Rev Wright: “Oprah Can’t Help Poor People”

oprah

Reverend Wright was asked about Oprah and he went on to talk about how she can’t do much for the poor people of the states.

Wright says Oprah is only an entertainer and not a politician, she doesn’t care about social policy and she can’t help the poor at a structural level.  While Wright may seem to be coming for Oprah he’s actually taking up for her.

How would you perceive?  We all look at Oprah as the person to come in and clean up the dirty work, but is it really her obligation?

It’s Oprah’s money. She can help who she damn well please….

Systemic poverty cannot be addressed by 1 person. Even a billionaire like Oprah.

It’s has to be a mixture of the Individual themselves, the community, the government and society at large.

Oprah is a talkshow host not the Great Savior of the world.

exactly and black amricans are ungrateful they want material things not necessities

  • justtrynakeepitreeel

all the poor black get help now from the government but they have better phones, sneakers and clothes than i do and I work and support my family can you imagine?

Oprah can not relate to the averge Black woman’s plight. Yeah, she had issues as a child and came up out of it, but think about it, who hasn’t. I agree she is an Entertainer, nothing more, nothing less. She is into the White Surburban Housewife, her and Gayle both need to sit down, with Beyonce.

It is not Oprah’s responsibilty to save the Black community. It is the Black communities responsibilty. It is our responsibilty to make sure that we are educating and raising our children. It is our responsibilty to send our children to school ready to learn and well behaved. We need to teach our children to respect themselves and their community. I find it amazing that the individuals who sit around and complain that a celebrity is not saving them, are doing nothing to improve their situation. Are you working with your child to give them a better life? Or you teaching them to respect and learn from their teachers. Are you signing them up for extra programs to assist them. There are all kinds of programs out there to help us improve our lives. However, we have decided to do nothing and allow other people to come to this country and use the programs and system to improve their lives. I am not mad at them. If someone else understands how to educate themselves or learn a trade so that they can take care of their family, I am not mad. I am mad that we as black people sit around waiting for someone to save us. We need to save ourselves! I understand that things are difficult, however, that does not mean that we don’t have to try. What kind of example are we setting for our children. Newsflash if Oprah spent every penny she had, she can’t take care of the entire black community. However, Ophrah shares her life experiences with us. One thing that I have learned is that she has always WORKED HARD!!! She did not sit around waiting for a handout. She talks about how her grandmother had a very limited education, yet she taught her how to read at 3 years old. Can your 12 year old read? Black folks better wake up! If your child is behind in school there is a very strong chance they will end up in the system. Why don’t we start trying to help ourselves instead of looking for someone else to save us. The libary is open and it is free!!! People died for you to have the right to go to school. I find it amzazing, white folks have attended school for 100′s of years. Yet we have decided after a few decades that we don’t need to go. AMAZING!!!!

It’s not Oprah’s obligation to help us so I better not ever hear her say, “Each one reach or teach one.” Unless of course she reaches out to me.

  • Scoopy

SDC if you didn’t say it all my name ain’t Scoopy. That is the truth. Oprah cannot be blamed for the issues affecting the poor black community. That is absolutely insane.

  • Fernand

Guys leave Oprah alone! U want money? – Work for it.

  • TheNewGuy

SDC you hit it right on the head. Good job.

  • GODDESS1

    @SDC… Enlighten the deaf…and blind.

I myself don’t look up to celeb’s this people are not my children’s mentor they are following their path while on earth.

As a community of Black, Hispanic it’s our responsiblities to raise our children we had them. Now for the parents who are waiting for the system and celeb’s to put food on the table and educate and clothe their children should be mandated to get trained working, get an education and be in there children school if you don’t have a job or doing anything worth while start depending on the system ….

I am parent … fulltime proffessional … my role is as a llving in a community is to see a problem and help as much as I can.. .but I refuse to take on someones else’s responsiblity I see it to offend.. parent’s on welfare crying and moaning .. and ain’t doing a thing to improve their family situation …. I have seen success of families but it’s funnny how the successes are not recognize the non-successful individuals are hindering progress…

My son’s friend who have been in school with him since grade school… mother’s were not involved they didn’t complete their homeworks, assignments.. these boys barely pass. I managed to help my son… with school work homework, etc. Extra curriculm activities sports. He is going to junior high school now and is continuing his college credit’s onto 7th grade.

