As if Madonna needs anymore publicity, her adoption appeal of baby Mercy of Malawi just went through which means she will be the mother of two African babies. What is it with Hollyweird and adopting African children?
Madonna’s family has just gotten bigger, now that the pop star has legally won the right to adopt a daughter from Malawi.
Preparations are already underway to bring Chifundo “Mercy” James, 3, from the African country to America private jet, after the singer stayed up throughout the night hoping for a courtroom victory.
“It’s the early hours in New York now but my client has been awake all night waiting for this,” Madonna’s Malawi lawyer, Alan Chinula, tells PEOPLE. The attorney spoke to his client as soon as the ruling was made official, at around 2 a.m. her time Friday. “She was ecstatic when I broke the news to her. She said, ‘Thank heavens.’ “
Chinula says he is “now awaiting instructions from New York to start preparing travel arrangements for Mercy. I have to be there for her passports and everything.”
It is likely to take three to five days before the paperwork is ready and the child is able to leave and join fellow adoptee David, also 3. He was formally adopted in 2008 after some controversy and legal challenges.
We just hope Madge gives the girl some culture and history so she doesn’t grow up completely confused. SMH

I am all for adoption and providing children with LOVE above and beyond meeting the material needs.
I do often question why is is the “trend” to look outside of the United States when their are millions of children in foster care right here, right now?
Why go to Asia, Russia, and Africa when you can go to NC, SC, NYC, LA to adopt an American child in need?
I have an aunt that only gets white kids to keep as foster kids. Her & her husband say they refuse to keep black kids because her best friends husband was shot and killed & she was raped by a 17 yr old black foster child that had a lot of issues

Whats wrong with celebs adopting African children? Good for her, she has enough money to take care of her kids and the adopted ones, why not.
She seems to be a very involved mother, so I applaud her bringing another child into her home. If the U.S. adoption process wasn’t so contrived, of which most do not seem to be aware she’d probably adopt domestically.
FYI, the U.S. foster and adoption system is full of Black children, many older too, so if any of the posters around here would like to give a child a home, there are plenty that need one.
Good she needs to adopt more African children, this is the way she must atone for the sins of her forefathers.

If your so concerned about African children, why don’t you adopt them.
As someone else mentioned, that is a terrible headline. People want to act as though she’s doing some great disservice to this child and her nonexistent/uninvolved family but the truth is this baby girl will have far more opportunities and love than if she was raised in an orphanage. Not sure how people don’t see that. Though I do wonder how this adoption was allowed to go through with all the hoopla the judge made before about her trying to cir*****vent their residency laws.

Lionel Richie- donated millions from is comeback concert to rebuiling LA schools with a focus on minority mentorship and counseling in the wake of Hurricane Katrina
Chris Rock, Russel Simmons, JayZ- created a fund for AA children in NY, NJ and CT to attend various summer programs to learn about the recording industry and various financial impacts of business to the AA community.
Malaack Rock (Chris’s Wife) started a fund to help prepare AA women and teens for professional jobs by teaching presentation skills, business etiquette, business dress and various computer courses.
Kimora- hires minority teens every summer and provides scholarships to FIT.
Prince, Smokey Robinson, and various older Black Musicians- fund the Music in Schools campaigns that pay inner city schools to provide music teachers, lesssons and instruments and music software to keep these cl*****es on the list.
I volunteer with the Black Child Development Inst. providing career guidance/exploration, help with homework and tutor in Math, Reading and Computer Skills.
So do the AA Frats and Sororities along with BigBrother Big Sister—–so plenty of AA’s help children/adopt them in WAYS that do not get the BIG PRESS because they are not a POP CELEB.

@ Mia- there are plenty of orphanages/group homes right here in the USA that are in the EXACT same predicament so that argument is not valid. Prior to this career I worked in Social Services/Foster Care and hunger/starvation is going on right now in these homes. Don’t even kid your self- please don’t even think that.

