Ho Sit Down: Gladys Knight Bashes Hip Hop Something Serious

Gladys Knight has hopped on the hip hop bashing bandwagon and said hip hop sets black people back.

When Gladys Knight was asked how hip-hop has changed the nature of black music she responded:

Well, it’s been good as far as giving young artists an opportunity to get out there. But, it’s been bad, in my opinion, as far as the quality of the music and the stories that they tell. It’s one thing to be raw about your history, but they took it to another level and it became vulgar. It has not elevated our industry musically, and it definitely has not elevated us as African-Americans because we show disrespect for our partners, men and women. I believe we have lowered our self-esteem with these performances and presentations.

We hate how people classify all artists of hip hop together.  What about the artists that are doing positive things and being creative and innovative forces in the hip hop world? Just a thought.

How dare you refer to Ms. Knight as “ho”! She is one of the classiest ladies in the industry, and she is owed respect. Ms. Knight spoke the truth and you know it.

  • Whatyousay

Let’s get something straight. Don’t EVER call Gladys Knight a ‘ho’. Ever. Losers. She can say what she wants to, she’s earned that. And most importantly she is right. Dumb crack heads work here and half the time, your stuff is misspelled and wrong and you want to call a legend a ‘ho’.

She should have taken it a step further & named names….Kanye, Lil Wayne, Lil Kim, BEYONCE! All that profanity, acting out & showing your goodies on stage is a horrible influence on the youth.

Now there are alot of positive artists out there keeping real R & B alive ( Mary J, Whitney, J Hud) to name a few..

Even the white folks in the forum point out “US” blasting each other….this is truly a shame. Egh, shut this ish down!

  • Smart Guy

Rap is different than hip-hop. I think this is where the problem comes in. People listen to rap music and qualify it hip-hop. Hip-Hop has a message, whether uplifting or not that is at the discretion of the artist. I truly believe the same people I.E. Oprah, Gladys, Bill Cosby, probably do not listen to real hip hop nor understand the message. Jay-z says so many real things, im not refering to commercial songs either.

“hip hop sets black people back”???????????????

Why is it that when a black person does something it’s and embarrassment to the race, but when a white person does it they just f*cked up on their own??? Unless they try to say the white person was influenced by blacks.

Hip Hop should be judged just like any other musical genre.

No Hip Hop does not set black people black.

The belief that “Hip Hop sets black people back” is just away to have us hate ourselves.

  • B’More

Gladys is right. hip hop has destroyed the music industry. it’s the reason why people don’t buy music anymore. hip hop now represents a society with no class that rewards ignorance, and just expects everyone to accept it under the guise of “keeping it real”.

All Hip Hop is Hip Hop. I don’t like a lot of the stuff that is out now. But I understand that it goes in cycles. I remember plenty of rap from the 80′s that was just corny.

  • CJ

Your address of Ho (incorrect spelling) is an example of the disrespect, I assume, that she is talking about. Why can’t someone have an oppinion that is opposite and not have to be something derogatory for expressing it. EVERYBODY is entitled to feel what they want. whether you, me, him, or her agree or not.

And in a lot of hip hop the music is vulgar and disrespectful. In what other genre of music do you hear the men sing/rap disrespectfully of women like black music? It is a damn shame. Not saying that this is a reflection of all black music but it is in enough.

The sad thing is that the music I first recognized in the 70′s was different from the music the kids today will be influence by.

  • why/

and the dumber generation continues to post comments that highlight the garbage views of some rap music today, way to COOP, your intellect is that of an unborn child, senseless.

And for the idiots who keep saying its about age, thats crap, anybody can recognize real music and do the stanky legg and the booty doo are not worth hair on a antz azz. Where it the subject matter in the music, where is the part about their music that shows they actually have talent and not just a fad of the times. Man I swear..

