Yes, the disrespect does go both ways, and I have addressed the vitriol voiced by sisters as well, on more than one occasion. I think there’s anger and bitterness among both genders, and a number of people on here seem to be speaking from residual emotions from past experiences.

But, as a black woman, I have to say, that prior to visiting this site, I’ve never come across some of the names to which I’ve read sisters referred on here. Speaking from my own perspective, I think some sisters feel attacked, devalued, and disrespected, and they react with emotion — I certainly have. It’s more than a little disconcerting when you read comments from men who think of black women as little more than sexual objects, use prostitution terminology in reference to them, use the most vile language possible to describe them, etc. And, then, some actually have the audacity to say that they “love” black women. It’s laughable, really.

There’s nothing “loving” about a lot of the rhetoric on these threads — and, yes, that goes both ways.

I’ll go back to the news reports this week of the sister who was viciously beaten in a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Ga. From what I’ve read and seen, it appears that few, other than some restaurant employees, came to her aid. Then I incredulously read comments on here that question why she didn’t fight off her attacker.

It just reminded me of a hard truth — In general, we’re not seen as “damsels in distress,” nor are we treated as such. I believe there is a sentiment out there that black women are largely on their own — and, at times, it feels that we’re getting hit from all sides, and it takes its toll.
