On the Come Up: Deborah Cox to Play Josephine Baker on Broadway

Bossip has learned that Deborah Cox will be returning back to Broadway after five years.

Deborah Cox who was on Broadway for three years will be returning to the stage to play the leading role in a Josephine Baker musical titled “Josephine” based on the late legend’s life:

JOSEPHINE, which producer Ken Waissman developed from scratch after being inspired by the legendary African-American ex-patriot, is planned for the 2010-2011 Broadway season.

The story of JOSEPHINE, which Mr. Waissman describes as a “coming-of-age tale,” is inspired by actual events, and takes place in Paris between 1939 and 1945: Josephine Baker is queen of the Paris music halls, involved in a liaison with Crown Prince Gustav VI of Sweden and secretly serving her adopted country in the French Resistance. Her heroic work during the war brings her the self-worth she so vainly sought in fame, money and the arms of royalty.

Congrats to Deborah,  it’s good to see her get a break.  She’s great on Broadway, so hopefully now she’s in her lane.

Good on Deborah. Josephine Baker is one of those great but forgotten entertainers who made it rain on them hoes long before Madonna, Mariah, RiRi, Whitney and Mary J Blige. Finally, she is getting her due respect.

i’m not sure about deborah ***** as josephine baker, but she will probably do a good job, especially singing. in my opinion, Lynn Whitfield sealed that character years ago with the movie about ms baker

  21. Debra ***** is a wonderful choice and the story is of an amazing women. It has a good chance because of it’s crossover appeal. I just hope that our community supports “Josephine” and the upcoming “Fela” musical like we continue to break records for Tyler Perry. I will put a group together for this one. Thanks for the post. I didn’t know and I am in NYC. hmmmm

Deborah *****! She is one of my favorite vocalist of all time since her debut song “Sentimental” (my most favorite song of hers). I was age 10 going on 11, in 1995. Represent! Thanks for the information.
