is the thing people when it comes to natural resources. It’s a battlefield. These oil companies all they know is money. but i blame BLACK People when they see money, from the white master they kill each other. If you aren’t even protecting each other of course the stranger from outside will wipe you out.

It’s a scandal that they are only getting $15 million. Shell makes $15 million in a day probably from oil production in West Africa alone. The Niger Delta should sue Shell until they go out of business.

They ALL do it. Not just ONE company.

I try to be conscious about this kind of stuff,
but in reality, every single one of them is dirty and the environmental racism, has been going on for decades….

They didn’t really win anything…
BTW: $15 million doesn’t make up for what they done adn the amount of people that were actually wronged….And yeah, I do try to avoid these type articles, it pisses me off, they reported about it, but most likely the blks will be cheated and you’ll never hear about this again….Not to mention their sub-par treatment of these people, and their land, doesn’t stop….. They pay them what they feel like paying…And they continue to STEAL resources FROM THEM, so what’s the real point?
