A few years ago, an incident like this happened in the Bronx. When the news team picked it up, they showed a picture of the apartment and the place was swarming with rats. in this story, those nasty creatures could’ve attacked in so many numbers the poor baby just didn’t have a chance!

This is just a tragedy any way you look at it.

I guess most of you haven’t seen an army of rats. We’re not talking about the little critters the kids have in school!

I remember waiting for the #2 train in the Bronx. It was nothing short of amazing to see how those mu*****kas would jump all over the tracks and not hit the 3rd rail!! It would literally be hundreds of them!

That shyt used to creep me out!!!

As far as his comment about his daughter being heard after being bitten, the father is merely intimating that she had to be already dead because she would have cried and they would have heard her, i.e. death as a result of S.I.DS. or some other illness that commonly affect children that age, with the rat bites being inflicted during the course of night. Since the report says that the 14-month-old boy is in foster care in the New Orleans area, and the miserable effects of Katrina continue to reverberate through the Gulf states for people who lack resources, I hope that this story brings much-needed attention to the cir*****stances in which too many people in our country live. I hope people see beyond the grotesque to the real problems.

Ok ya’ll. I was going to just lurk on this one, but felt I had to respond. The parents are not to blame for this one. I live in New Orleans and Westwego is a suburb. This was on the News for a couple of days. Apparently, the parents knew there were rats because they would see droppings and hear them in the walls, but they never saw them. The Code Enforcement people have gone out there and found that not only was the home infested with the rats but so was the whole neighborhood. How do you kill rats in your home that you can’t see? Rats were constantly seen going into drain pipes, squeezing through grates etc but that is outside on the street. None were seen in the actual homes though you knew they were there because they could be heard. The whole block (black and white) has gone on record on how well this young couple cared for their children. How well they were loved and how hard the father worked to support his family. This family along with the other residents in the area do not have the means to find other accommodations. There is still an adequate housing shortage here in New Orleans. It is getting better but when 80% of a city is flooded, it will take more than 4 years to get every single domicile and business up to standards and codes. I am not making excuses, I am just stating fact. This whole situation is sad, and I feel for the loss of their child. Apparently the people on this blog who have the negative comments aren’t into investigating anything on their own. News broke this morning that the neighborhood itself is infested. I just pray for the family and the little girl’s soul. Not all of Bossip’s topics need to generate such hatefulness and Bossip, ya’ll really should do investigations prior to posting a topic. You’re getting worse instead of better.

There is more information coming out that the poor baby died of S.I.D.S. and after she expired, the rat or rats started biting her, hence the reason she did not scream….A prominent Rodent research scientist ahs come out and said that most rodents will now attack a live animal due to too much movement. They will most likely attack a dead one though. It’s an “easier target.”

Why is the Dad being called an idiot? I understand entirely what he is saying and it makes sense– maybe I am an idiot too. You have to think first, what attracted the rat to the child? Was it milk on her breath or soiled in her clothes/ crib? And why didnt the child cry out? Infants cry at the first sensation of discomfort- that is all they do, that’s why they cry all the damn time. Every little thing is expressed thru crying- so unless she did cry and the parents ignored it- then I would say an autopsy needs to be done to determine cause of death. She could have been expired at the time the rats got to her. Rats are omnivorous they eat anything, in the wild they eat seeds and nuts to insects. Urban rats will eat food scraps in rubbish and food left lying around which makes me think her body had to be in a state of decay… Who has RATS in their house though- thats pretty crazy!!

