Tyler Perry Brings Christmas in July for Philly Kids That Were Kicked Out of the Pool

Madea-TP

Madea went and got her “glock” of money that is… Tyler Perry learned of the story with the 65 kids in Philadelphia that were kicked out of the pool, and he decided to pay for the kids to go to Disney World on August 1st.

I was told that one of these children, a seven year old, asked her mother if she was “too black to be in a pool.” How do you answer that? Again, it broke my heart and I wanted to do something, and I feel like you all would want to do something, too. So what I did was on Aug 1st thru 3rd, I’m sending these kids to Disney World, and then to a Disney water park. I want them to know that for every act of evil that a few people will throw at you, there are millions more who will do something kind for them. This is all about the kids.

This made me so angry.

Since Michael Jackson died I have not watched the news. I have just been so disgusted at how the mainstream media has riddled this family with disrespect, and no matter what anyone, you or I included, might have thought of him, the truth of the matter is

-the man was still a human being and his kids and family deserve some privacy and space. And I know that I’m not the only one that feels this way, so I purposely kept the TV off. Anyway, I was walking through the house, and I don’t know how this TV was on, but I saw a little boy on the news crying his eyes out. So I turned it up. Here is this kid talking about being kicked out of the Valley Swim Club outside Philadelphia because he was black. Did you hear me? I said, “No way, this can’t be! It’s 2009. I don’t believe this!” But, I know it happens even in this year of Obama.

As I listened to the story, the anchorperson went on to talk about a woman named Althea Wright. This young lady started a non-profit called Creative Steps to help inner-city children. And apparently she had booked the Valley Swim Club’s pool and paid for it to be used by the children throughout the summer. As we all know, this is such a great thing. During the summer our kids can get into a lot of trouble if they don’t have something creative to do. Anyway, as the story went on, I was shocked to find out that it wasn’t just him but 65 children in all, black and Hispanic kids, that were kicked out of the pool. You should Google this story and read it online for yourself. It’s crazy! I went from being mad to being furious.

The news reporter went on to say that the president of the club and its members said, and I quote, “We don’t want to change the complexion of our club.” The president refunded the money of the children and asked them not to come back. WHAT?! I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I said I have to do something for these children. I can’t let them think that they are inferior because of the color of their skin. Then that night I saw the president of the Valley Swim Club on the news again saying that he misspoke and that it was a safety issue and the club wasn’t able to accommodate so many children. But the children themselves reportedly said that members were taking their kids out of the pool, and that they were saying things like, “Why are they here?” and “They’re black,” even insinuating that these kids would steal or maybe hurt their children.

Now get this. A few days later I catch the story again on CNN. This time the club was inviting the kids to come and swim. WHAT?! I’m confused. If you refunded the money because there was not enough room in the pool and it was a safety issue then why are you asking the same 65 kids to come back?

This is awful, and for anyone that has grown up in the inner-city, you know that one small act of kindness can change your life. These kids see the images of President Obama on TV and then they see the drug dealers and thugs on the corner. Which do you think is more their reality? One act of kindness, one person telling them that they are special, one moment of encouragement can make them move mountains. I know it to be true because I was one of them. They don’t need to be called names and be told that they are less than, because of the color of their skin or because of where they come from.

That’s why I’m telling you this. Since you all have put me in the position to be able to do something I feel like by me doing this we are all doing it together. This is all about the kids. So, thank you for letting me do this. Thank you so much. And do me a favor please. When you see these kids coming through the airport, (I’m sure you won’t be able to miss them. I imagine they are going to be super excited) when you see them in the park and in the hotel, let’s show them a whole lot of love and respect. Show them that they are just as good as anyone else. And show them that they can do or be anything they want to be no matter what anyone says!

