Sanaa Lathan in today’s Page Six Magazine:

“I’m very lucky because I’m a working actress. There are a lot of white people who envy me. Who would love to be in my position!”

  • Ice Princess

    1???

  • think quick

Why is necessary to say whit people and not just people?

  • SEXI

    FIRST!

  • Ice Princess

    Sorry SEXI….

  • Ding

    Nappy headed ho……

  • amber86

Um ok @ Sanaa…now if someone white said that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would be screaming racism. Now it may be true but some things you should only say in your head…lol

  • Love

    **************HINT HINT***************

I guess it is easy being DADDY’S LITTLE GIRL!

  • Kevin

    What the f*ck Sanaa!

I’m sure Sanaa have had your fill of dealing with “White Hollywood’ but this statement will not help your cause.

Girl, you better keep your mouth shut or you will not see another script.

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ LOL

    YUM! YUM! I’m full.

  • Kevin

    @ Marquis de Sade,

What up? Yeah, I’m not sure why she believes “white people envy” her.

What white people? The white people who employ her D-list ass? Her white agent who gets her the scripts? The white prodcer(s) and directors who put her in their movies?

What the f*ck is she talking about.

And for the record, this is apparently a quote from her mounth, people.

  • kigali

    She is still beautiful.

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ amber86

Mad!?! Nawwwww. I’m mearly bored at work, and stoking the mad flames of ill-content. Btw, is that your real hair or that good indian human hair?

  • LOL

And by the way, her father Stan Lathan, is considered Hollywood royalty! That man broke down barriers behind the scenes, which is where the real money is.

  • amber86

definitely my real hair, not a fan of weave at all wore it once for prom and never will again

  • hmmmm…….

I don’t care one way or the other about the so called “quote,” Sanaa is a beautiful and talented actress.

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ LOL

Oh, stop being so morally superior. We’re talking about Sanaa Latham. One of the most uncharismatic actresses since Andie MacDowell.

  • Laila

    amber86 & LOL i have to co-sign with you 100%

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ Amber86

Ohhh goody. Can i run my cyber fingers through your long luxurious cyber strands? I promise not to yank or pull, unless you want me too.

  • Kevin

    @ amber86,

Man? At what? Sanaa’s stupid comment about white people’s envy of her?

I just asked a question about what white people is she referring to.

  • LOL

Marquis, what did I say about Sanaa? Other than her words were pulled out of context. And that her father is a pioneer.

I’m referring more to some of the miserable posters that seem to live for nothing but negativity. Sorry, but it’s a fact!

  • Ashb

saana is one of my fav actresses. she is beautiful and intelligent.

  • Kevin

    @amber86,

I meant to ask mad at what? Sorry for the typo.

Why don’t you tell me why you say that?

  • LOL

I notice when Kim K, and other non-black women who wear extensions, are featured on this site nada is said about their hair.

  • Kevin

    @ Laila,

    Co-sign to what? Bull sh*t?

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ LOL

Oh, what’s wrong with a little negativity? The public thrives on it. Positivity is only fun if you win the lotto…Other than that, let envy, avarice and sour grapes reign!

  • Ofrah Chopra

    this is what I got:

“I’m lucky because a lot of white people envy me”

  • amber86

    @ Marquis de Sade,

What up? Yeah, I’m not sure why she believes “white people envy” her.

What white people? The white people who employ her D-list ass? Her white agent who gets her the scripts? The white prodcer(s) and directors who put her in their movies?

What the f*ck is she talking about.

And for the record, this is apparently a quote from her mounth, people.

    ———————————————-

You asked questions but it seemed like her quote really pissed you off. That’s all…

  • amber86

lol @ marquis, sure you can pull it too…haha

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ amber86

Shouldn’t your last response be directed at Kevin?

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ amber86

The Sanaa response. Not the hair pulling. That’s for me.

  • amber86

yeah it was for him i just copied his comment it was for him, the hair pulling was all yours lol

  • serene

    what is she talking about….

  • Kevin

    @ amber86,

Get your responses directed to the right people amber.

Again, why would her quote piss me off?

Have you not read others quotes on here? Or have you strategically decided to target me and Marquis de Sade.

Again, and again, I only want to know why Sanaa feels that white people envy her? What’s this envy based on? Delusion?

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ Amber86

Gentle hair pulling is wayyy more fun than indexing pleadings and discovery.

  • Rock that Jaw

I don’t know what to think just yet. I did hear from my man that she’s difficult to work with….but that’s just hearsay. I don’t know what to think at this point.

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ LOL

Hey, it’s free commerce and capitalism at its’ finest. Ya’ gotta love the internet. The last bastion of free speech and expression.

  • amber86

I did at Kevin read the previous comments, jeez are you looking for an argument? You’re taking this to another level. I’m not attacking you or Marquis. Marquis and I are on a whole nothing topic now.

  • amber86

    Oh I know @ Marquis…lol

  • Narcissus

    “Marquis de Sade

    @ Amber86

Gentle hair pulling is wayyy more fun than indexing pleadings and discovery.”

