Last night, President Obama extended invitations over the phone to Dr. Henry Louis Gates and James Crowley to come to the White House and squash all this beef over a beer… Priceless

Black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. says he will accept President Obama’s invitation to visit him at the White House along with the white police officer who arrested the Harvard professor.

Gates told the Boston Globe in an e-mail late Friday that he spoke to Obama and said he would meet with Cambridge Police Sgt. James Crowley. Gates said he hoped his arrest by Crowley leads to greater sensitivity on racial profiling and that it was time to “move on.”

Obama extended the invitation Friday in phone calls to the two men as he sought to calm a national debate over racial profiling. He invited both to share a beer.

In his conversation with Gates, aides said, Obama and the professor had spoken about the president’s statement to the press and his conversation with Crowley.

A joint statement by three Massachusetts police unions said they appreciated the president’s “sincere interest” and added that Crowley had a friendly and meaningful conversation with Obama.

Obama has come under intense criticism from police organizations for saying at a prime-time news conference this week that Cambridge police had “acted stupidly” by arresting Gates, a friend of the president’s. Obama said he had called Crowley to clear the air, and said the conversation confirmed his belief that the sergeant is an “outstanding police officer and a good man.”

Obama tried to lighten his tone in his public remarks about his phone conversation with Crowley.

He said the police officer “wanted to find out if there was a way of getting the press off his lawn.”

“I informed him that I can’t get the press off my lawn,” Obama joked.

Whenever it’s a racial issue in America, Black people always want to “sit down and talk, put it behind us.” It’s always Black people saying they want to heal, find out what went wrong, etc etc. Now the President’s doing it too! America’s racial problem is simply sad. No talking is end this mess.

I’m glad that both parties have agreed to go to the White House to meet with Obama. Crowley seems like a decent guy. I’m also glad that Obama elaborated on his remarks but he did NOT apologize for them.

    Good move!!!

This should help undermine the attempts of Republican and other right-wing idealogues who are trying to polarize the nation in order to win more seats for Republicans in 2010. Moreover, it demonstrates that the President views the issue as of the highest importance. His approach can be a model for us all. Drink a beverage of your choice, listen to some Charlie Parker or Miles, and chill the hell out.

There will be no changing of the issue of racism until there is real dialogue and real resources aimed at addressing the issue.

Make both of them take lie detector test and get the truth . Then make them tell the world how they will be committed to changing the way they act next time . We cant keep letting people lies and divide the country .Our Prez is the best and he just wanted to bring awareness to the world and he has and he still try to bring us together.

    @Jay the Real One
I agree with you on the President trying to play mediator. President Obama is acting like MJ in “Beat It”. Let it go! Let these men work it out on there own. What should have died down days ago yet its still cooking with fish grease thanks to the Bud Light invite.

Bringing people together and making peace–this is why the brave and the bold elected Barack Obama! I thought that some sort of conciliatory meeting between Gates and Crowley was borderline unrealistic, but if anybody can make it happen, the Obama can. And I thank him for investing his political capital in this new paradigm.

The world changes for the better when people can let go of their ego trips and talk about what they value most. Both Gates and Crowley want respect, and in such a heated situation, they’re fighting over it, and, from where I’m sitting, they’re both losing. The POTUS is offering them a venue where they can hear each other out, and potentially chill.

I’m not ready to sing Kumbaya just yet, but imagine what race relations in America would be like if all kinds of people could come together over a drink or a meal, and talk about how to get along better.

    My President!

I recommend you a nice milionaire dating site __Rich Flirts.c o m__. Whenever I chat with my friends on this site, I feel really relaxed and happy. They are easygoing and honest. I enjoy staying on the site. Hope you can find more nice rich friends there. Good luck to you.

  • Wow@thispost

I have to say that I think that both parties were at fault and probably could have handled things better..but what really bothers me about this story is the underlining…its the disrespect and disregard that some in this country have for this President. When I heard the President of their Police Union say that he is ‘disgraced’ that Obama is our Commander and Cheif and called out for all Police Officers to oppose the President I was stunned. My 70 yr old REPUBLICAN grandfather almost passed out when he seen that comment. Along with the Police Chief (be it before Obama made his second address on the issue) demanding the President of the United states apologize to not only them but all cops (as if the President was addressing all cops in the first place).