  • whatever

you called Gladys Knight a HO! Are you serious. Okay gloves are off…we comin to get you

  • @ da poet

@Coop – Sorry, I have to disagree. There are alot of artists out nowadays that claim what they do is hip hop and that is not the case. It is not re-formed hip hop or an advanced version of it. It is ignorance and you can hear it everyday allday when you see kids on trains, buses and out in the streets disrespecting their elders by cursing at them, in front of them, etc. Half of it stems from the parents not giving a proper upbringing, but then the influence also comes from what they see and hear on TV. Lil’ Wayne claims up and down that he does hip hop and in my opinion he doesn’t. Like I said and I don’t expect all to agree with me. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

  • RozieT

How dare you call Gladys Knight a ho! And she does speak the truth. You don’t have a problem calling her a ho, when some of the rapper/hip-hoppers refer to some women as hos.

  • John

    @Lindz Nicole

I see what you are saying and I total agree with you. But what our generation has to learn is you can disagree with someone with out being disagreeable or disrespectful. That all a lot of people are saying. The Ho sit down was out of line.

  • @ da poet

@Coop – That would be the sole reasoning behind my statement of “EVERYONE BEING ENTITLED TO THEIR OWN OPINION”. You don’t have to be able to see in order to notice the difference in music from then & now. Hip Hop back in the day didn’t influence you to wear your pants half off your butt that clearly originated from jail. It also didn’t influence you to get some grills in the front of your mouth either. Most Hip Hop back in the day was about positivity, enlightening and teaching at the same time about your culture, the times we were in, etc. Today is not like that is all I am saying. It’s recycled bull about the amount of money you have, the rims you got, the girls you got, etc. It’s just stupid to me and yes, in my OPINION lacks quality. We can agree to disagree as I ALSO stated in a previous message. Not gonna go back and forth…if people stand firm in what they believe in you can’t sway them. Simple as that.

  • Alrighty Then… (why do all of the “men” on Bossip argue w/ females?)

@Smart Guy – alright already, we get it. Jigga is cool, and not many of his lyrics are dumbed down and mysogynistic, but he is DEFINITELY the MINORITY. We are talking about the hip-hop movement as a WHOLE. Perhaps the problem is that there are more RAPPERS nowdays, than MC’s. They simply recycle and regurgitate whatever is “hot” at the moment, rahter than bringing the originality, and depth that once was “hip-hop”. Either way, Jay can’t carry hip hop on his shoulders alone, so to continue to reiterate his raps in your post is pointless. He represents about 1/1000 of the rappers in the game right now, and although he is definitely top 2 percentile (IMO), he’s not the ONLY one. Let’s step back, drop Jay’s nuts, and look at the bigger picture.

I mean you gotta have some sort of intelligence here. LOL Look at what we are having to compare. There is no comparison to music back in the day. I am all about giving props when they’re due & I am all for black people succeeding, but at least let it be helping your people or driving them in the right direction. • Janae

Thanks, Gladys. I TOTALLY AGREE. I love a good beat just as much as the next AA, but the messages have got to go. One “good” song out of 50 or 100 just isn’t “good enough”. The most popular and successful artists are the ones spewing the negativity, not the ones concentrating on positive, uplifting messages. So, while I love the “sound”, I think the content is “garbage”.

  • CoolTarnue

I think she’s right and wrong. Right, in the sense that, the QUALITY of hiphop music hasn’t been great and has portray a negative image about African Americans. There’s no thought process, there’s lack of creativity. Majority of the songs out nowadays are too predictable, too flat…..She’s wrong, music as a whole, is a form of expression. It’s a prism that comes with different forms of light, so who’s to say that purple-yellow, or green-blue is wrong, it’s coming from the same projector, right? Now, I hope I didn’t lose some of you guys, but Artists have to tell their stories, whether it is harsh or not…That’s their reality that they see and live by, who’s to say that they are wrong or their body of work shouldn’t be allowed…BUT THERE HAS TO BE CREATIVITY, SUBSTANCE, A UNIVERSAL MESSAGE!

Let’s not forget the fact that Gladys has had 4 marriages, 3 children from two of them and a gambling problem at one point.. She has her own problems to worry about aside from the message that hip hop is sending now a days. Instead of bashing the problem she should collaborate with some artists and change the message! @Coop Thats doesnt make sense to me! LOL Thats like saying ignorance & poverty is a product of your upbringing if you were brought up in the hood & had nothing. LOL You don’t have to settle for that, you choose to keep your standards low and do nothing. Rise above & make something of yourself, then go back and help those who are as you once were. Product of and IS are two different things. You’re a product of your parents, do you have to be your parents? No.