Thanks,

Tyler Perry

    hannibal

Can your broke azz do any better for these kids at the moment then flap your gums than what Tyler is just offer them… This is way better than spending time at this country clubs pool… HE is taking 65 kids and there parent probably and most likely will give them a 7 days trips which most of there parents can not afford…

  • I AM LEGEND ( A Wise Man Told Me Dont Argue With Fools)

Will Smith is from Philly and he aint step up 2 the plate for these kids and he got BIG money

  • Jade Silver (Anthony Hamilton perfornming live 9 August @ the Coca Cola Dome, JHB)

Tyler Perry has done a great thing for those children. It saddens me that in this day and age people are still so racist.

  • Resurrected

Motherf***er you will never give me permission to do and say Shit… I never give my power away to idiots like U…

  • Golden Goddess☀

IGNORE HANNIBAL HE JUST WANTS ATTENTION.LOL

thats very nice of Tyler Perry :)

  • Julia

Let’s not forget that there were inner city latin kids among the black kids. The black kids weren’t the only victims of the discrimination. And not all white people are ignorant.

  • arissa

That was awful nice of him!

  • Lady Minerva

    Good deal, Tyler!

  • NitaBonita

i was shocked and appalled when i read this story a few weeks ago. tyler perry has done a beautiful thing for those children. i saw the little boy on the news crying and my heart instantly sank.

  • Jay the Real One

@ I AM LEGEND ( A Wise Man Told Me Dont Argue With Fools)

well thank god everybody doesn’t prove their point like you

  • Resurrected

    Hannibal

Who give away something free to someone what they do now want for them to have but a people pleaser and a manipulator and I do not see that in Tyler Perry but we are all entitled to our opinion, it’s not like he is taken criminals to Disney world but some young under privilege kids and that sounds a lot… This is a moment that they will never forget and it will teach them about being helpful and showing kindness to others…

  • PUSSYCATFUN

GOOD FOR TYLER…WELL SAID AND WELL DONE BIG BRUH!

THIS YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF RASCISM…AND WHO EVER SAID RACISM IS IN THE PAST CAN KISS MY ASS1

  • Faith without works is dead

I am very happy TP did this! He is always so inspirational in his blogs. Way to uplift our beautiful black and brown children TP! Mucho kudos!

  • RAWRR

That was noble of Tyler Perry :D

  • Jamaican Princess

That’s awesome! And after those kids get back from Disney, their parents should sue that club!

  • KENNEDY

I wish I could say I was surprised. Most WP are ignorant they just hide it better than us. Thank you Tyler Perry. These Hispanic and Black kids will never forget this. Ever.

  • Sanjor

Tyler Perry did include the latin kids involved. No one forgot them.

  • Jade Silver (Anthony Hamilton perfornming live 9 August @ the Coca Cola Dome, JHB)

@ Resurrected… You will never win with Hannibal. He’s unique

  • mzsweetface

I think that is a nice gesture but maybe TP could have just had a pool built for the kids so that they don’t have to travel to different locations.

  • KocaKola

They should be shut down. A simple apology and invite will not take away the emotional scarring these children have suffered.

  • as seen on t.v.

I think it’s wonderful what Tyler P is doing for those kids…More people of color with substantial wealth should start putting their money where their mouths are…Maybe someone can open some minority swim clubs…Some places for our kids to go and feel comfortable and not be made to feel like they aren’t wanted…

  • Shellboogie

I think what Tyler is doing is so awesome. May god continue to bless you. Wow!

  • goons

tyler perry, you have be crying my eyes out in the office..thank you for putting these white f*cks to shame..we need more like you and hope more will join..love it!!! my god continue to bless you!!!!

    Tyler Perry is da man!!!

  • sepia830

Obvious publicity stunt. Oh well, the kids get a trip to Disney World out of it. Enjoy!

  • http://www.myspace.com/gazfynest **SEVEN DAYS**

Great job !! I can only imagine what those kids were thinking when that took place

  • Emma

That was a very nice gesture. I hope the kids have a great time.

  • Whatever

That is a wonderful trip to give those children. Most of them may have never been outside of their state or even on a plane. @ the end of the day, Tyler Perry is doing something. He is giving them a great gift & life long lesson.

