I used to like Whitney…Pre-Bobby Brown Whitney. I hate how we are suppose to love her again and accept her just cause she’s Whitney.She needs to prove that she is making a REAL change. I wont spend a dime on her CD knowing its going to crack.

Actually she did a 3 hour interview with Oprah the day before and she was already feeling under the weather. So, I give her a pass on this. Definitely looking fwd to seeing the interview on Monday 9/14.

I just saw the perfermance & it’s official. Whitney has ruined her God given voice. If she never smoked another pipe or cigaratte, I don’t think she could get it back. Why did she sing “My Love is Your Love”? That wasn’t even one of her big hits. She spend about 5 mins alibing the end while bringing out Bobbi Christina. Them people didn’t not stand out there all night to see your daughter. She could have gone into a melody of hits. The band looked embarrassed for her. I doubt if she tours. Whit fake 15mins on GMA. She can’t fake 2hrs, 3 nights a week.

I don’t want to seem cruel or disrespectful, but she did not sound too good this morning, at least by her “old” standards. She failed to even hit certain mid-range notes. And when she did, her voice cracked. She seemed to not be in tune with the music several times during the performance. She also appeared to lack the vocal stamina to sing for an entire song as she attempted to fill time with audience participation and her own dancing. The world has lost a truly great voice. BTW, for those who do not know, almost anyone can sound great on a CD after the studio ‘tweeks’the vocals. Singing live is the test.

@ Charles, I agree that singers can damaage their voices. I knew a former professional who did just that. In fact, some female opera singers refuse to sing certain songs (arias, I believe) for fear of such damage because they are written to be sung at such a high level. BTW, this is why I give extra kudos to Aretha Franklin when she sung “Ave Maria” as a last minute replacement on an award show (check out Youtube for the clip).

Alright, alright. I just read many of the previous posts and most of them have good points.I was VERY disappointed in Whitney’s performance- like damn, I woke up for this??!! I just knew she was gonna bring it. Especially since this is supposed to be her “comeback.” What I’ve heard off of I Look to You doesn’t sound bad. But, after today’s performance I wonder how much was this project enhanced. I’m sure alot of these singers CDs are “enhanced.” But Whitney is/was the truth and I hate to even think of her voice and enhancement in the same thought!!! I think we will never hear the Whitney from the early 80′s, nor the Bodyguard Whitney ever again for that matter. Her management team or whomever decides when she’ll perform should have pushed back Oprah and GMA. I was embarrassed for her. And I wonder what caused the tears from her mom? Was she just happy to see her baby on stage trying? Or was she sad because she knows THE TRUTH. It is what it is. Whitney is not ready to perform…not now

@ Della: that was impressive. If this was just two years ago, I don’t see how she could have lost her voice so quickly, as others have said, unless she had a significant medical issue with her voice. I did notice that she didn’t complete a high note at the end of the song. Perhaps that was an indication of a pending or impending problem.

Those two you speak of let Hwood get to them, the game is a little diff, these ladies were not just r&b they were pop. Once ytou get to a certain level if you are not strong you are not going to make it. Her voice is gone, gone. I do think that she may be able to rework her voice but the range and power is no longer there. At least she came out of what she came out of, but who knows… what is next. The others you mentioned were not on drugs or huge pop stars with mental / drug issues.

So sad. I think Whitney’s true voice is gone for good. Beyond whatever damage her drug use did, I think hoarseness in older age runs in her family. If you’ve heard her Mom or Dionne Warwick sing in the last 10+ yrs., you know what I’m talking about. Both of their voices are FAR gone and I say this as someone who thinks Whitney may have been THE greatest ever in her prime. Now, even R. Kelly sounds 10x better singing ‘I Look To You’on the spot. Christina cracked, BUT…at least she sang the WHOLE SONG. Whitney, on the other hand, couldn’t get through NONE of those songs on GMA by herself. The audience sang more than she did!

Cmon guys lets be honest Clive Davis wanted this album to be a comeback album, what he should have did is contacted Mariah and asked her how to properly construct a comeback album, say what you want The Emancipation Of Mimi probably was one of the best comebacks in music period, and if you listen to it she gave her all on that album.. I love whitney but my problem is, that whitney doesn’t write, and when constructing a comeback one of the biggest things is getting your experiences out of it, I believe Brandy’s Human didn’t sell because of that, how do you guys feel? Do you think that maybe mariah should have helped write

I still don’t get the concept of some musicians not writing their own songs. I just doesn’t make sense to me. Mariah Carey’s next title song “I Want to Know What Love Is”, was sung by the group Foreigner, but was written by Mick Jones. Mariah, does some kinda whisper singing at the beginning of the song. But towards the middle and end, she manages to bring it together. I just can’t wait to hear her perform it LIVE.

Mariah is known as being a hell of a singer and songwriter. You can count on one hand the number of songs that Mariah has recorded that she didn’t write or produce and the majority of them were remakes like “I Want to Know What Love Is” by Foreigner and “The Beautiful Ones” by Prince.
