They NEED to be investigated! It’s a disgrace to drive around in luxury cars and live in mansions when more than half of the people these “churches” take money from are low-income church members.

The church is meant to be taken care of by its members. All faiths collect money not just black churches: catholics, jewish, jehovah witness, scientology

What is new, we give to our churches but we never question what they do with the money. How many building funds do we need or reverands in expensive cars while the community their mega church is in suffers, that is our fault.

Yeah I give my title and offering but I will also do for my fellow man because at the end of the day its me standing before God answering for what I did and I am not going to let soapbox reverend so and so keep me from the gates of eternity.

I will say this the gov’t is trying to take the money back, because God forbid if the money we have is not scrutinize more carefully to continue to control us.

I am no fan of organized religion in any fashion but you can’t be serious when you say Islam was the first religion? In fact, anyone who makes that statement understands nothing of human history regarding religion (Muhammad was born almost 600 years after Christ).

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam came in that order and are cousins of each other because they were born of the same monotheistic idealogy (belief in one god) and book (Old Testament).

Now regarding the black church, it has its function politically, and socially for the black community, but that is about it. Those expecting the individuals who talk most about God to act most like Christ, will consistently be disappointed.

@ smoovee- my understanding from the way I was brought up was that speaking in tounges was something used only in bible times as ways from GOD to prophesy… there are only three acounts in the entire bible of anyone ever speaking in tounges. The article is misleading in the way it reads. It says the did a study and Black churches have collected over 400 million since the 80′s. Then it goes on to say Grasselly’s investigation is into where that money was going. To imply that Black churches were being investigated. Then he throws in 2 out of the 6 that are white. Then singles out 2 who fall into the mega church status. So again, why aren’t Episcopalians, Methodist, Catholic, Seven Day Adventist, Mormons, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, etc, included?

This Senator is not a member of the IRS. What if we asked him for his Tax records and to prove his deductions I am sure he would not furnish them. It would be one thing if the members of these churches were complaining but we are not so neither should anyone else. well i was currently a memeber of new birth church with bishop eddie long. my thing is why are these outsiders hating on what these men and women of god built. what haters don’t tell is the positive stuff how these ministers give back to the community.

Wow! I knew about the Dollar incident, but I didn’t think it had gone this far. Yes! I say if you are church going, you should pay your tithes. How else will the church pay it’s bills? My Uncle has been a pastor for more than 20 years and rides a minivan, so he can pick the kids up for Sunday school, and bible study, choir rehersal, take members of his congregation to the grocery store. Just in case you thinking, he has no other car. He takes care of his congregation and his community the best way he can. This is not BS, he does that and more. He is on beck and call to anyone that is fortunate enough to have his number. He collects money for his CHURCH, he doesn’t need a bentley, doesn’t need a mansion, all he needs is for his congregation and his community to listen to his gospel. And he is happy! Trust me! It’s his life! So, when I see this crap, about exempt on taxes, fraud and what not, it makes me sick. I do believe what the man is saying about needing to know where the money is going.

I must admit our Black churches need to be more involved in the communities there churches are located. There is a huge need to help our children. The help that is needed could come from our churches. All we can do is pray that our churches would get there priorities straight. Those of us who are christians the bible tells us to pay our tithes and offerings. After we pay our tithes and offering it is up to the leaders of the church to make sure that the money paid in is used correctly.

You are comparing apples with oranges. Taken a vow of poverty as an “employee” of the Vatican is not in the same vein as the business plan set forth by the catholic church.

All of those purchases made by the catholic church are a part of its business plan. Just as these mega churches are businesses, so is the catholic church. As long as purchases, acquisitions, mergers, and so forth are plainly stated and are accounted for correctly there is NO problem.

There is a problem when an organization’s business plan and accounting do not match up as is the case in these black churches. Not properly accounting for gifts and expenditures creates red flags.

We are not arguing about accumulation of wealth rather, we are arguing the misuse of said wealth.

Inner-city black churches have been robbing black people for years.
Only church I ever swore that I’d join is the one in Vicksburg, MS that my grandmother and great-grandmother attended. Their funerals were also held there. Small church with a southern feel. Preacher wasn’t driving a Bentley or Mercedes like these clowns in Detroit nor did the church have it’s own ‘band’, theater, or restaurant.

The church doesn’t buy these ministers the big houses and fine cars….the mega church pastors use the tithe and offering to build these big churches and get famous…then they use that power to write books, do conferences, speaking engagements, hold mega fest, etc….that is the big payday! Jakes doesn’t even take a salary…his money comes from his outside endorsements!!!! Don’t get me wrong, tithes and offerings does alot…it takes money to heat and cool these fine buildings and pay the salaries of the workers but the BIG money come from endorsements and that is in any line of business.

Yes I understand that Black mega churches are raking in the money on a yearly basis. There is nothing wrong with prosperity, but what’s wrong with the ministers sharing the wealth ?

Then again, there are a lot of White churches that also exploit the poor Whites that attend their churches.

Wow, I don’t who runs this site but I don’t why they would even post this article whatever it is. I don’t get how people complains about giving money to churches if you don’t want to give nobody will force you to do it. I wish my church had an ATM machine because sometime I go there unprepared and I am not able to participate. Listen a church is like a family you have to be part of it to really know what goes on there.One day I met a lady who told me that she would give anything to her church because of what they have done in her life. I have met people who use to be addicted to drugs, gambling and all of other darkness ways you can find on earth and we all know the price that comes with that $…wise.Giving is an act of worship and you don’t do it because of you are expecting anything from your preacher you do it because it is the best thing you can do. Some people choose to give $ so guys all of you with negative comments about churches and money find something else to talk about that you are familiar with. Thanks.

Why am I not surprised? I go to Riverside Church in New York City and that church has recently been under the microscope for paying a reverend 600K.

While I do enjoy attending, I became turned off with a lot of things; one being that they wanted my bank routing number and checking account number so that they may take out tithes. WTH?!?!?

Also, I had one client that was a pastor and he wanted me to photograph him in a Jaguar and at a sprawling estate with all of this jewelry on. I told him that it wasn’t a good idea, but he didn’t want to listen to me, so I told him to find another photographer.

We all know that God is inside of you and not in a building. It’s at the point that people don’t want to give money because they don’t know where it is going.

My family left our the church we grew up in because of financial scandal….nobody knows where that 50K went!

It’s a disgrace. I think churches should lose their tax-exempt status. And unfortunately that’s something that may have a detrimental effect on smaller churches.

But these mega-churches with their mega-preachers are out of hand. And Creflo in particular has no shame. I am sorry, but you’re using people and justifying it by your own twisted rationale.

What happened to humility?

I have the utmost faith in God…..church and the preachers, not so much.

If they want investigate these mega churches, don’t just stop with Creflo & Eddie Long. Investigate ALL of these rich mega churches regardless of what color the Bishop or Pastor or whatever they are calling themselves these days. I don’t give to the church, I give to the homeless & hungry. These mega churches are nothing but pimps on the pulpit as M.B. says. They only care about wealth for themselves & they will NEVER get a dime of my money. Wake up people, they will NOT get you in Heaven.
