RatbiteNEW

The poor couple pictured above have let one of their children be killed by rats and the other taken into custody by social services. You won’t believe what the dad said about this incident:

The father of a 3-month-old who was discovered dead in her crib and covered with rat bites on Thursday told WRNO 99.5 FM that he was aware he had rats in his home and did what he could to protect his two children. Robbie Hill said comments by the station’s listeners that he and his wife didn’t properly care for their infant daughter are heartbreaking.

“I did know they had a rat problem. I was doing what I had to do. I put out pellets, poison and traps,” Hill said in the interview with WRNO’s Michael Castner. “They should have trapped up that rat before it did what it did to my baby girl.” Natalie Hill was found in her crib in the family’s Westwego home bloody and covered in hundreds of bites, with the most severe injuries to her nose and right leg, police said.

“If a rat was to get to that baby’s nose, we could have heard if that baby would scream. That baby had to be dead…

…before them rats got to her,” Robbie Hill said. “If a rat was to crawl up in your crib and bite you on the nose one time, my little girl would have jumped, possibly swung her arms and the rat should have ran.”

The couple’s other child, a 14-month old boy, was taken into protective custody by the state Thursday, according to Trey Williams, communication director with Department of Social Services. The child is in foster care in the New Orleans area, he said. Williams could not provide specifics about what caused officials to remove the child from his parents, saying only that officials are continuing to investigate the matter. “Removing a child from home is never an easy decision and one we take seriously,” he said. It’s also one never done alone, but in conjunction with law enforcement, courts and community partners.” A police officer was stationed outside the child’s home as a code enforcement officer and the city’s building inspector were preparing to assess the property.

What the hell is the father talking about? He sounds as stupid as a rock, but maybe it’s just the circumstances. His child should have jumped up and waved its arms at the rat? She was three months old you idiot! SMH

We are so often very quick to pass judgement and offer up comments about life’s tragedies because believe me this is truly sad. I know first hand what it feels like to experience the lost of child in the family and these circumstances although preventable are still none the less sad, these parents definately failed their children and will still face possible prosecution from the law so I will reserve my own public prosecution to simply praying for their strength

  • Big Roy

    Wow that’s horrible…

  • TeeTee K

My heart goes out to the parents, me being a mother wouldn’t know how to deal with the pain of losing my child. I feel so bad for the baby. I know she was in encrusting pain. This story is just SAD!

  • My 2 Cents (Natural Girl)

That is so sad. If the rat infestation gotten so much out of hand, I wonder why they didn’t evacuate the house and go elsewhere.

I agree with you. I won’t pass judgement. In this economy, some people don’t even have the means to properly rid their homes of rodents. It’s sad, and I resent the racist comments that are being posted as this truly could have happened to any impoverished family.

  • shamar from the m otwn

yea you cant blame them personally maybe thats all they can afford hell people in the projects live dwith rats for years so this is nothing new he rt he put out traps poison evrything he could do i feel for him he could have said some things better but i think he was doing all he could just bcause you have rats or roaches diesnt mean you can just pack up and leave if the money isnt there so even thou thay would have to get a new place or git rid of the rats (which i doubt it )to get their other child back i just hope the state doesnt make it hard for them they already lost one this is very sad PLEASE DONT BLAME THE PARENTS

Although the average IQ is 100 it never ceases to amaze me just how idiotic the population is. I feel sorry for that child and I hope these people don’t have anymore kids. As much as I want to say something about them being “White” (due to the way I was raised) I am going to refrain because dummy’s can be found in all shades and colors.

Since the report says that the 14-month-old boy is in foster care in the New Orleans area, and the miserable effects of Katrina continue to reverberate through the Gulf states for people who lack resources, I hope that this story brings much-needed attention to the circumstances in which too many people in our country live. I hope people see beyond the grotesque to the real problems.

  • DANIEKIM7782

Spuddie….that was beautifully stated. This is so incredibly sad. Keep the family in prayers and remember they did just lose their “3 month old” daughter and this incident doesn’t scream foul play but instead just goes to show you the conditions in Louisiana. I feel so bad for them

  • Spuddie
  • Soulja2K

    Really sad story.

Sadder still are the idiots who post “1st” after something like that.

  • Jamillah

This is a very sad situation. People should not have to live in such miserable conditions. Throughout history rats have carried diseases that have killed thousands of people. That baby never had a chance as long as there was an infestation problem.

  • Spuddie

There is more information coming out that the poor baby died of S.I.D.S. and after she expired, the rat or rats started biting her, hence the reason she did not scream….A prominent Rodent research scientist ahs come out and said that most rodents will now attack a live animal due to too much movement. They will most likely attack a dead one though. It’s an “easier target.”

