This time the culprit is the late Gerald Levert’s brother Sean:

The brother of late crooner Gerald Levert sentenced to prison for not paying child support. Sean Levert will spend the next 22-months behind bars. Levert owes $85,427.68 in back child support for his three children – ages 11, 15 and 17. Levert was sentenced Monday by Judge Nancy Margaret Russo. He did not speak at his sentencing.

That’s a lot of paper to owe, especially since those checks from being in the group LeVert stopped coming in in the late 80′s.

    DAMN…

22 Months? I’m speechless, but this is how more and more men should be treated….PAY UP!!

  • bree

22 months? $85,427.68 for three children?..LMAO!..with that kinda money he probably owed a payment and was NEVER able to catch up again..so when he gets out of jail will he still owe the money? or will he owe more?

  • adagsda

BTW. Is it wrong for a rich and successful woman to have a sugar baby?? It is an absolutely extramarital relationship, but more and more services come out on Internet focusing on this kind of relationship, such as SugarmommaMatch.com

    …Lauren, youre such a CUTIE!

That’s what Im saying. He will still owe too much for 3 kids.

Im sorry, but when did kids become expensive? He should pay something but that is a lot and he hasn’t really been working to pay this amount.

    What about Mario Winans???

DAMN I know that sean has to pay child support, but give him a chance DAMNIT!

  • SweetDiva

Does anybody else have a vision of Mr. Kool-Aid looking at this picture?

  • Southern Belle 225

Good Morning yall! Hey Lauren girl!

Well, he should have paid up! These musicians need to swallow that pride and get real jobs once those checks stop coming in. Especially if you have kids to take care of.

  • NotoriousOne

    Wassup Lauren?

    Hey Ms. Sugar Walls.

    Good morning Kompton’s Kutie.

That is DEFINITELY a lot of cheese but I can see it. My 2 year old’s care cost is close to $40K a year. We’re not talking about food, clothing or anything else…JUST the care cost. Brahs should just man up if they gonna be out there having kids.

  • NotoriousOne

    @ Sweet Diva…

SOUTHERN BELLLLLE, what’s good? Hope you’re having a good one…so far.

@ Southern Belle, whats good mamma?

  • Kompton’s Kutie

    @NotoriousOne

    GoodMorning!

  • Lady Architect

Dag my question is does he have that kinda money? If so then he should go to jail for abandoning his duties. If he doesn’t have the money I don’t see how going to jail suddenly make 85grand appear in his hand so I’m a bit confused.

  • Lauren

@ Lasy Arch, Morning! They probably been haslting him for a while now, I’m sure he knew his kids are too old, so he probably NEVER paid child support.

  • Lauren

  • NotoriousOne

    @ Lady Architect…

“I don’t see how going to jail suddenly make 85grand appear in his hand so I’m a bit confused.”

These cats might not have $85K on hand (like MJB has $12 million in cash) but they do have royalty checks coming in and assets that can be liquidated. The jail thing is just to get them to do just that, liquidate some assets and show good faith in paying child support. Doesn’t necessarily have to be the whole $85K at once.

  • Lauren

@ Notorious One, thats what I’m saying it seems to me like he never gave them a penny if they’re sending him to jail for that long….smdh!

  • NotoriousOne

    @ Lauren…

Yeah I’m thinking that he’s probably missed a few of the hearings and ignored the judgment on previous decisions. The sentencing is at the discretion of the judge and if Sean has blatantly ignored the judge’s request he WILL get stuck. Those judges don’t play!

  • dubya

I HATE the child support laws in our country. Child support goes both ways. Whatever the court decides in terms of payments should be split 50/50.

  • Detroit Hummingbirdee

    Dubya,

I feel you & I am a woman. Why have the baby when the man didn’t want it & you know you couldn’t afford it and now you expect him to pay?. I made the decision to have my baby because I knew that with or without the daddy I could support her. Child support laws are unfair in this country. For example, if the woman is on Medicaid, why does the MAN have to pay the whole cost for the birth (at least $6,000) when TWO people laid down to make the baby? I think 22 months is a long time to spend it jail becuase they kids are going to now miss out on 2 years without their father which is more important.

    Notorious One

I don’t know what kind of “care” you are talking about that costs $40k but daycare for my 4 year old is $100 a week or $5200 a year at most.

  • NotoriousOne

    @ Skoopes-Da Original…

“And to the person that is paying 40K a year for a child… YOU NEED TO STOP LYING OR HAVE YOUR ASS WHOOPED! I don’t spend 40K on mydamnself and I work everyday!!!”