  • john hope franklin

t.p. i cant even hate on you for this one…even though you have the oprah corporate hook-up…lol

  • Hannibal

65 KIDS, DAMN MICHAEL JACKSON ONLY HAD ABOUT 80, GOOD JOB TYLER!

  • VJ

This is a great positive thing Mr. Perry did. I commend him for being moved enough by the situation to do something about it. No need to start asking why no one else did it, no need to bring negatitivity into the equation. I will take it for what it is…..a kind act by a kind human being.

  • duhh

Now this is how (Black) people should treat one another. Instead of profanity or violence….get back at ignorance with intelligence and a big heart. Tyler Perry is one hell of a stand-up guy!

  • CHEDMO

Hatred is always ugly…but love is always the conqueror!!! Thanks Tyler.

  • “Hi Hater” is a Bossip staff member commenting and talking shit!

    Cool

  • ColoredTalk

That’s what I’m talking about! Listen folks. He should publicize what he’s done. Absolutely. He is a rich and powerful Black man who does plenty good all the time. Some folks may have given money, but they did so privately. Some because they did not want to take sides, or wanted to appear “unpolitical.” Believe me, when celebrities speak, people listen. And sometimes it hurts their career. Tyler Perry didn’t need this, believe me. He wanted to make a public, political statement and he did. More power to the brother. Those kids, just like he said, will remember the day at the pool. More than that, they will remember that a Black man said wipe your tears “chirren,” were going to Disney Land!

  • JB (VICK IS FREE!!!!!)

    Great Job for Tyler Perry.

And whoever said that WIll Smith didn’t step up and he is from Philly, made a damn good point. He should have been first to the plate and built them a center with a pool. Hell if him and Jada can build a school , he can build a pool for the inner city kids

  • ReBeLR

TP is a very good dude. I hate how people diss him.

  • donella

TYLER PERRY IS A REAL DOWN TO EARTH PERSON THAT KNOWS WHAT IT IS TO STRUGGLE AND SUCCEED, HIS HEART IS LARGE AND IF I HAD PAPER AS LONG AS HIS I WOULD HAVE DID THE SAME, IT’S A SHAME WHAT THOSE KIDS HAD TO FACE AND IT’S GOOD TO SEE THAT THEY KNOW IT IS SOME POSITIVITY IN THE WORLD.
THUMBS UP TYLER, GOD BLESS YOU

  • philly

those kids will love to go to disney world. im just glad the camp contacted the media about this issue b/c if happens often. we got to support each other, so that was good of tyler perry. :)

  • Caramellatte30

TP that is so awesome! And for all the haters who have negative and ignorant things to say about it, BLOGGERS PLEASE DON’T ENTERTAIN. IGNORE THEIR ASSES! NEXT

  • s.i.y.t

bless his heart. angel on earth he is….

  • Resurrected

Well as long as the kids are happy and safe..

  • Kierah

As Grandma says, the Lord dreams bigger dreams for you that you can dream for yourself.
Those kids thought the highlight of their summer would be playing Marco Polo in a country club pool. The real gift is a trip to Disney. What a come-up! And they couldn’t have received this blessing without the trial.
Thank you Tyler Perry for being a vessel!

  • Loving Life

That was so kind of Tyler. For all those who don’t know how much Will has helped Philly, please do your research b4 u run ur mouth. Will and Jada pay tuitions, feed the homeless, fund summer school programs and provide low income housing to LOTS of lower income residents.

  • Mika

I love Tyler Perry! Good job Tyler! BTW-Giving the kids a trip to Disney World is better than doing nothing. Some people will have something to say no matter what you do…

  • Dr. Heather

I applaud Tyler Perry for doing this! But with all of these rapper and baller fools and all of the other entertainers out there, you’d think Tyler wouldn’t be the only one to reach out to these children to help make this better for those kids…

I agree with whoever stated above me that instead of ‘making it rain’ for one night in a strip club, put that $100,000 toward something that will help someone’s life and self-esteem in the long run…

  • the_one

I hope that they contact a civil rights attorney right away and file a class action suit. If its a private club it doesn’t matter as long as they offer others in the general public the opportunity to use the facility under section 1981 of the CRA they can sue them. I would take this case pro bono because this is some straight b.s. Philly of all places.