What you said sounds good but it was nothing more then spin. It has everything to do with getting older. It happens to every generation. I remember one lady complaining because a rapper wore jeans to the source awards.

As people get older they forget the youth and what they did as kids. They may say that is not the case even when it is.

I understood your point, bruh man, but spouting lyrics from ONE MC in the game over and over to make your point? WHERE is the substance in Hip-Hop overall? I’ll tell you – it doesn’t exist any more. It’s a fact that there will always be exceptions, but what is being given to the masses is fraudulent and empty, for the most part. If you can’t see that, me thinks you are the foolish one.

So true…Gladys (keeping it real). However, there are some rappers that are positive, but the white CEOs exploits our people by pushing for artists that deliver lyrics which denigrates & disrespect people in our community. The more vulgar and disrespectful the lyrics are, the more the white man loves it and laughs at it and calls it the bomb. Go figure.

P.S. Why all the ruckus about her opinion anyway?

  • A Drop of Wisdom

Me thinks it’s not Hip Hop that’s the culprit. Me thinks it’s Black folks (some) whom set themselves back. Remember there are different elements in every ethnic group, so you can’t lump them all together.

    @TMHESQ

I agree that the record industry does have a huge role in whats being put out there. You’re right, nobody is taking responsibility for the content and integrity of their music, BUT, nobody is forcing people to buy their music/ attend their concerts, hell even downloading brings about a sort of promotion for their songs. At the end of the day people aren’t mindless drones, if they wouldn’t support it, it would not be made. The power ultimately lies with the consumer.

There was a time when you had to sound good in order to get a record deal. Not so today. There was a time when the list of mediocre artists was short and the list of good artists was endless. Today it’s just the opposite. The list of good artists is short and the list of medicore artists is endless. That’s the problem with music today. Don’t get me wrong I like all types of music. I have Hip Hop music and Rap in my collection and I have been around for a while but I only like what sounds good and a lot of the music today does not sound good.

  • Smart Guy

    @ Alrighty then…

The substance of Hip-Hop overall is subjective, so i cant answer that. What i will tell you however that there artist who do not conform the the “standard” of what it takes to sell music and get radio play. Where ever you are from im sure there are dope artist who “got it” but just wont ever get to the mainstreem. Find them and give them a listen. I completley get you though. Just seems your argument should’nt be with the artist but the consumer and the CEO. If we bought things of an intellectual calibur and not “the jerk” maybe it would be diffrent. Also there is always a white guy at the top who tells the artist what to put out. Maybe if we set goals to own our music not just put it out things may be different.

  • TheWholeTruth

Oh, please! Gladys is RIGHT! Every single word of what she said is right!

Black people DO degrade each other in music nowadays and sell their souls to record labels. Even if artists come out on a positive level, they eventually start making ignorant songs, because that’s what sells. Black people love ignorant crap and you can tell by their choices in music selections. They will purchase Gucci Man’s music before The Roots, and it’s all because of the lyrical content. If someone is making a stront statement or just making sense, period, most Black people now don’t want to hear it. They want to bounce to some ignorant fool from the hood telling some chick to bend over.

I wish I could speak to Gladys as a fan of many years…AND an AVID lover of Hip Hop. Hip Hop got me through some tough times in my life and helped me overcome my shyness. It also inspired me to be a better person, and as a result I received my Masters Degree this past June. Gladys I would love to remind you how R&B has spiraled out of control as well but also show you the positive things Hip Hop has done. Write back if you’d like to have a mentally uplifting conversation.

  • Robert Kelly

Secondlly, Hip hop should not be the scapegoat by which WE as a people place the blame for our races misguided approach to life over the last 50 years. I say if anything the issue can go back to the “Pimp Mentality” that were sung about so eloquently about in the 60′s (Curtis Mayfield for example)and spawned the Goldies and such that the sub culture within our community identified with. Lets go to the root of the problem …the root i say…not the symptom of a much deeper issue. Long live Hip Hop!

