I first saw this posted on MTO and didn’t believe the story at first — Until I found the article myself on the Details magazine site. Not only are these comments attributed to Quincy Jones, he conducted the interview after MJ’s death.

This is beyond poor taste.

The MTO posters tore Jones a new one, and he totally deserves it. HE SHOULD KNOW BETTER.

Also, according to the article, he does not plan to attend MJ’s funeral:

Black, White, Asian, Hispanic women ALL wear weaves, contacts, makeup, etc. I think ALL women should have have same rules/access to cosmetic options. (e.g. If it’s not okay for one type of woman to wear a weave, it shouldn’t be okay for another type of woman to wear a weave. Or, if it’s okay for one type of woman to wear contacts to change her eye color, it should be okay for another type to do the same. etc…) But, I think the only/primary way to get Black women to stop wearing weaves, etc. and to go natural is for Black MEN to start loving/accepting/embracing Black women who don’t use those products/alterations. In our community, it’s an unspoken but known fact that MOST people only want to see a woman’s hair in its natural state if it’s long/non-nappy. Otherwise, the community prefers to see it relaxed. I think Black women would LOVE to stop going to such extremes to appeal to their own men. But, that’s a change that has to start w/Black males.

Personally, I don’t think MJ wanted to “be” White. I think he had low self-esteem and wanted to “look” White so that he would be treated better. (We all know that’s usually the case). But, he also CLEARLY had some psychological problems because his transformation took him from looking human to non-human. I don’t think he died looking “white”. Yeah, he was PALE. Why does trying to “talk proper” bother you? We are Americans, and our native language is English. What’s wrong with learning how to speak/use it correctly? Even Malcolm X thought it was important to learn the language, not only in terms of grammar, but also in terms of vocabulary. I think many people groups have multiple ways of speaking/communicating. I know how to use proper grammar, but I also know how to communicate w/others who don’t. My friend is Asian. She uses standard English in the workplace, but she uses a combo of English and Lao at home. I personally see anything wrong w/that.

But, I date all types of people. However, since I am a rich shade of brown, I sometimes think about how dark I’m willing to marry. I don’t want my daughters going through any crap. If Black men were supportive of their dark women, I wouldn’t care if my daughters were JET Black. But, since that’s not the case, I have second thoughts. You know, when Black females are “pro-Black” and accept the (VERY Negroid) Black man unconditionally in all of his “Blackness”, it’s applauded. But, when the daughters of those same Black man come out just as Black (Negroid), Black males (typically) don’t say, “Hey, let me marry her. She’s Black b/c her mom supported the Black man, and, now, I want to support her too.” And, the rejection comes from Black males who are equally Black and even moreso. So, since that’s the case, and since I understand the challenges Black women face, I think about color in my mate selection more than I normally would. It’s not something I’m “proud” of, but I’m being honest. I don’t want to deal w/my daughters being hurt and rejected all of the time BY THEIR OWN PEOPLE (the CRITICAL issue).

But, I never lost respect for him over changing his physical appearance b/c I felt like I understood. You’re right, all people groups are constantly making adjustments to be “more acceptable”. I think this is the result of the disparities in the allocations of power, privilege, resources, and oppression. I mean, I don’t believe God created ANYONE w/a sense of inferiority/inadequacy. Based upon that belief, people must have developed an idea that something was “wrong” with them due to the treatment/messages (verbal and nonverbal) they were receiving from others. yep, I’m very familiar with the skin disorder (Vitiligo) as it has shown up in my family tree on multiple people through multiple generations. Yep, there is no cure and no it’s not been confirmed that its genetic either but that has not been ruled out for the either, the simple fact is it is not yet known what causes it. BUT my sleepy eye hasn’t been confirmed that its genetic either yet, my great grandma had one and one of my sons as well. Speaking of eyes my eye color is greenish brown (hazel) and I’m the only one in the family that has them (interesting). My point is skin disorders TYPICALLY show up in the blood line and can skip generations but in MJ’s case NO ONE… not a nephew, a cousin an uncle an aunt, NO ONE. There’s no one else. Just seems peculiar to me. On another note MJ did more than bleach his skin. MJ was in a position of representation of a people. The idea that his actions had no impact on the community that provided him the very means to become the epitome of success that all others are measured by in his craft is misguided. With that stage that WAS GIVEN to him by the black community and eventually America and the world came MUCH responsibility. It never appeared that he fully embraced his roots and granted much of that could possibly be contributed to his dad but at the same time *whisper* (our children are watching)and they don’t understand the man-child, dark skin to light skin, fat nose to little nose thing. So how he looked DID matter and whether are not he proactively represented our community DID matter. So in closing showing the world that you wanted to be something other than what you were mattered. It mattered to everyone that loves him and it matters now to all of us who are mourning him.

