I told them if they could handle this they could handle anything. And I bet my surf-board(which is the only prized possession I have) that I will see these kids again out there in the ocean facing their fears.

And what has Oprah done? That school in South Africa? Black people putting money into South Africa is no better than putting money into Japan.

Attended functions to save the rink, peopleskated out in the street in a sign of protest (I had to be at work that day), and just came out in support when I could. I’m sorry that isn’t enough for you. It’s sad that you think that’s a laughing matter. I also placed thug in quotations because I know how a lot of black men feel the need to act or look hard all the time. So it was nice to see the lossen up their shoulders and their “thug” demeanor.

At the end of the days, Jay Z’s money and celebrity status would do a lot more than any amount of screeching noise I could make at City Hall for that skating rink.

So true. My friends and I have a saying called we’re “rich and happy” and it has nothing to do with money.

When I think about all the money some of these people has, it doesn’t make me jealous. It does make me sad though that a handful of people are controlling the entire world’s wealth. It saddens me that so much people can suffer, something I have never known about and hope I never do. It sounds like some “yea right” stuff, but I don’t think one person needs soooo much money. I applauded Oprah’s contribution to education by opening up a school but I was taken aback when I further read that it was in Africa–NOT for being in Africa but building a school so far away.

There’s NO WAY she can oversee the success of her creation (of something as important of a school) so far away from where she lives. I’ll admit I expected it to be on American soil, more so in Chicago or where she was born and raised, at least.

American children would’ve definitely profited in education from that. My thoughts based on my dealings with Africans settled here in the United States–specifically on how we’re viewed by them would further support my opinion of building schools here. At home!

I’ll always have respect for a woman so powerful as Oprah. She has contributed more money via contributions than I’ll ever see in a lifetime and although she’ll somehow profit from it someway, she STILL contributes!!!

When she said that all inner city black kids were interested in was the latest tennis shoe or ipod as an excuse for why she did not build a school here in the states, I was personally offended. Initially, I questioned the school so far away from several reasons—

1. She cannot oversee the success and day to day operations while here conducting her day to day operations.

2. Most African (and I do say that based on the number of Africans that report DIRECTLY to me) do not view us African Americans in a positive light. My twin brother visited two different places in Africa and he left feeling the way I’ve felt about them right here on American soil.

I must beg to differ…my professor is from Africa and she came to the US to get her masters and now teaches criminal justice and lives in Nashville. She LOVES black Americans because we are more peaceful than her fellow Africans. Maybe it has to do with which part of Africa they are from..but she feels like we are better off because our country provides more opportunities for success.

Think of me using surfing as a metaphor. Life is about fear people. As black people we have been scared shit-less of everything. Scared out of buildings, scared out of banks, scared out of life. Education can only go so far, but you if are afraid to go all the way, you won’t make it with that education.

The significant of getting those 3 kids out there has nothing to do with surfing, but has everything to do with life. Thats what white people have that we don’t. Fear of no consequences for their actions.

I’m not beating up on Oprah. However–I have noticed the changed in not only her genre of topics but her members in audience.

Oprah began her show in the early eighties and when she started, her shows were no different than the Maury Povich shows of today. I would further venture by saying she began the types of shows that we belittle and laugh at today. Yet–where some would view her as a sellout by turning her backs on her initial audience, others would view her as someone who had a further vision to broaden her horizons.

I chose the latter. Oprah saw a way to get her foot in the door. Once she did, she didn’t settle for complacency. Her audience of today is the stay-at-home-soccer mom. What SOME of “us” stay at moms do is…well, we won’t go there.

I won’t further turn this blog from what the initial post was about but, I wanted to state my admiration for Oprah’s overall contributions to society.

But we’ve been born into fear Negrodamus. It’s not as easy to take the risks they take because they, for the most part, always have something/someone to fall back on. We have too many issues in our communities and the last thing we do is support one another.

Also, most black parents don’t encourage their children to take risks, like seeing the world. Most parents want us to stay close to the nest and that’s why so many haven’t gotten past our block, neighborhood, or city. Hell there’s people out here living in NYC (say Brooklyn or Queens) that have NEVER been to Manhattan. WTF is that about? Black people need to see the world. That’s what I’d like for my people.

