In the boulevards outside the O2 Arena, an already half-forgotten Big Brother winner skips happily past me, trailing screaming girls in his wake. Inside, young girls in Rihanna T-shirts and tutus link arms, showing pop devotion’s more appealing side. Both sights are more memorable than Rihanna’s actual show, which celebrates the 10 weeks at No 1 for “Umbrella” with an overblown yet old-fashioned spectacle.
Rihanna turned 20 last month, and has already sold nine million copies of her three albums, helped by friends such as Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake and Sean Paul. But, watching her walk on in a black spandex fetish jacket, bustier, ultra-hot pants and stiletto boots, you have to wonder who has moulded her success. “Where my ladies at?” she asks, before joining her two similarly clad female dancers in wiggling their bottoms, as a prelude to “Break It Off”. It’s like watching the death of feminism to an R&B beat.
Worse for Rihanna, when she poses *****ed against the mic stand for “Rehab” as if she’s a torch singer, then draws on her West Indian roots for Bob Marley’s “Is This Love”, the skimpy leatherwear looks ludicrous. Whatever late-night rap channels may feel, Half-Dressed Dominatrix is not an all-purpose style for young female singers. It’s also the exact look Madonna was courting mild controversy with circa 1992. When her dancers stretch and pose in slow motion as she slips off her jacket, it is a Hollywood “gentlemen’s” club’s idea of sexuality and transgression.
“Good Girl Gone Bad”, dedicated “to all my bad girls out there”, sets a similar lyrical template. “You better learn how to treat us right,” she *****erts, of a bad boy who’s left her broken and boozing in a club. But she follows it up with “Hate That I Love You”, which is nothing if not masochistic. The final irony in Rihanna’s dominatrix look is that this slight Bajan girl, barely out of her teens, seems naturally pliant and nice. It is as if her lithe, dancer’s body has been dressed by older, male hands, to suit their own fantasies. Amy Winehouse’s wild, wilful self-destruction suddenly looks almost healthy.
Rihanna’s two backing singers, meanwhile, wear more tasteful *****tail dresses, and carry the songs. Her rougher voice cuts across them almost randomly, and is only strong when buffed by effects. Look at the video screens, and you can admire Rihanna’s looks, and diamond-encrusted mic. Look at the stage, and her real performance has no charisma, no defining persona. She could be a mannequin, or a hopeful rap video extra.
When Rihanna slips off for a costume change, we are taken still further back in time, to some awful Eighties Broadway dance “piece”, incorporating bits of Tron, and Cabaret’s pink boas and hats. Guitar solos from the usual expensive, hack band signify rock’n'roll, as Soft Cell’s version of “Tainted Love” forms the undercarriage of “SOS”.
Even when “Don’t Stop the Music” stumbles on a genuinely driving, house cyber-beat, cages are wheeled on to clamber into athletically. “Shut Up and Drive” sees Formula 1 flags and pit-babe outfits. It seems amazing that the young crowd are sitting still for this misbegotten mess, until I realise that they have seen it on American television. From American Idol to Oscar night, Rihanna is offering the kind of tackiness that still p*****es as mainstream showbiz in the US; which, for many, pop is now reduced to.
She returns for the encore lounging on a zebra-striped chaise longue, and lets the crowd sing much of “Umbrella”, an R&B power ballad as old-fashioned as everything else tonight. It’s like punk, disco, and the 21st century never happened.

Reasons to dislike Beyonce.
1.) When she and Destiny’s Child first split up and they found new singers, she got on an Atlanta radio show with Porsha Fox and said this: “Oh, I’m so glad we finally have singers who can actually sing.” Now that was just down right disrespectful. I guess if they couldn’t sing, they would have never been made members of Destiny’s Child. Why is Beyonce’dissin these “sisters”?
2.) What about when Latoya, her former Destiny Child’s partner who “can’t sing” came out with her CD and she rushed to put hers out to sabotage her sales? What’s up with that?
3.) Again, the comment she made about Jennifer Hudson when people asked her what she thought about all the accolades she was getting, “If I had wanted the part of Effie, I could have just gained 20 pounds.” Look at it anyway you’d like, but she was taking a cheap shot at Jennifer Hudson’s weight. What kind of a response is that to that question?
4.) She also made this comment in response to Jennifer Hudson winning an Oscar and not her, “I could easily go and get my 10 Grammy’s that I’ve won.” in an effort to say, “How many has Jennifer won? I heard she didn’t even invite her to an after party after the Grammys. Why is she hating on this sister whose self-esteem is already questionable? Jennifer said it herself in an press conference, “You have no idea what this does for my confidence.” Instead of standing by this sister during her time in the spotlight, Beyonce chose to diss her any chance she got. Beyonce can’t stand the fact that the spotlight wasn’t on her stuck up a$$ and chose to hate on this woman who did a magnificant job in Dreamgirls. Beyonce thought it was going to be all about her, but it wasn’t and it killed her inside so she did everything she could verbally to try and bring Jennifer down. Didn’t work. I’m sure seeing her win the Oscar had her on the couch with a gallon of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream in tears. I’ll be honest, I have never seen Beyonce in a movie because I can’t watch people in movies whom I dislike. (God I’d like to see Jennifer in Dreamgirls, but I don’t think I could stomach Beyonce for almost two hours)But I’ve heard from several sources, both professional and the average joe, that she is no Gabrielle Union or Halle Berry. You’re asking why people hate on Beyonce? Ask why does Beyonce hate on her “sisters” who are out there trying to make it just like her. She(Beyonce)is beautiful and blessed and has accomplished a lot and should learn to step aside when the spotlight is shining on others because it won’t continuously shine on her. If what I have demonstrated is not hate, I don’t know what is. Beyonce had better watch out because what goes around quick comes around quicker and she’s a snake. Beauty doesn’t last forever and once that goes, she dam sure won’t be remembered for her lousy acting skills.

I love Rihanna. I liked her ever since she first came out. Her music is nice and she entertains very well.
Also, she does seem a little lighter, but that doesn’t mean she’s bleaching her skin. I am lighter than normal and I live on an island. If I go out in the sun, I’ll be more tanned. When many people move from the Caribbean to the states, they tend to get a little lighter…especially in the Winter. And even lighter if you’re hardly in the sun.

I HOPE NOT! lol I saw a distillation video on youtube of the Top 10 of the Beyonce experience, and it was funny as hell.. but it also made me fear for Beyonce’s mind. Everyone waited for her to come out for over an hour and she did a hour and 15 minute set and was out. I dont know if people out here just dont get up and dance for concerts or somthing but the crowd was pretty dead. Ri Ri did a ok job. She’s no Beyonce but she did aight. Shes not that great of a dancer either. I was just waitin for Chris Brown to come out and do Umbrella with her but it didnt happen. ha

She made 27 mill, sold out arenas all over the world, and got all good reviews except for 1 or 2.