*Smirk* If you’re going to take the name, Le Marquis, then do it the justice it deserves.

LOL@gentle hair pulling from someone with the moniker “Marquis De Sade”. Oh That’s rich.

  • Shootingstar

Don’t all actresses- regardless of race or ethnicity- want to be working actresses? She sounds like a straight-up idiot.

Plus, she’s working, but she’s not blowing anyone away with any oscar worthy performances. Everything she’s done except for her 2 minute role in “Blade” has been in FUBU productions.

  • Kevin

    @ amber86,

Okay so you and Marquis de Sade are on another topic. You still ain’t answered the question as to why you think I’m pissed off at Sanaa’s statement of white people being envious of her.

Never mind, maybe you can’t answer the question and I am not looking for a fight. Just wanted to know why you think I’m pissed off about some actress’ statement.

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ Narcissus

    Sydney, is that you?

  • Kevin

    @ Marquis de Sade,

LMFAO! Blood, got damn, I was thinkin’ the same thing.

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ Kevin

Yeah, Narcissus sarcasm and anger reeks of Sydney’s demeanor.

  • jojo

I’m pretty sure Angela Jolie is hating on her as we speak.

  • LOL

I don’t have to wonder. She finally told me, I simply had to remind her that I’ve known her for years_ no need to front. Lol.

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ Jojo

I’ll bet that Julia Roberts is pissed off too. She and Angelina was waiting on tooth and nails for that Alien vs. Predator role. That had Oscar written all over it.

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ Narcissus

Come on baby, don’t be shy. Come out and play. I won’t bite, unless you want me too.

  • jojo

    Marquis de Sade

    @ Jojo

I’ll bet that Julia Roberts is pissed off too. She and Angelina was waiting on tooth and nails for that Alien vs. Predator role. That had Oscar written all over it.

LOL!!! you ain’t never lying. Did that movie (Alien vs. Predator) win like 5 NAACP awards?

  • Kevin

    @ Marquis de Sade,

She still hasn’t answered my question though.

  • Kevin

    @ jojo,

You ain’t never lyin bro. Sanaa sounds like a spoiled little brat who’s mad that she ain’t won sh*t.

If she’s looking for accolades from the American Film Institute, she’ll be waiting for a minute.

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ jojo

Knowin the NAACP Awards, it could have. LOL! I hope not though. That would be an all time low for them. I vaguely remember them giving Flex a best acting nomiation for his revelatory comic performance in HOMEBOYS FROM OUTTASPACE on UPN, about 10 years ago. I think he lost to Martin Lawrence for MARTIN though.

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ Kevin

I think Sydney is giving us the silent treatment. I wish she’d come back. It would be like old times.

  • Built2Bully

Sanaa is a character actress, she has had maybe three or four roles that she was the lead and that is pretty good compared to alot of actresses in hollywood. The comment was made in the sense that she hasn’t had the success of A Halle Berry or Nicole Kidman and she was saying (not a quote) that being an actor in hollywood isn’t about being A MOVIE STAR BUT A BLACK WORKING ACTOR, WHO CAN ACT… COMPARED TO WHITE MOVIE STARS WHO CAN’T ACT YET MOVIE STARS NON THE LESS. The white people, (and again she said no names… I AM) ALICIA SILVERSTONE, ALL THE CAST MEMBERS FROM “FRIENDS” WHOM HAS YET HAD ANY SUCCESSFUL FILM CAREERS OTHER THAN JENNIFER ANISTON, WHO ONLY HAS TWO SUCCESSFUL FILMS. DEBRA MESSING, SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR, I COULD GO ON BUT WHY….. So, I think she meant no harm or ill intent towards white actors just wanted to be understood that she is very comfortable with her career and choices that she has made… and someone said ealier SOMETHING TO THE EFFECT THAT WHITE DIRECTORS, PRODUCERS AND THE SUCH CASTING HER…. THAT IS A NON ISSUE WITH HER BECAUSE HER FATHER IS POWERFUL OUT HERE IN HOLLYWOOD AND COULD EASLIY GET HER ROLES FOR HER, YET SHE HASN’T NOR WON’T LET NEPOTISM BE A FACTOR IN HER CAREER.

  • Kevin

    @ Marquis de Sade,

I believe you’re right. Notice though when we band together and call all these females on their sh*t, they pull a Houdini.

  • amber86

Jeez Kevin I leave for a minute and your still talking about it. This comment just seems like you were mad “What white people? The white people who employ her D-list ass? Her white agent who gets her the scripts? The white prodcer(s) and directors who put her in their movies?

What the f*ck is she talking about.”

Yes you asked the questions but you still seem really annoyed. If you weren’t you could’ve simply said no just like Marquis did and that would’ve been the end.

  • Kevin

    @ Built2Bully,

Remember though, it took Halle a good minute to win an Oscar and what role did she win that Oscar for?

A role that called for her to get f*cked in the ass by a white man who ran over and killed her son and for her to turn on her husband.