I refuse to down play the successes of these two people. They are major successes dislike them or not. What ever charities.. what ever fundraisers they contribute to.. will never be good enough because of the amount of money they have and the effect it has on “their” people. Jay-Z will help Katrina victims.. but Brooklyn doesn’t have a skating rink. Oprah does various things.. but nothing for Chicago.. so there is always going to be beef.

A contribution is a contribution.. teaching people to surf is no different than me coaching basketball at our boys and girls club.. or giving blood.. or doing free concerts.. or giving money after a natural disaster because technically they dont have to do anything with the money they earned just like everyday people dont.. but because they live a higher quality of life to some.. we think they have to contribute more. Everyone should be doing more not just the wealthy.. that is why our country is in the state it is now.

O by far is not my most favorite person in show biz, I think she has lost some of herself along the gold road, but at the same time, I can not take away from her the fact that she has/is leaving this world a better place than it was before she got here.. I may see her as an “”"Oreo”"” at times, but she does have a good heart, and goes far and beyond what most people with her kind of money is doing. Like her or not,, she gives and she gives big, No matter if she is still getting most of it back,, she is still doing something, with her money and time.

So many of our youth don’t have the opportunity to see outside of our neighborhoods so (like me viewing African’s) they’ll have a distorted view of what a true measure of success can be.

My nephew is the same age as my son. He lives in Connecticut and plays varsity Lacrosse. I can’t tell you the number of BLACK students who ridicule him and call him a sellout while the white ones have practically welcomed him on the team. (REAL TALK!!!). Lacrosse has allowed him the opportunity to visit Italy twice—something that basketball would’ve probably allowed him but he would’ve been looked upon as the everyday “shoot ‘em hoops” kind of young man.

The first thing my son said when he found out his cousin was going to Italy for the second time was “Dang, ma–I should leave football alone and play Lacrosse!”

On the other hand, I had an older brother that played ice hockey. he was good enough for the entire town of New Canaan, CT to sponsor him on a trip with the team to Paris.

When he got back, he got into so many fights in the hood for trying to defend his love of hockey that he quit the team. God only knows what doors could’ve been opened for him through his love of the sport!!!!!

I was done with Oprah when she did not come out and acknowledge the death of Michael Jackson. That pretty much did it for me. Obama too, it took him forever to make a statement, yet they expect the support of the black community. Michael was the number one celebrity who gave to charities and surpassed Oprah in that area and I’m glad that was publicized. If we cannot support each other, then we are in trouble. As far as Jay Z goes, just the fact that he has the gall to refer to himself as JAY-HOVA, as though he is God himself, should be enough for most of you.

Hey, you’re not going to hear me complain that Oprah doesn’t have rappers on her show. Half of them cannot even speak standard English — An interview with them on national TV would be an embarrassment for us all.

Now Oprah did have a show that touched on hip hop around the time of Don Imus’ offensive remarks, and, from what I heard, it pretty much confirmed that there’s still a great deal of misogyny, violence, and other negative elements in the music. If Oprah doesn’t want to have representatives from that genre on her show, that’s her decision. Let them go on BET if they want their voices heard.

I grew up in the church, but, I’ll be honest, when people start throwing scriptures around with no context and tying them to illogical nonsense, I find it a bit scary.

On a side note, I think the evening broadcast of Oprah’s “Legends Ball” 3-4 years ago was the last time I saw Coretta Scott King in a public appearance before her death. As a black woman, it was incredibly moving seeing all those luminaries, from Dorothy Height to Cicely Tyson, together at one event where they were honored and recognized for their wondrous achievements. When people say Oprah is a “sellout” or she has forgotten where she came from, I recall that she was able to do what I’ve never seen done before — uniting sisters across generations in a gala event that millions of black women could view and cull inspiration from.

She also put together another incredibly moving primetime special after Katrina in which she visited N.O. and interviewed people on the ground.

I didnt finish graduate school, I just got my bachelors, I attended UH same as 6. There was no thought of marraige until I finished school because 6 didnt ever want me to have regrets. My degree is in child development and at some point i may return to get a Masters, but right now we’re both focused on this wedding; at 270 people and counting its a big undertaking.