I keep pushing him to be successful.. this is his right. As long as I am in his life I dare society or anyone to stop us.

Parent’s are not taking advantage of things in their communities to uplift…sending their kids out in the street… with no supervision.. I was in the playground with my youngest.. little blacks kids up to 14 years old cussing and acting out!. Little girls trying to be grown …

I am sorry it’s turn-off to parents who is teaching their kids to be respectful … to have their kids in the same playground with these kids.

I told the little girls they are angels and shouldn’t say bad words… the one little girl said her ‘mom cuss’… I said well she is grown women, so the little girl responded by saying…. ‘she is small’.. now that was a moment… of kids say the darnest thing..

    5%NATION….

  • Yeah Ok

Of course it’s not her obligation to help others, he is absolutely correct. It is time for everyone to stand up and do their part to help their community… it’s time to stop waiting around for someone else to give you what you need when you are well able… all this waiting around for help is why the government is trying to run everything and everybody. STAND UP!!

  • WordtotheWise

Oh here we go with the anti-Oprah diatribe. This woman is not obligated to anyone. She does give back to her community, but you wouldn’t know that if you have such disdain for her.

    @blu buddafly>>>U cosign 100%!

  • IKOWIMRIGHT

Rev Wright aint right!!! He’s a nut case!!!

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/twinky647 DaOriginalMsMa

    He right…so what’s next…

  • white male

Wasn’t Oprah like the most philanthropic person in the world last year???

  • Ready Set Go

Oprah helps me by not being another white or black American on welfare. She in not trying to beat the system while forcing me to pay taxes just to support her. Drawing a link between individual rich people and this issue is pointless. As the previous poster mentioned this is a structural problem. It must be addressed from a systemic perspective.

  • white male

Doesn’t Rev Wright have like a 75,000 square foot house???

  • Keisha2doll

@ Ready Set Go I’ve worked for the city and welfare recipients only get about 2 cents of our tax dollars. Most of our tax dollars go to politicians, wars, and business incentive programs. Concluding leave those poor people alone with what, you thought you knew.

  • Onk7

Seriously, if you’re waiting on Oprah, Magic Johnson, or any other entertainer to lift your community out of poverty then you deserve to fall, Period!! How about getting educations, raising children with some dignity, turning BET OFF!! When the “In” celebrities become Frankie, Neffe, and Keisha you know something is wrong.
This is not directed toward all of us but there is a segment of our communities that really need some act right!

Philantrophy will always have a negative effect on the haters that it doesn’t relieve. It’s so easy to trample on the accolades of a media mogul if the generosity isn’t felt in the physical and/or monetary sense. Lot of little momies look up to her..she’s not a bad role model for alot of people. She came from the gutter. Did more than alot of US in the industry. Look how they try to make her look. More than G4′s, muliple mansions and 30inches on DONK.

  • Blip

    I’m lonely

  • http://bossip.com love17

i know there are some people that NEED help from the government but i think some just want a hand out

  • Big Mama

Well Why is it that she only helps certain children and not ALL CHILDREN?? she needs to stop focusing on Chris Brown and Rhianna and Help some of the BLACK poor CHildren in AMERICAN…

  • Samantha

Everything that Oprah does is by choice not obligation. Everything that she has she worked for. I’m so tired of people who expect a hand out.

  • YorkieLover

I agree with SDC all the way!!!

    I love Oprah,she is my role model…

  • PLEASE

Oprah doesn’t owe anyone sh*t. People need to stop looking for fuc**ng hand outs and do it their damn selves. ppl always think someone owes them something.

  • http://www.blackgaysocialite.blogger.com GAY

Not her obligation but once you open your mouth to critique someone a solution should follow.

  • resurrected

The thing about people they hate when you are doing good because it makes them feel like less of a person… Look people no one is going to live there life half anything just to appease you feelings and attitudes… It called life live yours and let other people lives there’s… I am not mad a Oprah because I don’t look to her for much but I do like what her life represent a hard working black woman who has made it through and beyond many even many white people… That is good enough motivation for me to get off of my azz and see what life might have in store for me..