  • leave-it-be

@ SPUDDIE^ YOUR EXPLANATION IS TO BE COMMENDED!!! HOWEVER…. YOU DONT NEED A MAGNIFYING GLASS TO SEE BITE MARKS ON YOUR CHILD’S BODY!!!! TO HEAR RATS AND THEN SAY THEY COULD DO NOTHING CAUSE THEY COULDNT SEE IT IS B.S.!!!! RATS DON’T HIDE…. THE FIRST SOUND OF A RAT I WOULDA BEEN GONE…. JUST CAUSE YOU LIVE IN LOW POVERTY AREA DOESNT MAKE YOU UNENTITLED TO GET APPROPRIATE HOUSING ASSISTANCE THRU SOCIAL SERVICES TO AVOID THIS TRADEGY!!! THESE PARENTS WERE NEGLECTFULL!!!! NO DOUBT, NO EXCUSES!!! THEY COULD HAVE HAD SOCIAL SERVICES HOUSE THEM IN A MOTEL… ESPECIALLLY IF THEY LET THEIR CHILD GET BIT MORE THAN ONCE???? NO EXCUSE… TWO IDIOTS FOR PARENTS!!!!

  • I’m Just Me

This is very sad and I am glad the authorities too the other child. Those people apparently live like Filthy McNasties. When you have a rat problem like that (which I have never had) you get the hell outta that type of environment. Or at least have the children stay with someone until you can find more suitable housing. The pops sounds like he is on drugs or something. What was he talking about. R.I.P. to that little baby. This is a daxn shame.

    @I Knew It
You obviously can’t read. First, the other child is 14 MONTHS old, not 14 years old. Second, inside of the home was found to be relatively clean. The structure itself was deplorable. The neighbors went on record regarding how clean, well fed, well cared for and loved both the children were. The city and surrounding areas has had a major rodent, snake and alligator problem since the storm. Hell, a young boy got his arm bitten off, standing next to a canal in hid neighborhood.

  • http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0944702/ jerjorju

The baby could have been crying but I bet these knuckleheads were the type who let a baby cry.

  • yourgoodhair

if this was not a case of neglect, why doesn’t this happen more often? There are many areas in US that have rat infestations and babies aren’t eaten up on a regular basis. The baby would have screamed.

  • http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0944702/ jerjorju

Marcus Anthony: You make a valid point. The rats might have known in some way that the baby was dead. Otherwise why didn’t they go after the people who were alive?

  • http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0944702/ jerjorju

Spuddie: Thanks for your comment. I wish everyone would read it. To “leave-it-alone” You need to re-read what Spuddie said. Apparently, the child died from SIDS or something else and the rats attacked. The bites marks were probably after the child died. The parents probably thought the infant was safest in the crib. I know I didn’t know rats could climb.

Folks race has nothing to do with this. Think income. They could be living in subsidized housing. If so they couldn’t just get up and move. There is a process. How about blaming the owner of the home. Anyway, once rodents are in, they are in. A trap would only get one at a time.

  • http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0944702/ jerjorju

@ “yourgoodhair” READ The baby could have been dead from some other reason. I guess an autopsy will determine that.

  • nicci504

I live in New Orleans and the rodent problems are awful. Chances are she was attacked by nautria. Westwego has infestions of both rats and nautria. It’s sad that people are judging this young couple based on race. They’ve never hurt they’re children and social services said they’re oldest child showed no signs of neglect. Chances are the baby died of SIDS (crib death). For those who keep asking why the baby didn’t sleep with the parents it’s because a baby isn’t suppose to sleep in an adult bed. Although people do allow it there is a higher risk for SIDS when a baby sleeps with an adult. It’s 2009 and it is sad that instead of sending prayers to their family ya’ll are calling them white trash. As for ppl calling the father stupid because he said the baby would have waved her arms or something. It’s true I have a 3month old niece a fly flew on her and she waved her hands. If the baby would have been alive she would have cried or moved a body part. The cry alone would have scared the rats away. So she was most likely already dead.

  • BKLYNZ OWN

THIS SOUNDS LIKE A STORY COMING OUT OF THE SLUMS OF HARLEM.DIDNT KNOW IT COULD HAPPEND TO BISCUITS.

  • BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL. –

(WAVE HER HANDS AT 3MTHS OLD AND FLEE THE RAT AWAY) WOW!!! WHO SAYS THAT……COULD ONLY BE WHITE PEOPLE!

  • eve

Thanks Spuddie, and the few rational people on here. You know who you are. The rest well….I’ll say an EXTRA special prayer for you.