I see your point and respect it. Now look at it this way, if you have nowhere else to go, Social Services here is still overwhelmed 4 years later due to the amount of people they have to help. A lot of those people in that situation never thought they would be that way. They owned their homes, had great paying jobs, got their education, raised their children, paid their taxes and then….their city floods. Gone is the great job, gone is the home and everything in it, insurance they paid faithfully every month for 20 – 30 years won’t cover what was lost because they didn’t have flood insurance or if they had that, they didn’t have wind, or if they had that then they didn’t have hurricane; the list goes on and on why a lot of insurance companies didn’t pay. Your education only gets you so far when you are competing with a whole lot of others in your same prediciment. There are still people of many incomes displaced in the city because of the storm. Also, the cost of living has gone up tremendously since Katrina but the pay wages haven’t. When you are poor you already have a waiting list to be on, add to that list a whole bunch of people who under normal cir*****stances wouldn’t be in that position and you have chaos. I am not excusing those parents, but the fact remains, if they could have found better and safer, don’t you think they would have? What about the rest of the people who live in the same rat infested neighborhood? One woman saw a 9 inch rat trying to attack her pet bird. Know all the facts, bring your high and mighty ***** here first and try to find a job, safe housing etc before you get on your soap box and preach. On a side note: the evidence in this case is leaning more and more to show the poor child died from S.I.D.S prior to being bitten by the rat or rats. Oh and Leave-it-be”, the only time the child ever got bitten was this incident. It is not as if she or anyone in the family was bitten before and they continued to live there.

No one knows what the condition of their home is like so why are they being called nasty? If the neighborhood is riddled with rats it takes a city- wide effort to do the abatement. NYC is probably thee most rat infested city, 1Tru Diva- I see the same rats on the #2 train and any other train. At nite them things are running round by the hundreds. NYC had to create an agency just to do pest control thru the dept. of health. So if a city cant control it’s rat infestation- how do you expect a family to do so. Their means were probably meager so moving sounds like a plan but that takes $$. And if they cant afford to upgrade chances are they will be in another rat infested location. The city code enforcement unit should have done something and if they are renters the landlord has a responsibility too!!

Doesn’t make it better of the child died of SIDS and then got ate up by rats. That child had to be dead a long time for the rats not to respond to her moving and gather their clan and start feasting so the parents were sorry for leaving her that long. Furthermore I don’t think rats just up and decide to eat a clean good smelling baby. The baby was probably filthy, surely she wasn’t squeaky clean considering the family lived in a rat infested hell hole. There is no excuse for this and the authorities would be foolish not to remove the 14 year old from the home. Anyone who allows their home to become infested to the point of rats feasting on a dead child need to be punished. And the last time I checked rats don’t like clean environments. True you can have rats even in a relatively clean home but homely families and generations of rats don’t flock to and live in clean homes. Those people are nasty. Sloth is a deadly sin indeed.

You obviously can’t read. First, the other child is 14 MONTHS old, not 14 years old. Second, inside of the home was found to be relatively clean. The structure itself was deplorable. The neighbors went on record regarding how clean, well fed, well cared for and loved both the children were. The city and surrounding areas has had a major rodent, snake and alligator problem since the storm. Hell, a young boy got his arm bitten off, standing next to a c***** in hid neighborhood.

Your comment was well spoken and to the point. Alot of people make judgements and so forth when they have no clue what it is like to still reside in New Orleans post Katrina. Alot of people who were evacuated still have not returned because of situations just like this one. It has been 4 years and you still have residents living in the FEMA trailers, these people proabably took what the crummy gov. offered. The child wouldve began crying instantly after being bit by a rat. Hell, i wouldve began crying! And for Bossip to label these people as “trash” just because they are white and they live in the poorest state of America is not only racist, but it’s ignorant to say the least. The family was negligent by failing to protect their child from rats knowing the home was infested. The fathers comments make it clear that the poor baby was used to fighting off rats and would usually move when she saw one but this time she couldn’t defend herself. The fact that they ate her nose to him signified to the father that she was likely dead before they started feasting but she had to be dead a while for them to eat on her as much as they did. The whole thing is a hot ***** mess any way you slice it and you look real foolish trying to come up with a plausible explanation for a helpless baby being eaten up by rodents in her own bed. And they probably put the baby in her crib after they found her eaten, she was probably sleeping in their room on the floor with a fan blowing on her. Three is nothing wrong with that except WHEN YOUR HOME IS INFESTED WITH RATS!!! How in the hell did the rats get in the baby’s crib and why didn’t the parents put her in a place where the rats couldn’t get to her while they werent watching? So now rats are crawling up cribs to get to clean and well taken care of babies? STFU.

