Celia Cruz To Be Honored With Tribute Show
Almost 11 years since she left us, the late Celia Cruz will be honored in New York City’s legendary Apollo Theater. According to People en Español, the late Cuban singer will be revived in a performance at the well-known establishment in Harlem.
The show will reportedly star Nissa Gathers, Cita Rodriguez (the daughter of Pete “El Conde” Rodríguez), Amma McKen, Lucrecia, and José Alberto “El Canario” and, according to EFE, all will join their voices to celebrate the late cubana’s musical legacy. Cruz died on July 16, 2003 from brain cancer.
The show is being produced by several organizations; the Centro Cultural Caribeño, Instituto de la Diáspora Africana with Omer Pardillo and the Celia Cruz Legacy Project.
As expected, Cruz’s music will be the lone true star of the show. According to People en Español, those who attend the performance will hear the late salsa singer’s songs “Cúcala”, “Químbara” and “Yerberito modern” (to name a few).
The show is set to take the stage on March 22.
For those in NYC, will you be checking it out? We know one thing: this better do the late and great Celia justice. Or else Celia fans and the Internet will be ablaze with disappointment!