  • Iyan

Where there is a rat infestation, you must be careful at all times. Rats have been known to bite on grown live adults while they were sleeping. A little baby would be no different, except maybe they tend to sleep deeper, than an adult would. Anyways, calling an exterminator for one house in an infested neighborhood is not gonna do them any good. The city must get involved somehow. You can try to put out the traps, and what not but its not going to make them go away. Especially if they have nested in your walls, attic, and basement. Damn things are worse than roaches. My heart really goes out to this family, and I do hope they are able to reunite with their child soon.

  • HANNIBALS PIMP AKA MR.BACKHAND

@BKLYNZ OWN YOU OFFENDED ME OUR RATS IN HARLEM ARE TRAINED.
IT’S BUSH FAULT THE RECESSION IS A MUVA.

  • pRinceSa

for all of you that are saying why didn’t they just pick up and leave, it’s because CLEARLY they did not have the money. what is it that you don’t get??? if they were Black people, i’m sure no one would be asking that question. why don’t all the Black people that live in the hood just get up and leave?? CLEARLY they can’t, this country (and world for that matter) run on money. If you don’t have the money to do what you want, then you’re ASSED OUT. yes, sometimes there are governmental programs that can help you but the N.O. assistance programs have been and continue to be overwhelmed by the effects of Hurricane Katrina.

  • Jersey

Rats are very intelligent. They gnarl on your flesh whilst blowing air on their prey so there is hardly any pain

  • pumkin

THIS IS SO SO SO SAD BUT THE PARENTS DID WHAT MOST POOR PEOPLE WOULD DO LIKE BUYING RAT POISION TO KILL THE RATS. THE PEOPLE THAT SHOULD BE BLAMED ARE THE LANDLORDS BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY HAD RATS. THEY SHOULD BE PUT IN JAIL AND PAY THE PARENTS FOR PAIN AND SUFFERING.

  • Semper Fi

I too want to thank Spuddie, tru diva and the rest of those with some cot d@mn sense!!!

Im not even going to lie and pretend Im shocked at some of the ignorance I’ve seen on this board.

What is that saying? Never pick a fight with an idiot, because they will beat you down to their level everytime?

  • steph

I really don’t think its anyones “fault”…UNLESS, them mf’s heard the baby crying and just didn’t want to get their lazy a**es out of the bed to check on the baby…

  • steph

And, believe me, I’ve seen mice before, but, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that could climb up into a crib…and I hope I never do…just sad.

  • OMGMOVE

This is sooo sad. Thanks Spuddie for the enlightenment. I had a feeling that something else was going on. I do believe that if the baby was alive when they attacked her she would have at least cried. Maybe the baby was in the crib because the parents were sleeping on the floor. In my opinion, they tried to keep the baby away from harm while they were stuck in those conditions. Rats climb everything. Maybe the rats could smell the ‘sense of death’ and they attacked the baby. I do believe that if she cried or moved, they would have left her alone. This is a sad sad story. I hope this brings light to that community, especially that neighborhood so the city officials can correct it ASAP!!!

  • Butter

It is easy for bloggers to rush to judgement with this couple, but if you dont know the facts stop with the judgement. This area is apart of New Orleans and if you dont reside here you wouldn’t know what the cost of living is here. After the storm you are blessed to have a roof over your head some of us are still displaced or under Claiborne bridge. With that being said this couple lived where they could AFFORD to. Second of all both of them are hearing impaired so they could not hear as well as you. Be carfeul of how you judge because this same situation could happen to you. Do you invite roaches or rats in your home? I didn’t think so. If you don’t live here you don’t know what we are facing. Come visit New Orleans and not for Mardi Gras, drive around areas other than what the governor and mayor show you on TV.

  • Marcus Anthony

my bad, this is inclusive criticism,i meant to say that i suspect that some people….

  • keke76

Sounds suspect to me! If they new about the rats why not move the baby in another room with them??? DUH! another senseless life of a helpless child gone! needs to be investigated!!!

  • maryann

that poor family.the baby girl jest die and your tacking the baby boy away.they need that baby boy right now in this time of grate morning.i have bean throe it.the family and baby girl are in my prays.

  • Wahnda

Im so horrified by this situation I just cant see how this can happen.. I have a 7 month old son and this is sad.. If anyone has any updates on how this really happened or what happen to the family comment back.

  • Heather

I did not know either parents but did know of them through common friends. I also live in westwego born and raised. Yes they had a horrible rat infestation. Both of the parents family lived in westwego also. So why would they leave their home to go to someone else’s home who had the same problems. Natalie did die of aids & the rat(s) attacked her because of the smell of milk on her. As far as yall who said it was good that the little boy had gotten taking away, while in the states care he was not giving his proper medication doses or amount and ended up in the hospital. So I guess that was good for him too? Some people are so ignorant as to not willing finding out all the facts. Oh and BTW Natalie was NOT the only baby to be attacked by rats. Look it up and educate yourselves!
