God has given us all gifts, some gifts are strong than the other there is nothing wrong with trying it out. If you look in the mirror and know you are gifted in acting then do what is necessary to make that gift stronger, but if not then stick with what gift God has given you.

She’s right but you can’t blame the singers and rappers. When as we, as african-americans, going to realize we have to start doing things for ourselves. With all the wealth that many african-americans have, why don’t we own any studios and have more control over projects in hollywood to make a change. Quality actors/actresses are going to be looked over all the time if they aren’t going to sell box office tickets. To give Beyonce her credit, she is a entertainment cash cow that will possibly be as big as MJ (RIP) but she gotta do better behind that Silver Screen!!

I’m so happy that Nia spoke her mind. It’s getting to be ridiculous. I didn’t bother to see Obsessed, but it does appear that Beyonce has developed a monopoly on film roles, and she is in dire need of acting classes.

If the rumor circulating a while ago that she may play Angela Davis is true, there needs to be a movement to shut that down. It’s not a case of a black woman “hating” (despise that word) on another — Nia is sharing a truth that I’m sure many other black actresses are discussing behind closed doors.

I like Beyonce, but it bothers me that she thinks she deserves an Oscar before Angela Bassett…Beyonce is a beautiful and talented singer, but after all these years in the industry, she’s only a mediocre actor, so I don’t understand why she’s always in magazines campaigning for the Oscar.

I think Nia’s comment can be applied to today’s entertainment industry, in general. Stars are being “manufactured” because they are marketable, not because they have talent. Her statement can be applied to white entertainers, as well. Look at Jessica Simpson, she can’t act. But, there are more parts available for white actresses, so the industry can accommodate her as well as Jodie Foster. Jodie doesn’t need to worry about Jessica getting any roles because that will never impact her personal opportunities. Jodie will ALWAYS have it made in hollywood, Jessica, not so much–even though she’s younger, has the popular looks, etc. I am disheartened at the shortage of opportunities for black actresses. And, I too, am also tired of seeing people try to do “everything” just to make extra dollars. I don’t like having “my” singer be my actress, fashion designer, cosmetics consultant, fragrance specialist (I don’t know what they’re called), etc. It’s ridiculous. I also get tired of seeing the same 2-5 faces on all of the magazine covers. It gets tired and played out. Unfortunately, I think the majority of the industry is about making money and only a small proportion really cares about finding/developing real and lasting talent.

Speaking of box-office revenue…when is the last time she dominated the charts with anything. She should have kept that one to herself.

Think about it — when you take the limited number of roles that are even made available to black actresses, and then you have a singer holding a monopoly, what opportunities are given to sistas who have actually been trained and have practiced their craft? There are people who live and breathe the art of acting, and that commitment comes through in their performances. Quality and substance should triumph over glitz.

Didn’t Bey say she wanted to win in every awards competition, including an Oscar AND a Tony? The sista needs to work on elocution first.

Oh, and although, Nia has not won an Oscar, she has won other awards and has appeared in highly acclaimed, indie films, such as “Boiler Room.”

I heard about that film. I also saw another indie film recently, “Medicine for Melancholy,” about a black man and woman in San Francisco who have a one night stand that develops into more that was also very well done but probably won’t make it to the big screen (or if it has, I haven’t seen it in my area).

The only problem I have with Beyonce entering into the acting arena, is that she only claims that she wants to win an Oscar. She never states that she wants to master the craft. These are two very different goals. I can see how a trained actress would be offended by Beyonce. The same way opera singers are offended by her attempt at the Ava Maria song. Stay in your lane Beyonce. Some things you should just sing at home, everything doesn’t have to be recorded.

And for those saying she’s only acting for the money, she would NOT have done Cadillac Records if that were the case. That was a fairly low budget film that had a limited release. Not to mention, Beyonce gave her paycheck from the film to the rehabilitation clinic that helped her research the role. So, this isn’t just about money for her, she’s obviously developed a passion for acting and she should be allowed to explore it.

I understand Nia Long’s point. She is not criticizing as much as making a general statement and her example was Beyonce…it wasn’t meant as a personal attack. The truth is we all know that there are many entertainers that are multi-talented…but her point is that if you are not…then do the work before landing the role to allow others how are doing the work to have the opportunity for a limited amount of roles provided for women of color. What is so wrong with that statement? She’s always been outspoken about the limited amount of roles and lessening content for women of color…I don’t see her comments as an attack at all.

You do have a couple of instances of wishful thinking on your list though. Jhud can’t act either. She played an angry black woman singer and she could sing the main songs. Practically any other eye and neckrolling sister on the street could have pulled the first part of that performance off even if they couldn’t pull off the songs in Dreamgirlz. Jhud got lucky on that first role but she is not a good actress either. Frankly, I think she is overrated too and her ego is a little out of control as a result.

The truth of the matter is that there are enough roles and enough money out there for everyone,Hollywood will and always has exploited who they want. Nia isn’t HATING on Beyonce. The fact of the matter is simply that people GO TO COLLEGE and train to be actors/actresses. It is a profession and anybody in the profession would feel like its a slap in the face to have someone like Beyonce take good acting roles. Its called “paying your dues”. People are callin Nia and black actresses who say the same things haters, well they have a legitimate reason to hate, it is difficulte in Hollywood (TV or Cinema) to be a black actor or actress, they really strugle to get good roles etc… just imagines for a second that girls like Nia, Sanaah, Vivica, Gabrielle etc.. where white, they would already have had great career in TV or Cinema but now they have to fight against Girls like Bey with absolutely no real talent but yeah a name that feels great box office numbers…

i feel Nia…Nia was there with will smith on fresh prince and played at damn good role in that as well..but where was bey then..not acting but singing..Nia long is one of the first leading black actress ,besides Halle,Jada,and a select few that mad a name for themselves when hollywood would only cater to mostly white actors/actress….

What Beyonce needs to do with that money is take speech classes for acting. It’s annoying to listen to her country accent. When she talks it’s like she is talking with food in her mouth. Or it just sounds like I’m drowing. I rather listen to her sing than pretend to act.

She did some research. She went a spoke to drug addicts. That’s fine. But I think it would have been better if she would have actually spoken to Etta James! I think that makes more sense.

Anyone who knows me will know i’m the biggest beyonce fan but i can admit that she is way more talented at performing than she is at acting… that is where her true gifts lie and i can understand how it can be annoying to actressses like NIa whohav worked hard lives to hone their skills only for some1 less able but with a bigger ‘name’ to come along and grab their big bucks.

Beyonce has been quoted to say even before dreamgirls that by the age of 30 she wants to have an oscar, whilst this may seem just ambitious to some, it proves that she does just want annother great medal on her mantlepiece. She didnt say, ‘i want to have played a really good role’ or ‘performed in a touching film’, for her its all about being the best at everything because thats all she knows and the way she is being pushed by her management

I agree with whoever said we all are multi-talented and should be allowed to develop all our gifts, but the best vet in the world would not be allowed to represent someone in court as their lawyer just because he was the best at being a vet, and its the same thing, with B no1 sees how unjust it is that she given, (and doesnt truly earn) the big roles purely because is one the best in hollywood at the momemt at performing.

Nia has every right to feel angry, however if she did say it the way it has been quoted then i feel she has been a little tactless as she is publicly dissing another artist and simultaneouly making herself look jealous and immature.
