There’s a petition circulating around for people who want to see Franke and Neffe’s reality show and Tiny and Toya’s reality show cancelled. We signed it. Will you?

The B.E.T. Cable Network continues to degraide the Image of black people to be specific, African Americans. This network is not progressive and tarnishes the image of Black women.
They have UPCOMING SHOWS wich we must put a stop to, we must use our voice and power to stop this sad network from painting false images of black women and promoting shows that perpetuate every stereotype so many are fighting. Shows such as FRANKIE and Nephie and Tiny and Toya must not air.
We don’t want the world and our people watching a bunch of ghetto, trashy looking blk women who perpetuate stereotypes being shown on national televisiion..its embarrassing and not a reflection of many AA women but sadly this is what the world gets to see. DEBRA LEE who comes off as having class is setting African Americans back big time, she should be fired…… MEN AND WOMEN, BOYS AND GIRLS ,SIGN THIS to try to put a stop to this, don’t let these shows air!

wow! i wonder how many people will sign the petition. i understand that “reality” shows are popular but bet needs to come up with uplifting shows that come on more than just once a week (sunday). bet could highlight various communities around the u.s. and show how people within those communities are working towards making them better. there are plenty of positive shows bet could promote but they are too busy being followers (of mtv) and not leaders. bet, let’s GET IT TOGETHER PLEASE!

I won’t sign it, and I wonder how many people actually saw the show before signing. The commercials turned me off, but Tiny and Toya wasn’t as bad as I expected. Dealing w/ abandonment issues w/ parents, a woman’s role in a marriage (to work or not) and Alzheimer’s was all discussed in the first episode. While I expect Frankie and Neffe to be a mess, I can’t judge w/o having actually seen the show. How about we start a petition asking black parents to raise their kids differently. Stop letting them watch anything or listen to everything on TV and radio, read to their kids, volunteer in their kids’ schools, set rules and consequences in their households etc. As a teacher, these are the things that will actually change others’ perceptions of black women( and men) in general.

I would NOT sign it. The Tiny and Toya show was good. You know it’s reality TV and this is how people really live. This show is kind of inspirational. Take Toya’s situation – she practically HAS NO family and she looks at Tiny and her family and admires what they have and feeds off of Tiny for hope and just to be better. She wants to get her MOM off the streets and drugs – what’s bad about that – it’s her Mom! I dont’ see anything wrong with the show thus far, so I agree with EMPRESS VENUS.
I agree with Kim Anderson’s comment. BET is just cashing in on what VH1 and MTV are already doing. Although they don’t represent how I personally act, it is real. Its not coonery and all this other ***** everyone wants to throw out! Its there REALITY, and it “is what it is”! If you don’t agree with it, and don’t want to support it TURN THE DAMN CHANNEL, AND DON’T READ ABOUT IT! But to want to stop something that is being made BY US FOR US, is wrong also! I don’t want to see the stupid Neffie & Frankie show. However I did watch Tiny & Toya and it wasn’t that bad. It shows how they weren’t just baby mama’s and the issues they go through as well. I plan to watch the entire season.

Unfortunatley there is an audience for everything. If you dont want to see shows like those then dont watch them. Thats how you do something about that. but understand karma is strong and if things are not right, there will be concequences. Just look at hip hop, My personal opinion on that is that its karma has finally caught up with it. I too wonder how many people actually watched the Tiny & Toya show before signing this petition. Sure the concept and the previews may have come across a certain way, but in actuality, this is one of the realest shows I’ve seen in a while. It’s not just about the fluff of having had children with famous men, but deals with real life issues that normal people deal with everyday. Like someone else mentioned, in the first episode we’ve seen them deal with abandonment issues, serious family illness, and the desire to grow as individuals. To me, these are all things that a lot of people can relate to. In my opinion, the main things that might let this show appear to be “ghetto” would maybe be their accents and their way of speaking, however that’s a cultural issue. But if you look past that, I don’t see anything about this show that would warrant me signing a petition to take it off the air. As for Frankie and Neffe, I’ll reserve my opinion until I’ve actually seen the show.
I feel as though whoever would circulate/ sign a petition to stop these shows really has to much time on their hands. If you don’t like the shows turn your television off and don’t watch them it is that simple. If you feel this degrades African American people as a whole than you probably have some issues yourself, all of us did not grow up in middle or upper cl***** america, some of us did grow up with parents addicted to drugs and have had to go through the struggle of letting go. We are the ones who identify with these shows, does that make me any less of an educated black woman. Do they look trashy to you because they have tat’s or are some of you actually jealous because they have the funds to have personal trainers, or because their accent is to heavy how dare you judge these women and try to stop their progression you are the very people in society that disgrace the African American culture. It’s funny I had this same ignorant discussion with my cousin who feels they are so hood and so country and cl*****less, yet was so glued to the television she would not get up to change her child’s soiled pamper (one of 3 kids with no father in sight) Living with my parents for free! ! And desperate for a rich man. With a continuous body odor and won’t bathe or cleanup after her children. This makes me wonder are you women bitter and hate to see other women come up. Being who they are rather than putting up a front and trying to be someone they aren’t. There is one word that sums this up. HATE