@ They Killed Mike- Nope, not their cousin, no relation, I don’t even know these people. What I do know is what has been reported on the news here thus far. Bossip did not post it all. If Bossip would have posted everything that has come out about the case, I would have not said a word. I am against biased and slanted reporting. I prefer to know all the facts before judging, I thought everyone felt the same way. I am also not a city official. I am a United States Marine who not only is stationed here, but this is also my hometown and where I will retire next year. I am loyal to my city, even in it’s present state of condition. The point I was making about these people is: does it matter that they were white? (and before you go there, not I am NOT white), it is one thing to live in a rat infested home on purpose then to live in one because you cannot do any better. It is a whole ‘nother thing to have to live in a rat infested neighborhood. Hindsight is 20/20. The point is that these people lost a child and to top it off, the child’s body was mutilated by rodents. They are dealing with a lot already. The neighbors as well as the police and everyone else have gone on record to say that the children were well care for. There was trash in the yard that needed to be picked up but inside the home it was basically clean, the structure was dilapidated, but they did keep a clean home.
As for the state of my city, yes, there is much more that needs to be done. At the same time, there has been a lot already done. My city has been in existence for 291 years, we will overcome this just as other places have overcome their challenges. We will be ok, it just takes time.

When we were younger, my family and i lived down the street from a poultry and produce market that had to be shut down due to a rat issue. Basically because
the owner had a heart attack and had been dead for days before anyone made it there business to tend to the store. Needless to say when they unlock the gates, they were in for the biggest suprise of their life. rats everywhere!!!! Alot of people from my neighborhood had began complaing to HUDD and their landlords regarding the issue. My mom was one of them. But the last straw was when we found one in our house. My poor dog was behind the washing machine crying like she wasnt 50 lbs! I go to check on her and sure enough, there goes one of those little suckers looking like he is ready to go toe to toe with my big ol dog! We moved out the following week. But unfortunately guys, everybody can not move out the following week, some are subjected to live in this turmoil. While i will admit that if i knew i had a rodent infestation issue, my babies would sleep in the bed with me at all times, we really dont know what happen behind this infants’ death to even speculate. God rest her soul and i pray her parents escape these foul living condtions so that they may get their other child back oneday.

spuddie ripped somebody a new *****hole….but she is right, people shouldnt judge without more facts…there are people that live in those type of conditions everyday, not by choice, but because they have to…rats or mice can live in people homes for a long time without being seen because they usually live in the walls and come out for food while evrybody is asleep….before coming to your conclusion about the situation ask yourself some questions…

1. why would anyone ‘choose’ to stay in a house infested by rats?

2. why would the rat attack a breathing/moving baby?

3. was the baby sleeping in the crib, instead of with the parents, because they sleep on the floor?

4. what were the conditions inside the home?

5. have the parents ever been cited for child neglect?

…only God can judge, but if you must, imagine you being the one persecuted

@ Spuddie–

I’m glad to see you posted more of the story than BOSSIP. Even before you did, I knew there was more to this story than what I read.

I thought about the post Katrina conditions and how the area is still affected.

I was raised in the city (NY) and I know firsthand the conditions rats can fester but you do not have to live in deplorable conditions for rats to thrive!

All it takes is two–

As far as people getting upset at the parents? I understand your anger but think for a minute, maybe these people couldn’t leave their habitat.

Don’t you think people would do better if they could?

I’m positive in my thinking that if these people could’ve moved to a better environment, they would’ve.

Please don’t degrade these folks. Unless you live in the N.O., you probably don’t fully understand what they go through daily just to survive.

I know I don’t!

Reading some of these comments let’s me know that there are quite a few people that really didn’t (and STILL don’t) understand the catastrophic conditions of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

I visited N.O. shortly after the Hurricane.

People–

What you saw on television was NOTHING!!

They actually marked homes with an “X” to signify it had been checked for bodies AND some STILL had dead bodies overlooked!

The streets! The people!!!

Just to find adequate drinking water was nothing short of a miracle.

OMG!!!

I have never or will I want to witness such dispair or hopelessness for the rest of my natural life AGAIN!!

The after effects affect sooooo many people–even to this day!

I’ll leave this post with this–

if this was not a case of neglect, why doesn’t this happen more often? There are many areas in US that have rat infestations and babies aren’t eaten up on a regular basis. The baby would have screamed.