All aside, the truth is the moving going audience don’t want to see someone like Sanaa.

They want Angelina, Julia, et al because that’s the way it is.

  • Kevin

    @amber86,

Girl, ain’t nobod annoyed about this punk sh*t. What’s a trip is that someone like Sanaa would make a comment about white people when those very people who I’m sure she’s referring to employ her ass.

Gotta be careful what you say to the media, that’s all girl.

Nothing on here is that serios to me. Unless you come at me raw.

  • what?

Angie’s last few movies bombed at the box office. So try again.

An Aside – Halle begged for that role. So did Vanessa Williams. They wanted Angie Bassett to play that part, she said after reading the script she found it degrading to black people, black women in particular.

  • amber86

Oh ok glad to see we’re on the same page now.

  • Black Barbie

It wasn’t too long ago she was tryin’ to keep Pauletta from whippin’ her a$$ over Denzel. Envy her? Some people should just sit and be pretty.

  • what?

    @ Grace, Sanaa’s engaged!

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ Kevin

Oh c’mon Kev. Amber is ok. She didn’t come at us raw…Besides, look at those pretty eyes. You just want to hold her hand and buy her an icecold glass of strawberry lemonade and gaze at her smile.

  • what?

Oh yes, so have Juila’s. Her movies have been tanking the past couples also. Includung the one she did a couple months ago. Anyone remember the name of it? It came out less than 2 months ago, anyone at all?

  • Jbaby

I do not know her statement just sounds ignorant. I was trying to look at it from all types of angles but just not making any sense at to me all. Okay, just because your a working actress doesn’t mean just white people in general envy.

  • amber86

    lol…thank you @ Marquis…I really am ok @ Kevin…lol :)

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ What

Yeah, that maybe true, but in comparison, Sanaa is a never was, as oppose to Angelina and Julia. It’s all about the bucks.

  • bree

    black*

  • dani

LMAO at Sanaa I agree that we shouldn’t jump to conclusions because we don’t know what the interviewer asked her but this statement without any background information alone sounds ignorant and trivial. Anyways it’s good to see this post didn’t turn out to be the noraml gender and racial debates that tend to become too personal and intense.

  • kigali

    @ Kevin,

    Dude, let go!

  • what?

Kevin are you googling Angelina’s and Julia’s last blockbuster movie roles?

  • dani

Sanaa, Nia, and Gabrielle Union have never taken challenging roles especially Gabrielle and their excuses are tiring. You have to hustle for yours and you ahve to prove to people that you are a versatile talented thespian to gain respct in Hollywood. The same old sterotypical black women roles get old. I want to see a black film that has a challenging plot like “Eve’s Bayou” because all these black films are too predictable and it’s bad enough that these black thespian choose these same roles.

  • Built2Bully

@SMILEY FACE, NO I DO AGREE WITH YOU ON SARAH’S TELEVISION CAREER, HOWEVER THE TRANSITION TO FILM PROVES TO BE DIFFICULT IS SOME, NOT ALL, SITUATIONS. AND I THINK THAT WE PUT SO MUCH ON THE LEAD OF A FILM THAT JUST BEING A WORKING ACTOR CONSITENTLY SHOULD BE THE FOCUS. THOUGH I DO AGREE THAT HER TELEVISION CAREER WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL.

@KEVIN, YES HALLE WON THE OSCAR FOR A ROLE THAT EVEN MRS. BASSETT TURNED DOWN. HALLE’S CAREER CAN AND WILL BE DEFINED BY THE ROLES THAT SHE WENT AFTER, NO MATTER IF THE ROLE WAS WRITTEN FOR WHITE OR BLACK. IF YOU GOOGLE HALLE’S CAREER 70 PERCENT OF HER CAREER IS PLAYING ROLES SIMILAR TO THAT. AND TO ME THAT IS DISAPPOINTING. FROM “JUNGLE FEVER”, “LOSING ISIAH”, “QUEEN”, “MONSTER’S BALL”, “THE RICH MAN’S WIFE” YET I BELIEVE THAT HALLE SEES IT DIFFERENTLY THAN OTHER BLACK ACTRESSES AND SANAA AND HALLE ARE VERY CLOSE FRIENDS AND I KNOW THEY SEE IT DIFFERENTLY… AND YOUR RIGHT BOX OFFICE NUMBERS PROVE YOU RIGHT ABOUT JOLIE AND ROBERTS… AND THIS PAST FALL AND THE BOX OFFICE NUMBERS AND OSCAR NODS ARE SOMETHING WE BLACK PEOPLE IN THE INDUSTRY HAVE TO REALLY LOOK AT. NOT JUST MAKING MONEY AND BEING CELEBS BUT MAKING ENTERTAINING GREAT MOVIES AND FILMS…

  • Kevin

    @what?

No I am not goggling over Angelina or Julia. I’m merely stating a fact that there is a reason why these actresses command the salaries they do.

    They’re white!

  • rashard

    @ everyone

yo since when has sanaa been one of the baddest out?? she was aight in love & basketball but now she a dime. id wife that.

