I didn’t catch all of the news conference, but I did see President Obama’s response about the Cambridge police who behaved “stupidly,” and I loved it. I also saw Prof. Gates’ remarks from his appearance in Times Square before the airing of Black in America 2 on CNN.

I applaud Prof. Gates for continuing to publicize disparities in treatment for whites and blacks, and I look forward to his future work on racial profiling. I’m sure it will be as compelling as his other documentaries, and he now has a personal account to share.

As for Sgt. Joseph Crowley who proclaimed there “will be no apology,” I’m sure this matter isn’t over by a long shot.

Obama is right. There is a lot of racism, and cops do single out blacks. Also, however, Professor Gates makes his living by seeing racism in everything. That is what African or African American studies is all about. I can see a person like that getting all riled up when a police officer asks him a legitimate question. According to the police report, he at first refused to show his ID. Then he kept coming after the policeman screaming that he was a racist even after the policeman was trying to leave. I don’t know if the policeman is lying or not, but I can see it happening. Just look how fired up the average black person gets about this incident. It just struck me as disjointed since more than hour was spent on the young man whose father was incarcerated, the high schooler whose parents had once been drug addicts, etc., etc. It would have been a side of African American culture that you don’t see often on the evening news or on cable TV. It is important to note that there are black Americans who come from a lineage of college-educated professionals. A friend of mine said that the way the segment was set up — coming on the heels of a prior segment of black kids who had seen abject poverty in South Africa and were living below the poverty line themselves — they were portrayed as black members of the Marie Antoinette “let them eat cake” set. It didn’t help that the affluent young man’s story was barely a footnote. I also thought the segment on Susan Rice’s brother and the young engineer, Mia, was interesting and showed black men and women in business attire and far away from any basketball court.

Exactly, we always see the negative aspects of the black community on TV. There are many Black Americans who come from strongly educated middle class homes. Unfortunately the media rarely show this. I’ll never forget years ago inviting some co-workers over to my home. Two of my white co-workers actually said, “wow! this is nice! Are there any more Blacks that live like this?” They also tripped off the fact that me along with my siblinbs didn’t have names like, LaAnaconda, Sha’Quan DaQuan. Yes, it would have. The stories I saw last night were touching, but I’ve seen them all before. I’ve heard the statistics that Soledad recited before. If this was the first introduction that some viewers had to black culture, they would likely have the impression that this is the way most of us live. We’re like any other group. Yes, some of us are poor, but that isn’t the entire story of the black experience. There are many of us going to work, going to school, living our lives like any other American. We just happen to have a darker hue.

Racial profiling is a big problem, my girlfriend and i was on our way to dinner, my girfriend made a illegal left turn, which she deserves a ticket for, but did we deserve to be both pulled out the car and patted down with no probable cause, she had her license registration and the insurance. Wow, I haven’t been on here in a while and now, I think I know why. This whole racially slurred thread is depressing. Life is too short for this mess. Who cares? I can’t change anyone, but myself so I refuse to argue with anyone. However, I am African-American and I do not believe that the cops were racially profiling the professor. I believe they were doing their jobs. If someone is forcing themselves into a home, it is their job to come out and interrogate the person. Instead of him yapping off, he should have just showed them his ID, and that would have been that on that. Now, if he showed them his ID and they used obsessive force with him or they were disrespectful to him in anyway, then he would probably have a claim of racial profiling, but this was not the case. I’m all about equality, but I think he was wrong. He should have just cooperated. Everything isn’t racial and people who think this way are often insecure or racist themselves.

Chicanas are Mexican-Americans that are proud of the heritage and should be aware of how as a people we came to be. Listen, if you came home and saw a cop at your front door, you would do what Gates did…ask “May I help you?”. When told of the reason for their visit, you would get your available ID proving your who you are….just like Dr. Gates did. Damn, even the mayor of Cambridge admitted wrong doing by the police officer involved…..and this same cop is reportedly a well trained expert in PROFILING!! The neighbor was white who called 911 and her name is all over the Net and she works for Harvard Magazine – Lucia Whalen.

In addition, the police report — which has magically been removed from every site where it was posted earlier this week — mentioned that the neighbor observed “two black men with backpacks,” if my memory serves me correctly. Now, let’s take a look at the “two black men” in question. One is nearly 60 years old and has difficulty walking, so he needs a cane. He was dressed in the usual burglar gear of a preppy shirt and slacks. His driver, from my understanding, was dressed in uniform and was carrying his luggage from his flight to China.

Yeah, I can see how one could be threatened by such a sight.