Hmmmm… I’m not quite sure how I feel about this petition. On one hand, I get the point that BET does air shows, music videos, and movies that degrade our people, oh and not to mention that ghetto ***** BET AWARDS SHOW, but on the other hand, these shows are just shows of women and their lives. I think that reality TV shows are stupid in general and I’m not sure if this is a good petition or not. I see far more worse shows of WHITE people than blacks. Rock of Love had the NASTIEST TRASHY *****TY *****es, brooke hogan, wild, doesn’t know what to do with her life party girl, Paris New BFF, Real World, Road Rules, The Gauntlet, The Inferrno, That Playboy Bunny Show, Daisy of Love…. the list goes on forever and ever. Why didn’t that person write a petition to MTV and VH1 banning all reality Tv shows? That network isn’t doing anything to the image of anyone that they do not choose to do to themselves. society -many years ago- started recognizing the black female for the very reason it recognizes any product, purely as a form of profit. Hollywood will not let a show with a black woman, and black man as leading characters survive, they would prefer a white woman and a black man, or a black woman and a white man (monster’s ball) show survive. Everything is so racial and people try to overlook that!!! So let them have their show it’s no different that no one else!!!!

After reading the petition again, considering the typos and the wording of it, I get the feeling that this is more about someone maybe having a problem with these particular women, rather than suddenly feeling the need to hold BET to a higher standard. I mean we’ve all pretty much been saying the same thing for years: that BET does not do well in empowering Black people but instead perpetuates stereotypes. So why now, all of a sudden when these shows are supposed air is there a petition? Where was the petition when Keyshia Cole’s show was on? Afterall, that is where we first met Frankie and Neffe. I may be totally of base, but I would take this more seriously if this was a petition listing all the things wrong with BET as a whole and changes that need to be made, which we’ve all been asking for, instead of targeting these two shows in particular. But like others have said, if you don’t like it don’t watch it.

Ok, this is long overdue. While reality tv is quite entertaining sometimes, it is usually reality for a small group and not the majority. Being married to a rapper, having a daughter that is a famous singer, etc is simply not realistic. And don’t get me started on Flavor Flav, ugh! It is exploitation and buffoonery. Maybe if BET would be more responsible concerning our community we could throw our support, pride and family viewing time behind them. As it stands right now, I can not and will not.
It is very sad that African Americans in general do not have enough positive representation on television,it is also sad to see white america misrepresent African americans on television but then to see fellow Af. American misrepresent us is sickening. I for one want to see these reality shows end they do nothing to advance us only push us back. Where are the quality programs representing the african american community.

That’s because there are waaaaay more white shows on TV. If you only have 10 black shows and 9 of them are ghetto ***** reality shows then that is definitely NOT a good thing. There needs to be a balance.
I wouldn’t bother to sign a petition to stop two shows, hell the WHOLE network needs to be shut down or re-vamped. If we all stop watching, BET will get the message and reform…or the network will go off the air completely (and I for one wouldn’t miss it).

If you really want to see change at BET, you have to hit them where it will really hurt – and that is in their advertising money. All I hear from you all is BET is this and that, but yet all of BET’s reality programming is highly rated.

