Clearly those of you who think she is entitled to “nothing” (other than support for the baby) have never been married. Although I am barely “middle class” myself, I understand that there are levels to standards of living that families and couples become accustomed to. While I have no clue (and neither do any of you) about what really led to their separation, to assume that she has to right to ask for spousal support to maintain her lifestyle is ridiculous.

With that being said, a woman should be able to take care of yourself and her children in the event that her husband leaves or she is forced to leave him. However, actively preparing for that is somewhat of a betrayal of the mutual dependency that marriage and the creation of family presupposes. One of the many dilemmas facing us “modern” women.

In most instances I would agree. However, they haven’t been married long enough for her to become accustomed to anything. I would suspect that if he gave her a new lambo tomorrow she would be just as surprised as she was when she received that 9-carat diamond.

Personally, I am ambivalent towards Kellis’ cries for extravagant support simply because I think she saw this divorce coming a long time ago and decided to get pregnant as her plan B. Afterall, clear judges love to apply that 21st century whip (aka absurdly over-the-top child support or a felony record for a crime not committed, whichever is the quickest path back to the plantation) to the backs of nouveau riche black men, lest they forget who is still their master(s).

The men today act like little girls when it comes to working hard, being a man, and actually being to one to PAY for your families well being. 50/50 is nice, but it’s really up to the couple to decide what that means to them. The man’s 50% may be to make the dough, the woman’s 50% might be to hold the house and take care of the kids and him. I see nothing wrong with this, but we have so many unambitious men out there that they make it a requirement that their wives work like donkey’s for life AND take care of them, the kids, and the home. SMH at the unfairness a lot of women, Black women especially, suffer within a marriage these days.

As for Nas and Kelis: The baby could care less who did what to who, it’s coming and it needs food, clothes, and roof over it’s head. Nas legally married this woman and they consented to lay down in a marriage bed and make this baby. He needs to hand over money ASAP.

Yeah, I agree. Floetry (this was before they broke up) also performed at the show I saw at Merriweather. It was packed. I loved everyone, but Erykah was my favorite. She had a real futuristic, funky vibe, and she brought most of the audience to its feet.

It depends on what you like, girl, but I haven’t been to a club in ages. The ones I hear the most about are Love, The Park, and a few others. Zanzibar is an older spot in town. There are some nice lounges in the city — Indeblue, Zola, Oya, 18th Street Lounge, Ozios are some that I’ve been to. Oh, and there’s Sequoia in Georgetown. There are a lot of spots in Adams Morgan if you like live music and smaller spots, like Rumba Cafe and Habana Village.

Those are insecure women to me, and not to stereotype, but I’ve personally observed that a number of, um, not so attractive women seem to harp on the so-called “flaws” of others. For example, one day my friend and I were going to a concert in D.C. and were standing in line, and we noticed that two sisters were brutally critiquing other people in line. They even talked about a brother’s shoes. You know what they looked like? Not much.

I have no issue with giving compliments to an attractive sista. I think more of us need to build each other up more rather than expose our own insecurities and low self-esteem through the verbal ugliness that we sometimes unleash. If you have it going on, you shouldn’t be threatened by another woman’s pulchritude, popularitiy, sense of style, intelligence, success, etc. Remember, pretty is as pretty does.

It’s just been my experience when dealing with men–and not just the black ones, but those of other races as well–that the more education YOU AS A WOMAN have, the more they’ll want you to scale back on doing your thing, and get offended when you’re trying to go to school and come up. This is classic crabs in a barrel mentality, only on a man vs. woman scale. When I was in my early twenties and dating, thinking about graduating and hitting grad school, I had more than a few dudes whine, “Why you always going to school?” I’d be like, WTF? Once I started to set the bar a little higher and deal with guys who, like me, were about education, I didn’t hear that any more.

So, yes, your bus driver is fine, the janitor can be okay. But is he trying to keep me at his level, IN SPITE OF THE FACT that when I get elevated, so does he? Or does he want to keep us both down. I know that janitors, plumbers, etc., make GOOD money, but education, for me, has never been about money. You can make $150 an hour, but without the right education behind it, without knowing what you’re DOING, you may only end up keeping $35 or $40 of that. Nas should be expected to pay child support and half of the childs’ medical expenses. But that is about it, as far as I can tell.For a couple of years married, alimony is a bit of a stretch.

It has been written all over the internet that Kelis is very popular overseas, and has a great career there. She should not be broke. She may be frontin at her lawyers’ advice, or she may be so irresponsible with money, that she really is broke. Either way, that is not Nas’ problem.

She is the one who filed for divorce, so she should have thought about her living situation before doing that. She should have savings, and sell some of the jewelry, coats, etc.

Their situation is common of human beings when a marriage doesn’t work out. One spouse wants to receive a lot, and the other refuses to give an inch. They are unable to meet each other half way, so the judge will do it for them. All that matters is that the child’s needs are put first. The adults can take care of themselves. And it doesn’t sounds like her lights are about to be turned off, so she should broaden her perspective for the time being until things get sorted out.

I’m shocked that almost everyone is taking Nas’ side and calling Kelis all kinds of names. What you THINK you know about her might be the furthest thing from the truth. All we know for SURE is that she was married to Kelis, she is about to have their baby, and it doesn’t seem like she worked during the marriage. There are rumors he cheated, but who knows for sure.

She is entitled to receive alimony as well as child support, and she (and her child) should be able to live in a lifestyle that is comparible to his until she remarries. 1) He has tons of money. 2) She agreed to be his wife and promised til death do us part, as did he. Now she will be a divorcee and a single mom. She didn’t sign up for that. Maybe she could have married someone else, but she didn’t; she chose him.3) Just because he (allegedly) cheated does not mean she has to go back to eating Ramen noodles.

Marriage is a contract. If it’s true that he cheated, he has violated the terms of the contract. If he wants to play, he’s gotta pay. And shame on him if he didn’t get a prenup. I agree. It is obvious that people do not know what a marriage is about. They are use to separating $00.00 per week and their $1500.00 a month leased apartment.

During a divorce there are marital assets to be divided. The things that they acquired during their 5 year marriage had to be divided. If They do not have a prnuptial agreement then she is entitled to half, spusal support and child support. Kelis is not asking for much. Nas should stop trying to control Kelis by the purse strings. She is pregnant and does not need the extra strain. she is paying for half of the hospital bill. She could of asked for much more.Nas should man up.

If he has joint custody he still will have to pay child support. Umm, yeah! Kell appeared a gold digger in the OP posted yesterday and she still appears one in the same story today. Reread it 20 times and it won’t change perception. She isn’t entitled to half of anything unless she is in a community property state and even then there are ways to keep assets separate depending on the initial arrangements, etc. If Kellis is not “used to” being poor then she should be comfortable going back to her rich lifestyle without Nas money. She was accustomed to living a certain lifestyle for about what 25 or so years without Nas, then she should find herself feeling comfy back with that same as she had grown accustomed to for most of her life.
