We don’t play videos on BET with women naked; we can’t get away with that. But it’s degrading what we’re doing, when in actuality, we’re giving these women a chance to shine. Now, if these women would become directors and depict women in a different light, then that would give them a different light as far as the way people view them. A male director is gonna direct it the way he feels. He’s gonna make it the way a woman looks sexy.
Look at this for example. How many ugly women selling records? None! Only the pretty ones sell records. Beyonce, Mary J, Keyshia Cole, the ugly ones don’t sell. I ain’t gon say no names, but they don’t sell records. They just be singing their little hearts out, but they don’t get no sales, cause they ugly. Now, that’s my fault? I can see this on TV now: ‘Snoop Dogg called me, ugly.’ You beautiful on the inside, baby. What I wanna say to go on top of that, to the chocolate women, the dark-skinned women, I love ya’ll. I got a chocolate daughter at home. I always tell her chocolate is the best thing in the world. Don’t think that light skin is in, chocolate ain’t never went nowhere. Black is beautiful. In premise, you first must look at the social roles of woman and men. As it has always been, women have the ability to sell their body (i.e. prostitution (the oldest known profession to mankind, stripping, being in a video, etc.), BUT on the same token they have always done this because men will pay for it. Also, known as a basic business concept : supply and demand.
As far as the comments around ‘its all based on the woman’s choice’, you are very correct, and the other comments pertaining to, ‘women can stop being in videos and degrading themselves’, well that maybe a little bit more complicated. If a young woman, like today in 2008 are growing up in a sex-infused culture where video vixens have taken over many a reality t.v. show and the difference of pursuing your dreams to be famous are so closely intertwined with selling your soul and you seeing yourself in the videos, movies, music lyrics, then its hard to reinstate values otherwise. Of course, if you have been brought up with morals and principle perhaps you have conviction enough to not be tempted to ever want to sell your body or your self just as a commodity, but in truth many of these woman have no other skills or education and since the media, t.v., movie and social cultures all around are glorifying it, how does a message that perhaps it negative, degrading, and sending a stigma that your nothing more than a sexed up degraded female ever come across to females growing up today? These females are only sizing themselves up near these other woman and thinking that yes, perhaps they are a video hoe, but her body is right and obviously men can see past the girl’s actions eventually, which would only reinforce to the girl the concept that she has a commodity or could have a commodity to use to attract a man, make money and so on. This will only perpetuate itself until woman are raised to know that they are not inferior and have options and demand that they are not just sexed up kittens. You can be sexy, beautiful and appealing to all without being raunchy and selling yourself.
Men will always have the desire to be lured into a fantasy world with fantasy women. Is this a good thing? I am not speaking to answer that question, however my point is that the basic concept of supply and demand will prevail until women break free from this nonsensical social role that have been constructed around them. It is 2008 and we do have the ability to run sh*t. Statistically there are more women attending graduating college, law school and graduate schools.

Of course most of my students are AA males. Most of the few female students that I do teach are in foster/group homes due to sexual or physical abuse. I’m fairly young, but it is very challenging to try to change their way of thinking about how to mentally and emotionally survive when the influence of their home environment (or lack thereof) is so unstable and education is definitely not a priority. If you really want the youth to get the message, you have to be relentless and use as many teaching points as you can. Hard to do when the focus is all about the mandated *****essments due to NCLB. Educators of many of our black youth have to serve in so many capacities-teacher, mentor, couselor, surrogate parent..etc.

I agree with you. I have nothing against light skinned sistahs. Why? Because why should I? But it is ashame that attractive brown skinned women have to been seen almost as “exotic”….like we come in rare form or some shyt. I do not want to make this a light skinned vs brown skinned issue b/c BLACK people have already done that for themselves but truth is truth…there is a stereotype and we created it. It does start in the home. I think part of the problem is the fact that we have “babies having babies”. If the parent or parents are “of age” then a lot of times they are out trying to make money to take care of the children and are disconnected from what the kids are exposed to through the “majority” controlled media. I also believe the “majority” is trying to keep us submerged in bs so we’ll never see our true purpose or the Creator’s PLAN for us.
We also don’t seem to want to take responsibility for what’s going on in our communities or see that there’s a better way. A way that may take time and effort, but A BETTER WAY.

Umm…the fact that there are successful light skinned music artists does not mean that’s the only image that sells. And if you think about it, it’s really only just three that come to mind, and that’s Bey, Alicia, and Rihanna. Did everyone just totally forget about Mary j. blige who is damn near platinum…or erykah who opened with over 100k w/ very little promotion…or lauryn who had one of the most acclaimed, best-selling albums of the past 25 years…or even Janet…she ain’t that dark but she’s not “light-skinned” yet she’s one of the definitive artists of our time and has always done well on the charts.
People make that over-generalized statement because they want to justify why they promote light-skinned women more than others. Snoop is wrong but he was on to something. It’s not just hip-hop. The entertainment industry exploits women seeking celebrity with the carrot on a stick. Hip-Hop is really messed up for the B-girls that have to compete with essentially strippers.
As far as the looks are concerned I think that it has to do more with marketing. Instead of working to promote talent and using creativity, these executives rather use the same old sex sells venues to get their artists exposure.