If those two children were conceived through a surrogate arrangement with Rowe, how do we know whether or not MJ’s sperm was not intentionally or deceitfully exchanged for someone elses. Nevertheless, regardless of those children’s plain, colorless look and stringy hair; Michael Jackson willingly accepted and provided for those kids as if they were his own. If there are any questions remaining as to whether or not MJ is their “biological father” then neither Debbie or the kids should gain from Michael’s will. Return his money to Michael Jackson’s own genetic family where the genius factor originated and will be generated. I think Mike did what he did due to the fact that he just didn’t like himself. When someone doesn’t like themselves, they change what they can control. ie. people with eating disorders.
He said he was always teased for having a big nose which is why he got so many nose jobs.
So, I don’t think he was ashamed of being black or wanted to be white. He just wanted to change who he was and perhaps the pain and hurt was so deep – he went overboard.
I ‘m Asian. I grew up around mostly white people.
I was teased relentlessly for my flat nose, yellow skin, I have lids over my eyes (which are almond shaped) but still got the slanty eyes comments and well for just looking different. I remember getting a perm (super curly hair) because I wanted to fit in. I wasn’t ashamed of being Asian just everyone around me thought I should be. Luckily, I had enough self esteem in me to realize I looked stupid and I should just be happy I have all my parts and they all work. Unfortunately, Mike didn’t, if anything he got the complete opposite.

FYI, the Details interview has been picked up by a number of sites, including HuffPo. Also (and I didn’t know this before today), Quincy Jones was also interviewed by Katie Couric and described MJ as “self-destructive.”

This man, who described Michael as his “little brother,” has time to go to various media outlets to talk about MJ’s various dysfunctions — which, ironically, mirror some of the same accusations thrown out him over the years (talk about a pot calling the kettle black — no pun intended) — but his oh-so-busy travel itinerary prohibits him from attending his memorial service next week.

All Quincy had to say to interviewers was “No Comment.” I don’t think there’s anyone delusional enough to not see that Michael was internally tormented. But we don’t need a public rehash of the troubles that plagued MJ, particularly when he hasn’t even been laid to rest. Michael is gone. He is unable to address these “critiques” by people once seen as the closest to him — people who have deep-seated issues of their own (yes, I’ve referring to Quincy). To resort to making remarks best suited for the National Enquirer or some other tabloid about someone who died suddenly and tragically is hitting a new low.

BTW, below is an example of the “overture” Q made to his “little brother” just a few short years ago when he declined to work with him again. From Vibe.com:

It’s so easy to shine the spotlight on someone else’s issues when you have ones of your own that you rather sweep under a rug. I personally think Q could have seen a bit of himself in Michael. I just can’t see someone openly discussing his “friend’s” problems after he has p*****ed. That friendship/relationship needs to be re-evaluated.

I agree with an earlier poster who drew a parallel between Q and MJ — Quincy may try to distance himself from what he views as outside of his comprehension, but his behavior mirrors much of what he is criticizing.

We’re in 2009 and people are still trying to p***** they or their children off for white. It’s hard being black in this world even when you got that money. Hollywood has got a formula for success that can be fatal for less affluent black people whose lack of money. Its like an outfit, all you have to do is slip into, but don’t slip and fall.

Money allowed Mike to go so far from the troubled reality that he never truly reckoned with concerning his father. Mike wanted to be White because his black father beat him. When Mike grew up some and got a little richer, White people in his life supported him as he wished his Father had, but you gotta realize that his father got him into the ballpark to be surrogately parented and noticed by white people in the first place.

