this girl was abducted at the tender age of 11. at 11, a girl’s brain (in particular the frontal cortex, the reasoning center of the brain) is still forming. the man who abducted her had (and still has) incredible power over her and would have modified her biochemical development rendering it near impossible (albeit still possible) for her to escape. there are a slew of psych studies i could toss your way (and will if you are interested) that would refute your claim that she could have just run away. she was brian washed from a young age, there are millions of women (black, white and purple) who stay with abusive partners they met in their 20s, 30s, 40s – how can we expect different behaviour from a child?

Apparently, Garrido regularly had scores of various men come over, have drink ing parties where the men would take turns going into the back shack. There would be various noises from the shack and men would come out high-fiving each other. This happened on a regular basis according to eyewitness neighbors who thought that they should mind their own business.

She will NEVER be normal again……….smh.

damn did anyone hear about the man who locked his daughter in the basement for years? He told the mother she ran away when he really had her locked in the basement. He made her have like 8 kids by him and didnt agree to let her go until one of the children were sick and his daughter begged him to get help. This girl might have been able to run away from the looks of it but i dunno her state of mind especially seeing how she was kidnapped at age 11.

Maybe she did grow to enjoy her life, but you’re talking about an 11 year old girl. It’s easy enough to brainwash grown men and women! Plenty of grown adults (black folks included) stay in sick relationship all of the time. A part of me questions all the time, why didn’t she just escape. But, at the same time, you are talking about an 11 year old who has a very impressionable mind. We can’t say what we would do, unless we’ve been in a similar enough situation. We don’t know if these people threatened to hurt her family if she left or what. I’m sure that had to scare the living mess out of her for her to just stay. It’s just a shame how so much of her life has been messed up. And on top of that, having two children born out of the situation. All one could do is pray for her and her daughters.

i will grant you that children today are cultured to be more street-wise than generations past, but i do not think it is fair to assume that a) she was brought up in a street-wise way and that b) he (or his wife) did not threaten her such that she felt compelled to remain with them. i agree with you in that i do not think the public has all the details rendering many of these arguments useless as they are based in speculation and not fact

Sadness, im sure they threatened her with harm but as she aged it seems to me she could have thought that as long as she stays there this will go on. i just cant imagine a person thinking that this crap is right and i know its some sick folks in this world but not going to school and living in a tent.. come on now even a person who couldnt hear or speak would know that this is not right~!!

In all fairness,the neighbors did call the police many times and even when they went to the house none of them were competent enough to decide to check the backyard.Even this bastard’s parole officer came to visit him and never checked the yard.The poor girl right now is suffering from Stockholm Syndrome.Stockholm Syndrome awareness came when Patty Hearst was kidnapped.Its when a victim becomes so brainwashed by their captor, they believe them and later even believe they care for them.This poor girl will be traumatized the rest of her life.In her mind, she is still 11 years old.

WOW ..This story is unbelievable because for one I live like 2 hrs from Berekeley were they guy was caught and I have friends who go there and will be going there in the fall.. #2 Im 18 so she’s been locked up my whole entire life….

And to the dumb idiots who ask why she didn’t get help…when your brain washed by someone you are under there control and as time goes on you start to sympathize with that person…and they’re the only thing you know they maybe horrible to you most of the time but they have to be compassionate atleast sometime and that’s what you start to focus on …and you only focus on the hope that maybe one day you’ll see your family again….Have a little more compassion people she had her first child by this MONSTER when she was 13 or 14 and I’m sure it wasn’t by choice…she probably doesn’t even know what it is not to live in fear…

I just pray that they find a very good therapist for her and her children that’s really interested in HELPing and not just being attached to some high profile case. And a good therapist for the whole family including her a immediate family so they’ll know how to help her and so they know how to deal themselves we all need to pray for that family

im sorry but there is more to this story than whats being told.i dont believe this was a sydrome of any kind. i agree with the other posters she still could’ve made an attempt to escape!

This post is filled with ignorant heartless idiots who don’t even know all the facts about this story before making stupid remarks about what this girl went through. I think I’m done with this blog. Many of the people here can be so damn retarded and don’t even know what they are talking about. Just rambling nonsense.

If many of you even bothered to be familiar this story of how the man abducted her you would know that he kept the girl in an area within the back yard that was sound proof and covered with bushes. There was no way people knew there was another yard within his back yard. The man was described as weird and a recluse so neighbors kept their distance from him, which was an advantage to keep Jaycee a secret.

Jaycee also never finished school or got health care and neither did her kids. They were totally closed off from the outside world. The cop did a press conference shortly after they arrested the man and explained as thoroughly as he could how well hidden the girl and her children were. Not to mention the man lived with woman who helped hide the girl and her children. It’s obvious Jaycee and her kids had to have suffered a lot of emotional damage over the years so it’s very disrespectful and cruel that some people in here would even suggests she liked it. Like I said ignorant!

This is an unfortunate situation for any child regardless of race to go through, and yes I said child because boys are abducted just as much as girls. I could understand why some would say well ehy didn’t she try to escape but seriously you have to consider the mindframe of a young girl who is being tortured, most likely threatened, intimidated , and verbaly abused on top of being sexually abused. Some may have tried to escape and some may not risk it, she was one of those who probably thought I don’t want to make this situation worse than it is already”.

jaycee shows classic stockholm syndrome, her only defence mechanism was to start some type of bond with her abuser, it was her only way to deal…the mind does alot of thing to protect itself….she was just a little girl when he took her…he brainwashed her
