After last year, we should’ve seen this coming:
“The Soul Train Music Awards have been scrapped for 2008. The annual ceremony celebrates the best in black music and entertainment in North America, and has been running for more than 20 years. This year’s event would have marked the 22nd installment of the Soul Train Music Awards, but the reason behind the cancellation has yet to be disclosed.
Last year’s ceremony lacked the presence of the main nominees, including John Legend, Gnarls Barkley and superstars Beyonce Knowles and Mary J. Blige, after scheduling conflicts meant they were unable to attend the event.
However, the awards show – which usually takes place a few weeks after the prestigious Grammy Awards – has also been under increased scrutiny since Soul Train, the TV dance show it was based on, was brought to an end in 2006. It is currently unclear whether future Soul Train Music Awards would be affected by the 2008 announcement.”
With so many Black artists scrambling to clear their schedule for the “prestigious” Grammy’s, they neglected to participate in this cultural institution last year. Now it appears that the Soul Train Awards may never come back. We’d like to see them overturn their decision about canceling this year. The mostly D-List celebrity line up was pretty entertaining last year. SMH.

That’s sad that those people didnt show up for Soul Train but they’ll show up for Grammy’s which is like the Oscars.
I think its so sad that these black artist can’t ever show up for the black award shows. As soon as they make it big enough, they are too big to participate in shows and events for blacks. We are the ones that give them their start then they crossover and forget about us. That’s sad.
On another note, black awards show seem to rarely have their shit togther during show time. Its always something. So I can kind of understand why they might not want to attend but they should still go and show the support for the black community. But I think what did it for Soul Train was when Ashanti won the Lady of Soul award that year. Her non singing no performing ass should never win an award so “prestigous”. But at the same time, they can’t really get larger artists to show up so I guess they have to give the award to people they know will show up. Iono yall.

What a lot of people fail to understand is that the Grammys have contracts with the artist. The contract simply state if you agree to perform at the Grammys, you can do any live performances 30 days prior on tv. That way the grammys can hype up the artist & it’s not something you seen last week on Letterman. Most of these stars would rather do the Grammys over any other music award show.
I first became aware of the contract when there was a big dispute over Michael Jackson trying to do both the Grammy’s & AMA back to back within 30days. He had to be reminded of his contract with the Grammys and that is why Dick Clark changed the AMA’s from Jan to Nov. Now as far as just presenting, I don’t know what the rules are.

Soul Train been WHACK for 15+ years now. I’m quite sure the Soul Train Awards became just as garbage. I haven’t seen that show in like 10 years.
And why should we continue to support Don Cornelius? It was DON CORNELIUS, who allowed Soul Train to become “watered down” in the hopes that he would gain a larger audience. Well, NO ONE liked that garbage shi*!!! He gets a “Ho Sit Down” from me.

You know I thought it wa a sayum shame that the Soul Train awards lacked so much support last year. It sucked and gues whose fault it was? THE ARTISTS!!! Every single last one of them that had ‘bigger’ things to do…Soul Train Awards, one of the first award shoes to support, uplift, pronounce and introduce artists who are notorious today. I think that has to be part of the reason it has been cnacled – lack of support. I hope they overturn the decsion and I hope all Black celebrities remain supportive of the awrad show we ooked forward to watching growing up….Our people receiving mucical recognition and the continually evolvement of Black music….

If that contract thing is correct it would make sense. If too many award shows aired prior to another one, then the public would be tired already and not tune for more of the same thing.
