Camille is a designer/stylist out of L.A. and has styled magazines like J’adore along with many others. We got the real deal from her about the African influenced styles she uses :
Bossip: Who would you like to work with?
Well of course the list is long but I hope to very soon work with some of my favorite artists like Erykah Badu, J Davey, Muhsinah, Santi Gold; the list goes on and on! There are so many talented sistahs right now…… with great personal style. I see pieces on and off the runways and immediately think of who would look amazing in them. There are also many many photographers whose work I admire that I hope to work with in the future. Too many to name.
Bossip: When, where, and how did you get started?I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I’ve been passionate about fashion since I can remember and at 9 years old I decided I was going to be a fashion designer when I grew up. I got my degree in Textiles & Clothing and Marketing and soon realized it wasn’t design I wanted to do, it was wardrobe styling and fashion journalism. I wanted to start my own fashion and style magazine and this is still a goal. My good friend owns a successful modeling agency in LA and I started working with her models and began developing contacts and building my portfolio. From there, my work spoke for itself and business grew. I’ve been blessed to work with and maintain great relationships with so many talented people. I’ve been exposed to many different cultures and styles and have never been conventional in my personal style or way of thinking and this has always translated into an intriguing edge in my work. I am SO excited about the direction of high fashion and street style right now because anything goes! There’s no time like the present to express your individuality and I’m glad to be doing what I’m doing right now.
Bossip: Who are some of your favorite designers?
Dries Van Notten, Jonathan Sanders, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Duro oluwo, Balenciaga, Matthew Ames… The list goes on and on. I’m also VERY inspired by design aesthetics of traditional cutlures like the use of color by the Zulu and Maassai tribes in Africa, beading patterns of Native American attire, and origami-like construction of traditional Japanese wear.
PM. What is your goal for 2009??
To continue to grow; travel abroad while discovering new cutting edge designers, artists and cultures to be inspired by. I’d like to work with the artists, models and photographers I enjoy and see more of my editorials published in the magazines I read daily. Like everyone else, I want my business to be the best it’s ever been!Bossip: What was your prized first purchase in fashion as a youth or as an adult??
Well this wasn’t a “first” purchase but 2 years ago I found a Duro Olowu dress at the Salvation Army for $8! Duro Olowu is a Nigerian-born designer out of London who uses vintage and African fabrics to construct his pieces. His pieces sell for up to $3500!! I shop thrift and vintage stores weekly but this was, by far, my most prized purchase yet.Bossip: Do you read Bossip??(don’t have to answer, optional question)Every single day!! It’s part of my morning ritual. haha.
Camille’s styles are in a bunch of your daily advertisement, but most people don’t know it. Fashion and designing is her blood.
