This is ridiculous. It would have been extremely easy to take the knife from this elderly women who obviously had difficulty moving and was not fast on her feet. They slammed her to the ground and as a physician i am more than certain they caused some sort of intracranial bleed and or an epidural hemorrhage which depending on the severity can have long term sequelae. This is police brutality at its best and is grounds in my opinion for a law suit against the department pending her medical findings in the emergency department.

Police go to the academy for training.. and then don’t use it. Thy should be experts in utilizing restraint techniques for people of different ages and sizes. They are supposed to be a neutral party, coming to the scene to determine what happened and *****ess the threat. Instead, the drive up and become a 3rd agressor, escalating disputes and polarizing the public. They don’t build relationships with citizens and make communities feel safe. They intimidate with excessive force, both physical and mental (see the 10 police cars pull up?). THis isn’t about black or white, this is about bullies in blue, hyped on adrenaline, driving around lookin for an ***** to whoop. Real talk.

Restraint training would include working with people who have mental illness, using rubber bullets… and taking more than 10 seconds to convince a person to drop the knife.. Especially one you can outrun. People negotiate with hostages for hours.. this old lady couldn’t get 10 minutes? Who knows if she could hear well? She is 80-something. Damn.

The elderly woman was left in the car by her daughter who was just wanting to run in and run out. Her mother was in a seatbelt and could not get out of it. There was a knife in the car and she used it to cut the seatbelt. She was confused and holding the knife when the police approached her. She had no intention to threaten or harm anyone. The excessive force that was used to subdue her was completely and totally unwarranted. What type of person takes advantage of the weakness and vulnerability of an old woman?

Wow, this is incredibly disturbing. I’m from Columbus…and this is the first I even heard of this. Of course this happened on a side of town where a lot of crime happens, and it’s very sickening that the police would act in such a cruel way!!! I mean with all the drug activities and young gang bangers on that side of town, they’re worried about a frail old lady holding a knife???? They could have really approached that differently. Columbus is also having problems with the city’s money and keeping officers employed during these hard economic times….these are a whole HANDFUL of officers that need to be let go first. Ok, I actually cried seeing that poor lady bleed out like that. The didnt have to slam her that way. They have shown more patience trying to subdue terrorist in hostage situations. They had no concern at all for the lil old black lady who could be suffering from mental illness. My grandmother is 79 and has dementia. She gets violent on occ*****ion and can be harmful to herself, we put her in an *****isted living nursing home in Delaware which is expensive but necessary. So sad to see that white officers show no restraint with our ppl. they would have talked calmly, soothed and caressed her if she were white… White cops should not police our communities, they have no sensitivity toward us nor are they sympathetic to our lives. The also fear us as violent and aggressive people so we are a threat to them by just being. This is why they shoot first and ask questions later- they are afraid of us.

She could have easily disarmed her by pulling out her billy club and smacking the knife out of her hands. She also could have negoiated with the old woman. If that didn’t work call for backup, and with all of the police presense there, the old lady may have realized it was time to drop the knife. People over 80 are old and frail, the officers involved did not take this into consideration. There will be a lawsuit as well as a settlement. If I had been on the seen and it was my mother, I would have got my ***** beatdown. That is after I kicked and punched that *****ing cop until that ***** was out cold. She would make a case for early retirement after I broke her jaw in several places. One day soon the police are going to start some ***** and the crowd is going to react in a bad way. They are going to be outnumbered and by the time backup arrives, tragedy will have taken place. I will not feel sorry for the victims (police) because they finally get what they deserve.

I thik with all the craziness going on today people have become more bold about their actions matched with an “i don’t give a f***” attitude and cops have become more paranoid and it has become a game of survival. Therefore, cops just do what they want and hide behind the badge or cry self defense. In some cases it’s justified but I think it is becoming the norm.

The thought of jail scares the h*** out of me. But if that was my Mom or Grandma, I would just have to suck it up. Right is right and wrong is wrong. This was just wrong.

