25 year-old twin brothers, Keyontyli and Taleon Goffney, were arrested last week in Philly for being behind a string of break-ins and robberies in the Tri-State area. Ok, so what’s the catch? The twins do gay porn…together. Some gay, incestous porn. That’s some sick ish for real.

I can’t believe I’m about to share my pesonal life (well, ex-personal life) with you and the rest of the world (people, who I know nothing about)…but here it is.
Okay, I was raised in a Christian household. My mother was and still is a powerful woman of God. Me and my sisters were in church just about every day (not literally). She raised us with morals and values that are based on God’s Word. We knew right from wrong and the consequences of our decisions.
I said all of that to say this. Do you think it was my mother’s fault that once I got out of her house that I made stupid decisions? Is it my mothers fault that I used to steal? Is it my mothers fault that I have 4 kids (3 with a man I was with for 8 years, and my baby has a separate father)? Is it my mothers fault that I have a drug conviction? Is it my mothers fault that I was a “Ride or Die B***h – Rolling with the rough riders”? No, it’s not her fault. It’s my fault because she did her job as a mother. I just didn’t listen. It’s just like the old saying, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink it.”
I just don’t think it’s fair to blame all parents because of how their children turn out. If it’s one thing I regret about the bad decisions I made, it’s hurting my mother because I know for a long time she blamed herself for my actions. She would always ask what was it…if it was something she did or didn’t do. If it was something she said or didn’t say. It was not her fault. It was mine.

Anywho, I’ve heard that the age of accountability is 12 or 13. But to me, I think you should be accountable for your actions when you know right from wrong of that particular action. For instance, my 1 year old loves to bite. When he first bit me, I laughed it off because it really took me off guard. However, I did tell him, “No, no.” He did it for a while and I would keep telling him no, no. One day his brother took a gl***** from him that he had gotten off the table. In the case of white homes, the kids father, divorced or not are still in their lives and for the most part has a say in their rearing. Blacks has the lowest rate of two parent unit homes of only 38%. You have to ask yourself, of that remaining 62%, how many of those children have actually met their biological father? I know a lot of the white homes you speak of that have the fathers in the home. And from what I’ve witnessed, more often times than not, the mother and father are sleeping in two different rooms. The father (usually)is coming in waaaaay after work hours because of late business meetings that turn out to actually be dates with a co-worker (commiting adultery). The wife (usually) is so lonely and upset that she never sees her husband because he’s working late hours to provide for his family so that they have everything they want and need that she finds comfort in another man and commits adultery herself. Hmmmm…what kind of message is that sending to the children? These same white families remain together because they say they don’t want to be a statistic. So they decide to stay in unhealthy marriages for the kids sake or to avoid being the talk of the town. Now, what happens to these children being brouht up in these unhappy two family homes? Do you have any statistics on that? Does anybody every do a study on the pros and cons of these type families?

It’s a hard call cause you are just giving me the surface story. You mention how she raised you w/ God’s Word but I believe you hafta mix that w/ the word of real life experience. You also say you “knew right from wrong and the consequences of our decisions.” But by what you go on to say, it doesn’t seem like you cared about right or wrong or the consequences of your decisions.
Also, you mention that “she did her job as a mother. I just didn’t listen.” I find that to be contradictory, because if she had done her job you WOULD have listened. I don’t just tell my 2 year old son that he can’t say or do certain things, I make sure he listens and understands me. And furthermore, the fact that your mother is blaming herself tells me that somewhere along the line she might have felt like she could have done more but she didn’t.
A teacher can tell you that 2+2=4, but if (s)he doesn’t explain it and help you understand why it equals to 4 then you can’t say (s)he’s done her job. So your mom might have told you about right and wrong and the consequences, but maybe she feels that she didn’t go that extra step in making sure you really understood why. Feel me?

I’m more concerned with the big picture, than the minutia of typical husband and wife dysfunctions. Are the kids provided with proper housing, 3 meals, proper education and appropriate discipline? If a kid has those basic tools, then 9 times out of 10, they stand a fighting chance to become a productive citizen of society. Are there exceptions to the rule? Of course! Know one goes through life without a little damage or eccentricities caused by divorce or whatever.
Parents can be too rigid and strict. When parents are too strict you get children who are rebellious. Being strict or authoritarian as they call, it can be harmful to children or adolescents social and emotional growth and development. I blame these guys upbringing. There was definately something going on in these guys home that screwed them up. As an intern at the Department of Human Services Children and Families Unit I saw alot of incestuous things. I will never look at children and families the same. You never know what goes on behind closed doors. They are a product of their enviroment. Someone probably made them make out with each other as kids or one could have been gay and preyed on the other. There are young kids who are sexual offenders. They have to be separated from their siblings because of their potential to involve them as well. I feel sorry for these dudes because someone has screwed them up, literally.