Let’s not forget Columbine (2 parent families for both of those boys), or for that matter Paris Hilton (2 parent household). Just because you got a bunch of ghetto bunnies that will show their ***** on tv for dollars doesn’t mean that the whole black nation is messed up. However, there are plenty of black folk out there that need a reality check about how to raise their children, how to have a relationship inclusive of marriage instead of the multiple “baby daddy or momma” syndrome and how to love yourself without having to show your ***** to get attention or dollars (even if you don’t have a tv show).
We should expect more from BET-TV but let’s face it, there has been coonery and *****ery on VH1, MTV, and BRAVO (recently) & CBS, ABC and NBC. If we had a petition for every coon show on tv, Good Times and The Jeffersons to name a couple, would not have been on television for as long as they were. Even if we had “responsible” shows, how many in our community would complain that the show is not “realistic”? Look at the Cosby Show as an example.
The most effective censor in your home is the off switch on the tv. If you can’t get to the off switch, talk to your kids if you allow them to watch that kind of crap. Find out what they think, if you find that their values are being warped or subverted by these shows, take the time to talk to them, let them know your expectations & values and LIVE THEM NOT JUST TALK.
Having written all this, you can have the most “crispity coons” or uppity minstrels but your children are going to consider you their best role model, right or wrong. If they hear you talking about the number of *****s you had to suck in order to pay your car note, electricity or whatever, that will have a bigger impact than Frankie/Neffie and their nonsense. If they see you disrespecting women physically or verbally, that will have a bigger impact than the Bobbie Brown/Whitney Houston show.
Because of the way I was raised (as were a lot of the other respondents on this site) I look at these shows as examples of how not to carry on my life. I refuse to *****ume that the entire black race is circling the bowl because of a bunch of loud, ignorant, needy, foolish idiots who happen to be black.

I would love to see more shows like Kimora Lee Simmons reality show that show powerful black men and women doing their own thing in the business world. We need more images of that, rather than ghetto acting individuals.

Just because Paris Hilton has a million dollars and she sucked some man’s ***** for all the world to see, doesn’t mean the it is Right! Black people we don’t have to do and be everything we see on TV.
Cl***** is not defined by how much money we make, but how we carry ourselves.
Now I agree with the young brotha Jay Lane, we can turn our Televison sets to another channel. But this does not negate the fact that we have so few shows that show us in a positive light and too many that demean black woman and are negative images for our children!
Reading through all these comments, I can honestly say this seems to be a much-needed debate, and most of the viewpoints have been very strong. Persoally, while I applaud the efforts of a petition, that is NOT going to cancel the show. Only low ratings will. Tune out, and the show is cancelled – bottom line.
What we must understand is that BET is no longer catering to or targeting grown, Black people with common sense. Their demographic audience is now stretching down into the pre-teen or “tween” sect, and these are the kids who will keep these shows going. The power and influence of the 12-21 demographic has an amazing impact on TV viewership. For example, MTVN has restructured channels just to target this audience through such channels as “The N” and cutting-edge entertainment like “Adult Swim” (found on Comedy Central, which falls under the MTVN umbrella…as well as BET). As parents, we need to be policing what our children are watching, so that they don’t get sucked n to the tragedy of coonery and don’t contribute to the success of these shows.
It’s a shame that a network that started off with so much promise for Black people is now a parody of itself. It’s not too late for BET to recognize and bring it back the right way but, sadly, they won’t. I can say with certainty that I won’t be tuning in to either of these shows. They are an embarr*****ment. But, to each his own.

I don’t think watching positive role models are boring. The Cosby’s were a positive role model and a big hit in its day. I love The Game. Now everything in it wasn’t estraordinarily positive, it somethime has its moments, but there were no Crackheads, and the only babymama owned her own business. BET Lets bring back The Game. I refuse to watch the CW because they took it off the air. Where is the petition to bring back The Game?

How about we stop the coonery in our personal lives? I don’t like the direction BET has moved, so I simply choose not to watch the network. I’m much more concerned about my family and setting examples for them. Start working in your communities setting the examples you want others to follow. These shows can only last as long as the audience is there to watch.