That is an 80 year old woman. My Great aunt use to chase around the kitchen table with knives. Guess what she was old and suffering from a mental illness. We didn’t slam her on the concrete and possibly break her hip. What is a shame is that the outrage for the constant attacks on our community by the police is just so frequent that we are not even outraged and accept them. That is one of the reason’s I support Rev. Al Sharpton you can say what you want about him and his camera ready hair but at least he stands up. Thank you for explaining what happened previous to the filming on the incident.
I figured that the cops didn’t just simply walk up to her say a couple words and just slam her down. If she had a knife then she was a threat. That officer was probably thinking ‘I am not trying to get cut or die today messing around with some dumb *****’ so she slammed her to get the knife out of her hand.
What I will say though is that it broke my heart to see her get slammed down like a grown ***** man. The fact that she cracked her head on the concrete to the point where it was bleeding quite a bit was disturbing.

I AM A LAWFUL ABIDING CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES!

Lately I have watched a society p*****ively watch New Orleans suffer through Hurricane Katrina with no help from the government as tax paying citizens. Ex First Lady Barbara Bush “suggest that, thanks to the disaster, things were actually working out “very well” for underprivileged evacuees.” They have been called refugees and driven from their homes with high prices. Societies has banned together to give them charity and new homes which was admirable. Yet, few have stood up to defend their injustices.
I have watched video of a teen girl sprayed with mace and punched for being rowdy with a police officer. What happened to our morals that no woman should be hit by a man to the fact he can restrain her easily with his strength. Hitting a woman, let alone a young girl should not be tolerated by our society. Again society didn’t really stand up.
About a month ago a student athlete from an affluent neighborhood was shot in front of his house with no justification. A flood of complaints were brought to light with others complaining of har*****ing police officers. The community still did not stand together
Most recently I have watched a 14 year old boy of 120 pound stature chocked by an two male police officers until unconscious. I cannot imagine that without a weapon this child could have posed that large of a threat. The officers then proceeded to tell his sister after his is cuffed and on the ground that they were not for sure what happened to him while still being taped. Since when does justice lie? Does justice treat its constituents with this abuse? Or, was it made to protect us or those in blue? There is no justification for this police brutality.
Just yesterday an 80 year old elderly lady was body slammed by cops to the point that her head was cut open! An 80 YEAR OLD WOMAN!!
My values have taught me that to say nothing makes me just as guilty as those who have done the crime. As my representative you are supposed to be my voice to government. I am tired and fed up with sitting idle. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! As my representative, my mouthpiece to government, we are relaying the frustrations of your constituents and the American people that we need you to do your part to rectify and check police brutality because it is clearly out of control. And as a citizens we need to send a firm message to law enforcement that this behavior will not be tolerated in our streets the same as we ask of our neighbors! the outrage is that police have no tactic nowadays…they be on some ol school Malcolm X type sh*t “by any means nec*****ary” that should not be there motto…as a police officer they should be trained to properly *****ess a situation and handle it accordingly…i have worked in nursing homes before and the elderly can get violent when they have certain conditions such as dementia and alzhiemer’s…they would try to fight us (and old people can be suprisingly strong)it might take 2 or 3 of us to restrain them, but we didn’t go around body slamming ‘em…..

The woman was not innocent. She did not do what the police asked. An elderly person or a child with a weapon have the same potential to injure or kill another person, regardless of age or stature. Charges will not be filed against a woman who wielded a knife in the parking lot of Wal-Mart, 3651 E. Main St., shortly after 6 p.m. Aug. 1.

Police said the woman, believed in her early 80s and to have Alzheimer’s disease, was left in a car while her daughter shopped inside the store.

It appears the woman retrieved a knife from the car and began wandering the parking lot, reports said.

A family she approached felt threatened and called 911, said Whitehall Sgt. Joe Huntzinger. The first Whitehall officer to arrive observed the woman and asked her to drop the knife. The woman refused and threatened to cut the officer, Huntzinger said.

Additional officers arrived as an “officer in trouble” call was placed and a crowd gathered with the potential to become “unruly,” Huntzinger said.