Isn’t that what everyone wants, to live the American dream. Kudo’s to Madonna for giving the kidd a better chance at life. Even if she can’t fulfill all of the needs of this child, the child will have a better start at life then most American kidds. Didn’t the father originally say that he wanted his daughter to be raised within her country, amongst her people and know their traditions/customs. What happened?? To compare orphanages in America to Africa is no contest. In Africa poverty is abundant, in America poverty can be dealt with through proper agencies. In Africa food and medicine is scarce. The kidds own father thought that she was dead at birth. The kidd was being raissed by her grandmother. Just like in America, when the father found out that the kidd was being adopted, he immediatly cried foul, but yet wasn’t there for the first three years of her life.

Anyone here ever been to Africa and slept on the ground under a tin roof with holes in winter with one thin blanket? Walked over a mile for water to cook and drink with? I have a few times, and each was an eye-opening experience.
I’m not saying their lives are bad over there, because it’s THEIR lives, but if a child has NO parents (true orphan) and someone reaches out a hand to them, I say good for them. Let them have opportunities.
Adopting children that have living parents that have hit hard times, I don’t agree with. If you really want to help the child, sponsor the whole family to a better life so they can maintain their roots (Madonna has the funds to that for David and Mercy, but she chooses to separate them from family. If she really wanted the best for them, she would be merciful and help these kids why they stay in familiar surroundings with close and extended family.

If a celebrity wants to adopt an African child then so *****ing be it. Does it matter that they’re white? Hell no, because the black celebrities sure as hell ain’t doing it. That child, as well as the other African children adopted by celebrities will no doubt experience a MUCH better standard of living. They will have better education (which some of y’all need), better medical care, and most importantly the love of a family who has the means to take care of them. So everyone up in here being all extra judgmental, as if they are actually in a position to BE judgmental, need have a seat.

Madonna is divorced and no one, to my knowledge, has discussed her parenting negatively. The fact is, these children were living in orphanages in desperately poor conditions with a very small chance to live well – until there is proof to the contrary, that has changed.
If you feel that you can offer African children or AA children a good home life because you have a perfect marriage, a character/personal life beyond reproach, and the emotional and financial ability to support them – which I *****ume you do as you are judging Madonna – then find some kids in need, care for them, and be an example of what you’d like to see in the world.

No, you can not “just as easily buy a baby in the States.” The process here is extremely long and intricate. They do ALL kinds of investigating and the like, and examine the parents’ lifestyle to determine what type of upbringing the adopted child will have. This is why you see so many people (celebrities and non-celebrities) go overseas to adopt children. It’s easier.
If y’all *****s ain’t reaching out to Africa to adopt any of those poor, underprivileged children, y’all have no basis to question Madonna on the subject. I second that ‘***** off.’
Does it really matter if Madonna’s white? Madonna is an icon. She’s rich. She’s comp*****ionate and she is clearly a good mother to her other kids. Mery’s biological mother died during childbirth, her biological father is a a shameless opportunist and hr immediate family didn’t care enough to adopt her.
And adopting abroad is important because while I agree kids in America should be adopted, at least they have an opportunity to have a future. Orphanages in Russia, Africa, China and Thailand are overcrowded and these kids are brought into sex slavery and abuse.

Further, I did not state Madonna was better than any person. In fact, I did not judge Madonna at all – that was all you – I stated that, barring any proof of her being a bad parent, what she offers those children is better than a parent less life in an orphanage.
I did offer a challenge, though:

none of these celebrities can adopt a child in the United States because if the authroities were to look at their home lives, histories, lifestyle choices, they would probably refuse their requests to become adoptive parents. Angelina Jolie adopted a black child and all the money that her and brad has that child looks like a bum and her hair is never done… I bet if you look at a magazine right now her hair is going to look like who done it. For the record, Madonna has been funding orphanages and donating money to Malawi for quite some time now. As for Angelina Jolie, she has been doing the same, and has also been working as a goodwill amb*****ador for a long time. They have been there trying to help the people of Africa. I mean lets be serious, out of all the celebrities, Madonna and Angelina are probably some of the LAST people who would need any more publicity, as they get it all the time for every little thing they do. Also, since Madonna has been donating money directly TO orphanages, I’m pretty sure it HAS and will continue to help those children.