Mike *****ociated being black with being like his father. Because his father beat him he felt like to be black meant to be incomp*****ionate so he felt more comfortable around white people because they didn’t pressure him to toughen up, they allowed him to open up as he never did as a child. They accepted him trying to relive his childhood. To them he was black and would always be black regardless of how sentimentally he handled his personal problems. He was their entertainment on tv and concerts, yet they were who he felt obligated to. He felt like white people and their technology were to be commemorated in his flesh for they allowed him to look finally dis*****ociate himself from his father when he looked at the Man In The Mirror. What he altered and sacrificed of his physical appearance was nothing compared to how bad Mike felt being in the same black skin of his Father. Mike felt like being black entailed the expectation of/for him to be like his father or moreso. Mike chose to look white to dishonor such an expectation and to not identify with his father.

White people in the role they played in his life helped him dis*****ociate from his Father, mentally and physically. They gave him something to relate to after he changed his appearance. Joe may have beat Mike, but he would have never watched him hurt himself unto death like the people Mike surrounded himself with that supposedly cared. Joe wanted a better life for Mike and the fam, yet he would not that they should perish for such.

I’ll see if I can borrow a copy — I didn’t know until today that his mother was a schizophrenic who had to be hospitalized. I’m sure there are many insights in his memoir, which could explain some of the choices he has made in his life.

I saw “Ray” (and loved it), but I haven’t read Ray Charles’ autobio. I’ll have to check it out.

Yes, I agree with everyone. I am sadly disappointed in Quincy Jones comment about MJ. His compliment was very inappropriate. And I’d also like to comment on something that PrettyWhiteGirl said. You are partially right. While so many people want to dog out MJ for his “color issues”, when Black people have had a loong history of desiring to be “white”. But while your pointing the finger prettywhitegirl, you should point a couple at yourself. Point to yourself (not you, but at whites in general) as part of the reason for that. Society has told us for many many years that beauty is European. So I wonder why so many of my beautiful black people (including myself at times) want to process their hair, make it longer, secretly (or blatantly). MJ allegedly got chemical peel. Do you know how many black folks back in the day used to bleach their skin? They weren’t doing it because it was a trend. They did it because they wanted to be excepted. So as I was saying, though your comment has a ring of truth to it, you shouldn’t look at your observation in such a disrespectful way. I take it only that you obviously are ignorant to this issue, therefore I won’t shoot stupidity looks at you. I do encourage you to reeducate yourself on the powerful perception that skin color has on a person’s psyche. Watch a movie like “Imitation of Life” to get some perspective. And one more thing prettywhitegirl, think about how much money a lot of white people (maybe yourself included) have spent in tanning salons or sitting out in the sun for hours (risking sunburn and skin cancer) to give you a darker complexion. So somewhere deep inside your European selves you realize that “black really is beautiful, and the darker the berrier, the sweeter the juice”. So I challenge you to ask yourself prettywhitegirl, what would you rather have: burns from the lye of a hair relaxer, or sunburns/ultraviolet sunray burns that leave you with red blotches, chaffing/peeling skin, or even skin cancer? So it looks like a lot (not all) of black women and white women have a lot to learn on our perception of beauty. Getting back to the article. Im glad we actually have certified dermatologists on this forum! We do not or will probably never know if he had the skin disease or not. He might have received from the bleaching of his skin, which can be debated on as well and it went another direction that he probably didnt. And it might have wanted to be white. My only wish if quincy had such a problem talk to him or just outside of quincy I wish there were more of a diverse crowd with him instead of just white people around telling him how “different” he looks when he was in his teens and early twenties. All the Micheal worshipers are trying to justify the skin whitening. The fact is, Michael Jackson would probably go down as the greatest entertainer bar none but the fact is, the guy had a problem with his being black..check this out! The guy had three children with two ugly white woman. If a black man is attracted to white women that doesn’t mean that he hates himself or his race..it simply means that he is attracted to white women, but when someone changes the color of his skin to appear white that is another story and is completely different. Quincy is right and some of you Micheal worshipers cannot face the truth. I am not going to celebrate no black man who wanted to be white. Wonderful performer but he ended up being a white women. Born a black man but ended up being a white woman.. Only in America!