I am still in tears from seeing that old lady on the ground bleeding from her head. She was more than likely swinging a knife because she has DEMENTIA…which she can not control. That “woman” used excessive force and there is no excuse for what she did. Her family members have a lot of discipline because if that was my mother or grandmother, I would have torn that Wal Mart parking lot down. First of all, how is everybody going to complain that the lady wasn’t a threat when someone called the police on her. Second, she was swinging around a knife and slamming her to the ground wasn’t the smartest move, but at the same time, that’s how they’re taught to subdue anyone with a knife. I do feel bad for the old lady because she may not have been in her right mind, but I’m sure no matter what the police would have done to get the knife from this lady, the public would have had criticism. This woman could have been disoriented from the heat if she was stuck in the car for a long period of time. Heat affects the elderly much worse than other age groups. I believe this was a health related issue gone horribly array. She may have even been suffering from dementia or some other mental health problem.

I will have to be honest with everyone since I myself is in the Police Academy…you have no idea what your reaction would be when someone is face to face with you with a deadly weapon. However I was highly upset after seeing that older balck woman injured that badly…that could have been my grandmother. But if every police officer profiles a person by the age, gender, race, ect… then there would be a lot more dead Police Officer’s. Let’s look at this as people and not an elderly black woman and white police officers.

Now, given the age of this woman, the fact that she needed a cane to walk, why didn’t the officers make anyone around her moved back while they tried to talk the woman into giving up the knife. One officer could have been in front of her holding her attention while another snuck up from behind and grabbed the hand/arm holding the knife while the officer in front of her came to aide without slamming the poor woman to the ground?

But the other thing that people are missing here. And I’m not trying to defend police officers when I say this. But people have to realize that if you don’t do anything at all wrong to prompt a police response, then you don’t have to worry about things like this happening. Now in this case, maybe this poor old lady was mentally disturbed or something and couldn’t help it. But how long are black folks going to go on and not realize that fighting back against the people with the guns, tasers, and black jacks ain’t the move.

It’s like with deer. How long will it take deer to realize that running into traffic will get you killed? You would think that other deer seeing another getting waxed by a car/truck would make them think twice about running in the street. We’ve seen video after video of the police beating the ***** out of us but yet we still think we bad enough to take them on. You can’t win and won’t win. So when you get pulled over by the police, be courteous and remain calm. You do that, then you have a pretty good chance not get the snot kicked out of you or shot….

There are so many ways they could have handled this situation. Like the other officer could have came behind the lady and grabbed her arm the knife was in. The woman was walking with a cane and slow at best. I never post comments but this was one I had to. The officer moved to quickly she tried nothing else before using this type of force. Toward the end of this recording it sounds like a woman saying this elderly lady was swinging a knife.
Based on what was visible, her swinging arm during her gait swing while walking is all you saw. You misconstrued what you thought you saw, just before the male officer over-reacted slamming this clearly physically inferior person to the ground.
The officer completely overreacted and used by far more force than necessary on an obvious disadvantaged and physically challenged individual.
The officers demeanor and non-verbal reaction is telling. He knew he went too far.
There was a time when men were men, and cops were cops. This officer, despite he departments intent from this moment to justify his poor judgement and excessive force.
If this is the best he can do against a near defenseless, easy-to-disarm elderly citizen, this is the typ officer who will not hesitate to use even more excessive force when his judgment tells him that unless he uses his weapon, he will be hurt, and likely so, by a male subject who is more man than he is.
This officer is probably one of those types who doesn’t want to dirty his uniform even near a weak alleged threat like this.
Remember, when citizens are video-taped, the recording is said to “Tell the whole story”, and when it is law enforcement, between other techniques and methods of damage control, the recording “Does not tell the whole story, and it’s what took palce before the recording began.” That’s what will be spun to create justification of a Wanna-Be-Man on an old woman.

Police BRUTALITY at it finest. This COWARD had to body slam an 80 year old woman. What a shame. Treat Black people any kind of way, and get away with it. i feel for the old woman. it’s an unfortunate situation. but she had a knife. she’s lucky she didn’t get shot. she had alzhiemer’s, but you can’t look at someone and tell that. and folks can be very dangerous with that disease.

i don’t think she would have been body slammed if she was a white woman. white folks get the benefit of the doubt, all angles are explored before violence, the last measure, is taken.

i hope she recovers. doubtful, but i hope so.

it’s very tough, but her daughter should keep a better eye on her. she probably didn’t know her mother was capable of this. (Alzheimer’s gets progressively worse, sometimes rapidly. i know because my grandmother had it.)

