How can someone claim to be passionate about their work and be a great artist without knowing the history of music? No wonder the music industry is in the state that it is in. Too many people trying to make money and not art, too stupid to know that making great art can make you money.

Based on this success the group was invited to Nashville, Tennessee where they achieved the rare distinction of becoming the first black female singers to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.

The color issue came up b/c people kept posting about how black he is….as if being that black automatically makes you ugly. As black people we sometimes straddle the fence on that issue. If you engage in dogging somebody because of how dark they are….just take a minute to think about what you’re saying. When we think of attractive dark skinned people – we often think of them as an exception to the dark skinned is ugly rule.

Just think about how we use color to describe a black female to a black male. If you say “she lightskin”….that’s damn near all you have to say. That somehow automatically means she’s cute. If you say “she’s darksin” you have to follow it up with “she’s cute for a dark skin girl though”.

I think the point is that sometimes we say things and don’t even realize how they must sound to other people. If you think Akon is ugly…..fair enough. But if you think he’s ugly because he’s “blue/black”, what does the “blue/black” girl reading your post think?

Not so very long ago – don’t know why it stopped – St. Lucia in the Eastern Caribbean used to have a yearly country & western music festival.