Of course he wanted to be white…it was the only way he could ever be labeled the “King of Pop”. You notice that most of the memorial magazine photos they have of him all show him when he’s white as snow. It’s kinda like the white Jesus. In America, Christianity would have never flourished and white people would have never accepted him as their savior if they thought he was a black man. Just like how they’d never accept MJ as the “King of Pop” if his skin was black.

please what is the matter with quincy’s wifes? Can’t you have a relation ship with a person different from you without dreaming beeing white or smb else? Bossip you should travel more, and see that the world is changing and in fact racial issues are less and less important. Michael had probably a complex, we don’t know why coz our people don’t have any reason to underestimate themselves. He was so gorgeous and talented, he did not need any surgery….It’s so sad.

Black or white who cares!!!! Michael was taught from a young impressionable age that being white was more acceptable in order to share his talent. He seen that being white meant an easier life….no back door entrance to shows for the whites. Look a little more white to sell to a “wider audience”. He had acne as he went through puberty and propbly started the peel b/c of it (and was still cute and sexy). His father apparently made fun of his looks. Nuff people bleach some more obvious than others. Asians use umbrella and white powder to look more white and no one make fun of them. The shade of your skin does not define beauty and I wish Michael knew how much I loved him growing up regardless of his skin tone. And he made a valid point that people who tan to be darker are not ridiculed like he was! Love people stop hating because pigmentation!

Yes, I had the honor of meeting some at Kidada’s Disney Couture Launch (the darkest one who had the most problems/ defied her daddy and dated Tupac after Tupac shouted him out in his own magazine). I like Kidada. I see her as a real sister. She dates black guys and her girlfriends are black. She had issues growing up with her identity and wrote about her father not really being the best.

Anyway, Rashida Jones has very eurocentric features. His youngest daugter Kenya (by some German actress/model) looks just like Paris Jackson. I am shocked Quincy would say such a thing especially the part where he is like…”look at his kids?” Quincy has white grandchildren because his offspring have been with whites and had 75% white children. Would he like someone to attack his family when he dies at a time of grief?

It was a Nina Simone interview where she credited Quincy Jones with messing MJ up with his constant parade of white women. I was shocked that Nina Simone who worked with Jones said this.

Quincy as aformentioned was attack by Tupac and had his daughter Rashida (who played an Italian in a movie!) wrote a piece defending him and behaving as if it were an attack on his children and family. The hypocrisy here is shocking. He was angry when it was done to him.

I am tired of all of these self-righteous people with complexes of their own behaving as if Michael was some strange anomaly. It is not too hard to see why he may have been so messed up in this world.

In addition, hasn’t it been confirmed by multiple sources (medical, law enforcement/judical, family and friends, make-up artist) that MJ had vitiligo as well as lupus (both auto-immune diseases)He had to undergo depigmentation surgery to remove melanin so his skin would not have patches of brown and beige. During his Thriller years, he had to cover from head to toe and wear very visible skin make up to cover the discoloration. It is why he began wearing the now infamous one glove. It was to cover the vitiligo because it often times starts on the left hand.

Now,I am confused why the mainstream media does not do a special on this. This is of interest. If so many people think that it is B.S. then lets put all the evidence out there and see if it can be disputed. Why leave it out of the discourse.

Lastly MJ had interviews were he claimed that he was proud of being black and he made black education and charities to Africa a priority as well as other things.

Absent of the depigmentation, what is there really to contend? He would be the eqivalent to many black celebrities/notables with the same lifestyle and habits like himself.

I am tired of white people and black people with extreme complexes of their own questioning MJ’s pride in his identity and behaving as if his internalized racism and discomfort would have been so strange, shocking and exclusive to him. Look at the society we live in.

I love how no one is looking to change certain ideologies, racial hierarchies and standards of self-worth and beauty that poison our minds from a young age. A million black children will be born around the world this year to grow up and suffer from the same complex.

Talk about self-righteous, Talk about hypocritical, Talk about arrogant and Talk about judgemental.

If one would note, Mike tried to tell Q about his illnesses – which he did have verified by the autopsy. But Q thought that Mike was lying and trying to be white. Mike- according to the autopsy did have vitiligo, Lupus and a burst blood vessel in his lung. He has had it since his early 20’s. Mike was telling the truth, but *****ody believed him. I spent the whole summer just researching his life and illnesses. – Sometiimes the TRUTH is stranger than fiction. Mike was not lying.