  • lovely and amazing

    @ JoJo

    LOL!!

  • Kevin

    @Built2Bully,

I like you. You make sense. Almost like you’re in the business and know exactly what you’re talking about.

Your worth in Hollywood is determined by a myriad of factors.

    1. Gender

    2. Race

    3. Whether the gender and race combined will make money

    4. Popularity with the world as the audience.

And whether your last movie box office receipts are worth the investment of another movie.

After Aliens vs. Predator – I can’t believe Sanaa got anothr script in her hands.

  • Marquis de Sade

According to the producers of Monster Ball, the role was never offered to Angela Basset. The script was floating around and Angela read it, but that was about it. Angela coming out and stating that she would never take that kind of role, was her being catty, due to Halle winning the Oscar. Angela could’ve easily came out and revealed that she turned down the role months prior to the Oscars, but for some reason, decided to wait until the day after Halle won the Oscar.

  • Kevin

    @ 100%

For real. Again, when you get quoted by the media with some sh*t like what she supposedly said, there is likely a backlash in the career.

    Watch your mouth Sanaa.

  • memchee

well now, someone is really feelin’ theirself.

If Nia Long would work as half as hard as she could, we probably wouldn’t even know sanaa.

  • Kevin

I’m just hoping that there aren’t people trying to compare Sanaa to Halle because there is no comparison on any level. At all!!!

  • Marquis de Sade

As far as saleries go, Julia has had more B.O. hits than misses. She deserves her salarie. Angelina on the other hand, well a good agent and P.R. goes a long way sometimes. Nicole Kidman is another example of an actress who is notoriously overpayed and employed for that matter.

  • Ofrah Chopra

how do you guys get those pictures in your avatar?

  • Kevin

    @memchee,

You hit the nail right on the f*ckin head. Although, Nia is not a box office draw by any stretch of the imagination.

  • what?

@ Kevinn, I said GOOGLING NOT GOGGLING!

As for Sanaa, money won’t be an issue for her. She’s not from humble means like Gabby, Nia, wtc. And that fine ass NFL dude she’s engaged to doesn’t look like he’s hurting for funds either.

  • amber86
  • Kevin

    @ Marquis de Sade,

Man you ain’t lyin about Nicole Kidman. What the f*ck?

Angelina’s rogue behavior and fascination with blood and tats make people interested in her.

Julia, although her break out role was that of a prostitute, has an endearing persona and Hollywood exploited that.

  • Kevin

    @what?

    My bad.

  • amber86

By the way Sanaa’s man was one of the 20 eligible Bachelors they featured in an issue of Ebony. Damn, I knew I should’ve sent him and email. Jeez…lol

  • what?

Marquis pass that info to Halle becuz she herself said that Angela was offered the role before her. And I heard that info before the Halle won the Oscar, from my inside source vh1.

  • tj

Okay…. well duh. I mean if you are an actress who gets jobs a lot of people want to be you… I’m not sure what that person’s race has to do with it. Is she trynda say she’s just as good as any white person… It’s a damn shame she needed a movie role to tell her that.

  • kigali

    @Amber

    Thanks for the link.

  • Kevin

    @kigali,

If you choose to use the link Gravatar to post a photo, please make sure that the photo you use is a photo of you, for real. That’s if you’re a female.

I want to see some fine females on here for once.

  • Tyrone M. Wild

when will we stop measuring ourselves against white people??? they don’t validate us!!

  • amber86

I’m right here Kevin…lol…j/k I’m really not conceited…however I would like to see some attractive men on here…Where’s your pic?

  • Built2Bully

@Kevin, yeah I know after ALIEN V. PREDATOR, I didn’t think that she would get any good not great scripts. I don’t think she will be getting any action scripts anytime soon…

While Julia was the highest paid at 20 mil per… REESE WITHERSPOON IS TAKING THIS CITY OVER MAKING 20 MILLION A PICTURE PLUS 5 POINTS ON THE BACK END. MOST MOVIE STARS WANT FRANCHISES BECAUSE THATS AUTOMATIC MULTI- MILLIONS, KEANU REEVES GOT 20- 25 MILLION ALONE OFF THE MATRIX FRANCHISE… TOM CRUISE M:III… AND WILL SMITH IS IN TALKS ABOUT I AM LEGEND PREQUEL… I THINK THAT SANAA WANTED SOMETHING LIKE THAT WITH A-V-P AND HALLE WITH “CATWOMAN”. HOLLYWOOD CAN BE VERY FORGIVING WHEN IT COMES TO FLOPS AT THE BOX OFFICE… YET THERE COMES A POINT WHEN YOU SALARY CAN AND WILL FALL FROM 20 TO 10 MILLION (HELL I’LL TAKE THAT) BUT SANAA IS DOING WELL SHE CAN AND HAS MADE ANYWHERE FROM 850,000 TO 1MILLION 1.5 MILLION FOR HER FILMS… SO SHE IS DOING WELL… BUT WE NEED TO MAKE BETTER MOVIES AND FILMS.. AND THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO… MOVIES= SUMMER BOX OFFICES…. FILMS= OSCAR NOMS… AND IN MY OPINION JADA PICKETT SMITH MAY BE THE MOST TALENTED ACTRESS BLACK OR WHITE OUT THERE YET SHE IS BEHIND THE SCENE WITH PRODUCING AND DIRECTING… IF YOU LOOK BACK AT ALL THE FILMS SHE HAS BEEN IN SHE NAILS THE CHARACTER. AND YES!!!! NICOLE KIDMAN IS HIGHLY OVERPAYED….