  • Hannibal

    @the_one

    CORRECT!!!

  • No u can’t be boyfriend #2!

At least somebody decided to help out! Way to go Tyler!

‘Disney World’ is a childs dream!

    Tyler

You are going to be blessed ten fold!! You have been giving back for the longest time. Even before you were famous. Keep up the giving spirit!

  • tg

Isn’t that Sweet of him. That’s how it should be – we should look for out for each other, IF WE CAN. It’s bad enough when a lot of us have to suffer injustices and discriminations when we get older, but no one has to be that mean to children. I feel those people aren’t going to have any good luck after that stunt.

  • Ea ima boss

Anyone who has anything negative to say a purely dumb, granted its a tax write-off, but at the end of the day, its still someone showing kids that I came from the same space you came from and I can now afford to pay for your trip like its nothing, my money is that long.

You got these dumb a55 people on these blog sites who have nothing to do but say stupid ish. Fake blog thugs, are you doing it for entertainment, because them dumb as5 comments actually go thru your mind.

No wonder why people think we are inferior if that’s how you really think and carry yourself, like a dumb a55.

I don’t like TP but hey if my whole summer got shattered by something crazy like this and i got an invitation to Disney, I would remember both events for the rest of my life, but also be proud that someone like me came out a rescued.

  • I dont get it!

There are enough rich, black basketball players, Rappers, record producers, business people, footballers, entertainers and others who can build rec. centers and pools in all inner-city neighborhoods. Oprah built one and so can they. Rich black people are too damn selfish for words. They have the money and they can use it for a tax write-off, there is no excuse for them not to help the people who supported them and made them rich. There are so many rich black people in this country it’s wonderful, but it is tragic how they refuse to pitch in and help less fortunate black people.

Thank you mr. perry. I feel renewed. GOD HAS ALL POWER!!! HE WILL SHOW UP AND SHOW OUT . THIS IS NOT ABOUT RELIGION OR WHAT CHURCH YOU GO TO . THIS IS ABOUT BELIEVING IN SOMETHING YOU CAN NOT SEE

  • POPPA SMURF

Doggone it. I need to get up wid T. Perry. Just got turned down for financing on a Lexus truck, its cause I’m black. I need him to buy one for me, to show me the racist refusal for financing on da truck, can be washed away by him copping dat truck for me ;)

  • POPPA SMURF

It is a noble gesture on his part fo real. Props to him for looking out for da kids!

    that’s wasup

  • Ummmmmm….

I’m not a fan of his work, but I have to give it to him for stepping in with those kids!! Props to you Tyler Perry

Now….at the same time, I don’t think people should be so quick to dismiss other black celebs and make this man a saint. There are some who have started foundations, donate HUGE sums of money ANONYMOUSLY so keep that in mind. Just because one person chooses to help others in the media spotlight and others don’t, doesn’t make one better than the other – - THEY ARE STILL HELPING!

  • mrsprettyncurvy

That was a very sweet gesture!! I’ve always liked, Tyler Perry. To those saying, “He should have done something else,” why don’t YOU do something else. He can do whatever he likes with his money, just like we do each and every day.

    -Peace!

December 19, 2008 by Tim Saunders

Will Smith gave away over US$1.3 million to charitable causes over the last year.

Along with his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, the actor donated the money to a variety of religious, civic and arts groups through his Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation.

The single biggest contribution of $250,000 went to the Yesha Ministries of Philadelphia, a born-again Christian-based organization run by Reverend James Robinson. Another $200,000 went to a Christian ministry in Los Angeles called Living Waters. The Church Of Scientology religion also received hefty donations from the couple, with $67,500 going to the New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Fund, $50,000 to the group’s Celebrity Centre in Hollywood and $5,000 to ABLE.

The Smiths also donated thousands of dollars to a Los Angeles mosque, other Christian-based schools and churches, and to the Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Center in Israel. They also gave $25,000 to the Progeria Research Foundation. Progeria is a disease that causes rapid aging.