I know the old lady wasn’t in her right mind, and I’m so sorry that she was hurt in the process of being subdued, but she was still a danger to the public. For those of you who think just because she was old, she was weak, think again. Old people, especially those with mental illnesses can be alarmingly strong. When I was a student nurse, one of my fellow cl*****mates got knocked on her tail trying to keep a small, elderly male patient in a group home (who was not only skinnier than she, but 5 inches shorter), who had wandered into the busy street, from being killed. Before she could react, he punched her so hard, she said she saw stars (and had a swollen jaw for the rest of the week). So, I can somewhat understand this situation.
With that being said, if an old lady came towards me swinging a knife, I would straight clothes-line her – I don’t care how old she was.

Certainly she needed to be subdued, but the argument she was a danger to the public is an exaggeration, at least on this tape. Notice the people walking p***** her. And the cop herself walked all the way up to her. Officers should simply think more carefully on how to approach these kind of situations.

Moreover, you have a gathered group of people–with a known problematic relationship with the police–watching so why act so agressively? Hit the hand with a baton…. it’s just stupid.

WOW I am stuck on this. I mean on one hand I was shocked to see the old woman slammed. Yet, I worked in a nursing home and I have had a 93 y/o lady kick the ***** out of me in my stomach, I’ve been punched, ran after with scissors, so I know for a FACT that agile, mentally ill old people are strong and can be dangerous. HOWEVER, I have never retaliated and if they had a weapon of any sort one of the other nurses would sneak up behind them and grab the arm with the weapon. Sometimes you can be there FOREVER trying to get them to relinquish it, but @ least no one gets hurt. This seemed a little malicious to me. She should definitely be fired because where I used to work we would have been fired, nursing license revoked and her body slamming ***** would have been taking our ***** to jail, and our facility would have been sued. I hope the elderly lady is okay.

I think her daughter should be the one held accountable. Why did she leave her 80 something Mother in the car alone knowing that she has some sort of dementia. If you can’t take care of Mom by yourself then take help with you. What was so important in Wal-mart that couldn’t wait till Mom was home or had someone to watch her.Yes the Cops used excessive FORCE but granny did have a knife,But it would have been easy to get it out of her hand without taking her to the ground HARD.

I totally concur. I don’t know what’s the most disturbing element of this entire depressing episode — the giddy guy who filmed the incident, the officer’s injurious actions, etc. I immediately thought of my late grandmother when I saw that poor woman on the ground. As someone posted, she reportedly has Alzheimer’s, which is a horrible disease that results in severe disorientation, among other debilitating symptoms.

I don’t understand how anyone could say that a woman in her 80s deserved this kind of treatment. Some of us have truly lost any sense of humanity. It’s absolutely chilling.

Also, I saw there were references made to the shooting death (murder) of 92-year-old Kathryn Johnston in Atlanta, who was killed during an illegal drug raid by police of her home. The officer were found guilty of using false information to get a warrant to enter her house. Three of them — and their sergeant — are now in federal prison where they belong.

This makes my stomach knot up…while I’m sure there are two sides and opinions on this incident what I have not seen or heard is this womans mental state. As a granddaughter with grandparents with Alzheimers disease this behavior and confusion is not uncommon. Often their minds are totally confused and they are often disoriented when taken out of their everyday elements (not home). Consequently the confusion leads them to get upset and yes sometime fightsty (spell check )

I encourage awareness and research about this disease and police of all should be aware of the behavioral traits.

Given her age, I would say that the force was excessive. I certainly hope she is OK.

HOWEVER, clearly this woman is not in her right mind. Not saying that she’s crazy, but she doesn’t seem to understand why she shouldn’t be wielding a knife in public. Someone earlier said that her daughter left her in the car alone to “run in and out” of the store. Sorry, but if someone is in this kind of mental state, they CANNOT be left alone in unfamiliar surroundings. Hell, some of them can’t be left at HOME alone.

Being a Police Officer, yes we are trained to use deadly force when approached by weapons. Im not saying that the officer felt threatened, but at the same time, never underestimate the power of an elderly individual….period. They can cause harm as well as a mentally challenged person. Yes, i think it could have been handled better, but at the same time, until you are in that situation, you really cant say what you will do.