  • Built2Bully

@KEVIN, YES I WORK IN THE INDUSTRY… I HAVE BEEN UNEMPLOYEED OF THE FEW MONTHS BECAUSE OF THE WRITERS STRIKE… AND I TOOK A BIG FINANCIAL HIT BUT I’M SINGLE AND NO KIDS AND I HAVE FRIENDS WHOM ARE MARRIED AND KIDS AND THE HAVE LOST THIER HOMES, INSURANCE AND BENEFITS SO I AM JUST HAPPY THAT IT IS OVER AND WE CAN GET BACK TO WORK…LOL…

  • Kevin

    @Built2Bully,

    You know your sh*t.

Speaking of Reece, yep another actress with an endearing personality.

That sells! And her body ain’t all that either.

I’m kind of surprised Jennifer Aniston with the same sort of endearing persona isn’t the same caliber as Julia, Reece, and Angelina.

  • Lili

You know, Sanaa is an intelligent woman, and I doubt she’d say something that conceited and blatant; I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt and guessing that might have been taken out of context.

However, if they quoted her correctly, that was one of the dumbest things a (Black) actress could say! And Page Six Mag is the insert for the Sunday NY Times. I don’t think she’s at the point where she can flap her gums that loosely with White publications. I mean, not unless she doesn’t mind loosing those crossover roles.

On a side note, I’m not trying to hate at all, but I never completely understood Sanaa’s appeal. She certainly has a great physique and is quite glamorous, but that purple pic above is the first pic I’ve seen of her that really, really made me see how pretty she is. Fabulous photo. Work it out girl.

  • http://angrygayblackCanadianman.com Orville

I don’t believe Sanaa made that statement it must be taken out of context. Sanaa Lathan is a solid actress this must be some unfortunate mistake or typo error.

  • Marquis de Sade

Well in all fairness, black actresses doesn’t have the luxury of choosing meaty roles, due to them being race specific. Most producers are of the mindset that female roles are supposed be given to youthful waifish white girls. Within the next few years, you’ll see Julia, Angelina, Nicole all vying for the few matronly roles available for theatrical movies…And if you think i’m wrong, look at what’s happening to Glenn Close, Kyra Sedwick, Holly Hunter. They, because of their age are doing episodic television, due to the dearth of available roles for mature actresses over 40…Now when you factor in the ethnicity, that makes it even more difficult to find work after you reach 40. Halle, being the lone exception, but her time is short, unless she can prove that she has B.O. viability – Which so far she hasn’t.

  • But Of Course

One would think afterall these years there would be a such thing as a major black production studio to remedy some of these problems that face black actors, writers, and producers. Take note of Bollywood sheesh.

  • tintin

i refuse to believe she said this.

sanaa would never say someting like this. the magazine quoted her wrong and she ain’t working that much

  • Kevin

    @ Marquis de Sade,

Not only that but audiences (most are of the white persuasion) don’t want to see black females in movies.

Now black actors are a different story because a lot of the roles are about gansta sh*t, cop sh*t, drug sh*t or are comedies.

Def Comedy Jam is even losing its touch.

And Eddie put stupid into comedies and I can’t stand to watch stupid sh*t because Eddie or Chris Rock or Martin’s in it.

That’s why Denzel is up there with Tom, Brad, Bruce and Harrison even Robin and Mel.

  • Lili

    Ana Paula

    @Lili

How can that be taken out of context? Are you an undercover politician because that is what most people say after making an ass of themselves

^^^LOL No dear, that’s just simple jargon that is thrown around, and most know that.

Now…taken out of context: Maybe she was misquoted. She could have preceded that line with a phrase stating that she is a black actress who is consistently getting roles, while she knows plenty of white actresses who aren’t and that may bother them.

    I don’t know; I wasn’t there.

My point was that up to this moment, I’d never her such a stupid comment leave Sanna’s mouth because she is quite intelligent and represents herself rather well. There is a first time for everything, but she could have been misquoted; that line could have been taken out of context.

  • Lili

    *I’d never heard

  • Kevin

    @tintin,

It’s a quote! My guess is she’s needs some PR. There is nothing worse in Hollywood than being irrelevant.