I think these shows should be taken off the air because they portrait blacks in a negative light. Yes, there are many women out there that live that lifestyle, but I don’t want to see it on TV. All of these women are using there famous ex-husband, boyfriend,or famous daughter’s name to make money. Isn’t the child support and allimony enough to live on. Would we even know who they were if it weren’t for the famous people in their lives.
I haven’t had the time to read everyones posts but my point of view is simple…..these women want to be exploited so why not? People like Frankie, Neffie, and Toya are examples of real black women that exist in our world today. I say LEAVE THE SHOWS ON THE AIR AND KEEP GIVING THEM NEW SEASONS….so young black women can see how the world laughs at you when you act like ghetto superstars…they need to learn that it is not ok to have 3 and 4 “baby daddies”….it is not ok to be in love with a man that not only doesnt want you but that has two women pregnant at the same time while married to neither….they need to see and understand THIS IS NOT OK!!!! Tiny is the only one that I respect because she was successful long before this show or TIP, and she doesn’t seem like a bubblehead unlike Toya…..

I honestly don’t know why I keep turning to BET. I don’t watch any of their reality shows as they are not meant for my demographic anyway. Oh I forgot, I do like watching re-runs of The Game. I was up late last night and caught the preview of Tiny and Toya and I have to say that it really isn’t bad at all. I found Tiny’s relationship with her parents to be touching.

How many can name 10 black lawyers, doctors scientist,antropologist,social workers…etc…most cannot and they far outnumber our entertainers they are also the every day realities of african american life yet there is no balance. If you would like to keep and watch these shows then please present a counterbalance, our other vivid and vibrant reality….to ask these question, to challenge popular perception of black life in america, to demand our whole beautiful diaspora be shown does not a “HATER”make!!!!!!

Tiny & Toya show isn’t bad but u need subtitles when Tiny & her mother talks or at least put the remote on mute so u can get the closed captioned scroll when they speak. They both sound like they have marbles in their mouth.

Why are some Black people still embarr*****ed for being Black. As in all races there are different types of people of the same nationality. I’m not crazy about these 2 shows mentioned but I don’t think it is fair for Black American’s to boycott a Black show b/c some feel it shows “these” Black women as ghetto. When the hell did ghetto become such a bad thing? You have many young people trying their best to be ghetto (non-black people in American and different countries). Many smart, artistic, creative people have come from different types of neighborhoods/countries that are considered ghetto. When are people going to learn ghetto is just not for black people b/c “ghettos” are universal all around the world.
These shows may be the example of what to do or what not to do. Remember although Tina was a teenage mother, she also had a very successful singing career then engaged in a relationship where her man “T.I” wanted his women to be a housewife, that is a positive outcome. Who would have thought Tiny’s Dad has Alzheimer’s? One never knows another life and pain. If it took some money and a show to keep Frankie off of drugs then great whatever it takes. Maybe there is still hope for Toya’s mom. Toya feels she has no family out there for support for her and her daughter, that has to be a very sad feeling but she carries this pain with the warmest/inviting smile. There are plenty of people who are now adults with families still hoping and praying their parent(s) will one day get out of those streets and off of drugs.
I’m just noting there is a good message to come out of these shows so let’s not stereotype these women but look for the good message that will come out of them.

Nisha’s comment is the best reason to sign the petition possible. Note the language and the attitude, it lacks intellect (yes, Black people can be intelligent) and substance.
If Tiny and Toya were “successful” and accomplished as Nisha states there would be no show. They are entertaining because those who are sitting in some substandard environment of failure and depression need to be validated in their hope of stardom. Should Toya or Tiny proclaim that hard work, sacrifice, dedication and moral and spiritual integrity is the surest way to uplifting…the channel would get changed faster than George Bush in the middle of a Kanye concert. Their contract might not say they are to always appear petty, angry and loose…but take those elements away from their characters and what have you got?, a REAL, normal and not for TV Black woman.
If you were walking down the street with an infant in your arms and the baby started to bleed from the mouth and you saw a police officer on the next corner, would you run to him for help to save the child? Or would you say to yourself, “Just because he has a uniform and a gun, I am unable to *****ume that he is a police officer based on his appearance?” You would be neglectful to deny your natural screening ability to “judge”. Therefore, if Tiny…Toya (either or both of them) look like trampy trash, then it is unnatural and neglectful to make yourself ignore your impression.