That’s not a black thing….that is an American thing when compared to the rest of the world….even third world countries. We collectively don’t appreciate education the way people do in other parts of the world. I remember not too long ago, some students from South Africa visited some schools here in NJ. I think our misguided sense of entitlement has made us lazy in a sense. Here we have a black intellect who (from what I know of him) has never taken a militant stance or addressed racial issues as a whole with any vigor. Wouldn’t that make his cries of racism even louder? He has never cried wolf before so why would he now be playing the race card?

Cops see blacks as criminals first….but hey, they are only subject to the same stereotypical rhetoric that is pumped into our sub-conscious all day, everyday. Regardless of our accomplishments or place in society, we are often viewed as criminals until we prove otherwise. The burden of proof seems to have been trumped by the burden of being black.

Take the bogus “War on Drugs”. Drug use knows no racial boundaries. As a matter of fact, drug use statistically is parallel with the racial population breakdown (about 70% white, 10% black, etc.) so why is 85% of the war on drug money used for law enforcement in black communities? This has helped to lead to the over-policing of our neighborhoods and the criminalization of the black man. That basic mindset of black = criminal / thug / drug dealer, etc. leads to everyday black people being demonized and having their HUMAN rights (civil rights doesn’t cut it) being violated.

Exactly, I’ve never looked at Prof. Gates as “militant.” In fact, on African American Lives, he seemed pretty excited, at least to me, about the prospect of him having possible European ancestry. Yes, it makes his cries of racism ring that much louder.

I already wrote my thoughts about our President and the issue of Louis Gates on the meer color of your skin police stereo type you. The next door neighbor should be the topic and the Officer Crowley who did not do research or find out who owned the house before he assumed this woman who called saying there was a break in. His experience is questionable and actions also becasue I am a prodcut of my community I still see the the differences how by the color of your skin or your presence in upper class neighborhoods or stores you should not be there. Wow how long is enough of the profiling. By the way Mr. President is that not Mr. Obama, he is what he is and if folks can’t handle it get over it. Its about dam time we finally get to the top and stay there.

He was NOT arrested in his home due to racial profiling. As I said earlier, there is NO excuse for Mr. Gates to act the way he did and he should be embarrassed by his irrational comments during and after all of this. Not ONCE did he acknowledge his part in all of this. Instead, he wants to lambaste everyone else but himself. Totally egotistical, irrational, and stupid.

This is a major disappointment.

LOL @ the irony. I LOVE universal law. If your observation is correct (it’s surely plausible to me) then he needed the wake-up call…as I think we all do. It’s obvious that Obama being elected president has a tremendous social significance but in the same breath, we cannot become so ignorantly complacent as to think that this has spelled the end of racism in America….actually, it seems to have brought a lot of it to the surface.

I was pretty surprised that Obama called that police force “stupid”. He wasn’t even there to really know what happened. I don’t even really understand how a minor arrest became a news story unless the media is trying to start shit.

I have to disagree. This became a news story because of the actors involved — one being a internationally known scholar and author with connections to one of the prestigious institutions in the nation.

This wasn’t manufactured by the media — the media merely reported a story that happens to illustrate a greater point about the state of race relations.

I will read the interview, but race was inserted into the case from the time 911 was called.

The story itself can be considered newsworthy but if this could happen to a black man of his credentials in a white neighborhood, what is the treatment of the common black man in his own community? If the media’s real goal was to illustrate a greater point they would send reporters to the black community (ANY black community) and collect stories of everyday folk being violated by law enforcement to show relevance if nothing else. There is definitely not a shortage of stories to pick from.

Getting into the 2000 election is a whole different subject. It is obviously more complicated than the birth cirtificate issue, but I do think that the issues are similar. With the internet and the mulititude of news channels, people only see things that reinforce their viewpoint. They won’t accept facts that don’t support their preconcieved notions.

Also, when you say that the birthers are disturbing, I don’t think that they are that powerful. They are a fringe element. Like the 911 truthers and moon landing disbelievers, they make a lot of noise and are frustrating to argue with, but they will never convince anyone with a brain and therefore cannot affect much.

President Obama expressed his opinion about a police officer’s interaction with Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates. “The Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home,” the president said.

Was it stupid behavior or was it an understandable result of police procedure — the culture, or rather sub-culture, of this profession. People depend on police in a time of trouble but are quicker than lightning to judge harshly when things go wrong. But the most important question in this case is: Did they go wrong?

One needs to understand that the interaction between a police officer and a suspect is just part of a larger context.

When a neighbor calls the police to report a burglary in progress and a police officer is dispatched to respond, a decision-making process begins for the officer.

Police work is about sub-cultural contexts, about war stories, about suspicion, about unpredictability, about danger and fear for one’s life. Police officers make their decisions based not just on a given situation but also based on their prior experience, the experience of those they have worked with and the stories they have heard about incidents that happened in the past.

