African American Author E. Lynn Harris passed away at the age of 54 this morning in Arkansas.

E. Lynn Harris, the best-selling Arkansas author known for contemporary stories about African-Americans, died today during a West Coast book tour. His latest book was called “Basketball Jones.”

E. Lynn Harris, the best-selling Arkansas author known for contemporary stories about African-Americans, died today during a West Coast book tour. His personal assistant confirmed an unspecified health event this morning, but said she was awaiting word from the scene before providing specifics..

Arkansas Sports 360 provided the first formal report that Harris had died. The item did not cite a source, but Harris was close to the UA Athletic Department and had worked as coach and sponsor of the cheerleaders. Black Voices later confirmed the report, citing a spokesman for his publisher.

Word of the health event began making the rounds on Twitter earlier in the morning.

Born in Michigan, Harris grew up in Little Rock. He attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where he was the school’s first black cheerleader. He continued to be a diehard Razorback fan. He has taught adjunct courses in the English department, most recently last fall.

His latest book, “Basketball Jones,” is about the gay lover of an NBA star. Says the publicity blurb: “In Basketball Jones, E. Lynn Harris explores the consequences of loving someone who is forced to conform to the rules society demands its public heroes follow. Filled with nonstop twists and turns, it will keep readers riveted from the first page to the last.” According to his website biography, Harris, 54, divides his time between Fayetteville and Atlanta.

Wow! He died crazy young. I have a clue what it was–all those gay themes circulating in every single one of his books!

  • AJ

That’s sad and a loss. I have never read his work because I don’t go for those types of books but I know he is pretty darned smart. I think that is sad.

  • Texas

He touched so many lives in Arkansas alone. People will never know how much he has given to others. Rest in Love.

  • mzsweetface

    @ Kami All Day

LOL I already know Hannibal is a character. I think he post silly remarks just to get a reaction.

  • Allison Mae

    Ahh, so sad. RIP!!!

  • Kami All Day

    @mzsweetface:

Thats what I thought. I just hope that it was natural causes (if anything) that he died from. No suffering.

It would be heartbreaking and a REAL eye opener to those men who are homosexual. I dont judge people and what they do (or I try hard NOT to, cuz I’m not perfect), but its scary to say the least.

  • Spartylicious

Wow! He was a talented author. I have all his books and still go back and re-read them. You don’t have to be gay to like his books. He wrote for everyone, not just gay men. I’ll miss his books.

    R.I.P. Mr. Harris.

    YOO, HAPPY BDAY, LOL

  • SOMER

Mr. Harris wrote passionately about unconditional love. It was through his books that I understood that just because someone loves differently than me, they deserve the same respect. With the exception of the last book, I have all the others autographed by Mr. Harris. It was a pleasure to meet you first in Savannah and in Atl. Your compassioniate writing skills will be missed.

  • …….

Damn Anonymous, its not that serious that you have to wish death on Hannibal’s mama?? I think he’s harmless.

    @The Truth

I’ve come to realize that Hannibal is either a kid or devils advocate. Don’t let him get to you. Most of the stuff that he or shim (she+him)says is just to get you angry anyway. He’s an attention seeker.

  • Hannibal

    @THE TRUTH

    WAIT A MINUTE, ARE U A FEMALE?

  • Thatbitch

I’m certainly gonna miss him as an author. He was brave enough to write about the world of Bisexual and DL men as far back as 1989, when most folks were oblivious to this world. “Invisible Life”, his first novel, is classic black fiction and if you really want to know about how bisexual men struggle with a double identity you really should read it. He wrote many books after that, some good, some just OK. But his first books was hands down his best. He was also brilliant at recycling characters. You could read one of his new novels and have a character pop up from 2,3 or 6 books ago. All his characters were connected on some level. He also had a strong christian eliment to his novels that he never gets credit for. He connected the church to the gay world because he knew they were linked whether people wanted to accept it not. He was a talented black man who remained honest and true to his art. he will be missed.

  • Bobo shanti

Stupse. Somebody really waste 10 mins outta dem life to read ELH batty-files. Jah know. Me lick-out ‘gainst it. Nuff man have sh!t inna dem blood.

  • SpeakYOmind

Hum! I don’t buy the whole heart attack thing. I did read his autobiography, ” what happen of the broken hearted and it was a real sad story”. He said he had always had a thing for men from the time he was a toddler, well his story of courage, and ups and down and battle with low-self esteem and multiple ecounter with selfish DL brothers, to making great friends to losing them all from either HIV or tragic death, seemed a like a lot of drama for one person to live. The way they all died is like they were all cursed for being Gay. Well his death is weird, why are they always dying in weird ways, if not HIV, either lonely somewhere by themselves, the beautiful men they once were, adored by all, then don’t matter anymore. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Vanity of all vanity, this world is nothing but an illusion.

