It’s all about personal preference. I, for example, have a borderline obsession with dark-skinned men with big lips and bowed legs. It’s just my thing. If people find Chilli more attractive, maybe it’s because they like women with wavy hair or lighter skin. I don’t think that it’s a bad thing to prefer one thing over the other, unless there’s a self-hate issue involved, and that’s another topic. How can one’s personal view of beauty be ‘wrong’?

Too often Black ppl confuse the Dark vs Light issue with an African features vs Euro features issue. The confusion on these two categories happened right here on this blog.

Many of us have been conditioned into thinking certain features make someone more attractive. I recognize beauty in all people; however, I view the person’s personality traits along with the physical traits (physical comes first because I’m human and it’s the first thing I see).

Image that comes across in pictures is not always flattering as in Tameka’s case. Homegirl may not be photogenic. This added with the reports in the press don’t help. She may need a consultant to help combat her negative image.

Even though “Bree#2″ is an inhabitant of the “dark” continent” she has very European qualities, I aspire to obtain.

Tameka might not be happy because she might have some post-partum depression.

I’m very light-skinned and my dolls were always darker than me. I was taught to love! My father is very dark and I love men of all complexions and I know many women of all complexions who are beautiful and who are ugly.

@166: I think we start tearing down this garbage by letting our children know from the beginning that they are fine. Develop their character and self-esteem by developing talents and intelligence, and loving them up no matter what.

We need to exorcise phrases like “I can’t stand his Black ass!” or “She’s pretty for a dark-skinned girl!” A jackass is a jackass, no matter what color the skin is, and we need to speak to character, not features.

Also, when we do things like teach our children to care for their skin, hair and mind with reverence, and think of themselves as royalty, you can see a change. We hear terms like “Talking Black” or “Using Ebonics”, and it is normally not a good thing. I have recently promised myself that I will ttry not use derogatory terms in reference to Black people anymore, especially in front of children. A person will be a Black man or woman, not “high yellow” or “black as hell”, both considered insulting in my opinion. I defintiely do not use GOOD HAIR or BAD HAIR anymore! I know to some that it is not much, but when we start to show more respect and reverence for our race, our new generations will.

Just make sure you teach your children how to love themselves. Buying your daughter a black doll and showing them what African queens actually look like.
