Two developments in this case from the Philadelphia Inquirer, philly.com. First, a lawsuit was filed last week on behalf of a mother of one of the children:

A lawyer whose firm filed a discrimination lawsuit against Valley Club on Friday on behalf of an unnamed Creative Steps mother with four children said yesterday that the club’s overture would put the suit on hold.

“We find this to be a very positive development,” said the lawyer, David Mildenberg. “We applaud the club’s decision.”

Mildenberg & Stalbaum P.C. had sued Friday in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

“We are hopeful that a resolution will be reached that allows these children to return to the club,” said Mildenberg, who said his Philadelphia firm was handling the suit on a pro bono basis.

I’m not sure I would want go back in that pool now anyway….

Second, a Justice Dept. investigation may be pending — Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) asked the DOJ to investigate whether the swim club violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

CNN has been all over this story, and the swim club owners, to me, appeared unapologetic and even offended by the negative coverage. They claim that this was a “safety” issue and even mentioned that the swim club president, John Duesler, was an Obama supporter — ironically, this incident, among others, proves the fallacy of the statement of how we now live in a “post-racial America.” He denied hearing any racial statements. It was heartbreaking to view interviews with the kids — one little boy interviewed on CNN looked close to tears when he talked about the reactions of the members. Horrible.

I’ve heard tales from elders about Jim Crow and pools that would not allow black visitors, and there was the infamous incident involving Dorothy Dandridge (scene was in the HBO film starring Halle) in which a Vegas hotel drained its swimming pool to prevent her from entering. It is sobering that even in 2009, we are hearing a story of this nature.

Why go back at all?! Just because CNN and other news outlets got involved do you think the club members suddenly got a change of heart? The same deep-seeded racism is there, it will now be undercover.

Find another place for these children to swim. No human should have to go through that kind of BS. When it happens forgive but don’t forget (seek legal recourse) and please don’t go back.

Further…where are the hometown celebrities of PA…they should have been the first to respond…

The last thing the daycare needs to do is accept any new agreement to become modern day marters…they should appeal to the local celebs and ask for help acquiring property and build a site that will accomodate the children of their program…

I agree, the day camp staff and kids shouldn’t return to that swim club. I don’t see why one of the local recreation centers in City of Philly can’t be converted into a swim club/rec center, poutr money into it, tear down and build it from scratch and have a grand opening, make it look so nice and massive that people from the outer suburbs would want to go there and swim, lol….

Typical…they got caught with their hands in the cookie jar, so now we want to make nice!

I read this story on Friday and had every intention of banging on those b*tches, but you know they shut their website down except for some lame as statement denying that the racism ever took place. Cowardly b*tches!!

Now you see what happens when the media finally does their job. When the media called them to task they asked the kids back, but I would NEVER let my kids go back there, because they had already shown theur true colors.

If you do back in the water you get what you got. Shut them down and patition for your own. Put pressure on the wealthy and ask what can they do.