Spuddie: Thanks for your comment. I wish everyone would read it. To “leave-it-alone” You need to re-read what Spuddie said. Apparently, the child died from SIDS or something else and the rats attacked. The bites marks were probably after the child died. The parents probably thought the infant was safest in the crib. I know I didn’t know rats could climb.

Folks race has nothing to do with this. Think income. They could be living in subsidized housing. If so they couldn’t just get up and move. There is a process. How about blaming the owner of the home. Anyway, once rodents are in, they are in. A trap would only get one at a time.

I live in New Orleans and the rodent problems are awful. Chances are she was attacked by nautria. Westwego has infestions of both rats and nautria. It’s sad that people are judging this young couple based on race. They’ve never hurt they’re children and social services said they’re oldest child showed no signs of neglect. Chances are the baby died of SIDS (crib death). For those who keep asking why the baby didn’t sleep with the parents it’s because a baby isn’t suppose to sleep in an adult bed. Although people do allow it there is a higher risk for SIDS when a baby sleeps with an adult. It’s 2009 and it is sad that instead of sending prayers to their family ya’ll are calling them white trash. As for ppl calling the father stupid because he said the baby would have waved her arms or something. It’s true I have a 3month old niece a fly flew on her and she waved her hands. If the baby would have been alive she would have cried or moved a body part. The cry alone would have scared the rats away. So she was most likely already dead.

To everyone on this board, I apologize for going off earlier, that was not my intention and I really didn’t want to get gutter in my responses, however some people do not understand anything else. I just feel it is important to know all of the facts before commenting negatively on any situation. It drives me when it is one of us doing it. We blame white folks for a lot of the dirt they have done, yet we turn around and do it ourselves. We have to be better than them, we are better than them. I put on this uniform everyday. For the last 22 years I have defended people’s right to speak, hell, I have gone to other countries to protect their right. All I am saying is please speak with intelligence and based on fact. Judge no one until you have all of the facts and even then, just pray for them. Again, I apologize for the vulgarity I used when I went off on “I Knew It”. Not much can make this female Marine loose all military bearing, but that ***** right there….
Oh and think about this: if a rat can climb a pole, run across telephone wires and climb up trees, what makes you think they can’t climb up a crib? Oh and Nicci504- yeah we have a lot of nutria but they are vegatarians, they may fight and beat up most dogs but the still eat plants. It’s those claws on those bad boys that hurt the dogs they fight.

Where there is a rat infestation, you must be careful at all times. Rats have been known to bite on grown live adults while they were sleeping. A little baby would be no different, except maybe they tend to sleep deeper, than an adult would. Anyways, calling an exterminator for one house in an infested neighborhood is not gonna do them any good. The city must get involved somehow. You can try to put out the traps, and what not but its not going to make them go away. Especially if they have nested in your walls, attic, and basement. Damn things are worse than roaches. My heart really goes out to this family, and I do hope they are able to reunite with their child soon.

These damn hillbillies! When you have children they are your 1st priority. They knew they had a super rat infested problem and lived in rat central, therefore all family members should have been in the same room together at all times and never left their small children alone. Especially if they had limited resources and no where else to go. If this area was so infested with these nasty varmints, then why didn’t other families with children report attacks on their kids? If people want to come to the defense of these parents, than so be it. Everybody is entitled to their opinion, But I’m sorry this doesn’t sound right whatsoever. I have friends that live in Louisiana and even they had problems with this story. That poor baby, I can’t even imagine. How the hell is a baby gonna fight off a swarm of rats, that are lookin for the nearest buffet. The father needs a rat shoved up his ***** for that comment! They say the baby might have been dead before the rats got to it….does that make it better? I think not. I feel sorry for the mother that lost her child and how she must be suffering, but I also think the parents got used to living with this problem and didn’t take better measures.

I don’t think its safe to have poisons like that around a baby so young. That is dangerous to humans and when you have a toddler and a new born just small traces can kill.

Its not the lanlords fault though @pumkin..wtf..I would move out or call an exterminator or something. They put that baby in that position. Pumkin I hope you never become a parent because you have no damn sense. Its the lanlords fault that you were infested with rats so bad they ate your baby to death????