  • olsweetdickwillie

lol@speak ya mind… All that bum ba klot nonsense..

  • MrsLaadee

I can’t believe this! Next to Mary B. Morrison, E. Lynn Harris is my favorite author. I just finished reading one of his old books, Invisible Life, which is just as good as his newer books. I’m not going to speculate on what he died from. I will just remember what a fantastic author he was. And for those of you who haven’t already read it, Basketball Jones is the business.

Truly a sad day in the literary world. What a great talent, he leaves behind not only his family and his friends. He also leaves behind a score of fans that he introduced to the gay community in such a way no one else has done. May GOD comfort his family during this time. R.I.P ELH.

Just because ELH was gay, why do people assume that his death was HIV related?

  • grant

What did he die of? Did he have the hiv?

  • http://! I CAN’T SAY….

I truly and completely loved me some E. Lyn Harris!! That man turned me on and turned me out- and I am A WOMAN!!! I was in love with his books, I own every single last one of them and I will never ever forget “Raymond” my favorite E. Lynn character oh and Kyle the “churl” orignator!! I thought I was Yancey B. the character loosely protraid as Toni Braxton and who could forget the countless football dudes like Basil who we loved and hated for being gay but then not being open!! I met E. Lynn wayyyyy too briefly at a book signing for Just Too GOod To Be True… I was the most elated woman/ person in the room. I wrote a letter to him in 1994 after I read “invisible Life” I love this man!! He gave us the down low brother on the platter and he made sure we women got the full understanding but he entertained he made me appreciate and respect alternate lifestyles and when my now 24 year old brother came out of the closet 5 years ago I loaned him my E Lynn collection to introduce him to his brotherhood… He is a fan now and forever grateful especially since my sisters boss, a gay man and another huge E lynn fan co- signed the approval… Sorry for the diatribe but where else can i gr-iiiive for my brother??

  • Samantha

I didnt read his books but rest in Peace Mr Harris….

  • aqueenwaits

Maybe Basketball Jones was about him…….? Anyway, I hope he was saved. r.i.p.

OMFG! ! ! You gotta be kidding me! I read Invisible Life when I was, like, 14 or 15 and have been hooked ever since. . .! You will be missed. . .

  • RP

RIP Mr. Harris. He was a genuine talent. Invisible Life had everybody open in high school.

  • sasha

I loved the Invisible man but he made a woman think twice sometimes about their man. He sure made me question one I was wrong but he sure acted like some of the things n his books.

  • Sissy

I recommend you a nice milionaire dating site __Rich Flirts.c o m__. Whenever I chat with my friends on this site, I feel really relaxed and happy. They are easygoing and honest. I enjoy staying on the site. Hope you can find more nice rich friends there. Good luck to you.

  • Paula

This is a shock. He was so young! I read all of his books (except maybe 3). He was a very talented author and will be missed. I pray that his family and friends will be able to stay strong.

  • AARONB718

RIP MAN. DAS CRAZY! HIS BOOKS WERE WELL WRITTEN AND I DONT READ BOOKS OF THAT NATURE! I READ INVISIBLE LIFE WHEN I WAS LIKE 11. IT OPENED UP MY EYES ABOUT SEXUALITY WITHIN THE BLACK COMMUNITY. HOW BLACK PEOPLE HAVE BEEN THRU SO MUCH AND STILL FEEL THE NEED TO CONFORM IN ORDER TO BE ACCEPTED BY THEIR OWN RACE. AND THIS WAS SEEN THRU THE EYES OF A YOUNG BLACK MALE. RIP E. LYNN HARRIS. A TRUE BLACK HERO IN THE WRITING WORLD.

  • mackmaine

but its still not cool when people die i jus didnt agree with his bullshit.. buti did respect his huslte.

  • a.davis

    E. Lynn Harris was one of my favorite authors and someone who I admired very much. I am a writer myself so he was someone who I could look to as inspiration for where I want to be. I hoped that in his passing that it wouldn’t be so much an indictment of who or want he was or what type of lifestyle that he led but that people could just once put there petty bigotry aside and instead focus on the fact that we lost a truly talented member of the literary community. His death will resonate for sometime with me but I just pray that he finds the comfort in the afterlife that he was unable to find while here on this Earth. As for those people who choose to denigrate him with your wicked comments just know that hopefully he has gone on to a much better place. You however will continue to live in this hate filled world with all the ugliness and comtempt that exists within your hearts. He has already had to answer to God but you still have yet to stand before him and be held accountable for all your ugliness and evil, hate filled ways.