If people didn’t vote for Obama or dont agree with his polocies, then fine..but for some reason, certain people in this country dont know how to address this President and that bothers me. Im not sure if it is that Obama is young or biracial or what, but certain people seem to feel as if they can address him in any way what so ever and they should know that is not the case. He is OUR President, which means when he walks into a room..nobody sits and you address him in the manner he needs to be addressed. I honastly think the cop made a mistake by getting his feelings hurt because he got yelled at (and Gates for ranting uncontrolably) and both should be forgiven..however, the President of the Cambridge Police Union should loose his job due to his treasonist remarks concerning this President.

  • Wow@thispost

And LMAO @ all the silly black folk that come to this site telling this President what he should or should not be doing. There is a reason why he is President and you are not..him inviting the cop to the White House along with Gates was a very smart gesture on his part because it cools down a vital situation that was on its way to possibly getting very hostile.

If some of you n*ggas on this site are comfortible with starting race wars…then more power to you, but part of why this President was elected was because of his ability to reach comment ground…not simply pander to black people for all their injustices over history. Wake the hell up!

  • The Truth-Old Testament

Obama blinked.Malcolm X would not approve of this old Negro emasculated reaction to abuse from your enemy.

  • dee

typical black response. what did you expect you voted for this idiot……….

  • Fernand

    @ dee

u seem very smart and respectful, great example to the younger generation

  • KIMFAN

I voted 4 O, I think he’s great. This is going to be a subject come the next election. ugh

  • Jay the Real One

I disagree with this but this is who the President is, he believes in talking to people so I let it go. It should have never been an issue in the first place.

  • aqueenwaits

@ Carolb, you’re an idiot! If you were even a remotely peaceful individual, you’d like to have this mess squashed too! You must have volunteered to work with the Palin campaign in your neighborhood during the elections….moving on to something better.

And for a few words of wisdom for President O. Stay out of racial related issues that “might” hit home. We all understand that this was your alma mater AND we LIKE TOTALLY get the black in America thing (hey, I’m black too). But for the smart ones out here like myself……..we also understand that when race is involved, you can always expect it to jump off into the “white versus black thing” OR “playing the race card thing”. Unfortunately it’s not like a Visa or Mastercard, or somebody would be raking in some mega bucks. President O, if you continue to handle everything else BUT this kind of mess, you’ll be ok. You’re alright in my book anyway. The last thing that you need is to have a wedge driven between you and the people who will re-elect you back in office next term. I’m looking forward to it. Go on with yo bad self! Great job, O!

  • georgian woman

I agree with aqueenwaits! He should have avoided it or at least never feed into the bs anyway>

  • http://bossip efree

The President is the SHIT. That is one cool mofo. He was right , he knew what he was saying, this racial issue came to light again, it’s out there, but it took up too much coverage from healthcare. Then the President said, lets squash this. Republicans won’t like this. Obama unites again.

  • http://Bossip Soul Ese

Obama should try the same thing with N. Korea…I heard their President enjoys a drink or two.

  • ja nae nae

You see bush would never do this.

  • Anonymous

President Obama should have never commented on this issue when the reporter asked him about it. Friend or not, he should have avoided this situation at all cost. He put his foot in his mouth, now he has to apologize to save his image.

  • Tiffany

@ Marquis de Sade (The Real One)

The whole situation was racist. How does the President give a speech about reforming healthcare and someone asks his opinion on this incident. That was grossly inappropriate. And because he is a black person, people took what he said way out of context. If Clinton or Biden had of said those cops acted stupidly it wouldn’t have been an uproar. With that said, Obama now has to do damage control…he is thinking about that second term. He is the President, people (white people) don’t want to see any hints of him playing the race card. So to squash any hint of hatred, invite Jim Crow to the White house.

I do believe that Obama is the right man for the job. And like he has stated many times before, it is going to takes years to undo what the Republicans have done to this country. People think that he is spending to much money on this and that, but that is the only way this country will reform itself and be prosperous.