I don’t know in what backwards town YOU live in playa or what type of minimum wage job you got but I live in the NYC and it is NOT cheap. Check Craigslist for nannies and you’ll see that the going rate is $600-$700 a week (so let’s say, on the low end, $31,200 a year) add to that $650 a month for day care (2-3 days a week for 4 hours…considered half days) and you get $7,800. Add ‘em up! Maybe YOU wanna be cheap w/ the care of your child but I don’t play that. Factor in the fact that between his mother and I we make close to half a million a year and $40K is a drop in the bucket for something as vital as our son’s everyday care.

  • NotoriousOne

    @ Detroit…

“I don’t know what kind of “care” you are talking about that costs $40k but daycare for my 4 year old is $100 a week or $5200 a year at most.”

Again, we pay for a nanny to come to our house and for him to go to day care to interact w/ other kids. The NYC is NOT cheap and I’m talking about a professional nanny, not cousin Ray-Ray or my neighbor down the hall (not saying that this is you but yeah some peeps here in the NYC go that route). And like I said, I make enough money where I’m not gonna go budget on my son’s care just to save a dollar.

DAG…WHY DOES HE LOOK LIKE CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER?

  • 6 Figgas aka Knotx

Y’all know 6 Figgas been preachin’ “cees and vees” (condoms and vasectomies) to the playas that can’t squad up and support dem yutes, but hats off to the man-ups (Notorious) that handle their business…

  • Lady Architect

    NotoriousOne,Lauren good morning!

Thanks for making it a bit clearer with the whole liquidating assets stuff. Never knew about that.

  • NotoriousOne

    @ 6 Figgas…

And I’ll be the first to admit that those lil’ ones are DEFINITELY expensive. Which is why even w/ a six figure salary I ain’t tryna have any more. One & DONE!

But I’m also not gonna short change my lil’ man and cut corners when it comes to his care.

  • 6 Figgas aka Knotx

    @ Notorious

    Roger that.

  • dubya

Hey guys, I’m a female, I just agree with our child support system always screwing over the male.

  • dubya

cousin RAY RAY! That was funny!!!

  • NotoriousOne

    @ dubya…

“I just agree with our child support system always screwing over the male.”

And to a certain extent I agree w/ you. But if dude made a good faith effort to provide SOMETHING for the child maybe the system wouldn’t be so quick to come down on us so heavy. At least if dudes provided something for their child they can come in court and argue that the extra is just for her to floss around and THAT ish ain’t fair. But if you ain’t providing NOTHING then the court is gonna set an example.

  • Complexe

    @ Notorious One

I hear ya on that one child thing too! I’m done cause I’d rather invest in the child I have, rather then spread myself too thin financially!

Also, another big problem that some people have- men in particular who don’t live with the kids after a split – is understanding that if you don’t live with your child, then the law is going to require you to pay that portion of your income to support the child like you ARE living with them from a financial perspective. That’s why is important that parents and especially Black Americans, get married or at very least, make a workable social, financial and legally binding plan if you are going to have kids.

And if you find the other parent receiving support is buying “shoes” for the BMW 6 series or cleaning out Barney’s Co-op and your kid needs braces, lessons or is in a sucky public school, you need to address that ASAP! But most caring parents aren’t irresponsible like that.

Besides, you should have screened Ray-Ray or Peaches for that type of “ish” or tendencies LONG before you had a baby with them! SMH…

  • NotoriousOne

    @ Complexe…

Thank you for breaking it down.

  • dubya

    Notorious One:

    Point well taken, thanks!

  • http://! JRiddles

@Notorious, geesh! Your 2-year old is an expensive little one. That’s why I don’t have any for right now.

@Sweet Diva, since you said it, yes…with the sunglasses. LOL

But, those kids are older so I can see why it’s so much. But with the mother and father, responsibility, both fiscal and everything else…should be shared.

  • http://! JRiddles

    @Complexe…the screening is muy importante!

  • NotoriousOne

    @ JRiddles…

“geesh! Your 2-year old is an expensive little one. That’s why I don’t have any for right now.”

Kids in general are expensive so you do well in not having any for right now (not that there’s ever a “right” time). But a lot does have to do on your income level. If you’re making $50K a year you might look to cut some corners but if you’re making decent money you realize that it’s a worthwhile investment to spend a lil’ extra on the care of your child.

  • NotoriousOne

    @ Steel…

“All I’m saying is look at the actual cost and not what someone claims is the cost.”

I feel you on that…but again, due to the fact that a lot of cats be dippin’ out on their responsibilities, those that do man up wind up paying the price. I’m thankful that I do have an amicable understanding w/ my son’s mother and we didn’t have to resort to the court situation. Even though the way things stand she’d probably hafta pay ME cause I’m w/ him most of the times.