@ Tamir, your point is somewhat consistent with the argument that has been raised that integration actually hurt black people by allowing the “best of us” to leave our communities. But, point that we have more of this or more of that is illusory at best, because the issue is what do we have, but what do we ULTIMATELY control. It’s nothing. (If you think you own property, doesn’t pay your taxes and see what happens to it). That’s why I made the point in an earlier post that in the music industry we have to control the distribution, which is the ultimate power because it gets the product to market. Gladys was right.

“We hate how people classify all artists of hip hop together. What about the artists that are doing positive things and being creative and innovative forces in the hip hop world?”

How many of them are there? Three? My point is, the ratio of positive and innovative artists versus the negative stereotypical ones is entirely microscopic. Hip Hop has eroded the quality of Black Music, reduced the level of craftsmanship in creating the art and given young black people an excuse to NOT learn what so many truly innovative and creative artists had to know before them in order to get in the game. And PLEASE, don’t call Gladys Knight a ho because she says something true that you don’t want to hear..

but what yall need to realize is that anything negative, even down to a single vulgur lyric of a song, is going to overthrow anything positive and because these are hip hop artists and becuse of the negative stereo-types surrouding them are people going to associate them with negatisim. its not going to stop until all of hip hop has changed, it may never change at all but what i am noticing is that there are more and more influential black people (w/e their occupation) are coming out and saying hip hop is sending the wrong messages so that’s also something that needs to be taken into consideration, these people are not voicing their opinions for nothing or just to be talking esp. if it might hurt their own people!

Im never coming back to this site again. Good riddens.

  • WordtotheWise

Whether you sing the praises of hip hop or not, she is entitled to her opinion. She thinks the current music stinks, and so do I. At least back in the 70s/80s, the quality of music (i.e. people studied the craft), there was a variety. Yes, some of the lyrics of old school music tended to be sexual, but there was a beauty in it. We didn’t have crap like, “I Wanna F Every Girl in the World” madness. The music industry is pushing this mess on us and the real artists, i.e. Jill Scott, India Arie, etc. don’t get any play.

  • WordtotheWise

To all those angry at Gladys for her opinion, what part of what she said is not true? Please do tell.

  • Leon

She’s absolutely right. I think her response was quite thoughtful in fact. And yes, it does lower the quality of music we are creating. What she means is that there is that hip-hop doesn’t encourage any of us to really learn the art of music, that is, how to read music, how to write it and how to perform it.

I assume you chose that unsavory title to elicit a response that I am not going to give you, so I’ve said my piece.

You should offer an apology to all women and Gladys Knight for that comment. Every single time I look at this site, it makes me sicker, more depressed and sad for the state of affairs here. Hip-Hop has had some highs, yet far too many low points. Man up and accept her opinion of the genre…she speaks as an artist, a leader and actually as a music historian. GK was there before most of you were even conceived. Please learn to be more accepting and listen to those who have charted the path, walked the miles and cleared the way for Hip-Hop. • B

DO NOT DISRESPECT HER… TAKING STUFF TOO FAR. “HOE”?? MY GOODNESS…

  • kingsley

LOL DID YOU SEE THE POST ABOVE THE 70′S BLACK FEMALES ACTING OUT…. DORINDA’S TRUNK CORNA…. FREAKIN HILARIOUS… bOY I WONDER WHERE WE GOT ALL THIS IGNORANCE AND NEGATIVITY… sHE SOUNDED LIKE A TYPICAL ALBUM OF TODAY…. LOL

  • FBossip

Glad to see so many others out there can see how garbage this post and site is. Defending hip-hop is cool, but the truth and respect for pioneers must always take precedent!

  • Arthur

Nas is still relevant. He’s planning on building a school in Africa. How can that not be uplifting

  • C Allen

@ Toni B….you are dead on with that.

  • GTFOH With the DUMB

Getting sued doesn’t put you on the map. It’ll just make you broke, busted and gone. smh.

  • krissy

    @UPDOWN

I’ve heard plenty of stories about giving back and that is not my issue. My issue with him is he didn’t see anything wrong with Hip Hop until he couldn’t make money from it any longer.

You know this about P because you have a friend he helped. Who do you know directly that gave you info about Jay and Puff??? In all due respect don’t make statements you can’t support.