Again, I find fault in the statements you make, “If you spend your time hangin out with thugs…” shouldn’t you as a parent be aware of who your child is hanging out with? And if you, as a child, are disrespecting your parents, then that is a clear indication that you are NOT doing your job as a parent.
My belief is that kids don’t just start cussin’ their parents at 14. I have a 2 year old and I see lil’ things he does now that if I don’t correct them can snowball into more serious things as he gets older. But at the same time I try to be a fair parent. You’re right, at 14 you shouldn’t be beating your kids…but you also shouldn’t just walk away if you’re telling your 2-3 year old to do something and they’re yelling “NO!”

I guess we’re gonna have to agree to disagree on this one. I think it’s insane for a person to be raised to know right from wrong…does wrong and want to blame their parents. What more could she have said or done? We all want are kids to always do what’s right. We teach them right from wrong but that doesn’t mean that it’s always gonna turn out that way. I was a child who knew and understood right from wrong and still chose to do what I wanted to do not caring about the consequences until I had to live with them. But…I did learn from them – for me. And I hope I can do the same with my kids that my mother did with me. However, because I’ve gone through a lot of things my mother didn’t experience, there are certain signs I will notice off the bat in my children (and other people children) that my mother didn’t see in me, simply because she never directly or indirectly experienced it.

The example I gave does have a life of crime. One of the families I spoke about has a daughter who flipped out, turned to cocaine and began stealing from her family and friends. She also abused her mother (literally beating her) when there was nothing left to get her hands on. This same girl, got pregnant by one of her dealers (because she was having sex with him when she didn’t have money) and would leave the baby home alone while she went out partying. One of the families has a son who watched his daddy beat the crap out of his mother after he came home from a bar after work, because his food was cold. To this day, this same child (which is a man now) does the same thing to his girlfriend. Need I go on? Because I can. Yes, we’re going to have to agree to disagree. I just feel that a lot of parents overlook the lil’ things their kids do at an early age and readily dismiss it w/out addressing the underlying issue. A child that yells “NO!” or throws stuff, w/out it being properly addressed by the parent, can be a precursor to a teenager cursing at their parents and disregarding any rules set by that parent.
At the end of the day, I will raise my son to know that he will ALWAYS be my son and anything he does will be reflection of, not just himself, but of the family as a whole.

It’s not about one line being better than the other. But if you do something that has a direct impact on you being able to get a good job or just being able to get ahead in life, THAT, in my opinion, is crossing the line.
And there’s a difference between getting into ish that can be chalked up as “youthful indiscretion” (which I did) and getting into ish that has an adverse effect on how you turn out in life.
I have nothing to blame my mother for because like I said, I toed the line. I do give my mom credit for making sure I stayed on my Ps & Qs which I believe had a direct result on why I graduated college in 4 years and went on to get a dual MBA/JD degree. Mind you I grew up in THE toughest neighborhood in the NYC.

Well, then, I think everything I did has an adverse effect on how I turned out. Because I know if I hadn’t gone through the things I went through, I wouldn’t have the drive to succeed. It’s because of what I did that makes me want to be a better person because a better and responsible person is who my mother raised. I haven’t graduated from college with an MBA or anything like that, I do have a promising career I’ve been in for almost 5 years. I’m back in school majoring in Accounting after years of not attending. Yes, I do have a 5 year plan. While I’m taking my cl*****es, I am available to be considered in a secondary level accounting position with my current employer. As I work on getting my bachelors degree, I will also be getting the experience needed to advance to the third level accounting position – all I need is 5 college courses and I already have 2. By the time I hit the third level, I will be qualified to be an Accountant for any firm. I’m not stopping there. I plan to get my Master’s and take the CPA test and open my own firm.
See, some people use their mistakes as an excuse or a reason for society to blame it on their home training. But not me. I use mine as a foot stool to lift me up to where I know I was destined to be.

Well keeping me on my Ps & Qs (studies, school work, etc) is what motivated me to go to college. And you’re right, at any given time I could have just as easily not gotten a higher education, but that’s my point exactly, that’s not how I was raised. The foundation that my mom instilled in me meant that I would go to college and then after that I was motivated to pursue a higher degree. But I can say that the seed of knowledge was definitely planted by my mom…and based on my upbringing I just chose to continue watering that seed.