  • Marquis de Sade

Yes, but Bollywood is regional, ie, only sucessful in certain parts of the middle east and Europe. The few black production companies right now are only putting out low budget straight to dvd productions. As far as theatrical releases, its’ more difficult to find distribution, due to the lack of overseas B.O. viability. The only black actor working today, who has a consistant international track record is Will Smith. Hell, even Denzel Washington doesn’t have overseas B.O. viability. That’t one of the reasons that American Gangster had such a hard time being produced during the onset of production about 3 years ago. The only reason, it was finally made, was the producers Imagine was able convince Russell Crowe to come in as Co-Lead, thus convincing Universal to pony up the 100 million dollars to produce the movie. Russell Crowe has the international B.O. viability that Denzel Washingtion doesn’t.

  • Kevin

    @ Marquis de Sade,

Good information. And I can totally see why the movie was finally made.

They brought on a white boy! That makes perfect sense.

And it truly is about the universal appeal.

And again, this is a testament to why a lot of black actresses aren’t B.O draws.

  • But Of Course

I firmly believe that regional success would have lead to bigger things. If the inititave was taken 25-30 yrs ago, you mean to tell me we couldn’t have carved out our place in this industry? I mean part of the reason black actors don’t have universal appeal is because we’re so seldom seen on screen in lead roles.

  • Kevin

    @V

Cassie’s 15 minutes are up soon. Nothing associated wth P.Diddy makes it through.

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ But of course

I think that all started when Richard Pryor was given some start-up money by (i forget which studio) to produce black themed movies to be supervised by Jim Brown…But due to Richard’s drug abuse, nothing came of it. Supposedly, Jim Brown was set to begin production a black themed sci-fi movie, but the studio intervened, due to the thinking at the time, that an audience for an all black sci-fi movie would bomb. Jim Brown subsequently complained to Richard, who was drugged out, and during a heated exchanged, fired Jim. A missed Opportunity.

  • Kevin

    @But of Course,

My belief is that is more than that. You have to ask why that is the case?

    It’s simple.

    White folks aren’t interested!

    @Marquis de Sade,

You taken it back bruh. You got some damn good points and this sh*t is so true.

  • Whatchaknoaboutdat?

I hope that she didn’t really say that because she may be a working actress but she ain’t working that dam much… she gets a role er’ now and then but not enough to be cocky with it.

    She’s cool tho…

  • N3w0rl3@ns

im white….and sorry, sanaa…i can’t say that i really envy you.

  • kigali

    @Marquis,

Bollywood refers to South Asian cinema not Middle Eastern. Most of them suck by the way. They actually make more money than Hollywood films.

The only good movies to come out of the Middle East that are any good are Iranian films. The irony is that the limits that are put on the films by the government, make them more thoughtful and substantive.

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ Kigali

By more money, do mean profit margin and (or) overall gross?

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ Kigali

Oops! My bad. When i think of Bollywood, for some reason, i think of Hadjis and Osamas. It’s just my “UGLY AMERICAN” ignorance and knowledge (or a lack there of) of different cultures and geographical origins :o )

  • But Of Course

I thought Bollywood was exclusive to India?

Kevin, who cares about white people? If blacks produces movies were able to turn a profit, mainstream would’ve come running? Now I know the musice and movies industries aren’t exactly the same animal, but the fad known as rap has landed black faces in arenas. Many in non english speaking countries.

Marquis, good inf. Lol, maybe sci-fi wasn’t the place to start though.

  • DomiX

    I guess….good for her.

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ But of Course

Hey, you gotta give Jim credit for at least tryin’ to swing for the rafters LOL!

  • But Of Course

I guess Marquis, I guess. Lol. Tim Ried and his wife had a studio lot down in VA, don’t think that lasted too long. But what about those power houses like Denzel, Will, and annoying ass Spike Lee? Where are they in this equation? Hmmm?

Damn I just realized how typos my last comment had. But yall know what I meant though!

  • anchored

@sanaa in the words of devin “the dude” sanaa “say what the fuc you want to say.” the elders have died for this right honey

  • bcan

okay, now wasn’t her, nia & gabrielle just up in essence talking about how there were not enough roles for black actresses in hollywood? I’m confused. but i’m sure she didn’t say this…this was taken out of context

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ But of Course

I think that Will is making a little leadway, but it is all about Distribution and Marketing. To my knowledge, the only movies Will has produced with B.O. success, has been the movies that he starred in. The only other movie, that he Jada produced through is Overbrook production company was The Seat Filler, starring Duane Martin and Kelly Rowland from Destiny Child. – And that went straight to DVD.

  • Kevin

    @realblkman,

I think Boosip didn’t want her her anymore with regard to amber86.

  • Laila

i think it’s all black actors/actresses that don’t get the credit/money they deserve. American Gangster and I Am Legend were two of the best movies of 2007, for their CONTENT, but they did not get recognized by the Oscars, but yet a terrible movie like Juno did? i can promise you that if there weren’t black men in those roles they would have been snatching up some Oscars.

Also, i think the reason why black actors/actresses are so underpaid is because their movies only reach one audience, whereas other movies go international. since the movies are targeted at blacks, that’s the only audience they will get, which doesn’t give them too much $. I agree a lot of these actresses like Reese are overpaid, but her movies reach larger audience as well.