Yeah you sound real convincing… I’ve seen you on this same site calling women ho’s. How can YOU talk? If I didnt know any better I’d think you were one of the ignorant, uneducated, low class rappers that set us back… No woman, icon or not, should be called a ho. smh at this site…

Gladys Knight is totally right. I was in the music industry and I got out because of the image they wanted me to portray. I couldnt do it so they said I wouldnt be an artist that will sell so I said to hell with it.

  • marie

I think someone owes Mrs. Knight an apology, how dare you disrepect a musical icon ,she is entitled to her opinion and she is speaking the truth most of the music is garbarge her music is timeless i’m much younger than her and still enjoy her music today so whomever wrote that comment about ho sit down needs to get educated on the history of music before they start writing comments like that.

  • http://www.iamglamourous.blogspot.com Diva Style

Furthermore, the images this music perpetuates ARE in fact detrimental to Black people. Get a grip!

  • bunnz

I can tell you all know nothing about the history of hip hop only the here and now. What’s out there now IS garbage which is why many of the real hip hop artists have tried to retire or quit and even made songs about the DEATH OF HIP HOP. But their gift won’t let them bow down because then the artform would seriously go to hell without true talent staying int he game among the imitators there today. And Gladys is speaking in general and she is on point. To say that the exception (some of the few positive artists out there) is the rule and they rep the current rap/hip hop game is asinine. Blame the labels – those devils and the general public who’s been brainwashed to buy the crap that’s out there. If we/everyone stops buying the crap that does not in any way shape or form rep real hip hop then the true artists would again become the majority and more artists would put out quality music.

I think ya’ll owe Ms. Knight an apology. You took it too far and you’re off in your assessment of the current game.

  • Ashley

I know that the writers/owner(s) have to be white for ya’ll to sit up & call Ms. Gladys out of her name like that. Totally disrespectful! You people need to have some standards. You just lost someone who frequents your site. Thanks for opening my eyes to see your site for what it really is!

  • imoonah

how would the writer feel if someone call their momma a ho same thing…

  • oneandone3000

Most of the music in hip hop deals with the occult. Check out the black album. Who sings about the devil? You need to wake up.

  • Well Alright…..

Ho sit down?! Are you serious?! I am apalled that you would refer to Gladys as a “Ho”! Most hip hop artists are untalented and curse every other breath. Hip hip artists have to have a gimmick to sell music to your typical middle class white kids, who are buying their sh*t!! At least, Gladys didn’t have to have a gimmick to become famous. GLADYS KNIGHT IS RIGHT!!!

  • aqueenwaits

    @CaneRiver1 – amen!

As for Gladys Knight, yaw need to stop disrespecting what legends and true talent that’s out there. She is 100% accurate! And so is Bill Cosbsy. Black people have the worst outlook on everything because we are so negative!

  • http://bossip Angelia Moore

Ms. Gladys Knight a ho? Really? How disrespectful…my parents like to tell a story of how they’d had an argument and how I was concieved to “Neither one of us wants to be the first to say goodbye” while making up. Ms. Knight is pure class and speaks the truth.

  • Stop hating yourselves..and supporting others

What has she done to uplift the community. Many of the people who have something to say are probably not doing much themselves or they wouldn’t have time to put others down. While you may not agree with the quality of the music, you cannot deny what is they have done financially. There were countless numbers of former drug dealers who were inspired by theses rappers to go legit. But because you don’t agree with what they say you ignore this and put them down. Yet, you support every disgusting thing that other races do and make them richer. How sad. It’s no wonder that black people have low self-esteem. They have to constantly hear from the elders how they’re no good, because they like to sing, rap, or dance. Ironically, at the same time that other races are making money from dancing and their kids are now rapping. Wow! The black community we always be poor, begging for money, and living for the respect of the white man.

  • fail

Yes, but you also prove exactly her point about people taking things too far and disrespecting each other. Who are you and how dare you disrespect a woman/your elder/a highly respected figure in the music industry like her in this way?

It’s a shame that you haven’t taken this down yet, not to mention posting an apology.

  • Deedee

I have seen some crazy articles on this page and have enjoyed commenting on a few. While it will mean nothing to this site, but means something to me this is the last time I will visit this site. What a disgrace to call her a ho. You all need a serious lesson in respect.
