Soulja Boy says he used to be too ignorant to understand Hov’s lyrics:

Teen rapper Soulja Boy Tell Em hasn’t always understood Jigga’s lyrics. “Jay-Z, I always respected him,” he revealed in an interview. “Always. But I didn’t always like his music. I guess because I was too young, and I couldn’t understand what he was saying.”

The teen rapper, who will reportedly join Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy on tour soon [more here], says “I got signed when I was 16 years-old. Before I got signed, I heard the song, and I was like, ‘That’s Jay-Z.’

My favorite song from him was ‘Dirt Off Your Shoulder.’ I guess I liked the beat or the way he was flowing on there. Any other song I used to hear, I ain’t really vibe with it like that…Since I’m older now and I grew up, I like Jay-Z now. I’m a fan of his music. At first, I used to just respect him because he was Jay-Z, now I’m a fan of his music and I wanna work with him.”

This dude can’t keep his athlete ridden foot out of his mouth, can he? We can’t imagine what he felt about Nas’ music…

    he coulda said worse

  • JustME

I wish he would just disappear…I keep hoping that soulja boy really isn’t that ignorant and he really goes to Harvard and is doing his thesis on how much ignorance people will tolerate…but that could just be wishful thinking

  • Patrick

At least he admits being ignorant which is a lot better than a lot of our people.

  • geeup

How can you respect someone and not even know why it is they are respected in the first place. Man I really dislike this kid and I don’t even know why it is people like him. I guess it’s the same thing huh. O well Hovas album is going to be the best of 2009 (i hope).

I don’t have a problem with what he said. I mean dude is just being honest. I bet a lot of artist couldn’t vibe with Jay Z especially southern artist. SO he was being honest and now he is a fan.

this dude makes dance music who gives a dam what he thinks. gotta love the media.

  • Back On My Swag

The first step is admitting it….

  • tania

do you expect a regular 16 yr old to understand the depth of some of his lyrics? i am 30 and sometimes i am like oooooooooooh i get it jigga. people are a trip

  • Diamond and Pearl Mixture

    LOL @ JustME

    I co-sign 100%

  • ohsolovely

    I love you Jay!

hov has been making music for the better part of soulja boy’s lifetime. how can anyone expect him to understand those lyrics when ur like 8, 9 and 10?

  • Anonymous Anonymous

When I was 16, I understood the depth of the lyrics. Unlike some people, I wasn’t ignorant. I listened to all kinds of music (minus ignorant songs). I was and still am a very open-minded person. Then again girls tend to mature faster than boys do. So I don’t blame him for being an immature and ignorant 16 year old boy at the time. Kudos to him for admitting it, though.

Soulja Boy’s lyrics are written for grade school kids. You have to have to be at a 4th grade reading level to even listen to that mess.

  • Shorty09

The fact that he was 16 means nothing. Did he not go to school??? In English class we read stories, books, essays, etc. and then we had to answer questions about what we read and even describe in our own words what we got out of the reading. So for him not to be able to use context clues or even get the gist of what Jay was saying…just sad. I can only imagine how he felt about Shakespeare…lawd help ya chidren

  • Mad Love

Mad respect to Soulja. He was just a kid, how could he really understand what Hov was talking about? Come on, lil Mans was 8 & 9 when J was doing his thing. Don’t hate on the kid for keeping it real. That’s why lil kids like his stuff, it’s easy to relate to and understand.

    #1 Why is anybody surprised…
#2 Soulja Boy shouldn’t be allowed to even say Jay Z!!
#3 Where in the hell is this boy’s mother???
    #4 Those sunglasses are terrible…
    jus sayin

  • miss kay

Is it me or is soulja boy’s hairline crooked in this picture? soulja boy tell em’ get that hairline straight before you turn that swag on!

  • Love None

You know this statement is hilarious to me because it just goes to show how wide the hip hop divide is going on right now. It is unfortunate you can’t have artists like Dead Prez or a Public Enemy type of group come out in today’s bootlegging society because when i was young I understood what all the rappers were saying and I was not the top student in my school by no means.

If you listen and pay attention then you can easily understand what an artist is saying because most of the ones like Jay-Z still use simple “street” acronyms and common terms that many people young and old can still relate to in their wordplay. However, I am not surprised by Soldier Boy’s statement because many of the young generation don’t even care or take the time to listen and decipher what they are learning in school nowadays!

  • mostarstyle

    idiot..

  • Ian P

Half the time I dont know what jay-Z is talking about either and I am 29! Jay-Z is cool and all but he really aint shit. Compared to other rappers he just got in at the right time.

  • 2ndToNone

Man is he ever a poster child for these yougins out here who don’t know shyt! I actually give him credit for admitting it, but that is precisely why Lil Wayne can even be put in a “best rapper” category…look at the IQ points of the people voting for him!

To Anon: Obvioulsy YOU dont REALLY LISTEN to Jay if you think all he does is rap about street ish. That’s the problem. He’s got 9 albums, check it out.

  • HipHopMama718

Hell I don’t understand anything Soulja Boy raps about either.

  • Ms. Boss

Soulja Boy was 16. Im 15 and i dont understand anything Jay says. I respect Jay to though. I’m not used to what Jay has gone through to put what he does in his lyrics so how am I supposed to know what it means? Soulja was honest and even though sometimes he makes stupid songs he does have the sense to come out and be honest so anyone that has to diss him needs to be quiet because he is getting his money no matter what. Let him do him and you do you. If I was him i would tell yall this, “Did I ask for you guys to like me or comment on every last thing I say?”

  • Ms. Boss

and JustMe shut up ok. Stop hating because Soulja has money and can afford what he has and is making it. Im so sick of black people bringing down other black people. Be happy for him. Aren’t you happy to see a young struggling kid finally make it out the ghetto and become something? instead you go on and on about how you wish he was dead. Soulja is having fun. He makes the stupid songs for KIDS ! He even said it. Its not for grown folk. So stop criticizing him because you can criticize him but u can let your kids listen to Young Jeezy, Gucci Mane, Lil Wayne, etc. So dont get mad because they make music thats worse. Soulja makes dance songs. So deal with it and shut up and quit talking that trash of yours. Thank you very much !