(At least the guy filming said that the woman did have a knife. He admitted that she was in the wrong as well)

That’s ridiculous. The old lady may have been suffering from dementia or something. I remember when my grandfather started to develop the illness, he would be stubborn, would “fight”/be resistant, act angry, and wouldn’t listen to others very well. It could be very frustrating. And, although he was 103, he would exhibit a lot of strength. However, he didn’t have the strength to knock someone else over. He had the strength to pull away if you were trying to take something from him. With his age/lack of balance, he could have been easily “knocked over”. The police overreacted, and I would have been EXTREMELY upset if I had seen it or if it had been my grandfather. They should be punished in some way and taught how to deal w/elderly people suffering from conditions such as dementia, alzheimer’s, etc. No health care professional would be allowed to deal with people who have these conditions in such a manner, and they shouldn’t be allowed to either. It’s shameful, and if I were them I’d be hanging my head/hiding my face.

I think the old lady probably was suffering from dementia, which impacts the way people think and respond. When people have this condition, their character changes and they don’t process situations the way they did when they didn’t have the condition. I don’t know if it’s cl*****ified as a mental illness, but it affects the mind. I don’t believe the old lady was intentionally being belligerent, and even if she were, they still used excessive force.

She clearly looks very disoriented in the video, and that would explain her behavior. There have been many stories about men and women with this disorder who have exhibited erratic behavior and medical professionals have to intervene. It’s a horrible disease that causes people to change from their former selves to the point they often do not recognize their own relatives, or even their own identities, some days. There is currently no cure.

Even if her condition wasn’t Alzheimer’s, this is an 84-year-old lady who cannot move without the *****istance of a cane. She did not deserve to be wounded to the point that she needed stitches. That is brutal and an exorbitant use of force. I’m sure the crowd and the police cars exacerbated the confusion Ms. Dotson must have felt. It was badly handled all the way around. Rather than calling 911, it appears that someone with a medical background who was familiar with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other conditions that could affect a woman in her 80s, would have been of greater *****istance.

all you people here defending the actions of these police officers need help…clearly you have not had any experience with victims of Alzheimers/Dementia or whatever other kind of mental disease. I worked in the Dementia unit at a nursing home and this kind of *****, even worse, happened all the time. But we were trained on how to handle the situation without anyone getting hurt. Clearly these officers must not be getting the right training to deal with these kinds of situations. Cops are supposed to know how to deal with people of different sizes and strengths and this is no way to handle an 80 something year old woman with a damn cane..knife or no knife. Try pulling this kind of BS in a nursing home and you will for damn certain lose your job, face a felony against a vulnerable adult and expect a lawsuit from the family of the victim. But of course, because this is the damn law enforcement in this case, they get the p***** to act this way. And the reason i cry RACISM in this case is because you WILL NOT see these kinds of brutal acts against an elderly Caucasian woman.Period. All hell would break loose… you’d just have to turn on the TV and see it in every damn headlines.

Imagine if the police force was 50-70% black instead of 80% non black. how would other races react? how would the regulation over police actions change? this seriously made me cry. my grandmother is 83 with dementia. she can become violent, but its because she is confused and doesn’t know who anyone is let alone who she is most of the time. it sometimes takes quite a few people to restrain her, but a bodyslam is never necessary.

My husband and I could hardly watch this just to see haying in her blood helpless and her daughter not able to do much to stop them was just disgusting. I could not imagine what I would have done it that were my mother. That was the most unecessary use of force imaginable. When they came up with the term it was for this very reason. We as american peoople can not just let this go in a few weeks, something has to be done to stop this brutal force on our elderly people. It may be your mother next time or mine. Well, I hope your abuela/abuelita never suffers from dementia or alzheimers disease. The disease is completely debilitating and breaks down both the mind and body.

And as much as you like to think your loved one would not be in a situation for the cops to abuse, you never know. People who suffer from these diseases require 24 hour care and they can be moody and crafty.

If you left your sick grandmother in the car for a few minutes while you hop in a store and come out to find her body slammed and bleeding from the head then your tune would be so different.

Have some comp*****ion. It amazes me how some people have no sympathy until they need it for themselves.

I have but one question…what about pepper spray? If the officers felt threatened why not use that type of substance? I have seen them use it on big 300lb men…why not an 80 year old woman if they didn’t think they could subdue her any other way. This is sad…and absolutely unecessary!