I’ve seen a rat before, those things are so nasty!!!

I had just finished mopping my kitchen floor & had the patio door & screen open.

I Walked in the living room and my cat was standing there with this big @ss fat rat in her mouth and let it go.

I swear that thing started running after me, I took off like a bullet screamin & hollerin.

I was not goin on no counter cuz I knew them things could climb. I ran to the front door & I swear I couldnt get it open.

I kept unlocking the bottom lock & lockin the top one & vice versa all the while screamin.

One of my neighbors heard me popped his head over the patio wall & said gul you aite.

By then I had my convinced myself of it & told him a rat was trying to attack me LMAO.

So he hopped over the wall, came in & saw the cat was in front of the couch with her head underneath it.

He moved the couch from the wall and the rat shot out the patio door along with the cat.

He walked to the front door,looked at me like I was crazy and said you aite?

Here’s the worst part, when he opened the door there were about 2 or 3 people standing there, and the neighbors upstairs were outside.

They asked him, whats goin on, he said man nothin man, gul crazy screamin over a rat, thought somebody wuz killin her *****.

This is sooo sad. Thanks Spuddie for the enlightenment. I had a feeling that something else was going on. I do believe that if the baby was alive when they attacked her she would have at least cried. Maybe the baby was in the crib because the parents were sleeping on the floor. In my opinion, they tried to keep the baby away from harm while they were stuck in those conditions. Rats climb everything. Maybe the rats could smell the ’sense of death’ and they attacked the baby. I do believe that if she cried or moved, they would have left her alone. This is a sad sad story. I hope this brings light to that community, especially that neighborhood so the city officials can correct it ASAP!!!

It is easy for bloggers to rush to judgement with this couple, but if you dont know the facts stop with the judgement. This area is apart of New Orleans and if you dont reside here you wouldn’t know what the cost of living is here. After the storm you are blessed to have a roof over your head some of us are still displaced or under Claiborne bridge. With that being said this couple lived where they could AFFORD to. Second of all both of them are hearing impaired so they could not hear as well as you. Be carfeul of how you judge because this same situation could happen to you. Do you invite roaches or rats in your home? I didn’t think so. If you don’t live here you don’t know what we are facing. Come visit New Orleans and not for Mardi Gras, drive around areas other than what the governor and mayor show you on TV.

this happened to my parents my lil sister died in her sleep s.i.d.s the rats smelled her death we lived upstairs in a flat and yes may dad blamed my mom but it was not her fault it was no ones fault lets say that my lil sis was next to my mom sleeping the rats would have still smelled her death oh and we lived in detroit you dont have to have a dirty house for rats to come in your home it can be spotless and they will still get in your house if they smell death

The rats did not kill this baby. The baby died and the rats started eating the dead body. My fiance’s uncle died in his basement, and was found, in less than an hour, with rat-bite marks over his body (including his nose).
Please read and investigate before you judge people (Bossip included!) Not only did these poor people lose their newborn infant, they now have to be portrayed as irresponsible “white trash” because they were too poor to move to a place where the landlord cared about his tenants. Sad!

I suspect that the some people just seem to exhibit an inability to comprehend inarticulate, human speech. The father, who granted is not gifted with the most proficient oratory, thinks that his child was ALREADY DEAD!And S.I.D.S is probably the culprit, lets wager that that will probably be the cause of death or some common infant affliction for the babies age. Can anyone of these geniuses who seem to have trouble understanding animal behavior and their feeding habits, the impact of katrina as it pertains to rodents and other feral animals, please explain why in Borneo the world health organization sprayed insect repellent to eliminate the *****roach infestation but only succeeded in calling all of the cats! Don’t think too hard, oh yeah and u should probably praise those same rat culprits for having been the driving force behind the FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION! So before u open that can good, eat those hot dogs or sausage, well hell eat anything readily available in ur kitchen, put down your fork and google “THE JUNGLE”, by Upton Sinclair to see how these rodent friends of ours help influence our Governmental policy as it relates to health and our food GRADING SYSTEM AND INSPECTION!