  • realblkman

You can disregard my question earlier. I see she signed out earlier.

  • kigali

    @Marquis,

Bollywood refers to movies from South Asian not the Middle East. Its popular where ever South Asians are which is everywhere. Bollywood grosses more money than Hollywood.

The only good cinema that comes from the Middle East is Iran. Ironically the lack of totally free expression forces film makers to make films that are more substantive.

  • Kevin

It appears that those in the music business (i.e., Beyonce, Will Smith, Ice-T, Ice Cube, Mos Def, Pac, et al have found some success in television and movies.

Even comics Pryor, Cosby, Murphy, Red Foxx, Rock those silly ass Wayans and Chappelle have found success after their stand up acts.

But again, these are all men.

These artists have discovered the formula for longevity and that has eluded the black actress with the exception of Halle and Queen Latifah.

  • anchored

only movies blacks can make that’ll hit the big screen are the ones denzel and oprah have there paws on. no indi film can make lead way unless it’s violent or funny ahh. where’s our “notebook” or some beautiful love story, without any indecentcies ya know of any let me know i’ll netflix it now

  • realblkman

@ Kev thanks I was just wondering becuz she was the only one with a real pic up that’s why I asked.

  • Laila

music success seems to be a lot easier to get than movies, because if you’re someone like Beyonce, Ciara, Rihanna, Keyshia Cole,Jennifer Hud, Mary J. etc(plus all the old school legends) your music can reach any audience, and when all else fails, sex sells.

  • kigali

    @Marquis,

Could the success of Will Smith over Denzel be that Will Smith does Action movies that will always have a more international appeal? That having been said, the inability of black actors to be accepted in the mainstream or the international market hasnt stopped hip hop from being an international phenonemna. Strange innit?

  • kigali

    @Marquis,

Hip hop is way more black than Hollywood is white.

  • But Of Course

Queen Latifah started off on the music side. Her success as an actress puzzles me at times. Lol, funny thing is, nowadays, she can’t give her albums away.

The Seat Filler? In the words of someone’s auntie: They betta stop!

  • Laila

@ kigali i actually have to agree with that last one, hip hop is more black than hollywood is white, i can’t name too many successful white rappers besides eminem lol. At least for hollywood we can name more than one or two blacks that have made it and have been accepted.

  • tj

The problem with black films is that they are straight fubu productions. They have no universal appear and often contain “insider” content that is completley lost on the general public. Asking why black films don’t break out into the mainstream is like asking why teen films don’t. They are both made marketed and critiqued by niche markets and targetted audience structures

  • But Of Course

    ^^^ LOL

  • anchored

I hope that sanaa votes for Obama. and not the vote stealer Hil-liar. damn shame NY is trying to play the brotha.

  • Kevin

    @But of Course,

I agree. Queen Latifah taken as a serious actress will never happen unless she loses more weight and has a role like Angela Bassett did in Waiting to Exhale.

  • But Of Course

Last message was to Ana’s comment.

Kigali, he’s no worse than the red dots I worked with who openly ask me things like: do all black men carry guns?

  • But Of Course

    @ Kevin

Queen Latifah is an Oscar and SAG award nominee, she just won a Golden Globe. Has major endorsements deals. I think her acting career overshadows many of these “real” actresses. I mean shedding some lbs certainly wont hurt, but I think she’s done pretty well for herself. I mean she’s not trying to be the siren, so pencil thin she doesn’t need to be. I was just saying that I’m puzzled on how she managed to accomplish all of this.

  • kai

In my best “Becky” voice: “LIKE OMG, WHITE PEOPLE JUST LOVE ME LIKE I AM SUCH A NATURAL HARDWORKER, LIIKE, IM THE BEST NIGGERESS IN THE WORLD”

She sounds like a cunt. Why would she even come out of mouth like this to make her seem as stupid as ever…?

  • tj

Has anyone else noticed that black “actors” and “actresses” are usually former rappers. While white actors are former theater and television stars. They basically throw black people into any role they feel like putting them in without caring a lick. But white actors have to be on point. These white actors have been studying for years. That’s why I love Angela Bassett, Courtney Vance, Cicely Tyson, Denzel, and Forrest because they really are ACTORS they have studied the craft. Don’t give me TI and Common. You don’t see rock and roll stars in serious films. I mean if they want to be in “Next Friday of Next month” or whatever nonsense that’s fine with me but why do they need to be in an otherwise serious oscar worthy film. Learn how to act somewhere else. (taking a breath now)

  • Kevin

    @Ana Paula,

Quick ass question, are you Clayton Bixby?

  • Kevin

    @Ana Paula,

Since you ask, are you also Sydney?

  • But Of Course

LOL @ “Next Friday of Next month”. And I could see them doing that mess too! Hell they made a “Big Momma’s House 2″.

  • yes

y’d they cut her up like that, her waist aint that narrow, got her look all disproportioned

  • Good Gosh

some really great critiques on this thread, good post guys. Bottom line, black actresses are just not in demand, not for leads anywayz. Hollywood doesn’t want them and while it can be said that the consumer has an enormous amount of influence over what comes out, producers and movie execs still have been known to push the envelope.