A call to respond to a burglary in progress generates a series of images that prepare a police officer for an encounter — a dangerous encounter that can possibly end with a loss of life.

Not long ago one of my students, an officer in the New York Police Department, was killed trying to stop a robbery in progress. Police officers hear about these stories and unlike the members of the public who forget a story, no matter how sensational within a day or two, police officers carry these stories as their secret weapons. This is part of their armor. An officer responding to a burglary in progress arrives at a scene with a heightened sense of danger, anxious and ready to go into fighting mode.

Yes, the professor identified himself as a legitimate occupant of the premises. However, he was not arrested for trespassing. He was arrested for disorderly conduct.

Police officers arriving at the scene of a suspected burglary in progress do not put down their armor of suspicion just because somebody proved to them that they are the legitimate occupants of the dwelling.

Police encounters can become deadly when officers assume that, on the surface, everything appears to be in order. It is their sixth sense of suspicion that helps them assess the situation in a way that members of the public would not consider reasonable. It is this precise quality of suspicion that goes beyond a reasonable doubt that sets them apart from the larger public and can be understood only by the members of the force.

A person usually does not break into his own house — it is true that it can happen, and it apparently did in this case — but this is not a standard behavior that, once explained to the officer, should mandate an automatic approach to put down your guard.

The officers look at the scene of the event they were called to as their domain, their turf, their territory, where some order has been disturbed and they were called to restore it. A famous police scholar, Egon Bittner, once wrote that we call the police when “something ought not to be happening about which something ought to be done right NOW!”

The professor may have raised his voice, and this would appear now as justifiable under the circumstances. But, when somebody challenges the authority or the domain of a police officer who was just called to restore order, the discretionary process of the officer is not the same as that of a bystander.

The professor seemingly lost his temper. One might say that this is fine, given the circumstances. The police officer did not lose his temper, he just made a decision that might have been an outcome of an error of judgment, or which one might say could have been justified given the totality of the circumstances.

There are over 19,000 different law enforcement agencies across the United States. Each agency has its own standard operating procedures and rules and regulations, including the ones that would appear relevant to this case. However, there are no national standards that can be applied when officers respond to a call for a burglary in progress.

Only very general standards could be applied and even then the evolving situation would dictate how officers would proceed after confronting the suspicious person. When an individual under suspicion becomes agitated, insults the officer and becomes aggressive, the majority of police departments would allow the officer to make an arrest.

I was not there. Neither was the president nor all the others who are quick to pass judgment. What went on in the officer’s head is something that I can only guess but, based on over 30 years of experience in the doing, teaching and studying of the police profession, I would venture to say that race had nothing to do with the behavior displayed and that the sub-culture of police work dictated the action, more than any possible bias or prejudice.

I do believe that racial profiling exists in the minds of many — not just police officers but also regular citizens. But police departments around the country are working very hard to fight these ill-conceived notions and, in recent years their diversity recruitment and selection processes, paired with modules in sensitivity and multicultural training, have had an impact.

When this story broke, I didn’t bat an eye or think twice about it because of the history of this country. The potential for a volatile situation here exists because you have a black man living probably in a mixed or up-scale neighborhood who’s career is centered around racial equality and the black experience. Then add to that, the call of a B/E, a white police officer, and the instincts and past experience of that officer. Kaboom!!! The officer whether his is bias or not, is going to respond accordingly to the B/E and act as such. Gates, answers the door, presents his proof of identity and then get’s into with the officer because he is trying to fully ascertain the situation based on his experience or his own prejudices. Now you have disorderly conduct. Because Gates proved that he lived there but felt as though he was getting the third, fourth and fifth degrees like he is or was a real burgular.

Gates let them in when they arrived and present his id. with home address on it but apparently that wasn’t enough. B/E solved.. But now it’s turned to disorderly conduct because Gates, in a sense, was badgered into getting mad with the officer despite proving that he lived there.

But we have some many people both black and white, that want us to just let it go or get over it already. One of the most well known authorities on black history and issues is caught in a situation like this but yet people want folks to just “get over it”….

I don’t think that was a wise comment to make before the facts. Don’t get me wrong I love Obama, but I think he should have maybe said it differently until he gets all of the facts & not put the cart before the horse. Judging by Gates interviews, he seems to have the personality of a person that would be irate and defensive. We all should understand that until the police have gathered the facts they have to take the call the way it was called in for their safety & the safety of others. Don’t get me wrong, there are some racists cops because my son gets pulled over all the time because of his dreads, but I just don’t believe this story from Gates.