In May, the couple also gave $1million to help set up a school for children of all religions.

“About 10 years ago Jada and I started dreaming about the possibility of creating an ideal educational environment, where children could feel happy, positive and excited about learning,” he said.

  • Whut???

It’s a nice gesture and they will have alot of fun, but doesn’t solve the core problem. We need programs to put swim clubs with attached youth centers back in underpriviledge neighborhoods to keep children busy during their summers and weekends.

  • Mia

Yes he could have built them a pool, but would it have been ready this summer no, and who says the property the center is on want’s them to have a pool, and can the center afford the extra liability insurance that comes along with the pool??? Stop being so negative and be greatful that someone cares about these children, and is trying to rite a wrong

I was touched by what Tyler Perry is doing for these children. This is the problem with folk, he’s coming out of his pocket unselfishly to give these kids a great memory that will hopefully overshadow what they have experienced and some of you are complaining saying that he can do more….WTF? What are you doing for inner-city kids? Also, I think Philly is particially to blame for shutting down the public pools and other activities to where the camp had to go out of the city just to swim. BTW, f*ck that racist Swim Club. These kids need to “change the complexion” of your racist environment. Nothing good will come out of this for you. I pray that your children will not grow up to think the way that you do.

I have ALWAYS loved and supported Tyler Perry; his personal story has been an epic source of inspiration to many, and now that he is so successful, how he is using his celebrity platform should be the Celebrity: How To Channel Your Success Meaningfully® 101 Guide for all others in his ilk, IMO.

Reading this article, my level of respect for Tyler Perry for both his sentiments vis a vis this story (which are a complete reflection of my own!), and his actions (sending these beautiful children to Disney) has been raised by quantum leaps!

I love you Tyler Perry, keep being the inspiration that you are to all of us. :)

This is insane. This is why Tyler Perry will always receive a thumbs up from me. He’s talented but more importantly he’s thoughtful. Where are the law suits….surely there is one in the making. Where are all the activist at, surely they are having meetings behind closed doors right now concerning the issue. This sounds like some segregated hypocrisy from the 1960′s. I keep picturing in my mind a “no colors allowed,” sign out in front of that pathetic establishment and those human beings having the courage to step in. That’s completely wonderful….if courage needed to be a factor in booking a damn swimming pool site for some children. But it shouldnt have to be!!!!!!!!! It should be a genuwine and accurate transaction between the business and the buyer. This really upsets me and yes there should be a law suit in action. This goes to show that racism still runs rapidly through our country tagging children on both sides of the totem pole and that is truly sad.

  • SCSunshine

Kudos to you, Mr. Perry. I’m sure those children will never forget either experience. Thank you for using your gift to bring happiness to others. I wish there were ten of you! Others, in your position, should take note. Let’s reclaim our children, schools and communities. I am inspired!

    ==============

    YES.
Oprah is a public figure, part of whose platform and rise to fame has been both speaking on and opening up the debate on the issue of race in this country.

This story, which if you recall made national headlines when it first broke, IS exactly one of the issues which Oprah should have been expected to comment upon, based on paragraph one above.

Oprah had a show about Domestic Violence following the Chris Brown/Rihanna Fenty incident which also garnered national headlines back in February-DV also being one of her platform issues.

People therefore are interested in Oprah’s opinions on matters such as these, which- as a public figure- Oprah herself made PERTINENT to own public image.

Kudos to you Mr. Perry. For those out of touch idiots, a community center, much like Rome, cannot be built in a dayum day.

Certainly among those 65 children the opportunity to travel by plane, leaving the same dayum city they see every friggin day, to see Mickey, Minnie and the gang will be a childhood memory to treasure.

Long-term, working with other Philly locals to provide something more permanent would be beautiful.