  • Detroit Hummingbirdee

So glad I don’t live in New York. That ish is too expensive. Also glad that I don’t need a nanny for my daughter- would’nt want someone else raising my child. I already wish she didn’t have to go to daycare so I could spend more time with her.

  • DM

Should have used a condom, chump.

  • http://onedroprule.org/about1720.html Nita

I don’t get it. What happened to garnishing wages? I don’t understand how child support could build up like that if the attorneys know where you are?

and how’s going to jail going to help anything? does he have to go to jail *and* pay? i hope not.

  • NotoriousOne

    @ Nita…

    “What happened to garnishing wages?”

It’s not that easy to just garnish someone’s wage. It’s more so if you have a state or Federal job because the laws are made to hold individuals accountable. But when you get into the realm of private earnings it’s somewhat more difficult.

The route she can take is to have his assets frozen but again, that’s an EXTREME situation.

  • mirena

damn he looks just like his brother

  • Ty

I can understand that men need to step up to the plate, but how is sending you to prison going to solve the problem. Just another way to put “Black” men in prison. Once you are a part of the system, its hard to get out. In addition, if he in prison, the woman still do not get the money.

  • Skoopes-Da Original

And for the record, I understand all the fees and whatnot, but as the NCP, you can have a hearing and get your payments reduced, especially if you are not in the same financial situation you were in initially. My point is that children can be reared, properly without all the nonsense (braces-your child might not need braces; tuition, etc.)-you know the norm. Coming in here acting like the Huxtables won’t help the child at all, especially when the economy is in the shape it is in and no one is immune to the pink slip.

Off Sean’s topic for a minute–

40K is about right for childcare!!! I moved out of the city years ago but my sister still lives there and the cost of her childcare (she’s got a 4 yr. old) is just under that.

I, on the other hand chose to send mine to private school and believe me, I wish it WAS 40K! I’m lucky that I can recoup some of the cost when I file my taxes each year. Now if I had to pay child care on top of tuition, I’d need another job!

  • http://www.lovingmeans@aol.com 1TruDiva w/ The PlatinumVocals!!!

I really don’t feel sorry for Sean. I believe he got caught up in the stardom and felt that if he threw the kids some change here and there, a couple pairs of Jordan’s, buy some clothes, Xboxes, PSP’s, Nintendo Ds’s, slide in and out of their lives (including the mothers) then everything would be OK only it didn’t turn out that way for him. They probably been after him for years to pay up but instead….

On the other hand–I don’t feel sorry for the mother because I can’t conceive that–just because we’ve had a child together that I’m going to force you to take care of them. If you do, you do but–if you don’t, I have the power, money and financial resources to take care of what I decided to bring into the world.

I know each and everyone’s cases are not the same as mine and life’s experiences taught me that I shouldn’t put myself in a position to depend on others for my financial stability and well being. I’m raising my children to be financially self sufficient as well.

  • stanley’s mom

@steel shoulda wrapped it up. be glad to pay support. could be paying for HIV meds.

  • buzzard

R.I.P. My condolences to the Levert family!

  • Fiddy

R.I.P now she’ll get SSI. Sometimes you have to lay off when the man is having finanical troubles. We have to understand what our brothers go through and be strong and raise our kids. I can see if he’s a dead beat riding around stylin and living better than his kids. But when our brothers are down we have to stop kicking them and just understand and realize who you laid down with and had kids. I take care my 3 boys and their dads have money, but when they act like they are’nt working or they don’t have it, i tell them God is my provider and he makes sure me and mines have what we need, God Bless A Child Who Has His Own

  • http://www.lovingmeans@aol.com 1TruDiva w/ The PlatinumVocals!!!

    @ toni b–

You’ve made some very valid points and I understand your feelings. However–I think the blame should be with BOTH parents! Yes, the mother of his children should receive some sort of support but at the same time–that should not be a “get rich” scheme that woman often use.

    Reflections–

The young man is now deceased so where does that leave the children? I guess since child support is no longer an option, they can rely on Social Security benefits.

  • C.C.

Sounds like the law beat another brother to death. You know, I have to say this. So much of the time you see brothers devoting all of their energies into putting Black women down and holding other women up. It’s seems like having the ability to date and marry white women is the only achievment of the Civil Rights struggle that they are grateful for. That’t cool if that’s your thing, I’ve enjoyed the swirl a few times myself. But they have ignored a lot of issues that continue to plague and threaten their own lives. The police beat and kill as many black folks today as they did a hundred years ago. I believe if Black men would stand up for themselves and demand true and lasting protection and equality instead of constantly blaming and putting black women down, they would not only experience true freedom, but they would really learn that manhood is not about how many different kinds of ladies you can lay up with, but about how well you value, protect, and promote yourselves and your own.