Its not like major film houses haven’t backed ground breaking films before. For example who would have thought that (and their are many)Columbia would have backed guess who’s comming to dinner, a 1967 Sydney Poitier movie (I think it won an oscar too) that was about interracial marriage. It obviously came out during a time when the civil rights movement was still very active and still had a great deal of opposition by the white general public. It was contraversial but then again that’s what sells.

Kinda makes you wonder why there haven’t been any ‘real’ ground breaking films with roles specifically fashioned for black actresses. The fact that it would be too contraversial is not the answer because that would only be all the more reason to make such a film. Perhaps its that the most prevasive stereotypes about black women actually prevent such a role from being believable to major audiences, among other things ofcourse. I’d like to know what some other people think.

  • Jack Tripper

If Sanaa’s father was not who he was she might be as employed as the whities. I mean she has had some DECENT NOT STELLAR roles.

Sanaa just be happy being employed regardless of who you are up against just be happy geesh!

  • Jack Tripper

I mean she might NOT be employed…my bad…

  • tj

    @ Good Gosh

I can think of a number of african american novels that would make fantastic films (the known world, the polished hoe, and the coldest winter ever come to mind) but when they option black novels of high caliber they put out a lot of money on the front end to purchase the rights then the cost of developing the project starts to get to high and there’s no precedent for extremely successful African American literary adaptations. Ultimately the studios see such projects as too much of a risk. Therefore stellar African American films have to be original screenplays whereas the top mainstream films are adaptations. IT really makes a big difference in terms of depth of character and piercing dialogue.

  • lightskinblackwoman

i think she told the truth. I’m tired of whites hate in on black because of our beauty and have more skin tones then any one black women do thats why we wont be seen.

  • Sydney

Oh, and, Marquis, can you pull my hair? It’s all mine, dahling. LMAO

@AMBER…AS A WHITE I DON’T FEEL OFFENDED, I MEAN RACE IS NOT REALLY THAT OF A PROBLEM TO US AS IT IS TO YOU OR BLACK PPL, HOWEVER BECAUSE I HAVE FRIENDS WHOM ARE BLACK AND BEING CULTURALLY KNOWLEDGEABLE WITH BLACK PEOPLE AND THEIR HISTORY I CAN UNDERSTAND WHERE SHE IS COMING FROM!

  • Candy Barr

I agree she didn’t need to bring race into it . . . And what was the last movie she made? I have seen her in a couple, but the last one was out years ago.

  • C.C.

    She just sounds stupid.

  • Richard

This quote was probably taken out of context. They probably asked her if she envied white actresses.

This just sounds wrong because After her last movie nobody envies her.

  • JaliliMaster

98% of the people who posted on this story are idiots. I am one of the few with any common sense!

  • boot

i can think of a lot of low down white trailer park white trash that would love to be in sanaa’s shoes!

@ light skinned black woman, you are unfortunately exceedingly ignorant about the history of the slaves, 99% of them who were from sub saharan africa, and as such negroid….. the lightening of the blacks in america came from nothing else but interbreeding with the whites! An it was usually unwanted sex imposed upon black women by the white men! Please learn your bloody history

Sanaa rocks… she’s just as good an acctress as any of those scrawny looking white women that are supposedly top actresses! Go Sanaa

  • http://angrygayblackCanadianman.com Orville

Wait a second have people forgotten about the HBO film Life Support? Queen Latifah just won a Golden Globe and a SAG Award for her DRAMATIC ACTING. Queen Latifah should do more drama I agree but unlike some rappers she actually paid her dues. Queen had her own hit TV show Living Single in the 1990s and worked very hard for her success.

Also the people bashing Sanaa, Gabrielle, and Nia Long seem to ignore the issue of gender. Black men have it easier then black women in Hollywood because they are MALE not FEMALE. Women do have it harder in Hollywood. Even white women complain that the scripts aren’t challenging enough. Maybe the problem is the screenwriters aren’t being creative enough? Or maybe the Hollywood studios are not green lighting challenging films for black women?

  • Lovely Queen

I don’t think she meant it that way. I think she meant to emphasize that she is doing really well for a black female actress. It was still a bad choice of words though.

  • Sydney

    @ Kevin

Hi, I’m off today, so I was up late last night and decided to look on the site and was very surprised to see my name brought up since I had not posted on here since last year (no lie). I was even more suprised to see you and Marquis asking other posters if they were me; I don’t have anything to do with those people going sideways at you. I don’t even recognize how the names on here now — it’s a totally different site.

I’ve actually been visiting mostly news/political blogs in my spare time now since I’ve been caught up in the election buzz. I’m an ardent Obama supporter :)

    Take care :)

Re:”pick a role” Ohh just go out there and pick a role, see if that gets you hired.

Could “white actresses” have been stated in the question and she just responded in kind?

Hollywood is a horrible place, and things get twisted up really bad there.