  • Nicole

It amazing that there is still racial profiling in america today “2009″. Damn shame that these kids will remember this for the rest of their lives. Amazing that one would get on national tv and make a comment as “changing the color of the club/pool” whatever it was…Too pissed off to remember. There are indeed good people out here and as an African American female Thanks Mr. Tyler Perry. Thank you Thank you Thank you. Where are the other celebs out there. Mr. Perry will continue to receive his blessings. It’s not about him receiving his blessings it’s about him coming forward to show those 65 kids that there is someone that cares. Just pisses me off to know that that evil man got on tv and made those comments and then tried to bring the kids back. He needs to stand in front of traffic…

I think it was great what Tyler Perry did for these young kids…I’m happy to see Tyler hasn’t forgot where he came from…we need more active black leaders in this country. Not the ones that want the spotlight but that really do care about our people… I’m so happy for these kids like they are mine…I hope they have the most fun they ever had…

LOL @ the people who are trying to be educated, but yet don’t know how to leave a comment…too funny! Wow! EPIC FAIL!

  • 2dimplzs

This was very unselfish of TP to do this for the kids. I wish more people like him who are in a position to do more would do the same. On the flip side of that there ARE a lot of celebrities who do things behind the scenes and don’t want the attention for giving or doing something for the community. There is nothing wrong with that and we don’t HAVE to know what every public figure donates or gives to charity either. What matters is that GOD sees the geneorosity and only he knows whether if it was from the heart or done for other selfish reasons. Nothing anyone does is ever good enough for some people and it’s sad. There are some very hateful, sad, misreable people on this message board. Keep your self hate and venom to yourselves! It’s not funny and no one cares!!!

  • LexRuger202

This is a great ending to to a bad story. Black people have to stand together for our children. We have to teach them that no one is better than them and they are not better than anyone else. Our kids are talked down to. Its not right. We have to elevate our children to understand their true potential. If they are pushed down, or if they make a mistake, we have to take then under our wings and teach them that its part of life and to get up and keep on trying. They have to know we have their backs no matter what.

  • Ms. M

Hannibal this is who you are type of personality in which there is no care or concern for others and in which there is a pattern of impulsive acts, lack of remorse, and criminality.

Tyler Perry this is who you are- Quiet, reflective, and idealistic. Interested in serving humanity. Well-developed value system, which they strive to live in accordance with. Extremely loyal. Adaptable and laid-back unless a strongly-held value is threatened. Usually talented writers. Mentally quick, and able to see possibilities. Interested in understanding and helping people.

Wow, big ups to the idiots for letting everyone else know you’re idiots…lol…your job here is done! Anyway, like a few of you have stated, this was indeed a true act of kindness. Whether Tyler Perry did it or someone else had beat him to it, it was kind and from the heart. He didn’t have to give anything but he paid for one heck of a time at the one place most kids dream of going. To all those people that said that he should’ve built a pool, how much have you given back to your community? ????….how much was that? Thought so! Way to go Tyler, that’s why your blessings will continue to fall down upon you, keep on keeping on!!

  • UpsToTheIdiots

    @ Wanjiru

After going back over some of the comments posted here, I had to come back to tell you this… I just love your response to all the idiots that come here, what seems like, on an hourly basis to spread their diseased thoughts amongst people that obviously don’t give a flying *bleep*. All the profanity and insults…for what? Because of lack of education and home training!! They have no other way to express themselves besides desperately attempting to walk on other people’s backs or beating them down with cruel words. I was always taught that that’s how you can tell the degree of someone’s ignorance. Just read what is being typed and how many times they’re here to type it…sad, sad, sad! Best way to stop the madness is to ignore people with small thoughts and even smaller words…if you stop adding the fuel, the fire will eventually burn out!

  • Ms. Toki

Thanks Tyler, as adults and persons of African descent we must call it like it is. We have spent enough time Uncle Tomming and Aunt Thomasining. U know it was racism just like the Gate’s incident (a man in his own home and must justify it). We are always asked to forgive, but we dare not forget!!! Those children will never forget that incident the rest of their lives. What impact will that have on the rest of their lives, and the decisions they make? All the effort the Sister put forth for positive influence in those youngsters lives may have been wiped away.
Thanks Tyler for making a positive difference and hopefully restoring hope and faith to those young lives!
